Same. Charles is superb and Potter was a good change of pace (although I did like Henry too). Klinger getting more screen time was also a good choice, with or without the dresses.
32
Chaotic_Elf15 hr ago
+20
Charles, Col. Potter, and BJ were the rare example of adding characters later on with more nuance, growth, and less flanderization than the characters they replaced.
Charles being actually intelligent and a great surgeon provided a much more worthy adversary than Frank’s buffoonery, and allowed him to have a softer side and friendships in the group. BJ being generally more mature, softer spoke and loyal to his wife instead of another juvenile womanizer like Hawkeye meant we had a different perspective there instead of basically just two Hawkeyes.
And Col. Potter provided an actual authority figure who couldn’t just be walked over, and one who was respected by basically everyone because he earned it by being a good leader and not just a higher rank. Him being career army also gave another viewpoint on the war to contrast the other doctors. Maj. Houlihan also got to have more depth once Frank left and she wasn’t shackled to his plot lines.
All in all the addition of those characters let them tell more interesting stories than they could before, which really fit with the show wanting to have more mature discussions. And it also kept them funny: there’s only so many times you can laugh at Hawkeye outsmarting Frank yet again. Whereas someone like Charles Emerson Winchester III allows means he can be an ally or an adversary with numerous other characters depending on what’s funnier. Frank humor was pretty much the same no matter who he paired with, Charles had very different dynamics with different characters that gave him a lot more versatility for comedic situations.

I do miss what childhood me used to call the "commercials" which were the little segments like teeny tiny little super guy, or they'd have segments where we learn about foreign cultures, or the pronunciation bits. etc., between scenes on Sesame Street. There's a whole lot less of that. And Elmo basically took up like 30 minutes of the show last time I watched an episode.

I hate to be that guy, but I strongly disagree. Go back and watch the 70/80s shows on YouTube and then watch a modern one. Part of the drop in quality isn't the CTW's fault, it would be almost impossible to replicate the chemistry of Henson and Oz, but man it's hard to feel like they didn't dumb it down to compete with c*** like cocomelon.

Yeah in general there was a noticeable change in quality once the show went to the sci-fi network or whatever it was called back then, and then took a bigger drop once Dean left (or was it before? I forgot he left in s8 I thought it was more like 6 lol).
anyway It sort of recovered in the last couple seasons (I’m a big Farscape fan) but it was still nothing compared to the first 4 seasons imo.

I think the quality of the writing was fairly consistent throughout, but a lot of the appeal of the show was Anderson's humor and the team chemistry, so whether or not people liked the last two seasons kind of depended on how they felt about the new characters. I remember reading something about how in the reboot Frasier is a side character in his own show. In the original he’s basically the center that all other cast members connect to: Frasier’s dad, Frasier’s brother, Frasier’s producer, the live-in nurse that Frasier hired, etc.
In the new show Frasier‘s son is essentially the epicenter of the relationships, and Frasier is just one of the relationships.

Considering they've been on for 22 seasons now, American Dad suprisingly hasn't fallen into the same trap as Family Guy and The Simpsons. It's still fairly funny and entertaining. The characters themselves don't annoy you lile the Griffins do for example and all of them get good stories. There are rarely truly bad episodes and at it's worst its just meh. I find it suprising that its still in the shadow of FG, given their difference in quality.

Once Niles and Daphne got together the show lost that aspect of Niles secretly pining over her. Niles carried much of the show for me, so that change wasn't good for the series.

It’s an interesting situation where Hugh Laurie basically doesn’t acknowledge the show exists anymore. I saw where some popular podcaster asked him to come on and talk about the show and he said, “not interested, please don’t ask again.” On one hand I kind of respect it that he is confident in his abilities and doesn’t need to ride the coattails of a very popular show he used to be on. Not common.

The final season is like a fever dream of the show. It's typical US studio execs cranking everything upto 11 and beyond

Yeah. One of my favorite shows ever but noticeable dip in quality after Iannucci left

At first I didn't know he had left, just noticed that it was... Bad. A lot of people seem to disagree though.

Golden Girls, the writing and the delivery of it by that cast is perfect.

The big one that kept up quality imo was 24. Sure it had spots where it wasn't quite as great as it started. But it ended very well, provided you dont include legacy in the mix.

X files got better and got bigger budgets over time
Just watched seinfield for the first time...the episodes seem seasonless, like the quality was wildly consistent

Seinfeld aired for 9 years and genuinely didnt dip a single time. Season 1 was kinda rough (like most sitcoms) but 2-9 there’s not a single season thats not awesome television

Cheers had 10 seasons. All of them gold.

Define "long running"?
If three seasons is enough to qualify there are many shows that were solid start to finish. If you need five seasons there are fewer.
That said, 'Mad Men' was excellent throughout.

My favourite show, but I wouldn’t class it as long-running.

I wouldn’t put this show in that category although I love it. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and the first season was a bit slow.

Isn’t it like 3 seasons of 10 episodes? The exact opposite of long running lol

I'd say Supernatural. I know it took a significant drop, but only *really* after season 13
Personally I'd say there was a drop from great to good after 5 seasons, then a honestly pretty flat plateau for *8* more solid seasons.

6 was pretty rough. It’s the only season where I skip more than 2 episode

Yeah soulless Sam was up and down
The "alien" abduction episode was an all timer though

Everything after season five was a step down for Supernatural. Some seasons after that were fine, some were mostly entertaining, but there were a few c*** seasons in there.

I know people might disagree with this, but Supernatural. Yes it changed over time, but for a 15 year run the consistency is absolutely unheard of. And the actors only got better as they aged into the roles.

I agree on with you, but be prepared to be absolutely gang banged by the “it only had 5 seasons” brigade. Their lives have no joy.

Frasier. 11 Seasons and excellent from start to finish.
There was a minor dip in the second half of season 10 (very weird writing for Roz) but, even that season has some of my favourite episodes - Door Jam and Roe to Perdition are excellent and as good as the show ever was.
I won't say there are no bad episodes. I hate the ones featuring Daphne's brother. And the Charlotte storyline in Season 11 isn't that interesting to me. The handling of Daphne's weight gain (real life pregnancy) was bad. But the show, as a whole, was never bad. There were never any bad seasons of Frasier.
People often say that the show got worse after >!Niles and Daphne got together!< but I just don't see it. There are excellent episodes before, after and during that event. I don't see how it hurt the show.

I enjoyed every season of Adventure time. It had it's drops in quality, but I was still engaged from beginning to end.
