Interstellar. When Cooper watches the video messages after the time skip, you could hear people sobbing all around. Including me.

Schindlers List had audible sobs and nose blowing throughout.

And two rude people making out. Shameful.

Saving Private Ryan. There were Ww2 vets in the theater watching. Everyone was sobbing.

Not gonna lie, I never tear up during movies. But this one got me. I shed a tear.

At the end of United 93, when the plane crashes and the screen cuts to black, everyone was frozen and no one said anything for a minute or two. You could just feel the sadness in the air.

That movie was a hard watch, cause everyone knows how it ends, but somehow it still keeps everyone hoping it will go a different way.

Avengers Endgame and Barbie

I was thinking of the Thanos snap at the end of Infinity War. The good guys watching their good guy friends get dusted.

Izarial Apr 1, 2026 +2
Honestly, I’d count both. Both moments were the result of years of storytelling and it all went about as best as we could’ve hoped for.

I think for Endgame it was more the tension in the buildup after a year of waiting.

Saw Marley and Me in Theaters. Everyone was crying.

Schindler’s List. When the movie was over, most of the audience just sat there.

Any Pixar movie. They know how to tug at the heart strings. Specifically Up and Coco

horror movies generally, even shitty ones. gasps or groans from jumpscares, and everyone laughing at themselves after each one

The Visit is still one of the best experiences I've had in a theater

Hereditary. Particularly after the pole scene. I was fortunate to have a respectful group, so you could really feel the “what is happening/hold your breath/mouth drop” once he stopped the car.

Avengers End Game. On opening weekend, when Cap picks up Thor's hammer, the entire theater erupted in cheers.

The Dark Knight. That opening and the hospital scene had the room locked in.

So many over the years but most recently Projects Hail Mary - when it seemed like Rocky had died —-

Fun_in_Space Apr 1, 2026 +1
Wanna put that behind some spoiler space? I haven't seen it yet. Look for the icon that looks like a square with an "!" in it.
1
Daylightcp Apr 1, 2026 +1
It’s not a spoiler - thought long and hard about I it before posting it —- either way did look for the square with a ! but was not there on the editing page
1
Fun_in_Space Apr 1, 2026 +1
Well, if I see it, I will know that >!Rocky didn't die,!< so yes, it is a spoiler. The icon is next to numbered list icon on the editing bar. #

Breaking Dawn pt. 2 (specifically during the "big" fight scene towards the end). I just remember my sister and I staring at each other eyes wide and jaws DrOpPeD 😂😭 some were even crying🤧

Get Out…movie ended, and we were all just staring warily at the few white people in the room

That movie with baby Tom Holland and Nicole Kidman or Naomi Watts can’t remember they look like the same person. About the family caught in the tsunami. Just crying and shit
2
Impressive_Calamity Apr 1, 2026 +2
The Impossible! I cry every time I see the clip of the family reuniting!!

They shoulda handed everyone tissues at the door, had the whole room sniffling 🥺

Blair Witch Project - when all the hype had been low-key, you still weren't convinced if it was fiction or fact, and it was only playing in smaller art-house houses. Veeeerrrry tense in that theater.

penprickle Apr 1, 2026 +2
Starship Troopers. Perhaps unfortunately, the emotion was annoyance. When you have a theater packed full and the audience is mostly young men, and the reaction to the full upper nudity of the main female character is “Bring back the bugs! We want the bugs!”, you know the movie isn’t going well. 🤣

olivera_romano Apr 1, 2026 +2
The Green Mile, I’ve never heard a room that quiet before. By the end, you could hear people crying all around me.

Dune Part One was pretty surreal. Total engagement from the crowd. From the "and who will our next oppressors be?" opening, to the first real use of the Voice, to the box. The woman's singing was so alien-like. Every scene with the worm. The destruction of Arrakeen. The fremen bursting out of the sand. The poison tooth. Crowd was hyped. Complete silence from everybody walking out of the theater. Probably one of my top five theatre-going experiences ever.

You know, for the first time in many years I felt that shared audience emotion very strongly in Project Hail Mary on opening Saturday. It was so visceral I consciously noticed it happening during the film several times.

Nothing will ever beat the sobbing in the theater while watching Titanic.

lexisleuther Apr 1, 2026 +2
My Girl - the entire theatre was sobbing and also laughing at how much we were all sobbing.

The first of the LOTR trilogy. Big audience but everyone sat completely still and even forgot about their popcorn and candy. When the film was over people didn’t want to leave, they wanted to discuss the film with others.

Schindler's List. Jesus.

Titanic! I was in middle school and remember people crying and gasping during the sinking. It was intense and emotional

Went to see it at one of those theaters where the movie was out for a while and it was a cheaper showing, and I think most people were there for a second watch (including me), and the person at the end of the row brought a whole box of tissues, and just passed it on down the row.

Avengers: Endgame. When Cap caught the hammer, the entire theater erupted in a way I’ve never seen before or since. It felt like being at a massive sports championship.

Spider-Man No Way Home. When you think everything is fine and then you-know-who dies. It was opening weekend and everyone was shocked & in tears. I watched it twice that week and cried during that scene both times.

As the Mind Stone is placed into the Infinity Gauntlet, Thor attacks him, and you watch with anticipation, hoping for a happy ending. Until you hear Thanos whisper, "You should have gone for the head," and he snaps his fingers. A quiet rushes over the theater, a mix of shock and horror as Bucky turns to dust. Frozen, we watch helplessly as black panther vanishes. Watching Rocket as Groot drifts away. The theater starts filling with gasps and sadness as we lose Wanda and Sam. Then cut to Tony and Mantis as they recover from their fight. The room fills with fear. One by one. Mantis. Drax. Starlord. Dr. Strange, and then: "Mr. Stark... I don't feel so good."

The entire sequence after The Snap in Avengers: Infinity War sucked all the air out of the room. It was dead silent save for the occasional gasp. And then the collective groan of despair when it got to Peter Parker... As an adult in my mid-30's, I understood that all the actors were contractually obligated to return in subsequent films. I also assumed going in that there'd be some sort of Empire Strikes Back style ending since it was announced as the first-half of a two-parter. But as a fan in the moment? I and the audience I was seeing it with were absolutely devastated.

I still remember seeing Alien when I was 16 in an almost packed theater and how rapt and quiet everyone was, and then the gasps and exclamations during the chest bursting scene. It was an experience.

Heartbreaking: * *Schindler’s List* * *Dancer in the Dark* * *The Lives of Others* * *Indian Horse* Joyous: * *Shall We Dance?* (Japanese original) * *Strictly Ballroom* For these last two, the whole theatre spontaneously broke into cheers and applause at the end, and after *Shall We Dance*, I saw a couple waltzing in the lobby afterwards. I think there’s just something very uplifting about dance! I’m so glad I saw both those movies in the theatre.

Requiem for a Dream. Lots of people just sat there feeling dirty when the credits started rolling (I was one of them).

Dunkirk was dead silent. Heard some sniffling. After the movie, a lot of people sat during the credits and it felt really solemn and thoughtful

I see a TON of comments on Avengers: Infinity War being that everyone was shocked or silent. When Thor showed up and looked like he was going to stop Thanos I groaned thinking that they chickened out and wouldn't go through with the snap...and said a little too loudly "YES!" lol. I really honestly thought they would end it stopping Thanos.

Return of the Jedi. After “…your sister”, and Luke force grabbed the lightsaber and started fighting back. The theater ERUPTED. It was nuts.

Esa película de hace unos meses, La Empleada, creo que sentía una oscuridad de todos ahí mirando en qué concluye, unidos, como un sentimiento de la oscuridad, o sino en la de Scream 7, que parece que el público estaba muy concentrado

The firecracker scene in Boogie Nights. The tension was so strong, every time a firecracker went off everyone in the theatre jumped in their seats.

Dancer in the Dark. The entire theater was a weeping mess by the time the lights came on. I’m sure most people were there because they loved Bjork and seeing her in a feature film was very exciting at the time. Jesus Christ, it was brutal and Bjork’s raw emotions gnawed at your soul. Sad to know what the director put her through during filming.
