The Matrix (1999). It was a great film then, and it's aged like fine wine, particularly as far as its messaging.

The Matrix is my favorite movie of all time. It's the perfect mix of sci-fi, action, atmosphere, music, pacing, choreography, and overall storytelling. I watched that movie probably 100 times after I got the DVD for Christmas as a teen.

How could you omit costuming???

DagnyLeia Mar 30, 2026 +71
Seeing it in the movie theater when it opened, having no idea what was happening was absolutely mind blowing. I wish every body could feel that moment..it's lost now since everyone knows the story or the concept...but then? Oh, absolutely incredible.

Regular-Mastodon-430 Mar 30, 2026 +16
I just saw it in theaters for a re-screening event, I didn’t see it until DVD release when I was a kid (I wanted to see it in theaters but my parents objected to taking me to R-rated film even though I had seen much more intense stuff). What a theater experience. Still hits 26 years later. And there was almost a gasp in the theater when Morpheus talks about how AI took over… I think some of us collectively forgot how current that origin story still is.

This is the movie I wish I could experience again for the first time.

I prefer Aliens.

The VFX still hold up 35 years later, you can tell Jim and the whole cast/crew put forward every ounce of passion they had.

The rare sequel that's better than an already incredible original.

It's incredible that it still looks pretty good even in 2026.

The Emperor's New Groove. A tight 80-min romp. No filler, all entertainment, all-star cast.

Disney’s best as far as I’m concerned
69
OMGItsCheezWTF Mar 30, 2026 +5
And it was almost completely different. The film sent years in production hell, it was originally meant to be this grand musical epic like The Lion King called *Kingdom of the Sun* After really poor test screenings Disney execs split the production team in half, gave half to Roger Allers, the original director and half to Mike Dindal who wanted to pivot towards comedy. The studio vastly preferred the comedy version of Dindal but still almost shut production down entirely, giving Dindal just 2 weeks to come up with a version that would work. That was the film we got. There's a documentary film called *The Sweatbox* by Trudie Styler (wife of Sting who was involved in the soundtrack) that covers the production of it, it's pretty good!

djbuu Mar 30, 2026 +67
You’re incorrect. It’s 11/10
67
scoyne15 Mar 30, 2026 +91
I’ve seen all kinds of people pass through listnook over the years...quiet ones, loud ones, dreamers, schemers. But every now and then, you come across a fellow like /u/djbuu. The sort who just can’t let a thing be what it is. Now, most folks, when they see a 10 out of 10, they nod their heads. Maybe even tip their hat to it. A perfect thing, rare as it is, tends to speak for itself. But not this man. No sir. /u/djbuu looks at perfection the way a man looks at a locked door. Not as something to accept, but something to outdo. He’s got this habit, you see. Someone lays down a 10, clean and proper, and he leans in with a little smile, like he’s about to let you in on a secret. “That’s nice,” he says, “but what about an 11?” And just like that, the whole scale bends a little, like it wasn’t built to hold steady in the first place. Funny thing about chasing an 11, it ain’t really about making something better. It’s about refusing to let anyone else have the last word. It’s a quiet kind of one-upmanship, dressed up like enthusiasm, but you can hear the gears turning underneath. Always reaching, always stretching the measure just a little further than it was meant to go. Now, I won’t say it’s malicious. People like /u/djbuu aren’t trying to tear things down. If anything, they think they’re lifting them up. But there’s a cost to that kind of thinking. When everything can be pushed past perfect, well...perfect stops meaning much at all. And then you’re not measuring greatness anymore, you’re just stacking numbers on top of each other, hoping the pile looks impressive. In the end, I reckon it’s a restless sort of habit. The kind that keeps a man from ever sitting still and appreciating what’s already in front of him. A 10 out of 10 ought to be enough for anybody. But for /u/djbuu… enough has never quite been the point.

Saving Private Ryan. The opening scene is the most realistic portrayal of warfare I've seen. I'd argue the best war movie ever made
639
Phillipe1988 Mar 30, 2026 +24
The movie Warfare is so visceral as well. Showcasing the impact on not only the Americans but the family that lived in the house they are in is wild.
24
cmmatthews Mar 30, 2026 +138
Black Hawk Down is pretty good too for warfare depictions
138
xlr8_87 Mar 30, 2026 +31
I read the book just recently. The movie is a tamed down version of the real events, I'd highly recommend the book if you haven't read it! I can understand why they left so much out of the movie though
31
MikeyMalloy Mar 30, 2026 +5
Come And See blows it out of the water (pun intended)
5
ka1ri Mar 30, 2026 +29
Opening scene is good but it's riddled with inaccuracies. The biggest one was the beaches were much much much bigger because they made landfall in low tide so they had to deal with more machine gun fire getting to the seawall than what the movies depict

The incredibles. A kids movie that addresses the responsibility of supers way before marvel, involves family drama, the feeling of loss and athlete might feel being knocked from the glory days, and is absolutely dark in the whole premise. Couple that with a glorious art style that although is simple really holds up.
