What movie that includes time travel do you like the most

Posted by Spotter24o5

Which movie do you think used time travel the best? I personally think it’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, because I love the idea that everything that happens has already happened in the future. Unfortunately, the Cursed Child book ruined this completely. But tell me which movie do you think handled time travel the best, and which ones completely failed trying to make a good story?

In terms of the way time travel is portrayed, Primer. In terms of entertainment value, Edge of Tomorrow

Along the lines of Edge of Tomorrow, I guess Groundhog Day is a time travel movie too.

I love timeloop movies, edge of tomorrow is not my favorite but it's thought out really well for a time loop movie

It might actually be my favorite time loop movie. Yes even more than groundhogs day.
8
wartopuk Mar 30, 2026 +3
why?
3
narwhal_breeder Mar 30, 2026 +3
Because its a dumb idea executed *so well.* Just from the synopsis you are thinking "ill watch on a plane maybe" tier movie. Its kinda like Steely Dans Aja - a completely stupid concept done with so much effort and skill that you get kinda mad at how well it turned out. Yacht rock is a dumb idea - Aja is a maximalist execution on that dumb idea. Time loop romance comedy movie is a dumb idea - Palm Springs is a maximalist execution on that dumb idea. See also: Edward Scissorhands and Pig.

You keep getting all these little signs of how long he's been stuck. Like he doesn't answer what his job is suggesting he's forgotten, he perfectly nails throwing rubbish into a bin. Anyone he can manipulate he knows how to perfectly.

Happy Death Day was dumb, but in an embarrassingly entertaining way.
18
bloodraged189 Mar 30, 2026 +5
I was so disappointed that Primer wasn't a closed loop
5
cubosh Mar 30, 2026 +7
i recently watched primer and honestly i found it to be unwatchable (i did finish it) -- the dialog was excruciating and the color grading was more aggressive than a college art major who thinks their vision is revolutionary
7
mdb_la Mar 30, 2026 +15
Primer was brilliant for how low budget and unassuming it was. The lack of budget and "college project" vibe made the time travel aspect work much better. I imagine it would be far less impressive to see it for the first time now, after hearing all of the hype on listnook and elsewhere online. It's a movie that exceeds deservedly-low expectations.
15
intenseskill Mar 30, 2026 +3
Primer is so good. It is amazing how it hooks you even though you don't have a clue what is going on
3
johndenver469 Mar 30, 2026 +2
I gotta give primer another try with that online guide in my hands. I wanted to watch it blind for my first time but was met with the sobering reality that I am not smart enough to follow that film
2
intenseskill Mar 30, 2026 +3
No one is and if they say they understood the first watch they are lying.
3
hoop0724 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Yes. Primer. It’s so complicated. But I love that no matter how confusing, it all makes logical sense if you want to try to figure it out
2
Xrin8 Mar 30, 2026 +63
A new one is Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. The time travel element is essentially a BTTF ripoff but they use it in such a funny way (how they realize they are back in the past is so good). One of the best comedies in years.
63
swisstoast Mar 30, 2026 +21
The moment that Matt realises the time machine worked was the funniest thing I have seen in years. Absolutely brilliant.
21
NoobyNort Mar 30, 2026 +11
I just watched it and I can't stop telling people about it! I still give "Edge of Tomorrow" the win but because they are so different it's hard to compare. Really loved it!
11
ayjaytay22 Mar 30, 2026 +5
I had never seen the show, went blind into the movie, knowing nothing. Laughed my goddamn ass off. The guy two seats over was laughing even harder. Awesome experience

Gonna reply to this to say the TV show was great.
22
InconsistentMinis Mar 30, 2026 +9
Will beat the drum for the 12 Monkeys TV show at every opportunity too! The time loops within time loops within time loops were brilliant, and it really stuck the landing.
9
justins_dad Mar 30, 2026 +8
It was fun but veryyyy different from the movie
8
Mildly_Irritated_Max Mar 30, 2026 +15
The first season kept vaguely close to the movie for a bit but yeah after that completely it's own thing. I know it's a minority opinion, but I enjoyed it more than the movie.
15
Valerian_ Mar 30, 2026 +4
Right from the start it broke the very believable logic of the movie and started introducing some weird magical stuff caused by time travel, if I remember well it was about the same wristwatch meeting itself from another timeline and causing an explosion or something. I gave up when there was something like a weird storm caused by time travel.

First movie that came to my mind too. How is this not the top rated proposition. How is Harry Potter the movie that launches this discussion (and don't get me wrong, I love HP). Even Terminator is a better contender for top time traveling movie somehow. Edge of Tomorrow also deserves a top spot.
57
lipp79 Mar 30, 2026 +28
Because we are getting older and our favorite movies aren't the new generation's favorites. They're treating out favorite movies the way we treated our parent's favorite movies. They don't know how good it is until they watch it.
28
Kaldricus Mar 30, 2026 +7
The use of time travel and the time turner in Harry Potter was also awful
7
makemefeelbrandnew Mar 30, 2026 +7
I'm older. Saw Back to the Future when it came out at the York Theater in SF. And I love it. But the execution of time travel in HP3 was brilliant, and Cuaron's direction of the movie makes the reveal and the subsequent execution of the scenes that follow put it at the top for me as well.
7
poundruss Mar 30, 2026 +4
how was it awful? i thought it was one of the more realistic depictions of the idea of time travel in a movie
4

167

One of my favorites to suggest to others. It’s a beautiful arc of a family across time, where the time travel bit is used in the story but isn’t the focal point.
16

Facts. Domhnall Gleason, Rachel McAdams, and Bill Nighy are perfectly cast in this drama. You will laugh, and cry, A LOT. But it is a beautiful film!

noobakosowhat Mar 30, 2026 +2
I love this film and this shaped what I aspire to be. I want to find not fame nor riches, but true contentment in life and pure happiness with my family. Although the final intended message of the film was that of the son’s eventual giving up of using his time travel powers, it was the way the father used his powers which really moved me. To spend your powers to read books or to walk down the beach with your son, it was truly mind blowing for me. We should really ought to know what truly makes us happy and what truly makes our lives beautiful.

Thank you. I don't know why this didn't pop into my head first but once I saw this I knew it was Timecrimes for sure. For anybody who doesn't love subtitles, the film is incredibly laid out and follows one character from their POV the whole time. So all of the storytelling doesn't really need that much dialogue to drive it. Plus the performances are great for such a small film. Incredible twist, and manages to keep you intrigued even once it shows its hand.

Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy? Or was that only in the books, don't quite remember. But they're both some of my top favourite books and movie, so if the movie does include it, it would obviously be my favourite. If not, I've always had a soft spot for the Time Machine. It's corny af, but the visuals and soundtrack make it a joy to watch. It portrays time travel in its most base form, and I love it.

I like the original Time Machine movie. Besides the book itself, I liked the visual hypothesis and the genuinely eerie feeling of what could be in store in the future. The idea of radiation sending us underground, which mutates us into cannibalism. And the descension into the dark ages for the surface dwellers who don't read anymore, don't question anything, accept their cruel fate, and follow a siren in a trance state rather than fighting.

And the effects were truly wonderful and creative.

Star Trek IV. Scotty gives away the secret to transparent aluminum and talks to a computer mouse. Chekov asks where the nuclear "wessels" are. Spock mind melds with a whale. McCoy saves a patient from dialysis with a pill. Kirk tells the crew "Everyone remember where we parked" the cloaked Bird of Prey. The crew saves the world by saving the whales. It's perfect!

The Time Machine (2002). Guy Pearce can do no wrong.

Had to scroll far down to see this one! Love it and one of my favorites. Has both the back in time and travel to the future elements. Also has the pure despair of trying to change the past being futile

Primer is my favourite movie about time travel. Tenet has the most impressive/intricate use of time travel.

Most time travel rubs me wrong. A flash, and a bang and you are somewhere else in another time.  I liked how  *Tenet* changed that convention. It seems more grounded to me.

I'm more of a 'time-loop' type. I think that counts as timetravel as well. I really like "In The Tall Grass", "Triangle", "Primer". I think Resolution and The Endless also fit somewhat.

Not a movie, but there's an episode of Stargate where they get stuck in a time loop. [I love how bored they get.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l3D1zrNhrlc&pp=ygUSc3RhcmdhdGUgdGltZSBsb29w)

Edge Of Tomorrow is fantastic. Also loved Interstellar, Tenet, Back To The Future, and of course, The Time Machine.

12 Monkeys.. You can try all you want, but you can't change time.. Because whatever you do, it already happened.

somewhere in time is overlooked a lot. Very minimalist in its scale and story.

That I like the most? Probably Back to the Future. Maybe Flight of the Navigator. This century? Edge of Tomorrow. Endgame is also pretty high. The best one? Or even the one that has my favourite interpretation of time travel? That's a different question

About Time. It really had a huge impact on how I want to be and how I want to act as an adult and as a father.
