I’m looking for films that leave you feeling unsettled, frustrated, or even annoyed but intentionally. The kind that spark discussion, make you uncomfortable, or shift your perspective after watching. Movies like Breakdown and I Care A Lot where the frustration actually adds to the experience. Thrillers, crime, drama, horror…
Whiplash for sure. I was so stressed and angry the whole time watching how far Fletcher pushed him, but it made that ending hit way harder.

Atonement definitely creates a sense of anger over what transpired. This gives the film a nice bit of meta longevity as people try to grapple with whether that anger at the situation justifies the vilification of a child.

I saw this at the cinema at a time when I'd been watching repeats of Father Ted again. I know it was based on a true story (the film) about these journalists in Boston investigating cases of priests abusing children, but it was mentioned that some of the priests responsible were transferred to other parishes. And I did think of Bishop Brennan's son!

Mother!, Speak No Evil and The Square. It has these stages of passive characters that just drive me mad.
Mother! at least has a pretty active main character, but she's overshadowed by a more dominant character and she's forced to go along with it. In Speak No Evil the Danish couple is played with by the way more dominant Dutch couple, even when they're about to die.
In The Square so many characters (and especially the main character) are so painfully and annoyingly passive, as they avoid conflict and responsibility for their actions. There's [a scene](https://youtu.be/uwbSMIuVdLM?si=YvjPn33z-FHKORD_) that could be its own short film that perfectly reflects this. It's great.
I don’t get The Square one. Was the point to keep antagonizing until the crowd turned on him? It’s presented as an art performance
1
PlagueOfLaughterMar 23, 2026
+2
Yes, it's an art performance in the movie as well. Even though the in-universe actor is crossing some lines, no one dares to interrupt or intervene, even though they greatly outnumber him. It isn't until the woman gets assaulted (and even then it takes them quite some time) before people break the "spell" of the performance and take it seriously enough to act.

I was completely crushed and upset at the ending the first time I saw it. It was after multiple viewings (I own the movie) that I changed how I saw the ending.
Sometimes, a sad ending is more memorable because it's unexpected. Casablanca has a similar vibe at the ending.
In La La Land, they both end up realizing their dreams individually. Them pushing each other - Mia confronting Seb that his dream was to open the bar, not tour endlessly in a band, and Seb practically forcing Mia to do the last audition - was the catalyst for them to be successful. The slight nod at the final scene is them acknowledging it.

Well yeah, critics love bittersweet, or just plain bitter, endings more than happy endings. I think they knew they were Oscar-bait quite early on, so chose that to go for the biggest fish.

I love the ending of La La land, because it’s about how just because a relationship isn’t forever doesn’t mean it wasn’t important or wonderful while it lasted. It might be exactly what you needed at that time. In a fantasy world, everything would’ve worked out perfectly, but life isn’t Singing in the Rain, and that’s ok too. There’s no one kind of happy ending. They both did get happy endings, it just wasn’t with each other.

I just watched If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and in the discussions I hear it’s a lot like Uncut Gems. The whole time I wanted to reach through the screen and both hug/shake the protagonist. It’s so frustrating to watch her be both consistently unsupported by what are supposed to be helpful mental health resources while she’s also completely overwhelmingly incapable of accepting help. It captures very eloquently the frustration of therapy/therapists that they are meant to help you help yourself, not actually emotionally support or entangle with a patient.

When They See Us. It's about the central park 5. I'm white but my wife is not, and our kids, though technically "mixed", will only be seen by this world as black. Realizing that these people who I love so much will be discarded and disregarded by everyone else who lookes like me (okay, not everyone but a sickeningly large fraction) makes me want to rage in a way that I couldn't have imagined, but black parents already know all too well.
Watch it, and try your best to make yourself understand that those are YOUR kids. Then use that feeling you never want to feel again to make the world a slightly better place for mine and so many others. Please.

The company is on the verge of bankruptcy, but everybody who sells 90% of their available assets gets a million dollar bonus, and if the whole crew sells 90%, they all get another million dollar bonus. *How are you going out of business if you can give 30+ people 2 million dollars each?*
When Jeremy Irons is eating and Kevin Spacey wants to quit, but Irons convinces him to stay, and brushes off the idea that the entire system is tanking, because it has happened over and over again in history, like it’s no big deal causing a recession, because they are already rich and will face minimal consequences, yet when there is a recession, the poor and middle class struggle for years.

The Plague (2026)
It's a very realistic portrayal of middle school boys bullying a weird kid with a rash at a water polo camp. Just felt too damn real. It did a very good job of putting yourself in the main character's shoes and you could feel how torn he was between wanting to be a good person but also getting pulled by peer pressure into bullying.
It was probably the most uncomfortable I've felt in a theater and I hated every second of watching. I assume that was their aim and it was really successful but yeah I'm never watching it again.

Not me personally, but I remember my year 12 English teacher saying that the ending of [Easy Rider](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easy_Rider) was meant to make the audience angry.
Here's an explanation (from ChatGPT - but please don't downvote this just because you dislike AI):
>!*Easy Rider* deliberately ends in a way that provokes anger: the sudden, senseless violence is meant to shock and frustrate the audience, stripping away the film’s earlier sense of freedom and replacing it with a stark reminder of the hostility and intolerance beneath mainstream society; Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda crafted the ending to feel unjust and unresolved, leaving viewers with a sense of outrage and disillusionment rather than closure.!<
