As for me, I'm the kind of person who doesn't cry much, and there aren't a lot of movies that DO make me cry, but here are some of the movies that really got me:
Let Him Have It
Terms of Endearment

Dead Poet's Society
What about you? What are the movies that bought tears to your eyes?

I cry each and every time I watch it. It's such a hopeful story that makes you desperate for the son and father to reconcile. When the son finally puts aside his pride to comfort his father, then recognizes the truths that come out of the stories he grew up hearing? Beautiful. I hope you can return to it and celebrate your dad's memory.

Clerks 3. That ending got me as I can totally relate to what's was going on..
8
Ancient_Barnacle4245Apr 1, 2026

I have such a complicated relationship with that movie.
I completely acknowledge that it's a good movie. It's funny and well written and the cast is terrific. The ending is heart wrenching. I also understand and respect that the filmmaker is the storyteller and it's Kevin Smith's story to tell however he wants.
And I won't watch it again because of that ending.
I think Smith was dead wrong to make that movie. I don't agree with this nihilism that's crept into modern cinema that says no one can ever have a happy ending. I don't believe killing off a character is necessary to generate a deep emotional quality to a narrative. Smith had set up an absolutely perfect closure point for Dante and Randall at the conclusion of Clerks II ( which I still consider his best movie) and if what he did to Dante in Clerks III was the only story he had to tell with it, I'd have rather he never made it.
I completely respect both that it's his story to tell and the craftsmanship involved, but I'll never bother with it again .
4

I swear I heard that Kevin Smith wanted this to be the ending of the first Clerks but it was poorly received so he changed it.
2
Ancient_Barnacle4245Apr 1, 2026
+2
Yeah, he famously had an original ending where Dante gets shot and killed during a robbery at the end. Smith went on record as saying it was meant to be a comment on the futility of everything. As I recall, it was another filmmaker or a producer who watched the original cut and advised him to change the ending.

This is a different one but Tony's death scene in Avengers Endgame made me bawl (unexpectedly). About 20+ years prior, my grandfather (larger than life personality) was injured when he fell through a a ceiling and landed on an open door. It broke his back and they of course gave him drugs in the ER. He had never had any kind of p********** or drugs or alcohol at that point in his life (70yo) which was also odd because he'd been injured a lot. He spent about 3 months in the ICU and was on a vent and could only blink. He seemed to be with it and we would talk to him and he would blink. It was rough, he never came out of it and they think it was something to do with his body not recovering from the drugs.
Anyway, after months of waiting for answers and for him to get better, they made the decision to take him off of the vent and let him pass (it is what he would have wanted). When they were moving him down to a room after they took him off of the vent, my grandmother was walking with him. They were bringing him onto the elevator so she had to take the next one. Through tears she squeezed his hand and said "I'm ok now, you can rest." We thought he was hanging on for her, he winked at her and the doors closed. The nurses said that right after they closed, he closed his eyes and passed.
So in the Endgame scene, that is what Tony's wife says to him before he passes and it f****** wrecked me. I was bawling, like when I was a teenager and he passed. Absolutely destroyed me and I am sure that people in the theater thought I was a little too attached to Iron Man.

A silent voice. A gorgeous but also tragically sad film that got overshadowed because it came out at the same time as Your Name - it would have been the best film out of Japan any other year. It's the only animated film that everyone I know has cried while watching it.
The thing I find unique about it is it's about the effects of childhood bullying but mainly from the bully's perspective. How does one cope with having made a big mistake in ones past? How does being bullied effect someone? How much do you judge someone as innately cruel? Can these people reconcile and forgive themselves and each other? Lots of commentary on being ostracised and the impact it has on young people and adults.
Some creative choices like the crosses in front of people's faces as the protagonist chooses not to look people in the face due to his depression and self loathing, which disappear when he connects.
Just a beautiful and tragic movie - trigger warning for themes of depression and suicide.

I cry at a lot of movies but off the top of my head the last ones to make me cry were
Coco
Schindler’s list had me crying throughout the movie
Up, Green Mile, Pans labyrinth, most Pixar movies (Toy Story, the good dinosaur, WALL·E ). Interstellar, the arrival.

During the pandemic the theaters were playing all the classics for only $5. I rewatched "The Land Before Time" for the first time in 30 years. So glad I had the theater completely to myself cuz i was a mess for probably half the runtime.
Saw E.T. in the theater about a year later for its 40th anniversary and I got choked up a few times for that as well.

All Of Us Strangers
- I was doing a Lego build during it, as I like to fiddle when watching things, and stopped about a third of the way in. When it ended I cried so hard I went to find my husband for a hug and he thought someone had died.
More recently:
Tarzan
Finding Nemo
Finding Dory
- all whilst I was pregnant last year. Not a good idea. Hopefully when she's old enough to watch them I may have gotten a grip on myself, or maybe I'll do the parent thing of "I'm just fixing a snack, anyone want something?" and leave the room.

Obvious Pixar picks have done it for me (Coco, Up, Toy Story 3), but also oddly enough The First Slam Dunk movie? I think I had a reaction to it because I have lots of proud men in my extended family, so to see a movie of a proud young man actually using his toxic masculinity as a means of self improvement in a sport really got to me.

Hacksaw Ridge, Creed trilogy and A Silent Voice are the only movies in recent times that i can think of that have made me cry the most.
"Please lord help me get one more..."
"You know why? Cuz youre a Creed and I love you kid..." "I love you too..."
\*The entire ending of Silent Voice\*

I will say 9 Below. It's about a bunch of sled dogs left chained at a research outpost when the scientists evacuate because of a big storm. The dogs have to fight the elements and predators to survive. My wife was a crying, heaving mess and I wasn't much better. Only made it about an hour in. Who chains up dogs with an incoming snow storm?

While not a movie, the series Turn. I started watching it when it was originally streaming, usually while holding my infant son while he was having fitful sleep. It was totally fine until the very end. I was not prepared for that.

It's still Brian's song for me and I don't remember that movie. I saw a clip of the death scene in The lion King and that did it for me. What made it worth was it was a clip of a dog watching the movie and the dog started crying
