what movies to watch for a good cry to get over a breakup

Posted by Hot_Risk3302

like the title says, im looking for movie recommendations to make me cry, im trying to get over a breakup and move on. i just want something thats either gonna absolutely crush me or just help me grieve my relationship and cry it all out and move on. i really need to cry i think, i feel like im going insane and i just want to be okay again. it doesnt help me and my ex stayed friends but i genuinely cannot cut them out of my life, i will honestly be so soooo depressed if i did. anyways i need to cry so any movies that can do them send it my way ive already seen grave of the fireflies, cant do that again, and ive already seen eternal sunshine and it didnt really do it for me

I don't know if this is good for a cry, but definitely great for some laughs and hope after a break up! It's my favorite comedy movie overall.

Balto Actually, most dog movies with mild peril.

Superlemonada Mar 31, 2026 +2
Togo is such an underrated movie too.
2
phillyhandroll Mar 31, 2026 +2
Togo > Balto, Willem Dafoe realizing Togo's love for him at the end will jerk the tears out your eyes harder than a Jamaican jerks chicken.
2
Superlemonada Mar 31, 2026 +2
Agree. My uncle refused yo watch it because he knew he would be bawling lol

I watched this a month after my dog had passed it destroyed me. Two weeks later I was looking at new puppies.

Personally watching The Breakup with Jennifer Aniston made me ugly cry. It reminded me of how painful it was for both of us but how ultimately it was the right decision.

This, both for the real feelings and for the teachable moment at the end

I’m not kidding, the Marcell the Shell with shoes on movie. Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer were going through their divorce while working in it. The way it dealt with relationship loss (not exclusively a romantic one) is beautiful

Swingers Casablanca High Fidelity (Note: All three of these are about a guy who's heartbroken over losing a girlfriend, dunno if they'll make you cry, but they might reverberate with you anyway).
8
uncre8tv Mar 31, 2026 +7
I was 19 when Swingers came out. That was the most relatable movie I'd ever seen. The rules on calling, the calling and getting the machine, the going out from bar to party to party to bar, the 3am diner meals. We were beautiful babies. We were money and we didn't even know it.

Me and earl and the dying girl. If you like indie films at all, that film will definitely do the trick. Also, while the topic is unrelated, the green mile is also a sob fest. And I would know, you could count the number of films that make me weep on one hand.

If you want to cry, watch Brokeback Mountain. But also be prepared to feel a kind of pain you haven’t experienced before, a new sort of gut-wrenching longing that you’ll never part with. And every time you hear the acoustic guitar strum from then on, you’re reminded instantly of that pain. Incredible film.

If you want something astonishing and beautiful, try The Red Turtle. I put it on not realizing that I would be a puddle after watching it. It's animated (simple and gorgeous, not Pixar-type) which I also didn't realize, but it was just what I needed at the time.
2
kelphu Mar 31, 2026 +2
Celeste and Jesse Forever with Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg. She breaks up with her loser bf but mad regrets when he begins reinventing himself into what she wanted him to be all along, full spirals. I weep every time. It's a dry black comedy but a good cry

How about 500 Days of Summer? Thats a lighthearted movie, but then its probably not what you're looking for. Is Blade Runner 2049 a suitable movie for grief? It was for me, I saw myself as Joe. And the movie and internet edits really drove the grief home

For a cathartic breakup cry, 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' (2004) is the gold standard for processing love and loss. '500 Days of Summer' (2009) is great for perspective, and 'Manchester by the Sea' (2016) if you just want to feel the weight of it all. Hang in there!

The Way We Were Normal People (Series) Simple Passion (Based on an Annie Ernaux book-she won recently the Nobel Prize for Literature) (These are all break up parting ways movies/series, and the two books-especially Normal People, Simple Passion, will also be great reads.) The Piano Teacher made me cry. It’s a very deep psychological intense story, but the acting is superb. This one has a happy conclusion, but I liked this old 80s movie called Until September which is set in Paris. The woman is a strong character but she goes through the ups a downs of an affair with a beautiful French man. If you need some cheering up I recommend It Happened One Night (classic with Clark Gable).

It might get you through the day, but no movie or media is going to get you through a breakup. Focus on your personal growth one day at a time and keep it in focus.

FKAFrog Mar 31, 2026 +4
Man f*** off. It’s a movie sub and they asked for a movie rec. No one asked for your opinion. Let them grieve however they want.

SaltyLunch722 Mar 31, 2026 -1
I am doing exactly what you said. And I was polite about it which seems hard for you. There are a million of these threads, all they have to do is search. As someone who has lived it, it's easy to bury yourself in fiction and it's all too common. Just offering a perspective that may prove useful over time to someone in that situation. Sorry that offends your sensibilities. Actually, that last sentence isn't true.
