What qualifies a person to be considered a scientist? Is it knowledge or recognition or something else?

To be officially recognized, titled as a scientist, researcher. Degree, usually multiple. I am a published evolutionary biologist, scientist. Still in school (grad school, Ph. D) The education never ends.
