What shows attracted a lot of famous guest stars?

Posted by TerribleBid8416

First one to come to my mind is Columbo. Peter Falk knew everyone. And they all wanted to be a villain on his show. He was very good friends with Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. Tony was never on but Janet was. And their young daughter played the small but memorable role of a waitress. Jamie Lee Curtis.

This is the ultimate answer. Look at the episode “Krusty Gets Kancelled”. It was the final of its fourth season, and they managed to pull into just one episode Hugh Hefner, Johnny Carson, Bette Midler, Elizabeth Taylor, Luke Perry AND the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I don’t think any show has ever had the clout to be able to pull that level of star power into one episode, let alone do so when only 4 seasons deep.

Especially since Carson made so few public appearances after he retired.

Being animated is basically a cheat code for this, even more so than how The Love Boat was structured -- all you need is a few hours to OK the script and a booth to do the voice. "Homer at the Bat" took months, mostly because they had nine guest stars who were extremely busy for most of the year, but could easily schedule them individually in the off-season. Getting all nine into the booth at the same time would've been near-impossible.

The sheer number of Oscar winners who guest starred in 30 Rock is staggering for a show that spent so much of its run on NBC’s chopping block.
21
caninehere 4 days ago +5
30 Rock had the benefit of shooting in 30 Rock, and Tina having such strong ties with SNL meant they could get lots of guest stars on the show who were already around for SNL or other things. It didn't hurt that the show was hilarious and everybody wanted to be on it.

Netflix UK is getting the series on May 1 so hopefully it’ll put it on more people’s radar. I haven’t watched it in some years so I’m looking forward to giving it a rewatch.

Finally got through all of it last year, having only seen series 1 back in like 2009. I did a binge over 10 weeks or so to get through them start to finish. It's still excellent, Baldwin can really play comedy well.

30 Rock was such a hit with critics out of the gate that you could tell that big names were lining up to guest star in season 2. Getting Jerry Seinfeld at the time was pretty huge; he hadn’t really done anything since Seinfeld ended its run (though he did have Bee Movie to promote)

The Love Boat. People who were not around at the time will never understand that the show was basically a constant revolving door of minor and major celebrities. Every single episode was a bunch of new guest stars so much so that it was literally a part of the shows opening credits.
188
Wonderful_Adagio9346 5 days ago +63
Okay, here's the genius of The Love Boat that few realize: The show has three storylines. Each has a different style. They rarely interact. The Love Boat is basically an anthology show, with three stories being told at the same time. This means that each story is about 15 minutes long, unlike a 22-minute sitcom or a 45-minute hourly drama. Shorter stories means faster and easier writing, because each scene is just a few minutes before the show moves to another scene. Now, for the real genius: Aside from the season openers shot on some exotic location, everything is shot in a studio, or the ship when it's available in Los Angeles. Because of this, and the structure of each episode, shows can be shot whenever guest stars are available. You simply pull a story from the filling cabinet, do a quick table read, and shoot the story. Once it is in the can, the editor works their magic, and the show airs. For an actor, the production is painless. The stories are innocuous. Older celebrities could make some easy money and maintain their SAG union health benefits.
63
TerribleBid8416 5 days ago +11
So they could shoot 12 stories and just stitch 3 together that fit well. Zsa Zsa may have been shot 6 weeks before Charro with 15 in between
11
Wonderful_Adagio9346 5 days ago +4
Yes. I don't know the actual production calendar used. Each episode would have a sitcom story with the crew, a rom-com, and a rom-drama. Me, I would have added recurring characters, appearing once a season. All rom-com stereotypes, maybe with a little character growth, perhaps they are the friend of a main character in a story, then they get their own storyline. I would also include a little bit of interaction with the background extras. Maybe a waiter, or housekeeping, or another passenger.

8
itsyagirlrey 5 days ago +6
I've always been surprised that The Love Boat never got rebooted in the last few years. It seems like such an easy nostalgia grab and there's so many mid-tier celebrities nowadays that would do it.
6
scarves_and_miracles 5 days ago +11
>minor and major celebrities It was mostly minor though, right? I was pretty young, but I seem to remember a lot of washed-up TV actors and Charo all the time.
11
Wonderful_Adagio9346 5 days ago +10
One must remember: movie stars did not do television, and both movie and TV stars did not film domestic commercials. Also, if you're on a hit series, you're not going to be able to schedule an episode, although the structure of the show allowed for very flexible scheduling. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0075529/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_cst_sm#amzn1.imdb.concept.name_credit_category.ace5cb4c-8708-4238-9542-04641e7c8171 Marion Ross set the record with 14 episodes, 6 characters, over 6 seasons, becoming a regular towards the end. (That final murder mystery special has a bonkers cast!!!)
10
biophazer242 5 days ago +18
We assume minor actors but I found one article that says 33 oscar winning actors appeared on the show as a guest. I think some of our perception of minor vs major is going to be skewed by the gap between when it aired and now. Some of the guests on the lists I found most folks today would be like 'who is that?' but in the late 70s early 80s they were a known quantity. It did mention some bigger names people today would know like Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Mickey Rooney though even those names might not register with people under say 30 anymore.

xwhy 5 days ago +11
Don't forget the Love Boat Follies, when the mothers of the four main characters performed, all played by Broadway/Music legends. (Isaac had two legends for mothers -- Pearl Bailey played her first, and then Della Reese in the later seasons.) Correction: I double checked and Carol Channing actually played Julie's aunt in that episode. A different actress played her mother earlier. Ethel Merman and Ann Miller were also in that episode along with Cab Calloway and Van Johson. I hope these names mean something to people other than me....

Even if you look away from the variety show, and towards the more narrative stuff like The Muppets (2015), The Muppets Mayhem and The Muppets Haunted Mansion, I’d say it still applies, to be fair.

Bryan Cranston's role in an episode written by Vince Gilligan was what convinced Vince he was perfect to play Walter White.
7
IntoTheMusic 5 days ago +3
According to Gilligan, AMC wasn't sure about Cranston as Walter White (he said they were like "you want the silly dad from Malcolm in this?"), so he sent them a copy of that episode, and then they agreed.
3
haysoos2 5 days ago +4
Especially at their peak, they would sometimes have some pretty big names in cameo roles just as red herrings. Like Janeane Garofalo as a secretary to one of the suspects, or Kevin Smith as the guy who worked on the loading dock with the suspect.

Frasier, especially the call-in voices
97
ZestycloseSalary3426 5 days ago +36
Damn those call-in voices were incredible lineup - Macaulay Culkin, Elijah Wood, even directors like Ron Howard calling in. The writers must have had some serious connections in Hollywood to get all these A-listers doing random 30 second phone bits.

FYI, once you’re in SAG-AFTRA you can still be a member for life even if you don’t land any more acting work. The only requirement is paying dues. The reason actors sometimes take strange jobs is to make sure they qualify for insurance, which is tied to an income threshold over a 12-month period (though some can retain insurance with enough days worked on set.)
18
judithishere 5 days ago +6
There are stories about Angela Lansbury giving people time on her show due to health issues and needing the insurance. I'm sure others have done this as well but she comes from a socialist family so she really got it

King of the Hill. So many epic guest star roles. Diedrich Bader and Macho Man Randy Savage as a couple of meathead bodybuilders never gets old. A Beer Can Named Desire has Meryl Streep alongside the Dixie Chicks. The Bluegrass as always greener has cameos from Vince Gil, Yakov Smirnov, and Charlie Daniels. And, of course, the Golden Girls are hilarious in Escape From Party Island. "Seals are trash mammals. Everyone knows that!"

Just started my first ever streaming rewatch of Friends and what surprises me is how early they all show up. Like by the end the show was obviously a phenomenon, but relatively early in the first season you have George Clooney, Noah Wyle, Jon Lovitz, Helen Hunt etc

These were cross promotions basically. Clooney and Wyle were on ER at the time. Helen Hunt’s appearance came because of Mad About You (which made it a shared universe with Friends).

Miami Vice is notable because it had a good deal of guest stars that would go on to become huge actors, like Jimmy Smits, Bruce Willis, Helena Bonham Carter, Liam Neeson, Kyra Sedgewick, Giancarlo Esposito, and many many more. That in addition to already prominent stars like Pam Grier, Jeroen Krabbé, or George Takei, and big musicians of the time like Phil Collins or Miles Davis, and then some really oddball ones like Lee Iacocca or G. Gordon Liddy (yes, that [G. Gordon Liddy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_scandal)). It's a seriously impressive roster of guest stars by any metric: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Miami_Vice_guest_appearances

I'm watching Curb Your Enthusiasm for the first time right now, and the number of times I've said "Oh that's \*\*\*!" is insane. Obviously, Larry David is very famous and knows many other famous people but it still surprises me how frequently I see familiar faces.

The number of celebs who called into the Frasier Crane Show is not insignificant. I don't know if they technically qualify as "guest stars" but they were definitely part of the show.

The Bear has a surprising number of guest star appearances. Jon Bernthal, Gillian Jacobs, John Mulaney, and Jamie Lee Curtis from the top of my head.

Dexter. Both in the original run and now in Resurrection they have always been able to get big names for single season arcs

This sub isn't a fan of the show, but Big Bang Theory had a litany of stars on it, and a huge portion of nerd culture legends. They had so many that the wiki has to separate them with categories like Astronauts, Scientists, Entrepreneurs, and of course, Actors. Stan Lee, Neil Gaiman, Bill Nye, Neil Tyson, Stephen Hawking, George Smoot, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, much of the Star Trek and Star Wars casts, Sean Astin. Kareem made an appearance. Many of them appearing as themselves, with plots around the shows or work that they're famous for.

Laugh In. The Rat Pack, John Wayne, Nixon, Carson at his peak, Tony Curtis, Debby Reynolds, Carl Reiner , Cher, Bing Crosby, countless comedians from vaudeville through the borscht belt era…an unbelievable list of both current stars as well as the greats from previous years. And also Tiny Tim.
