Hey I’m looking for a movie recommendation after watching La Heine. What I really found great about the movie is that it was keeping up my attention with funny/absurd scenes or jokes or the constant arguments between these guys but at the same time it was showcasing a serious matter of riots in france and it had a fantastic ending (I loved Soprano as well and I think it’s cause of the same reason but I’m looking for movies now). The movie I’m hoping you will recommend me doesn’t have to be about france riots or the lower class, but I would love if it had these absurd funny elements while still delivering something. It can be also old I just usually find these old movies better. I have watched Do the right thing and it was good and funny (you are 30 cents away from having a quarter), but not as good as La Heine - too goofy maybe (I know it’s supposed to be goofy like that while delivering but its not my thing). Please help and thanks!
City of God hits that perfect balance of dark comedy with serious social commentary and has some absolutely wild cinematography that keeps you glued to the screen

Absolutely. Watched the two back to back and it felt like a perfect double feature!

Un prophète (2009). Another French crime drama film that's incredible. Not funny really, but operatic and quite surreal at times with a great character arc - all taking place within a specific social context specific to france.

You might like City of God, it has that same mix of chaotic energy, humor, and really heavy themes. Trainspotting is another good one, it’s funny in a dark way but still hits hard. I’d also suggest Amores Perros, it’s a bit more serious but still has that raw, real feeling. All of them keep you engaged the whole time like La Haine does.

I liked Les Miserables (2020), another movie about the French suburbs, nothing to do with the musical

Keeping to the French theme, Diva is one of my favourites. A low-key thriller with humour and that special French style.

I'll recommend a film that showcases a serious matter (the prison system) without any humour and which you should watch anyway because it's a masterpiece: Un Prophete (2009).

That combination of absurdity and darker themes makes me think of the Cohen brothers.
There's a spectrum where at one end it's mostly absurdist comedy (e.g The Big Lebowski) but films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men have real pathos and darkness in there too.

Athena by Romian Gravas, (on netflix) set on a french housing estate during a riot, all done in the 'one shot' style, and the opening scene is truly remarkable.
Also maybe 'Battle Of Algiers' is a good companion piece to La Haine, seeing as its all about the algerian battle for independence (it was a french colony)

definitely check out "The Intouchables" if you haven't seen it yet. it's got that mix of humor and deeper themes, plus the chemistry between the leads is fantastic. you might also like "Trainspotting" for its wild moments and serious undertones.

Notre jour viendra
Edit: also with Vincent Cassel, fantastic vehicle for 2 good actors
Edit Edit: Bernie (1996) is a fantastic French mindfuck of a film.

Apart from *Cidade de Deus*- *Y tu mamá también*, *Good Time*, *SLC Punk*, *Down by Law*, and *Nueve reinas* all have a similar energy. Somewhat shady characters wandering through a meandering plot that gets chaotic at times.

What I wrote is that it was goofy, while still delivering a message and I don’t think it’s a bad way to describe the energy of this movie

The movie as a whole isn’t goofy it’s actually sad, but the type of comedy is goofy, it goes off for me as a good movie to watch while stoned tbh
