Working on cars. You used to be able to buy a decent running car for less than $3000 and now every car worth buying is $10,000 or more. The parts have also tripled in price.

Tons of people base concert tickets affordability on the price of T Swift/Beyonce tickets, which are \*vastly\* different from their local club shows.
That said, I still think local club shows have gotten way too expensive in recent years. They're super affordable for adults with full time jobs, but are expensive for high school kids. I went to \*tons\* of shows in high school/college, but I don't know that I could afford that many shows if I were that age today.

Yeah anyone you hear on the radio is pretty much already priced out but I’ve been having fun showing up to tiny local venues and seeing random up and comers. Some are great, some are meh. But the energy is always 100x better than any big headliner I’ve seen
I rarely pay more than $40/ticket

A show is not a concert. I’ve been to hundreds of shows (maybe over a thousand living in NYC for 15 years) and maybe 20 concerts. It’s just a different animal. Concerts are the big events with a stage and a budget.
Yeah only the big names get to play them but they’re still exorbitantly expensive.

In the UK 40k is basically an inflation indicator, as for about 25 years it's scaled pretty evenly with inflation and minimum wage, though newer stuff does usually have a 10% bump in price over older versions, scale changes aside. The biggest driver in price is energy costs, which have been an economic pressure point in the UK for years
1
RustyMR2Apr 3, 2026
+2
Shhh, every time I tell 40k had just kept up with inflation and (mostly) is just as expensive as it was I get downvoted to oblivion.
Couple of years ago (just before the guard refresh) I took an old UK catalogue to compare prices and they were pretty much the same when accounting for inflation.
Except characters though, those are super expensive now.

TBF, skiing was always a rich person sport. The only high school people I knew from our area that skied also drove daddy's hand me down BMW. Skiing meant traveling. Colorado if you could afford it. Vermont if you couldn't.

Grew up in Colorado. A high school bus pass for $5 would get you to the mountain and season tickets were like 250$. It used to be super affordable if you were local but now it’s mostly rich out of state tourists.

This is the best example to me. I grew up occasionally skiing or snowboarding just as a minor hobby. It was something I could afford to do a few times with money I saved working in the summers. With money to spare.
I thought of going up that same mountain this past winter, so I looked up prices to budget, and genuinely decided I was probably never skiing again. No way could a high school kid afford that on their own

Here in the UK it’s always been a rich person sport. I use it as the indicator for someone being middle class. If they went skiing as a holiday as a kid.

That's only in the US where like most everything else the majority of Resorts are owned by a few companies so they don't have to compete.
I've seen where for a long weekend it can cost the same to fly to an European Resort to ski then travel to a US one. The downside of course is you need more travel time.

Camping. used to be the c**** alternative to a real vacation a tent, some basic gear, a cooler and a few days outside. now there are waitlists for campsites booked six months in advance, glamping setups that cost more per night than hotels and an entire gear culture that makes basic equipment feel inadequate unless it's from the right brand. took the one hobby specifically designed to be free and quietly made it expensive honestly.

what bougie bizarro world do you live in? grab a tent, a cooler and a camp stove and head to a state park. yeah you prolly should book well in advance for holiday weekends, but at least in the Midwest, for $20-30ish a night you'll be able to find a spot and have a blast.

This is so not it. Well-designed waterproof tents are mass produced and very affordable. Campsites, unless you're only looking at the extremes, are affordable, and highly desirable camping spots have always been expensive. I don't understand why you're bringing up glamping sites at all, as if that's replaced actual camping, it's a different hobby. And I have never once given a thought to what people in a "gear culture" think about the brand of my equipment, who cares??
You can make camping expensive like you can make any hobby expensive, but saying "camping is expensive" is complete nonsense.

I have to disagree here.
This is the line you might hear from YouTubers whose revenue streams depend on pushing the latest gear.
But in reality you can create stunning work in any genre with 10+ year old cameras and even older lenses. Serious photography is about skill and experience, not expensive gear.

I think I disagree. The biggest difference there is that once you have your gear now, each shot is free, rather than it being money for film and development each time you click your shutter, just to see how badly you did! And yeah, older gear can still get you fantastic shots if you have the chops.

You are privileged and entitled to be able to make this kind of comment—and I am damn envious. You are probably from a 1st world country with safe drinking water straight from the tap, yes?
Countries—yes, entire countries to this day, do not have safe drinkable water from the tap... My country included (IIRC, our neighboring countries too). If you grew up here, drinking water straight from the faucet is a health hazard. At home we order big water containers from water refilling stations and when we're outside, it's either bottled water or some random drink (this is where my example comes in, soda is just cheaper and tastier).
This YouTube short is what I imagine I looked like when I was reading your response:
How I'd love to live in Germany and not have to carry drinking water half my size and weight going up the stairs because I live on the 3rd floor...
Edit: yes, I've tried filters. and no thanks.
