What was the last movie that charmed you?

Posted by thirdpartofthenight

I had such a great time with Linda Linda Linda (2005) last night - genuinely one of the most charming & uplifting films I've watched. In a similar vein, albeit with more raw moments, I had a similar experience with Kore-eda's Like Father, Like Son (2013). So, naturally, I want to know what movie last had this effect on you?

The Holdovers got me recently. Just three people stuck together over Christmas, nothing explosive happens, and somehow by the end you're completely invested in all of them. Paul Giamatti doing the most Paul Giamatti thing imaginable and it works perfectly.

Hail Mary, I can not begin to describe what a breath of fresh air that film is.

JoesShittyOs Mar 25, 2026 +12
I read a misleading spoiler that actually made me like the film a lot more. I heard it had a dark ending so I went in fully expecting the worst in every scenario. Learning the actually story really left me happy

_Steven_Seagal_ Mar 25, 2026 +6
When I first heard of the movie being in production, I read about >!Rocky appearing!< And I shit you not, I actually thought the main character would be tripping so hard he saw >!Sylvester Stallone in his spaceship.!< I'm not sure if that would make the movie better or worse.
6
archdukemovies Mar 25, 2026 +3
I don't watch trailers and I go to the movie theater all the time. So I stand in the hallway outside the auditorium until they are over. I kept hearing someone talk about Rocky and I was wondering if there was a new Rocky Balboa or Creed movie coming up. It wasn't until last week when I saw the Project Hail Mary popcorn bucket featuring Rocky that I realized what it was.
3
_Steven_Seagal_ Mar 25, 2026 +4
Haha, would've been a great sequel. "Rocky in space? They're really milking the franchise now..."

Microwave1213 Mar 25, 2026 +1
FWIW the book ending does have some darker themes than didn’t make their way into the movie, so that might be where the spoiler you heard came from. >!The book goes into more detail about how bad things were getting on earth. Much of the population died from starvation and they had to nuke the polar ice caps to try and keep the temps from getting low enough to the point of human extinction. So Grace’s decision to stay on Erid was really more based in “shit sucks on earth” logic rather than “I’m really happy here” logic.!<
1
Scruffasaurus Mar 26, 2026 +1
I didn’t think it was so much “shit sucks on earth,” but more how much time would have passed (which the movie didn’t get into), could he stay sane on the trip back home, and that there wasn’t really anyone waiting for him back on Earth. But yeah, nuking Antarctica, wars for resources, famine - some darker stuff the movie glossed over
1
JoesShittyOs Mar 25, 2026 +1
I’m not gonna the read the spoiler because I just got the audio book. It’s been great so far.
1
HornFanBBB Mar 26, 2026 +1
Audiobook is AMAZING!
1
rymisoda Mar 25, 2026 +5
Couldn’t agree more! As a fan of the book, they 100% stuck the landing. I can’t think of a time when a movie stayed so close to the text and was also a phenomenally well executed film. I consider the two companion pieces as the movie gives you a stunning visual reference for the book and the book fleshes out everything you love about the movie. All of this on top of simply not having seen a really good movie in theaters in what feels like 3 years. I will be dragging everyone in my life to the theater this month.
5
drgareeyg Mar 25, 2026 +6
Was my first thought as well!! Right after the movie I turned to my bf and said "I don't remember the last time a movie made me feel this way."
6
Boldspaceweasle Mar 25, 2026 +3
Right? I was not expecting to feel the emotions that I did. And yes, I read the book and it *still* got to me. I've been riding that high since Saturday.

I was going to say this. Even though it annoyed me greatly at parts.

Paddington 2. It is the easiest answer, but it really is that charming.

Project Hail Mary. Seen it twice now and it's amazing.

Boldspaceweasle Mar 25, 2026 +7
Right there with ya brother. I saw it in IMAX last weekend and I can't stop thinking about it. I'm going to go to the Dolby theater this weekend because the IMAX is too damn full and I want good center seats.

Train Dreams. It felt like someone telling you about life's harsh realities while giving you a warm hug and whispering "but everything will be OK". Came in blind, and when it was done it imprinted in my mind permanently.

La La Land surprised me. I never thought of watching it because it's not my movie style but maybe I should revise what I think I don't like. That was such a cool watch and reddit convinced me to give it a whirl.

mikeasaurus_ Mar 25, 2026 +3
As a 44-yr old straight male who has seen literally thousands of films, this is my all-time favorite.
3
Boldspaceweasle Mar 25, 2026 +1
I'm glad you said this. I actually own a copy of the Blu-Ray (not sure how it got into my house) and I have yet to watch it. But coming out of the theater for *Project Hail Mary*, I got to talking with my friends and they gushed on about Ryan Gosling's previous great performances and they kept going on and on about La La Land. Guess I'll be watching that this weekend.

Brian and Charles https://m.imdb.com/title/tt13270424/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk I'd recommend watching with as little prior knowledge as possible.

I knew a little about it going in but I had no preconceived idea of how it would pan out. Wrong footed me more than once. I don't know if you've seen Small Prophets, a series on the BBC, but it grabbed me in the exact same way.
1

I've got that in the pile to watch but saving it as I know it'll be right up my street!

Knew even less about that show than Brian and Charles. Literally five minutes in I'm thinking "How can this possibly get better?" when Michael *f******* Palin comes on-screen.

I was so charmed by this one too. I went home to see my mom over Memorial Day weekend in 2017 and she really wanted to go see the movie, so I went with her just to spend time with her, not expecting much of the movie. But it was so sincere and sweet without being too much. I was surprised by how much I liked it.

Eephus (2024) Reminded me of summer and my childhood. Any suburb in the USA.

Amelié When a movie really charms or enchants you, I think you should walk away from it feeling changed but not knowing how. Have you left part of you behind? Have you gained a part? What just happened? Are you even you? Are you still complete? And why are you smiling? The Fabulous Destiny Of Amelie Poulain was the last movie that made this happen for me.

You seem to be on a similar film trajectory to me about 5 years ago during the Covid 19 lockdowns. *Linda Linda Linda* in particular was, yeah, just such a joy to watch. One of my girlfriend's and my own personal favorites. Everything Kore-eda is my jam (he's easily my favorite director of all time) but *Still Walking* (2008) and *Our Little Sister* (2015) are two of my favorite movies, ever. *Nobody Knows* (2004) is also exceptional, but beware - it's the type of film that *will* destroy you.
2
thirdpartofthenight Mar 25, 2026 +2
Kore-eda will pay for his crimes (making me cry). I've only seen Shoplifters (long time ago, need a rewatch), and more recently Broker and Like Father, Like Son. Both of the recent ones got me going at the end.... I'll definitely be checking out Still Walking, Our Little Sister and Nobody Knows!

*Belfast*. Obviously it's a drama and the setting is serious. But there are a bunch of moments that are still generating a goofy smile on my face as I think back on them years after watching it. And the Van Morrison-dominated soundtrack doesn't hurt.

Not the last movie, but one I re-watch every few years is Steven Spielberg's [Always](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096794/) from 1989 gets me in the feels every time. It's got Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter, John Goodman and Audrey Hepburn in her last movie role. Yes, it's a sappy love story, but it also has great airborne firefighting scenes and lots of humor.
1
Dampmaskin Mar 25, 2026 +1
Probably not exactly what you had in mind, but *Sisu - Road to Revenge* is a ridiculously over the top action movie. There is almost no dialog, and everything is about the WW2 hero being hunted by enemies. Naturally that means he's got to blow up a bunch of them. The laws of physics are stretched beyond belief, and so are the limits of the human body and mind. It sometimes borders on splatter. It's really not serious at all. Then comes the ending, and the last two or three minutes of the film are so surprisingly heartwarming, it almost brought a tear to my eye. Charming, in a way.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007) I watched December last or January this year. I'm quite susceptible to Wes Anderson's works and ensamble casts. Amara Karan's presence helped the charming along quite a bit, too.

Champions always gives me a goofy smile. It’s so heartwarming - a go-to for me when I need a boost, I just love it. Along those same lines, Good Boys is so genuinely innocent in its mischievousness, it always warms my heart. That said Project Hail Mary (echoing others here) was phenomenal and so lovely and hopeful.

Maybe "Gentle Giant"? It's a movie about a European Bodybuilder who goes to Thailand for some vacation and finds love. I cannot find the movie title but it's a nice, grounded story. The ending is what charmed me, he's such a gentle giant and seems happy when it's all done. It reminded me of a melancholy, dark Napoleon Dynamite.

I don’t know what charm means exactly, but the last theater film to really engage my imagination and leave me thinking about it for days was Mad Max: Fury Road. There is an excellent book about the making of that film too! The lengths they went to to use real machines and real stunts is shocking. There are so many places they could have use CGI but didn’t. That isn’t to say there isn’t some CGI here and there, but the vast majority of what you see in that film really is some guy on a real, highly modified car actually doing an extremely dangerous thing. That sand storm scene with the wall coming in as they drive into it across the desert… it felt overwhelming in the theater, with the size and sound.. I wish I could go see it again! 🥰

It had a simple compelling story but I was so shocked with the plot twist at the end, it was just one of those movies where everything came together just right and although I’m not one for movies like this I was pleasantly surprised and loved every minute of it.

The Life of Chuck really got to me - and it’s based on a Steven King book!

Maybe random and not exactly what you are looking for, but Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein. I was so charmed by its style, visuals, and overall vibes. The only new movie I have seen in years that I have felt compelled to rewatch right after and has stuck around in my head since.
