It was April 2020, Covid raging everywhere, we had gotten together after being friends for over ten years, miles and miles apart, and on my birthday he stayed up the whole night reading The Little Prince to me, a book that I fell in love with when I was maybe 7. My wife recently told me that the reason she jumps out of her skin a lot is because every relationship she’s been in has turned violent at some point. What I’m talking about is I’m waking through the house and I walk in to the kitchen, she sees me and gets startled. So, she was born and raised in Colombia. She told me that they have really different ideas about fidelity and domestic violence. She’s been hit with a fist before. So one week she actually hit me on accident my head was on her side of the bed, she turned over quickly to kiss me goodnight and I was where she dint expect me to be. Bam, I got her elbow in my forehead. I just yelled “ughhhh, owww… why..?” She reacted reasonably because she was very very sorry. Then later that same week, I had a nightmare (I’m a veteran and I’ve head to kill people very close up,) she woke me up. At the time my dog would have done it but he had cancer and he couldn’t help me. So the next day we were talking and she said something like, “it’s weird, you’ve been to war, and I know you’ve killed people, but you’ve never laid a hand on me, but every single ex of mine has. Why are you different?” I had to think a second, and said well, one I was raised very differently. I basically further said that because I was so intimately familiar with the effects of real violence, it has made me really really reluctant to use it at all. That’s how it should be. You should be lethal, but you should hope and pray you never have to do it, but you should be capable of it. Have a monster in you, but control it, that sort of thing. It still really fucks me up. To think my darling with was getting hit with a closed fist where she needed surgery to fix her face and nose. She actually whistles in her sleep because she was beaten so bad, it’s cute, but I hate when I hear it because of what it means. Sometimes people can tell you something and it’s just, what the hell do you do with that you know? You just gotta support them.

In the (coed) dorms in college, I asked a lady friend to borrow a razor to shave my head. "Can I use one of your lady razors for my skull?" I had a shitty electric razor for my face. She volunteered to do it for me. When she'd finished, I said thanks and went to get a shower. When I came back to my room she was waiting for me and pounced on me like I was prey. Shit was wild.

So I went upstairs and got my electric razor and she cut most of it off right there in the kitchen. It was intimate and special in a way I can't fully describe but something we could always turn back to years later.
