"Corporation cuts off nose to spite face"

Do you think AI might be a catalyst here?

The emergent technology of the times is irrelevant. Ultimately it just boils down to corporate greed and short sightedness.

One of the weirdest societal things I know are news articles which place how much profit some corporation is making right next to the amount of jobs they are eliminating. As if these 2 things are somehow related. Can anybody explain why they do it? To a business, workers are a resource. If they are no longer needed, they are let go. Even if they are needed, but the money used to pay them gets a better return if spent elsewhere, they are let go. It doesn’t matter if a business a posting a loss, posting a profit of a few million or 10 billion. Never does, never will. So why are people LARPing these things are somehow connected? Then they get to rage in comments sections yet again how ”this makes no sense!!” when it most certainly does. Corporations do not exist to keep people on the payroll.

I agree and I don't understand the downvotes. This is the honest truth, which is why capitalism should burn.

It's 2 way thing. Most workers go to work for a paycheck. They enter a transactional relationship for their personal gain and benefit. When either party no longer finds themselves desiring to continue the relationship, it stops. You don't force people to buy and pay for a certain product or service. You don't force people to go to work for a certain employer. You don't force employers to maintain employment of people they no longer wish to retain. Employers thinking of working only as a resource are evil! Okay, so what are employees only thinking of their employer as a paycheck? Why would this be any different?

Absolutely. This is why these companies should not benefit from taxpayers money, they are not a public service and their business is not to keep people employed. Boeing — ~15.5 billion USD Intel — ~8.4 billion USD Ford Motor — ~7.7 billion USD General Motors — ~7.5 billion USD Micron Technology — ~6.8 billion USD Amazon — ~5.9 billion USD

We're in a global recession. What sounds better to shareholders? "We laid off 10% of the company because the economy isn't doing great and we need to cut costs" or "We laid off 10% of our company because we are more efficient with AI."

AI thing is a red herring. Economy is tanking and new sales have been tanking for a few quarters now. The chickens have come home to roost. Former Oracle sales here….

They publicly said they were cutting these jobs to pay for AI advancements.

Yes the question is if we publicly believe them

that's a massive number, honestly makes you wonder about the future of the company and tech in general. definitely a tough time for those affected.

Every c-suite in the country is taking notes.  As soon as AI can have one person “handle” the work of several roles, or consultant agencies hone their pitch to step in and take over administrative departments (HR, marketing, IT), there will be mass layoffs in every industry.

This was also driven by their extreme debt spending on A.I.

At least they no longer work for a billionaire. Isn’t that a win? Listnookors? Hello?

The goal is to eliminate the billionaire, not leave tens of thousands suddenly scrambling for jobs just to keep a roof over their heads and medical insurance going in a shitty job market while the billionaire comes out *more* valuable. Billionaires can get fucked for all the working class cares, but it's always the peons left holding the bag.

Rich trying to get richer on the corpses of their employees (or rather, in this case, ex employees) I guess Larry wants to give his kid more money for his merger.

This is one of the biggest layoffs in history. Many of these jobs were not necessary to society, or even profit. I hope a lot of these folks find a safe place to land soon, but never ever trust white collar corporate again. I hope most of the impacted people leave the sector for careers that matter and are always in demand: healthcare, primary education, social work, trades, and farming.

Sucks for any hospital using the Cerner EHR. Already a piss poor system that has been vulnerable to cyber attacks, I’m sure it’s going to just rust and collapse soon. No other option than Epic which is wildly expensive to implement. Struggling hospitals may need help that the government will not offer so massive health systems will continue to monopolize. It’s not a bright looking future for healthcare as a whole.
