Second this, excellent, excellent show. Though hard to find now in the US

How to watch in the US I was so bummed when Netflix dropped it before the next seasons came to Netflix

Three years waiting for the fifth and final season, and so far nothing. But yeah, the series is excellent.

Narcissus87 Apr 14, 2026 +8
The production budget is just insane, probably the most impressive outside of your Game of Thrones' or Boardwalk Empires

This one, OP. Absolutely must watch. In German.

Yeah watching it in German absolutely improves the show. Eventually you get used to hearing certain words and names. Absolutely awesome show. Resubscribed to Netflix just to rewatch it

Agree about the German part. The English dub is cringe.
42
andysniper Apr 14, 2026 +16
I started watching the subbed version, then switched to the dub to see what it is like. There is a scene early on where a coroner is carrying out a postmortem on a child and is so overly cheery in the dub it took me right out. Switched straight back to subs.

D A Я K is both simple and complex in the best way. The way the story unfolds is perfection. [The official website](https://www.dark.netflix.io/en) gives you spoiler-free updates based on the episode you’re currently watching. It shows you everything up to that point, and nothing after. When you watch another episode or three, you can return and get caught right up without being spoiled for future episodes.

Top five show even if you include the English ones

Kingdom (Korean show about zombie apocalypse set in 1601). It's on Netflix and only has two seasons plus a prequel movie but the story is wrapped up fairly well.

bullseye717 Apr 14, 2026 +57
The writer also did Signal and a much more obscure but very entertaining show called Golden House.
57

Signal is FANTASTIC

StardustOasis Apr 14, 2026 +33
There's loads of good Korean fantasy and sci-fi on netflix to be honest.
33
libra00 Apr 14, 2026 +27
F*** yes, this show is great. As a life-long fan of zombie movies this is some of the most original and creative zombie media in recent memory and I wish there was more of it/more like it.

The bureau is an absolute belter.
32
Nice_nice50 Apr 14, 2026 +16
It was totally unparalleled until the last season. God knows what the showrunner was thinking handing it over

This! I was waiting for someone to mention The Bureau! And since you recommended the bureau, I look forward to your other recommendations. On my watchlist!

The Deutschland series had be absolutely rapt for a month straight.
19
stringrandom Apr 14, 2026 +7
I was watching a couple of episodes of the first Deutschland with one of my kids and had to explain to them that yes, the show was fiction, but also yes, that Able Archer was real and there was a basis of truth to the whole thing. Got ourselves into a life during the Cold War rabbit hole after that.

Pachinko
172
BSDC Apr 14, 2026 +44
Came here to make sure this was mentioned. Pachinko is so god damn good. Slow burning show, not for everyone, but I love it so much. Maybe mentioning that Anna Sawai is in it, who played Toda Mariko in Shogun, will tempt some people to watch it, but seriously, every actor in Pachinko is incredible. Youn Yuh-jung, who won the best supporting actress Oscar for Minari, is also in it, and is extraordinary.

I tried to watch it but it’s so f****** sad - is read the book and just kept thinking about what was going to happen and it made me too sad Might lot have helped that I was 8 months pregnant when I tried to watch…

The Bridge (Bron / Broen). It’s a Swedish/Danish crime series. I think a US version exists (I might be mistaken), but I don’t think I need to see it when the Nordic version exists. It’s superb.

And Giri/Haji, the trifecta of solid foreigner plus Japanese shows
13
dabocx Apr 14, 2026 +19
I really like that show but I hate the way the main character is treated. Why does everyone in the show act like he's the coolest dude of all time?
19
RustyU Apr 14, 2026 +36
Because it's based on his memoir, which is apparently mostly fantasy.
36

That show is so good. Not very high hopes for season two though. Sounds like a cash grab.

Midnight Diner - the TV equivalent of a warm bowl of ramen on a cold night in Tokyo
27
TimmyB02 Apr 14, 2026 +89
If you like political thrillers check out Borgen, it's Danish. If you like comedies, check out Rundfunk. But be aware that it is Dutch humour and can get quite a bit dark compared to other cultures humour lol. If you like historical war dramas, check out Tuntematon Sotilas (2018) (The Unknown Soldier), it's Finnish. There are also Films.
89
slate_206 Apr 14, 2026 +14
Borgen was a lot of fun.
14
Crisis_panzersuit Apr 14, 2026 +27
Lilyhammer is also really good if you like humor. Solid amount of english, but mostly norwegian.  Nobel is good if you want serious, not great, but good.
27
AlwaysHappy4Kitties Apr 14, 2026 +9
for another Nordic recomendation, Beforeingers from HBO Nordic People from the past show up in modern day Norway. One of these beforeingers is (diversity) hired in the police force to help solve a crimes related to these travelers and is paired up with a veteran cop ( that has is own issues with these travelers). It's a bit X-files mixed with Twin Peaks. Made by HBO Nordic [trailer for season 1](https://youtu.be/ASr0n5LnWnU?is=keQgYtJb6nO-zqs6)
9
FisherKelTath00 Apr 14, 2026 +5
Hell yeah, Pilou Asbaek is so good in Borgen. It’s also one of the few roles I’ve seen him in where he isn’t a baddy.

Was going to recommend Gomorrah too. Incredible show and music also
8
Wazzoo1 Apr 14, 2026 +7
Also recommend ZeroZeroZero (same guy who wrote Gomorrah). Two-thirds of it is in Spanish and Italian. The only English scenes are when the middle man family is in a scene.
7
Stablebrew Apr 14, 2026 +15
recommended Gomorrah, too. S1 finale was so intense, I jumped from the couch, running left and right in front of the TV, and yelled "oh my god! OH! MY! GOD! This can't be!" This been years since a show did that to me

100 years of solitude on Netflix. I love the book, and it’s a cool show, all in (Colombian) Spanish
41
wolfjeanne Apr 14, 2026 +9
Such beautiful cinematography. Really captures the vibe of the book, which is a big feat. Also full on bi panic over half the actors in that show, my god.
9
lexiebeef Apr 14, 2026 +5
There is a constant fight in my brain whether I find fully-moustached Aureliano Buendia or tattooed bald Jose Arcadio (II) hotter and I just can’t decide. It’s such a hot cast and it’s soooo refreshing to see new actors on my tv, I’m so done with the same actors over and over again. Also, shoutout to the actress who played older Ursula, she’s so badass in the show and just exactly how I imagined Ursula in the books.

Landlubber77 Apr 14, 2026 +50
Marianne It's an absolute shit your pants experience. It's in French with subtitles or you can watch it dubbed in English, but it's better in the original French in my opinion. There's only one 8-episode season which makes it an instant classic in my book because they get out before they overstay their welcome and leave you wanting more. It's legitimately one of the scariest things I've ever watched.
50
Sans-valeur Apr 14, 2026 +15
I’ve never been afraid of witches, but god damn that lady was creepy as f***, that’s about the most perfect casting you can get. And sea side villages are creepy as f*** straight up 10/10 show
15
Landlubber77 Apr 14, 2026 +7
I was reluctant to watch it when it was initially recommended to me because witches never sounded like an appealing or scary subject of a horror story for me. Then I remembered I had the same reluctance to watch/read Game of Thrones because I wasn't "into wizards and dragons and shit" as I put it back then lol. Gave that one a chance and it blew me away so I tried Marianne against my better instincts. Moral of the story for me I guess is not to trust my instincts.
7
roytography Apr 14, 2026 +8
My wife absolutely loves creepy shit. Found this and after the first episode she said she didn't know if she wanted to watch it anymore. I sat there with her and watched every one. Easily one of the best creepy things I have seen and cannot recommend it more.
8
Landlubber77 Apr 14, 2026 +5
Same, it struck the perfect nerve with me, can't really describe it. Maybe it being in French added to the eeriness or *otherness* of it.

Lupin

perplexedtv Apr 14, 2026 +22
It's a 6/10 at best. The scenarios are nonsense and a lot of the acting is sub-par.
22
AngryAncestor Apr 14, 2026 +8
It's the best of its kind. If you suspend your disbelief it's extremely entertaining, and maybe it's because I don't speak French but I thought the acting was totally acceptable
8
OilInternational2566 Apr 14, 2026 +12
Lupin was amazing. Another great French/UK coproduction was “War of the Worlds” (2019) the TV series. Was dark as f***.

"Unit One." From Denmark - a police show featuring Mads Mikkleson and several other excellent actors who are not as well known. "Unit One" is a mobile task force that travels across Denmark to help local police with difficult cases. 8/1 on IMDB but 10/10 for me! I have re-watched it a couple of times.
12
NortonBurns Apr 14, 2026 +40
Casa de Papel (also known in English as Money Heist). There's also a spin-off called Berlin which you should save until after the main show. I know you're going to get reams of people saying Dark, but personally I found it started well but trailed off by the end. People also say that about Casa de Papel too, so I guess it depends what floats your boat ;) Lupin - French 'gentleman theif' Squid Game - though I'd be surprised if there are many people who haven't seen this yet. Alice in Borderland - Japanese sci-fi/mystery Borgen - Danish political thriller (There's also a recent spin-off, Power & Glory, that I haven't seen yet) The Bridge - Danish/Swedish police drama (this was remade in English, twice, once in the US & once in the UK as The Tunnel, but the original is far better.) Giri/Haji - Japanese/British collaboration. Thriller. Millennium (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) - scandi noir (English remake isn't as good) The Killing (Forbrydelsen) The first internationally popular scandi noir show. (Also suffers a poor English remake)
40
kristinL356 Apr 14, 2026 +10
I absolutely love Giri/Haji (though I'm not sure it counts as primarily not in English).

JustPiera Apr 14, 2026 +6
"Girl From Nowhere" from Thailand (netflix). It's an anthology series centered on a karmic entity who takes the form of a schoolgirl, dishing out revenge to each school she visits. It's dark and addictive. Just don't confuse it with a recent reboot "Girl From Nowhere: The Reset" (not half as good at the original)

Le Bureau des Légendes HPI both have been remade as American shows (one on Paramount, the other on ABC with Kaitlin Olson). Both are far superior to the American versions.

The Swedish tv show Kalifat (”Caliphate”) is terrifying because of how real it felt. I am still horrified by the ending and the show deeply affected me in ways few shows ever have
5

Money Heist, Spanish.
6
okmijnmko Apr 14, 2026 +5
Depends what you like. I'm in Montreal & exclusively French shows that locals love: 19-2 (2011–2015): A police drama focusing on the intense lives and partnership of two Montreal police officers. La nuit où Laurier Gaudreault s'est réveillé (2022): A fun miniseries about family secrets and trauma. Les Honorables (2019-2022): A drama series following a judge's family doing vigilante justice after their daughter's killer got acquitted. Plan B (2017-): An anthology of dramas+ regarding this service allowing people to go back in time to fix mistakes. And for a quasi-reality show but really meant as pure comedy, watch Les Detestables. It's like Mr Bean but if you know what they are saying as a non-local, it's crazy hilarious.

Le Bureau. It has an American version called the Agency with heavy hitters Jeffrey Wright, Michael Fassbender and ~~Gene Hackman~~ Richard Gere and I'm still going to argue the French version is better Rabo de Peixe - Portuguese, very enjoyable

Both are from Argentina: Okupas, a miniseries about a group of friends living in a squatted house. It explores friendship, drugs, crime. Los Simuladores, think of the A-Team, but they rely on deception to solve problems. Each episode even ends with the victim unknowingly lighting a cigar for the team leader (Disculpe, ¿fuego tiene?).

- El fin de la comedia (absurd humour kind of similar to Louie) - El Ministerio del Tiempo (super creative plot. There's a secret Ministry in Spain in charge of safeguarding some time travel portals that connect with key historical moments in the history of Spain, so that nobody can alter what happened in the past for any good or bad reason)

[The BR Chopra production of the Mahabharata](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahabharat_(1988_TV_series\)) - one of the most watched shows ever. It practically brought India to a standstill when first aired, and even its repeat airings could garner 5 million viewers an episode. [The Chinese production of Three Kingdoms](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Kingdoms_(TV_series\)) - just a top tier incredible epic.

El Encargado (Spanish) - I've never really seen this mentioned but it's an amazing show. Masterful acting by Guillermo Francella. He plays the superintendent of a residential building who seems like a nice, friendly, nonthreatening guy on the surface, but a series of events reveals how far he's willing to go to maintain his job (I don't want to give away too much).

Gomorrah Italian mafia show. not the romanticised style created by Coppola and Scorcese. It's about today's mafia in urban ghetto, and organized crime in Europe.

I thought City of Shadows was perfect. Gaudi's architecture is effectively a character, used spectacularly. My Spanish is pretty good, but I found myself lost on a regular basis. Then I realized on closer attention that some characters were speaking Catalan in informal conversations.

Made in Heaven on prime video I know most people are western here and would have a general averment to Indian content but this was a beautiful anthropological series. Through the lives of 2 wedding planners in India they depicted the hypocrisy of the rich with one wedding a episode.  But it goes deeper and through the lives of the employees of the company it contrasts the choices lower classes make and how they aren't inherently better either and ig how morality is beyond class.  Id certainly say it's a layered show. Not heavy at all, p fun and the wedding sets are some of the most beautiful I've seen

If you include Anime there's plenty. Sure there's a lot of garbage or weird "barely disguised f*****" stuff. But there's also really good ones, though the good ones often get an English dub pretty quick. If you want something shorter to try and get into it I can recommend a few: * FLCL Ok, ok, I know "barely disguised f*****" and I come right out with FLCL. But the whole thing is 6 episodes, and is a big metaphor for puberty and does a good job of showing a young boy becoming a young man struggling to be treated like he's not a kid anymore while learning to handle new emotions. * Stein's Gate One of the best portrayals of PTSD in media I've seen. Especially disassociation where one of the character says something like >!I wasn't even seeing her as a person anymore, but a problem I needed to solve!< * Freiren: Beyond Journey's End (Still ongoing) A very wholesome and slow starting anime about a mage who is seeking to reunite with a friend from her past who has died. * Cowboy Bebop Action packed but grounded show about bounty hunters in space and the inability to escape your past. * Lupin III A wacky show about the antics of Lupin III, grandson of Arsène Lupin the famous gentleman thief. It's just good fun and feels a bit like loony tunes with some of the silly stuff that goes on.
