Not talking about the most popular ones. I mean a game that genuinely changed how you think or feel. For me it was Journey — finished it in 2 hours but thought about it for weeks. What's yours?
Either Stray or Spiritfarer. Both of those had some intense stories that really made me feel a lot of emotions. I cried during both.

Stray hits different! Scientifically, playing as a cat triggers a unique 'Interspecies Empathy' that most human-centric games miss. Did the ending leave you feeling hopeful or just completely heartbroken?

It was a bittersweet ending for me. There is such an incredible sense of grief and loss and yet, life goes on.

I see there are multiple games in this series. Is there an order to them or can I play this title alone?
1
Tabasco_RedMar 27, 2026

You can play automata alone. The game works pretty much as a standalone with some minor nods and cameos of other titles but nothing that will change your lore or game exp
If you still want to play other titles for other reasons try replicant

Outer Wilds is a masterpiece of 'Curiosity-Driven Progress.' It’s amazing how it uses knowledge as the only literal 'key' to the universe. Did you manage to finish it without looking up any spoilers?

hmm, portal. It's like 3 hours, the humor holds up, and that final boss fight with Still Alive playing is permanently etched into my brain. Plus it teaches you to think differently without ever feeling like homework. Honorable mention to Outer Wilds though - that

For some reason I sometimes imagine myself in the scenario of having to convince someone that games can be considered a form of art, and Hollow Knight is the first game that comes to mind for me. I'm sure there are even better examples out there, but it's the one I choose. Yeah, it's visually beautiful and has great music, but the dedication that was put into perfecting the actual gameplay mechanics also came from a place of passion and love for the activity of gaming.

Outer Wilds for me. The whole thing runs on curiosity alone, no levels, no XP, just you and a solar system full of questions. As someone learning to code I found it wild that the entire game is basically one big physics simulation underneath. Finished it during exam season and could not stop thinking about the ending for weeks.

Hellblade is a masterclass in 'Binaural Audio'—it’s fascinating how they used sound science to simulate psychosis and build genuine empathy. And Doom? That’s basically the 'Big Bang' of FPS architecture. Did the psychological intensity of Hellblade make it hard for you to play for long periods, or were you too hooked to stop?

plorklesMar 27, 2026

Oh wow. That explains the excellent audio in the game.
It actually kept me hooked from start to finish. The game, albeit quite short, was wonderfully created. I also learned a lot about psychosis.
I will always remember the incredible soundtrack of Doom btw. I actually listen to it whenever I work out.

I'd say Outer Wilds for me—I went in completely blind and there's this moment where the whole universe just \*clicks\* and you realize what's actually happening, and I couldn't stop thinking about the implications for like a month. Journey's similar in that way where it's short but emotionally dense, so I get why that stuck with you. Do games like that hit different for you now, or did Journey just happen to catch you at the right time?

I like a lot of these answers. Outer Wilds, and Portal are my favorites from what was listed. Personally I would add Shadow of the Colossus. The way it has you explore empty lands, and fight only a handful of bosses. Nothing else, yet it's filled to the brim.

super mario bros: it redefined how games are designed and implemented. it is still studied today.
warcraft 3/ starcraft. redefined the entire RTS genre. defined it so much it basically killed every other competition.
world of warcraft. when people say mmorpg they say that. for good reason. it is byfar the most popular mmo. and most of the other newer mmo draws inspiration from it
street fighter 3rd strike. probably the most iconic fighter in history. still played and highly competitive.
dota or lol. both are popular moba that catapulted esports.
Counter strike. the titan of tac shooters who still dominates to this day.
personal recommendations at this point
mass effect 1-3. great story, middling game play but serviceable
xcom enemy unknown/enemy within and xcom 2. single handedly brought turn based tactical games into the modern era. unfortunately it has been a long time since xcom 2 and no word of xcom 3. i believe Phoenix point is better game if u want a harder and deeper version.
Titanfall 2. protect the pilot. great story and game play. cant say more otherwise it will spoil it. it is definitely a game that u play blind. precursor to apex legends.
i could go on but i don't have the time
