Not “bad” movies Im talking about films that are intentionally exhausting, emotionally draining, or even frustrating to sit through. The kind where you respect what its doing… but you’d never casually rewatch it. Sometimes its the pacing, sometimes the tone, sometimes it just refuses to give you any relief.
Whats the first movie that comes to your mind?
*Paint Drying*. A filmmaker wanted to protest film censorship in the UK, so he made a 'movie' that was just a single 10 hour static shot of paint drying. The idea was to submit it to the British Board of Film Classification for an age rating, forcing them to sit through the whole thing.

This is literally the best and most true answer. For those that don’t mind spoilers a couple gets house invaded by two complete strangers that you just absolutely loathe as they torture this couple of nice people. Finally after all this torment one of the people break free and gets the climax victory moment where they are able to attack one of the invaders and subdue them and as you watch you go heck yeah kind of like in Get Out when he finally has his moment of killing the evil family… but then suddenly the other invader takes a remote control and just goes wait a moment this shouldn’t have happened and REWINDS TIME and him and his fellow torture partner just get away scot* (whoops my bad!) free and there’s no happy ending. I remember renting this on a first date and we were both just sitting there like what the f did we just see

And it succeeded.

You mentioned the Evil Dead movies, so I'll say this - the Evil Dead remake made me feel like that. Deeply disturbing-type violence/horror. Granted, I saw it in theaters at a 10pm showing by myself so maybe the ambience fueled that feeling, but I went into it thinking that it would be like the Bruce Campbell versions, with the moments of comedic relief. Nope. Just straight gas pedal all the way through.

It's always been interesting to me that JK's father was music director at University of Montana. He was an incredibly sweet, beloved mentor, nothing like JK's character in the film lol.

A friend of my brother told him the movie wasn't an "accurate" portrayal of jazz music. I told him that "Whiplash" is about abusive power dynamics; "jazz music" just happens to be the backdrop for the story. Just as 'Field of Dreams' isn't actually about baseball, it's about father-son relationship; baseball is just the framing device. (And as a former singer... yeah, DEFINITELY knew some conductors like that lol)

mother! is probably a good rec in this regard. The whole concept is to make you feel bad for existing on this planet and using its resources for your personal gain. And even if it's not clear, it still punishes the audience by basically resetting everything and forcing the mother to accept this perpetual circle of despair.

I've had too much real life (resulting in a PTSD diagnosis several times over) to actually enjoy any kind of media that is intended to spike the consumer's anxiety, or any themes of wondering if the protagonist is insane.
I just watched a 13 minute recap of this movie and noped the f*** outta there.
I get that this film probably has some striking visuals along with it's weirdly specific alligorical theme of God and Mother Earth in a continuous cycle of his ego essentially destroying her (I'm not even gonna talk about the murder and ritualistic and cannibalism of an infant) through his hubris.
This movie sounds like some kind of shit that even a coked up Stephen King would have nightmares about.

I watched it with my then gf when we were both deep in addiction, shooting up several times per day. We were too shocked to realize we should maybe stop watching, and stared at the screen, unmoving and in silence.
When it was over we didn't move for a while, just kept watching the credits. I felt like my insides were being crushed in a vise and I was stuck for fear of being overwhelmed by anxiety if I moved. It hit *way* too close to home. Just hearing the score makes me extremely uncomfortable even though it's been years.

Yea, in the movie Melancholia is a recently discovered rogue planet which is going to hit Earth and kill everyone.
EDIT: The basic idea of the movie is that the main character is severly depressed, but with the coming apocalypse, she's the only one functioning in somewhat rational way. It's because unlike the mentally healthy others, she is used to being hopeless and without happiness. So in a time of crisis, she is the most rational, in a way.

This. Literally punishment.. The first 30 minutes ot Irreversible feature a low-frequency, infrasound noise designed to induce anxiety, nausea, and physical discomfort in the audience. Reports from its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival mentioned audience members walking out, fainting, or vomiting due to the film's extremely graphic, visceral, and disturbing scenes.
The movie goes in reverse chronological order similar to the movie Memento. I hear there is also a version that goes in chronological order.

My buddy and I watched this because we both enjoy independent/arthouse style movies and he'd heard it was really interesting. About 8 or 9 minutes in I asked him, "Sean, where is any single physical thing in relation to anything else in this movie?"

This is how I feel about Meet the Parents. I know it’s funny (and I laughed too), but goddamn it makes people like me so uncomfortable that we can’t ever really enjoy it. Same reason I failed twice at watching Beef. They all make me SO uncomfortable.

Yeah they really beat you over the head with the bit about the shareholders wanting Neo to make a reboot Matrix game and they were going to do it with or without him, but they'd rather do it with him. It's like, we get it, you didn't want to do this, but if someone's going to corrupt your legacy, it's going to be you lmao

He hated how celebrated and revered the character of Arthur / Joker was after the release of the first movie. He clearly did not intend for that character to be received that way, so he made the second one as a f*** you to everyone who held him in that kind of regard. It’s a tough watch seeing your hero get torn up like that.
38
NatwandaMar 24, 2026
+35
It’s possible to destroy the character and still make it an entertaining film. He didn’t intentionally harm his career and credibility when he signed on to do a sequel with a 200 million dollar budget just to own random incels who connected with the character. And he especially didn’t make a terrible film just to bite the hand that feeds like suggested above. That’s ridiculous. He still tried to make a movie he thought people would like and he failed miserably. This isn’t the first time his career he made a shit sequel.
That movie was *pure ass*

Grave of the Fireflies. Late 80’s Anime on the end WWII and the effects on society in Japan. I watched it once and will never watch it again. But I will still recommend watching it to anyone who has never seen it. The story is just devastating.

I got a lot out of it the second time I watched it. The first was as a kid and the second as a mother. I *might* rewatch in another decade. I did have to make art about it the 2nd time to help myself calm down, so who knows what will happen if I watch it again? A truly brilliant film.

For a movie that was a hard watch but at the same time being a great film with great acting I would go easily with 'Wind River' a very hard watch at times but at the same time being a really good film, the message at the end left me with a bewildered look on my face and feeling angry at it, I believe I did say out loud "What the f***!".

Grave of the Fireflies. It’s just so bleak. I get that the message is intended to point out the horrors of war and specifically the atomic bomb and that makes it a difficult watch. You could be lulled into thinking the outcome will inevitably be positive since it’s a Ghibli film but I think that’s what makes it harder to watch
