What’s a movie that has a premise or trailer that’s so eye rolling you thought would be bad, but turned out good?

Posted by TheDragonReborn726

For me it has to be Warrior (2011). I vividly remember the trailer I laughed out loud about. “Oh that’s realistic two brothers in a UFC tournament that no one knew about.” For some reason I still saw it in theaters, I was blown away. Not that’s it’s the greatest movie of all time but how much I absolutely loved it after how bad I thought the premise was. Just rewatched it last night it’s still great. How about for you all?

“They’re making a movie about the Pirates of the Caribbean ride?”
2729
latelyimawake Mar 29, 2026 +445
This is the one. The level of dunking we were all doing on that movie before it came out was an all time high. Then we all saw it and were like wait why was that actually a really good movie?!
445
selftaughtgenius Mar 29, 2026 +169
Ohmygod I remember thinking it was the most unhinged basis for a movie. The ride was cheesy as hell when I went to Disneyland as a kid in the late 80s and I remember my parents reeling with nostalgia, which made it even cheesier. Plus Johnny Depp in a Disney role? No one knew what the f*** was going on. 🤣 And then it was actually so much fun!

Comrade_Falcon Mar 29, 2026 +36
It had a baller teaser trailer though.

lipp79 Mar 29, 2026 +14
The CGI in the final fight scene in the cavern when they’re fighting the pirates and Barbosa is fighting Jack and they move in and out of the moonlight was so f****** cool.

The_Void_Reaver Mar 29, 2026 +121
Not just a really good movie. It's arguably still the best adventure movie of this century.

sharrrper Mar 29, 2026 +97
Don't forget they made TWO movies that year based on a ride. The massively successful Pirates, and the total flop Haunted Mansion. Everyone's expectations were right about ONE of them.
97
MD_Lincoln Mar 29, 2026 +29
I’m sad that Haunted Mansion was a flop, the ride is my favorite in the park and we love the film in my house; we quote “I don’t like Latin.” on a super regular basis
29
AnalTyrant Mar 29, 2026 +29
I worked at a theater when that one came out, selling tickets at the box office, and I overheard another cashier responding to a patron's question of "is that Pirates of the Caribbean movie any good?" and my coworker responded with "have you ever been on the ride? It's exactly like that, it's so good." I don't remember if that answer sold the tickets, but I remember thinking "what the hell kind of response is that? This isn't a movie that is exactly like that ride, this has an actual story and characters and stuff." It just sticks with me as a really weird answer to that sort of question. Like, sure, it captures a good chunk of the atmosphere from the ride, but that's about where the similarities stop.
29
xdkarmadx Mar 29, 2026 +9
That’s a “I haven’t seen it but have to recommend it” answer. Just like waiters give the “I haven’t had it but have to recommend it” answer.

Pookieeatworld Mar 29, 2026 +118
I was so pissed when i went to Disney in Orlando the year the 2nd movie came out and they didn't have the ride up and running because of remodeling it. To this day I've never been on it.
118
ghetoyoda Mar 29, 2026 +94
If you saw the movies before the ride you'll probably be a little disappointed tbh. As much as people love it, it's still very much an older magic kingdom dark ride.
94
Hanz_VonManstrom Mar 29, 2026 +61
It’s a great ride to go on after you’ve been walking around in the heat all day. Just relaxing on a boat ride in the a/c
61
yeahright17 Mar 29, 2026 +17
My favorite ride at the end of the day too. We always run down after fireworks and do jungle cruise and Pirates before they close. They're both walk ons at that point. Pretty much my favorite memory every year. Last year we went on the last Pirates boat of the night with a couple from Germany.
17
RefinedBean Mar 29, 2026 +37
I liked it better before adding in all the stuff from the movie, too. Had more charm.

Do yourself a favor and ride the one at Disneyland instead. It’s a better version and around 15 minutes long.
24
mraargh Mar 29, 2026 +16
I went on the ride after the movies. From what i could discern, all they did was add was shoehorn in Jack Sparrow in spots.
16
nighthawk_md Mar 29, 2026 +16
They took out the Yo-Ho song in many of the scenes which just ran continuously on the old version also. The new soundtrack better fits the visuals now, which gives it a little edge. The original was just kinda silly/goofy, IMO. Still a favorite.
16
Walk_Run_Skip Mar 29, 2026 +8
IIRC they also gave one the ladies being chased around by a pirate a platter of food to hold

6
Evilsausage87 Mar 29, 2026 +13
Acting - career defining performances Music - epic and recognizable Visuals - sumptuous with tasteful use of cgi Writing - quotable and memeable I could go on but you get my point. It’s not Gone With The Wind but damn if it’s not a swashbuckling Hollywood blockbuster of all time.

Face/Off. The premise still makes me laugh.
467
twerkallknight Mar 29, 2026 +198
The premise is so hilariously brilliant. Get two iconic, idiosyncratic actors. Make them play amped up versions of themselves. Then make them play those versions of each other. Then make them play versions of each other pretending to be versions of themselves. F****** sick, dude.

I came here specifically to ensure that Face/Off was represented. With such a ridiculous premise, the film has no damned right to be as good as it is.

The Lego Movie. Looked and sounded like just another 2 Hour ad for an existing brand like the Angry Birds movie or worst The emoji Movie.  The movie turned out to be amazing. It was emotional, creative, funny with a poignant message at the end.  And it's animation was gorgeous.  Way way better than a movie about literal Legos ever deserves.

woohooguy Mar 29, 2026 +206
There are so many little clever things in the movie that makes the entire movie. Emmet's scream as he falls into the Wild West, replacing the Indian cry for just mere seconds always makes me laugh.

The Lego Movie predates both Angry Birds and Emoji movies. Emoji movie specifically probably exists *because* of the success of Lego.

Barbie was a similar rug pull in its way. Both movies are good so far beyond what the premise even needed.

100% on Barbie movie. I kept saying to myself 'how is this even supposed to work?' The toys are alive in toy world but played with here? What?!' ..but they made it work.

Michelle Rodriguez always understands the assignment.
124
Dr_Identity Mar 29, 2026 +34
What was great too is that they all had good chemistry. They really nailed the "tragic backstory to found family" pipeline that every D&D party I've ever been in has been defined by.
34

I can not hear the name Johnathan spoken without hearing (at least in hey head), " OH Jarnathan!"
45
Medium_Well_Soyuz_1 Mar 30, 2026 +5
Jarnathan is such a good DND name. Really captures the vibe of players putting you on the spot to name a character
5
UF1977 Mar 29, 2026 +126
Yep. I had zero interest in watching it, never been into D&D or other RPGs, not my realm. Two of my kids are into D&D In a big way and insisted on watching it, I just decided to hang out with them while it was on. If you’re going to adapt a movie from a property with a lot of lore, this is the way to do it. The kids enjoyed it as an original story faithfully within the world they knew so much about…I didn’t know anything about it at all and still enjoyed it. They just caught a lot more of the references than I did.
126
Chiron723 Mar 29, 2026 +104
The best part of the movie is if you're familiar with tabletop RPGs in general, the movie feels like an actual game of DnD, with all the highs, lows, and ass pulls that encompass. For example, the walking stick that turns out to be a portal device? No actual device exists in DnD, but it's the exact kind of bullshit that a DM would come up with to proceed with the story after the group critically fails the puzzle they set up.
104
GravSlingshot Mar 29, 2026 +66
And then that improvised solution turns into the one thing the players use for the rest of the campaign to solve all their problems.
66
Canotic Mar 29, 2026 +48
The action sequences also move at about six seconds intervals. Edit : my favourite is the GMPC who shows up out of nowhere, outshines everyone in the party, infodumps about the plot and the big bad end guy, then promptly leaves for no good reason so he doesn't take over the campaign.
48
ToxinArrow Mar 29, 2026 +31
Him walking straight up and over the rock and not going around it was f****** hilarious. Bro just straight lined it on roll20
31
faraque Mar 29, 2026 +15
That scene was improvised. They were supposed to yell cut and end it just after he walked away, but let it run to see what he would do.
15
ToxinArrow Mar 29, 2026 +13
Beautiful. He knew exactly what he was doing then.
13
The_Void_Reaver Mar 29, 2026 +18
Same with so many of the jokes. They're not just funny lines; they absolutely feel like something that would be said at a table. The "is he just going to keep walking in a straight line," line had been said about an NPC doing exactly the same thing in a game I've run.
18
Legomaniac91 Mar 29, 2026 +14
You can practically hear the DM furiously scribbling notes as they homebrew the item on the spot (and it is an official item in D&D now).

LinkMugMan Mar 29, 2026 +62
I think in 10-20 years when the MCU style action-comedy films have long disappeared from the mainstream, people will look back at them all and pick out the best ones to rewatch. Honor Among Thieves is one of them.

7

Watched it on a flight and while I don't have any relationship with D&D I really enjoyed it. It was funny and clever
9
DosCuatro Mar 29, 2026 +10
This movie had the most generic trailer and the most straight to DVD movie poster I've ever seen. But it was "the best Marvel movie of that year"
10
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Mar 29, 2026 +282
The trailer for Drive made it look like a generic action movie that feels fit for straight to DVD release, but the film itself ended up being one of my favorite examples of a movie that makes late night LA feel like a distinct world (or like a character itself)
282
Vesalii Mar 29, 2026 +77
My wife stopped watching Drive about 15 minutes in "because nobody talks" and I was on the edge of my seat. It's a great movie.
77
-Teapot Mar 29, 2026 +25
It’s so calm and quiet, it’s almost soothing. It gives enough room for emotions. And then the elevator scene hits. That calm and quiet makes violence more violent. It’s a nice contrast from the typical quick shot action movies or loud sound horror movies.
25
SecondhandRaincoat Mar 29, 2026 +16
Nobody talks? The first scene starts with talking! I get what she means, I guess. It's less chatty than most movies. She likely wouldn't like Conan the Barbarian either.
16

'Up' must have been the wildest pitch meeting. An old guy floats his house to South America where he meets talking dogs and fights an even older guy. And he's kidnapped a boy as well. Oh, and we'll start it with a 10 minute montage about infertility and death. Pixar: "That sounds perfect for our next kids film."
469
Upbeat_Tension_8077 Mar 29, 2026 +92
I remember watching it in theaters as a kid & it was crazy (and very impressive in retrospect) to see how it had pretty much all of the adults at my showing either crying or struggling not to cry
92
Delanorix Mar 29, 2026 +53
Kids stories used to be like that. Go back and watch old Pixar or Disney movies and you realize they've definitely become more light hearted

The incredibles has suicide, insurance cost conversations, being sued for stopping the suicide, the dad getting into shape and mom can’t keep her hands off him, hostages, children being threatened, concerns of inferiority, death by plane engine, etc.  That movie is great.

137
Time-Sudden_Tree Mar 30, 2026 +25
I was sold on the film when it got to the part where Shaun's routine trip to the convenience store is so boring and repetitive, that he didn't even notice the apocalypse around him until after he got back to his house. Now *that's* some top tier British comedy.
25
Impossible-Welder404 Mar 29, 2026 +386
Pig. I thought it was going to be some sort of John Wick with Nic Cage. It turned out to be an incredibly emotional subversion of the genre. Beautiful movie.

31
VisionQuesting Mar 29, 2026 +28
Truly wonderful film
28
Dr_Identity Mar 29, 2026 +14
Nic Cage was casted perfectly in this movie because the set up has you just waiting for him to get all Nic Cagey and then he just doesn't. But he still brings a remarkable amount of intensity and pathos despite being way more subdued than you'd expect. I feel like he was perfect for both this role and for Mandy but for opposite reasons, like Mandy gives you the Nic Cage you want, but Pig gives you the Nic Cage you didn't know you needed.
14
IWTLEverything Mar 29, 2026 +18
It’s Orpheus and Eurydice. For me it was a great experience to watch the movie, then see Hadestown the musical, then rewatch the movie. If I remember, the restaurant is even called Eurydice.

46
LinkMugMan Mar 29, 2026 +43
The best way I can describe Dredd is that it feels like the logical conclusion to 00s style action movies. The tone, the camera work, the choreography, etc., all feel taken out of the 00s and done really well with just a bit of early 2010s sheen added into the mix.
43
monsterlynn Mar 29, 2026 +35
The 3D is fantastic, too. The slo-mo effect 3D was amazing. Probably one of the best 3D releases of that time period.

One thing you can be sure of is that the movie is successful on its own merits. Because, while I haven't seen the original show, I'm pretty sure the tone was not a comedy. So, being an adaptation of the series minimally affected its success.

32
Tsebsitsecni Mar 29, 2026 +238
The premise of John Wick is that someone kills a man's dog, so he spends the rest of the movie murdering people. It sounds stupid and I just assumed it'd be terrible. But word of mouth was so strong I watched it once. And of course it is basically a Perfect Movie. They take their time setting up the premise, and by the time the dog dies you are 1000% invested in John Wick going John Wick on everyone involved.
238
cibman Mar 29, 2026 +166
The moment when John Leguizamo says, "he stole John Wick's car, sir, and, uh, killed his dog," and the response was "oh," was perfect. It was the sort of reaction you never get in action movies, and it perfectly summarized what was about to happen.

I’m not saying I haven’t appreciated the action choreography of the following 3 movies, but they could’ve left wick as a standalone single story and it would’ve been perfect.
92
Worthyness Mar 29, 2026 +23
the world they created though is quite fascinating. I do love the lore bits they add on even if it gets more convoluted as it goes on
23
WrinklyScroteSack Mar 29, 2026 +18
It does, it’s fun! But that convolution also means they need to keep escalating. By the 4th movie it seems like everyone in the world are assassins in a massive crime syndicate.

That's our first scene with Viggo. We don't know much of anything about him, but if you've seen a movie before you know a powerful mob boss on screen when you see one. For his response to his son being slapped to be essentially "Yeah, that's totally the appropriate response, sorry for wasting your time" you know some shit is going to go down.
30
cibman Mar 29, 2026 +7
I’ve always wondered if he could have done something to prevent what John does from that point on. His relationship with his son is complicated to say the least. Would having John settle things with his son right away have saved everyone?
7
whambulance_man Mar 29, 2026 +8
Yep. He knew that if the dude was willing to give up his son, it was over then and there, he didn't want to be 'back', he wanted to go swimming in Blantons remembering his wife until he killed himself (on purpose or not). No other reason to take it as far as he did.

VelvetAcidSuperstar Mar 29, 2026 +28
Wholeheartedly agree. The first act set up the world so beautifully and made you realize just who exactly John Wick was.

Top Gun maverick. Looked generic and whatever, saw the trailer playing in theatres for what seemed like years. Got dragged to it on opening night. One of my favorite movies in the last decade.
89
Inveramsay Mar 29, 2026 +19
It really had no right to be as engaging as it was. I'm almost verging on it being better than the first but I'm undecided
19
GuiltyEidolon Mar 29, 2026 +6
I think that in a lot of ways, it's better. Maybe even better overall. _But._ It can't exist without the OG. Trying to tell that story without the connection to Top Gun would have just made it a bit trite and trope-y. I think one of the biggest things is that Tom Cruise also has more pull and experience, and he turned the character from kind of 2D into a much more developed, nuanced character.

Mad Max: Fury Road. Saw the trailer in theaters and assumed it was some weird cash grab reboot/spin off made by someone new and thought it looked so unbelievably bad. Then one day years later I was bored and scrolling through movies and decided to put it on out of sheer morbid curiosity. I thought I’d watch it for like 5 minutes and laugh at it and then go do something else. An hour or so later I realized I’d been glued to the screen unable to look away and was like wait a minute, is this the best movie I’ve ever seen in my life?

other_name_taken Mar 29, 2026 +57
You must have lived under a rock for the few years before and after it came out. Its production issues were front page entertainment news for years, and everything written about it when it was finally released was overwhelmingly positive.

suniis Mar 29, 2026 +29
And let's not talk about that Oscar triumph in a MCU flooded blockbuster landscape.
29
roblobly Mar 29, 2026 +15
It had great trailers i dont get this, the rhythm, the music, the great action is all there in the marketing.
15
sightlab Mar 29, 2026 +17
That was my feeling too. And the thing is Fury Road *is* just as stupid as it looks on paper but the details and the craft and dedication that went in to it elevate it so far above what it was in danger of being. The guitar guy on the amp truck makes no logical sense and it is just awesome.

SoulMaekar Mar 29, 2026 +9
I get it. I was not super interested in it. Went to watch age of ultron with friends and we ended up doing a double feature and watched mad max. Had 0 expectations thought the trailer looked kinda meh and my friends were Interested because of road warrior and being fans. Came out of that theater thinking it was probably the best action movie I will ever see.

White House Down - 2013. When this came out it looked like the silly version compared to the Gerard Butler / Morgan Freeman movie, but I actually enjoy it better!

This question comes up a lot and is always about the delta between expectations and delivery. Not a movie, but Ted Lasso has always had the greatest delta for me. Expectations of an overextended SNL skit, delivery of an emotionally-effective series!

w00t4me Mar 29, 2026 +22
I remember when Apple TV launched, they announced all their shows, and Ted Lasso was literally dead last to me of shows I wanted to watch, just because the premise was so lame, and it was based on a Commercial on top of that. The brief for it started with something like "Based on the well-liked NBC commercials for the EPL, it's Ted Lasso!" or something equally as lame. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KeG_i8CWE8

TheDragonReborn726 Mar 29, 2026 +10
Great choice. I remember first hearing about this thinking “wtf they are making a full show about a literal gag from a commercial/skit?” Binged the entire first season on a long flight. Teared up a few times.

olduvai_man Mar 29, 2026 +56
The Social Network. I remember the first time seeing the trailer in theaters, I thought it would be the dumbest film ever made but is an absolute gem.

The newer Jumanji movie. No reason for it to exist. But actually not bad

blankslatejoe Mar 29, 2026 +40
It really was a nice surprise. The interplay between each actor's typecast role and the teen they had to pretend to act like worked much better than it should have. And the playful scripting of video gamisms was fun. I caught it on a plane expecting nothing and had no regrets.

Ghetto_Phenom Mar 29, 2026 +17
I truly found the character interactions to be hilarious. There was a handful of scenes I was laughing pretty hard at. Jack black with Hart and Johnson was a great combo and I was really impressed by KG too. I was so used to her stoic nebula I wasn’t ready for her to be so emotive and funny.

TheDragonReborn726 Mar 29, 2026 +17
Honestly this is a good answer. Movie looked like absolute slop money grab shit and maybe it is but it’s much better than it had any right to be

TomBerwick1984 Mar 29, 2026 +30
Scott Pilgrim vs the World. I thought the humor in the trailer looked like it was trying too hard. Ended up loving it when I saw it. Loved the meme; "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Ruined a Whole Generation of Women". (Cleared up grammar.)

Air- a film about a shoe. Says it all. Except it was actually dramatic and compelling.

It's a testament to the writeing that even though everyone knows Jordan signs with Nike, you still feel the suspense and anticipation as they prepare for the pitch. Great movie.

The Lego Movie and Pirates of the Caribbean have to be up there for me, I would add Barbie to that as well. I also speak highly of The Fall Guy, way better than it had a right to be. I just wish they didn’t tie it to an IP nobody cared about. They could have made the same movie with a different title and only had to deal with online comparisons. Anyone under 40 does not know about The Fall Guy.

> I just wish they didn’t tie it to an IP nobody cared about. Except the people that made the film absolutely cared about the IP.

When I saw the trailer for "Batman Begins" I remember thinking... Another Batman movie? Why? Boy was I wrong....

I can't imagine trying to explain "Everything Everywhere All at Once" to someone and have them think I'm not a moron for liking the movie, let alone convincing them they'll cry at two rocks that just sit there.

Your Name, in a way. The description just made it seem like an anime version of those silly body swap romcoms and it never interested me despite reading recommendations everywhere. Watched it one evening after “Garden Of Words” on a whim, thought “I like this his style, I wonder if he’s done anything else”, looked him up, saw Your Name, finally decided to watch it. It’s now one of my favorite films ever.

The Empty Man has the laziest, most generic horror trailer I've ever seen. The movie rocks

Yeah, The Empty Man is incredible, especially the first 15 minutes.

Spy with Melissa McCarthy. Not that I dislike McCarthy, but wouldn't call myself a fan. Movie looked to be just another comedy poking fun at typical spy movie tropes, which is exactly what it was, but the writing was S-Tier.
21
Walk_Run_Skip Mar 29, 2026 +6
This movie is how I found out Jason Statham could do comedy. McCarthy and Statham killed it every scene they were in together. When he was intensely describing his previous missions to her and she's staring at him like he's deranged I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe.

I remember seeing a trailer for Fight Club and thought that was the dumbest premise for a movie. I don’t know if you’ve seen it but it’s quite good (watch til the end 😜)

Boss Baby. I spent years thinking it was the dumbest shit I had ever seen a commercial for. Then I had kids and had to watch. Jesus christ is that movie excellent.

I'll go the opposite. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. One of the most captivating trailers I've ever seen. I was hyped. Then I watched it.
35
blankslatejoe Mar 29, 2026 +12
It had a good scene. Too bad it was the first one and it was pretty much downhill after.
12
TheDragonReborn726 Mar 29, 2026 +4
Ohhhh the opposite is good too. Maybe I’ll go Black Panther 2 for that. It’s definitely not bad, but the trailer had me thinking it’s going to be one of the best movies I’ll ever see, particularly with the first one being goddamn incredible. It was average to maybe above average.
