What’s a movie you’ve rewatched many times, that isn’t a blockbuster/franchise movie, or an Oscar-nominated/critically acclaimed movie?

Posted by capamericapistons

When it comes to movies people have rewatched over and over, many blockbuster/franchise films come to mind. Think Star Wars, any number of Steven Spielberg’s movies, comic book movies, Tom Cruise’s movies, popular horror movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th, etc etc Or, movies that are award winning and/or critically acclaimed. Movies like pulp fiction, Forrest Gump, interstellar, many of Martin Scorsese’s movies - the list goes on. I’m curious, what is a movie you’ve rewatched several or more times, that does not fall into either of those categories mentioned above? A recent one for me is roofman, that came out last year with Channing Tatum and Kirsten dunst. I don’t know what it is, but the movie is just crafted so well imo. Memorable characters, well executed humor, genuinely tense moments and an overall story that is just so entertaining and enjoyable, at least for me. When I’m looking for something comforting or relaxing to watch, this comes to my mind for some reason lol. I guess there are worse things. It did get positive reviews but it wasn’t critically acclaimed, not many people were suggesting it for an Oscar obviously. What about for you all?

Stardust. Zero idea if it was "critically acclaimed" but pretty sure it was none of the rest.

pfenixa Mar 31, 2026 +36
I think it only had a fair set of well known actors (that was like the comeback year for Michelle Pfieffer who was also in Hairspray that year) and it still didn’t get the acclaim. Makes me sad because it’s so well done! The acting, the dialog, and the score were all on point. It actually falls into the small category of movies I think are better than the book they’re based on! it’s been years since I read it but I didn’t find Gaiman’s book has near the charm that the movie pulled off.

There was a period of time where I watched it once a week every week for nearly 2 months. and every time I washed it I saw something that I hadn't seen before.

The Fifth Element. One of my all-time favourites, so quotable, so much fun and ridiculousness. I get a joy from watching it that is similar in volume to my joy when watching The Princess Bride, but different vibes.
586
sartori_tangier Mar 31, 2026 +139
The Fifth Element is one of those rare movies where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The music, the art design, the retro flying cars, the humor, the costumes, the opera, the brilliant chemistry among all the lead actors... lightning in a bottle. Which is what it has in common with Princess Bride. Magic happened when those movies were made.

The American President. It really hit that rom com sweet spot even with leads who weren’t thought of as rom com material (Michael Douglas and Annette Bening). Plus Michael J. Fox, Richard Dreyfuss, Martin Sheen.

Maaan, I love this movie. I watched it so many times as a kid, I love 90s rom-coms and the snappy dialogue in this one is so memorable. I actually rewatched it just this weekend, I was trying to take a nap so I put something on that was familiar so I could fall asleep easier. Dammit if I didn’t stay awake for the whole thing. ‘My name is Andrew Sheppard, and I *AM* the President.’

AulFella Mar 30, 2026 +110
The Long Kiss Goodnight. I find it just a perfect 80s/90s action movie, the right balance of humour, action, good characters, and an almost but not quite believable plot. Paint Your Wagon, because it's just a fun silly musical with actors you don't expect to see in such. I like westerns, some of my favorite movies are classic Clint Eastwood flicks like Unforgiven, The Outlaw Josie Wales, the dollars trilogy, etc. So seeing him and Lee Marvin in this is just really refreshing somehow and always cheers me up. Clue. I don't if this is cheating the question because I don't know anyone who doesn't like Clue. But I don't know any professional movie critics and quite a few of them somehow didn't like Clue.
110

The nurse came in and removed the catheter. After she left the room I looked at my wife and said "she touched my pepe Steve". It took us a few minutes to stop the giggling before she came back in.

Short Circuit raised me as a child. Parents needed an evening to themselves? Pop in Short Circuit and little me would sit and watch that incredible piece of puppetry 🥰 Recently it’s The Descent. It’s such a well-made movie. There isn’t a wasted shot or line of dialogue. Everything that happens is strictly cause and effect. Every character’s actions are based on motives or characteristics of theirs that have been previously established. There are no gaps that the audience needs to fill in with headcanon. The writer wrote a perfectly tight story that the audience doesn’t have to make any excuses for. Marvelous

I love Layer Cake, but Snatch is special even if it's more ridiculous. Before and since, nothing has ever hit like that one. Snatch is, quite simply, the best English gangster movie ever made. Rocknrolla and Lock Stock also are up there. I would say Layer Cake probably rounds out that Mt Rushmore.

The Man from Earth. I love this little piece of art even though it's totally low budget. I watch it every year at Christmas time.

Fantastic rewatch value. It’s one of those movies I love to show people who have not seen it. “We thought you was a toad!”

Unstoppable, because I just love train movies. Deja Vu, because I love time travel movies. Inside Man, because I love a twisty heist movie. Fallen, because I love a good occult/demon movie. Now, I wonder what all those movies have in common?? 🤭🤭🤭

Dogma. For so long you couldn't watch it anywhere, I got the DVD before they pulled em all, pretty much wore it out. That was my favorite but I'll watch anything Kevin Smith does any time I can.

The 51st State - great little British crime drama anchored by Samuel L Jackson and Robert Carlyle Intermission - the irish Pulp Fiction (or lock, stock) great dark comedy with an all star cast. Cilian Murphy, Colin Farrell, Colm Meany, Kelly Macdonald. Lords of Dogtown - the almost true story of the Santa Monica surfing kids who turned skateboarding into its own thing, not just something to do on bad surf days. A chill watch and an interesting snap-shot of the poor surf communities of California in the 70s. Great performance from Heath Ledger as the surly, drunk but supportive surf shop owner
