What’s a question that sounds easy at first, but gets weirder the more you think about it?

Are you you because you chose to be you or are you you because this is all you know?

If you replace every part of a ship over time, is it still the same ship?

Yeah but that’s the scary part… if everything can change and still be considered the same, then what actually defines something?

If you try to fail and succeed, then which have you done?

What is an atom and what does it look like. We were all taught in school that an atom is one or more electrons orbiting one or more protons and neutrons. But the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanical, which gives the correct result when doing the calculations at a molecular level, is premised on the assertion that an electron is a wave, and not a definite wave (such as an ocean wave) but a wave whose location and speed are probabilities such that the more certain you make one of speed or location, the less certain you make the other. But there are many other interpretations of quantum mechanics (summarized nicely for lay people in “What Is Real?” by Adam Becker) than the Copenhagen interpretation because, although the Copenhagen interpretation works for calculations for small objects, it breaks down when you are working with large objects. In addition, there are those who believe that an atom isn’t made of particles or waves but of vibrating strings which are not four dimensional but have 10 or 11 dimensions. So the more you know about atomic and subatomic particles, the less certain things become and it’s quite possible that the question “what is an atom and what does it look like” can’t be answered by humans.

That’s exactly what makes it weird… the more you try to explain something simple, the more complicated it gets It almost feels like th question stops being “simple” the moment you understand it Maybe simple questions are only simple until you actually think about them.

How now, brown cow?

Wait this is actually breaking my brain right now. Like what is the cow doing that makes it brown and why are we asking how its happening now specifically. Is it a timing thing or are we questioning the method. The more I think about it the less sense any of those words make together and I'm pretty sure I need to lie down

That’s exactly why it’s weird… the question sounds simple but the moment you try to define it, everything breaks 😂

If your memories were completely replaced, but yout body stayed the same… would you still be you?
