What’s a series that’s so amazing you’d actually be jealous of someone starting it for the first time?

Posted by Hexyl68

I’d put The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, etc. on this list. I just finished Mad Men for the first time and wow it moved me. What should I watch next? Old or new! Looking for the next “sink my teeth into it” series.

My husband just bought all seasons on Amazon because they were on sale and thought I’d be mad or something. No idea why because I’m thrilled - we LOVED this show so much and I’m still trying to convince people to watch it.

All 3 of the Military shows are great Band of brother's The pacific Generation kill I would love to see some about Vietnam or Koea to see what happened in the middle of these two seeing how differently the People act/operate in them.

[How To with John Wilson](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/110971-how-to-with-john-wilson) (2020) >In a uniquely hilarious odyssey of self-discovery and cultural observation, documentary filmmaker and self-described "anxious New Yorker" John Wilson covertly and obsessively films the lives of his fellow New Yorkers while attempting to give everyday advice on relatable topics. The awkward contradictions of modern life are eased by Wilson’s candid, unpolished commentary. Building upon Wilson’s previously released "how to" short films, each episode takes wildly unexpected turns but is grounded in John's refreshing honesty.

Dark (Netflix) particularly how the show starts as a simple missing child show to what it ends with is unbelievable.

BigBabyWhale Mar 31, 2026 +5
I keep hearing this. I’ve tried to get through the first ep twice to no avail. Is it really that good?
5
chickeneatfin Mar 31, 2026 +5
it’s one of those shows you have to give it time and few episodes. it’s a slow burn type show cause the creators had the whole story and character arc mapped out from the start. there’s also so many easter eggs and character arcs that are mentioned in dialogue pay off a season or 2 later.

BigBabyWhale Mar 31, 2026 +1
Thanks, I’ll try again.

Hoodbine Mar 31, 2026 +1
Just curious... did you watch a dubbed version, or the original German with subtitles?
1
BigBabyWhale Mar 31, 2026 +1
Dubbed
1
Hoodbine Mar 31, 2026 +3
Yeah the dubbed version is awful I say this as someone with reading comprehension issues so subtitled films/tv can be a struggle to keep up with sometimes... This is one of the best shows I've ever seen and I would very strictly only recommend people watch it if it's the original language version with subtitles.

BigBabyWhale Mar 31, 2026 +1
Nice tip, thanks.

VelvetPressure Mar 31, 2026 +1
Dark is the only show that ever made me want to buy a corkboard and red string. Just remember: subtitles over dub, or the tone gets weird fast.

This is my pick as well. There’s so much to this show and going through it the first time is such a treat.

mad men is such a trip, don't blame you for being moved by it for your next obsession i'd probably go with true detective (just season 1) or if you want something newer, severance will mess with your head in the best way. both have that "can't stop thinking about it" quality where you'll be analyzing every detail also jealous you get to experience the sopranos for the first time if you haven't seen it yet - that show changed everything

HBO’s Rome is only two seasons and the second one got truncated a bit, but still up there for me as far as shows go. Worth checking it out especially if you have an interest in history. Same for Band of Brothers.

The Leftovers. Six Feet Under. Chernobyl.
3
labvlc Mar 31, 2026 +2
I should watch The Leftovers, based on your other two, we have similar taste! I’d kill to watch Siz Feet Under’s final episode for the first time again.
2
spatulachick Mar 31, 2026 +2
The Pitt. I just got into it three weeks ago but it’s the best show I’ve maybe ever seen. My son (19) is now watching it and I’m so jealous that he still has episodes to go. But it’s perpetuated some really good talks between us so I can’t be too upset. Archer - I know it backwards and forwards but I’d love the jokes to be new again just one time. Bob’s Burgers - same as Archer

labvlc Mar 31, 2026 +1
I’d pay good money to be able to forget Six Feet Under, watch it all again, and experience the ending for the first time again. Nothing has ever come even close to hitting me as much as that. I don’t think I spoke a word for the rest of that evening. That being said, the pilot isn’t great. The storyline is good, but the characters are all so deep that they dont feel like themselves in the pilot (probably because they were new to the actors and it took time for them to really get into character).
1
Hexyl68 Mar 31, 2026 +1
I’m three episodes into six feet under. It’s a slow start. I should keep going?
1
labvlc Mar 31, 2026 +1
Absolutely. Once it gets going, it’s amazing. And the very last episode alone is worth watching all of it for. Some characters are a bit over the top/hard to really believe, almost caricatural, but that’s my only negative. If you keep in mind when it came out and what else was done around that time, it’s outstanding tv. The topics it touches, the cinematography, the characters depth… for that time it was 🤯

I'm struggling with Mad Men, I heard such good things but two episodes in and I'm not inclined to go back. Does something notable change or is it just not for me?
1
Hexyl68 Mar 31, 2026 +3
I feel you have to give every series past the first season as it is all setup. I stopped after the D***/Don thing as it didn’t fit. KEEP GOING. The whole show is character/story driven. No “action” or flashy things to keep you engaged. But the character arcs are tremendous. Please try again. I promise it’s worth it.

Lord__Abaddon Mar 31, 2026 +1
Jericho was pretty good, It got cxl'd and rushed the ending but over all was an interesting show. Justified: biggest thing I will say about this is the first season is more episodic and works to introduce alot of characters and show you their personalities. starting at season two you get full season story arcs that starts tying back to previous seasons as well. Deadwood: legit one of the best series ever made Frasier: I've probably watch the entire series 5-6 times now and it's always great King of the hill: seen this numerous times as well, for an animated comedy it hits the perfect tone of silly without going into unrealistic territory. The last Kingdom Narco's Band of Brothers/Generation Kill/The Pacific: these are easily some of the best shows ever made. I usually rewatch them all once a year not terribly long but amazing. Altered Carbon: I would suggest stopping at season 1 as it ties up everything nicely and it got cxl'd after season 2 and ended up leaving on a cliff hanger..... F*** you netflix. edit: almost forgot Patriot on Amazon
