What's a show or movie that started off a little weak, but you stuck with it anyway and it paid off?

Parks and recs, I didn't really care for the first season but glad i stuck with it

Season 1 Leslie was basically just a female Michael Scott clone which was painful to watch but once they let Amy Poehler actually develop the character it became amazing. That whole Ben storyline in later seasons had me actually invested in these fake government people lol

And it’s funny because The Office basically made the same mistake. The show got way better when they stopped trying to be the UK Office and let it become its own thing. Now, the Office may have been forced to do the first season that way under its licensing deal or something from what I’ve heard (I’m not going to google right now to confirm—yall will correct me if that’s wrong), so it’s maybe not entirely on the show runners. But they seemed not have learned that lesson when they went on to make Parks and Rec, and had to learn it again.

skrame Mar 27, 2026 +22
I think your comment has convinced me to give it another shot. I tried watching this series 5-6 years ago, and Leslie just drove me nuts. I knew I couldn’t stand hours of her.
22
kynarethi Mar 27, 2026 +23
If it helps, there's really a night and day difference in her character between S1 and S2, to the point where if this is your second attempt, it may be worth just starting right at the first episode of S2.
23
Admirable-Law7150 Mar 27, 2026 +3
yea, season 2 is miles better than 1 and it just keeps getting better.
3
Shrekdaly Mar 27, 2026 +8
Even the beginning of season 2 isn't great. I usually tell people to start watching around the Halloween episode of season 2
8
burf12345 Mar 27, 2026 +5
IMO the show properly finds its identity when Adam Scott and Rob Lowe become permanent members of the cast.
5
provocative_bear Mar 27, 2026 +20
My answer. In season 1, Parks and Rec didn’t know what it wanted to be. In season 2, it starts to take on its personality and develop the characters to be likeable.
20
AskinggAlesana Mar 27, 2026 +13
It’s pretty much a universal opinion that people should just skip season 1 because it’s trying too hard to copy the Office and you don’t exactly miss much except Bland Mark who leaves, and Andy being unlikable.
13
The_Queen_Bean_ Mar 27, 2026 +6
I say first timers should watch it from season 1. But for rewatching I start at season 2.
6
Lowe-me-you Mar 27, 2026 +4
Yeah, season 1 does feel like it’s finding its footing once it gets past the initial awkwardness, the characters really start to develop and the humor improves a lot.
4
RevolutionaryRule471 Mar 27, 2026 +26
That’s cuz you barely see Ron in season one!
26
heidismiles Mar 27, 2026 +24
And Leslie was less lovable and more of a fun-ruiner.
24
Unhappy-Champion-509 Mar 27, 2026 +8
Yes! He is my favorite lmao
8
BougieBobJr Mar 27, 2026 +2
Stop trying to keep the Swanson all to yourself, there isn’t enough to go around!
2
Ok_Asparagus_1073 Mar 27, 2026 +7
I always start my rewatch with the episode where Ben and Chris show up
7
jamaicanbacon67 Mar 27, 2026 +9
I was listening to Michael Schur on a podcast and he talked about people’s first reactions to Leslie. And he said one of the notes during test screenings was that Leslie was unlikable. So they didn’t actually change her character that much, but they ended up changing characters reaction to her and that changed the audience’s perception of her.

kamize Mar 27, 2026 +4
Once mark brandanaquitz, it’s a spectacular ride. He was such a dull character that brought down the show in season 1. Honestly all the characters found their groove in season 2 and that’s when the show really starts. I mostly tell people to skip season 1, know that andy and anne lived together but had a bad breakup. Which is important to understand the april-ann dynamic in the early seasons.
4
Kramerica5A Mar 27, 2026 +3
Mark was such a boring character
3
Hexxys Mar 27, 2026 +7
Everyone always says this but I thought S1 was great lol 🤷🏽‍♂️
7
figuringthingsout__ Mar 27, 2026 +3
It's my go-to background show. I currently have season 4 on before I go to work.
3
DanLebaTurdFerguson Mar 27, 2026 +113
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Season 1 it kind of stumbled around, but it started firing on all cylinders in S2.
113
BleachedAssArtemis Mar 27, 2026 +22
Hell yeah. Buffy is truly one of the greatest shows of all time. If the apocalypse comes, beep me 💅
22
Olobnion Mar 27, 2026 +7
Yeah, once Spike appears you get four seasons of mostly good episodes.
7
AppointmentNervous55 Mar 27, 2026 +8
Season 1 is a 90s 'monster of the week' cheese-fest. Season 2 finale is when you realize you aren't just watching a teen show—you’re watching a Greek tragedy. It went from 'corny vampire show' to 'the reason I have trust issues' real quick
8
landragoran Mar 27, 2026 +4
Really everything starts getting good with the season finale of S1. They put their foot on the gas with that episode and didn't take it off until they suddenly had to deal with more seasons than they'd planned to
4
Spoonylingus Mar 27, 2026 +3
You're not myth-taken.
3
RelevantDragonflyer Mar 27, 2026 +139
I had to give both Schitt's Creek and Abbott Elementary second tries. But I think a lot of pilots are a bit weak.
139
Krayt88 Mar 27, 2026 +51
Schitt's Creek is tough even on rewatches just because most of the Rose family is so shitty and entitled, and even knowing how good the character development is going to be doesn't make it much easier to stomach at first.
51
lickwhitedogpoo Mar 27, 2026 +6
The opening of S1E2 is classic though.
6
PostMatureBaby Mar 27, 2026 +4
as a massive Arrested Development fan, Schitt's Creek is just "AD Lite" to me
4
Krayt88 Mar 27, 2026 +4
Huh, that's interesting, I've never had the same feeling from Arrested Development. They are also out of touch, entitled rich people, but they were so over the top and cartoony that I never had a hard time getting through it. Maybe Schitt's Creek just feels a little more grounded in a way that is more painful for me to watch?
4
thegeeksshallinherit Mar 27, 2026 +21
Schitt’s Creek is the only show I tell people they have to stick with through the entire first season. Usually I’m not a fan of having to power through media I’m not enjoying, but it’s so so so worth it in this case. The uncomfortableness and awfulness of the characters at the beginning is integral to the growth of the characters and the overall premise of the show. The payoff is definitely worth it in my opinion!
21
MaggieNFredders Mar 27, 2026 +2
Huh. This is interesting. I couldn’t get past the first few episodes. They were just awful imo. Sounds like I need to try again.
2
Gingereej1t Mar 27, 2026 +136
Star Trek: The Next Generation. First season was ropey af, but yeah, it got waaay better
136
willstr1 Mar 27, 2026 +23
Fun fact: the term for the point when a show that started slow got better (ie the opposite of a show "jumping the shark") is actually named after TNG. It is called "growing the beard" because right around when TNG started getting good was when Riker grew out his beard
23
InigoMontoya1985 Mar 27, 2026 +14
One of my favorite moments is when they acknowledge it in the show when Q says, "Riker, you're so stolid. You weren't that way before the beard."
14
suesueheck Mar 27, 2026 +19
Every Star trek series takes a bit to get going. Voyager was pretty meh the first few seasons. DS9 was iffy until Worf came on board. Enterprise got good once the Xindi stuff started going crazy.
19
DuglandJones Mar 27, 2026 +16
I don't know Lower decks was great start to finish
16
Hausgebrauch Mar 27, 2026 +4
Counterpoint: It took me three tries to get through the first season, because it was one of those annoying, hyperactive cartoons "for adults" where every character is the wackiest nutjob who screams every punchline. It just was an exhausting watch. Only after I caught some of the later episodes and actually enjoyed them, I decided to try it again (also fueled by the fact that I was sick in bed and needed a distraction) and yeah, it takes a while until it really settles in and feels like some real h******* Trekkies decided to have light hearted fun with the universe, instead of a bunch of stoner assholes making random jokes in a Star Trek setting, but it's absolutely worth to sit through the uneven first season.
4
_whydah_ Mar 27, 2026 +3
I've watched all of TOS, TNG, and VOY, and I'm now working through DS9. I didn't hit DS9 originally and it's been a little hard to get into, but it's starting to pick up in the 2nd season. Looking forward to Worf coming in as I love Worf.
3
computer_crime Mar 27, 2026 +2
I started Voyager and gave up until I just skipped to season 4. It's great from there right up to the end. Seven of Nine give Janeway a lot more to do, and really helped the show.
2
PaulsRedditUsername Mar 27, 2026 +2
I tried really hard to like the new Starfleet Academy one. It had that similar awkward vibe of the characters not quite getting it right yet. There were a few scenes I thought were really good, but there was a lot of trying too hard. I feel like it's the kind of show you would ignore until season four, then it would get really good.
2
cbru Mar 27, 2026 +6
My wife was just saying how the character development is too constrained with only 10 episodes vs. how many episodes were in DS9 for example.
6
Thee-lorax- Mar 27, 2026 +6
They were using leftover scripts from the original series and really didn’t know what direction to take. I think they really found themselves in season 3 or 4.
6
atreides78723 Mar 27, 2026 +9
I hate to say it, but Gene Roddenberry‘s death was the best thing that happened to ST:NG. Once he was out of the way, they could mix his philosophy with a little bit of action and that made all the difference.
9
ChronoLegion2 Mar 27, 2026 +8
DS9 wouldn’t exist with Gene still around
8
PostMatureBaby Mar 27, 2026 +8
A world without Chief O'Brien is a sad one for sure
8
sqplanetarium Mar 27, 2026 +5
Even by S2 the show was improving, and S2 gave us some top tier episodes like Measure of a Man and Q Who. And it just got better from there.
5
PostMatureBaby Mar 27, 2026 +5
yeah but the first episode Q outfit is hilariously awesome, he's like an intergalactic bishop-pimp
5
Chemblue7X2 Mar 27, 2026 +2
Similar for us, my wife and I persevered through three mediocre seasons on Star Trek Voyager before it finally got good on the same level of TNG and DS9. I’m glad we got there because those last four seasons were great.
2
tomtomvissers Mar 27, 2026 +35
Fringe and Agents of SHIELD both start out as "mystery of the week" type shows but abandon that premise after about 1 season and then shit slaps hard
35
Spatula26 Mar 27, 2026 +6
In shields case they always knew they were going to the hydra plotline. They just had to wait for winter soldier to be released.
6
Beserked2 Mar 27, 2026 +3
I wasn't a big fan of the show but watched it because my family did - but that Hydra reveal was so good. >! Ward !< being Hydra was such a devastating shock
3
toxiamaple Mar 27, 2026 +3
One summer i binged all the marvel movies and shows in order. (Chronological not the order they were made). It was fun to watch Agents in the proper context.

ImportantQuestions10 Mar 27, 2026 +30
Was looking for this. The first 3ish episodes are generic primetime TV feel good schlok. The rest of the show parodies the first couple episodes while still having feels. I'm not sure if that was planned or just a good course correction.
30
handsomewolves Mar 27, 2026 +6
Once you get through the Christmas episode it's all gravy (wwsd). Some are good before that but when they come back from the winter break the show starts to hit its stride.
6
flipper_babies Mar 27, 2026 +13
It gets good pretty quickly, then makes a left turn into postmodernism halfway through season 2. I love it all, but some people prefer earlier show and some the later.
13
jotamon-xiii Mar 27, 2026 +9
It does but the first few episodes of the first season really makes it seem like a generic show. And then it’s just some of the best TV.
9
train153 Mar 27, 2026 +3
Those episodes really did make it seem like a basic sitcom. I remember watching the pilot back in the day and not continuing because it didn't really grab me. I then watched the whole show years later and felt like i was streets behind for not doing so early. 🙃
3
funk_addict Mar 27, 2026 +92
Andor. Lifelong SW fan, but first couple episodes didn’t grab me. Glad I stuck with it though, because it turned out to be the best SW tv show yet.
92
marakalastic Mar 27, 2026 +32
The prison episode is probably one of the most memorable episodes of any show I've watched in the last few years.
32
leaf_blowr Mar 27, 2026 +3
I can’t swim
3
quint1986 Mar 27, 2026 +7
I’m with you! The first couple episodes were good but after that it was gripping. I struggled to turn it off. Best Star Wars thing period for me.
7
cparksrun Mar 27, 2026 +10
Best Star Wars Anything yet, in my opinion. And I consider myself a SW fan.
10
Totally-NotAMurderer Mar 27, 2026 +9
"This is boring. Why did they even make this? No one asked for this and no one cares about this character....wait this is ok..wait this is good...wait this is great...wait this is one of the best shows ive ever seen"
9
Rogan_Lome Mar 27, 2026 +3
Same! I struggled to get through the first three episodes, but it was great after that
3
treitter Mar 27, 2026 +2
They're great episodes but it's hard to fully appreciate them until you've seen the whole series at least once
2
usuyukisou Mar 27, 2026 +2
*Andor* got me in the first episode with Hyne's (Syril's boss) speech, but the flashbacks to Kenari were definitely my least favourite part of the first series, although I did understand why they made that choice by the end of the arc. EDIT: I did drag my feet on tuning in to begin with, though
2
bebeselkie Mar 27, 2026 +46
BoJack Horseman.  It's starts as just a regular, goofy show in the first few episodes, but then turns into a masterpiece.
46
someriver Mar 27, 2026 +4
Agreed. It started as another adult animation with weird art and ended up as a one of the darkest, deepest fiction series I’ve come across.
4
Sabor117 Mar 27, 2026 +2
My go-to answer for this kind of question. I mean, I'd even say that it really doesn't kick off properly until season 2. Season 1 felt very much like it was struggling to find it's identity.
2
burf12345 Mar 27, 2026 +4
Can't say I agree with this assessment, imo the show finds its footing in the episode when Bojack meets with Herb. Herb telling him to his face that he doesn't forgive him and that he'd have to live the rest of his life knowing of the shitty thing he did hits like a freight train.
4
go_wolves77 Mar 27, 2026 +93
The Leftovers. The first season was a fine, kinda interesting prestige TV show. Then the second season changed location, completely shifted in tone and turned into an excellent watch for the rest of the series. Maybe the best finale or at least final scene in television history
93
too_muchTV Mar 27, 2026 +14
I enjoyed the first season but the opening scene of the first episode in season two completely hooked me. I actually doubled checked the channel guide to make sure I was watching the right show.
14
GCDFVU Mar 27, 2026 +6
I'm one of the minority that prefers the first season, but that show is so amazing overall! Such a great depiction of loss and grief, and how people handle it. Plus Carrie C***! That monologue is something else
6
perldawg Mar 27, 2026 +2
i also felt the show didn’t live up to the potential it came out of the 1st season with. i thought they leaned a bit too far into the mystical end of the spectrum and could have had more impact just focusing on the social disruption and emotional coping aspects of the storyline
2
mitchwacky Mar 27, 2026 +2
Came here to say Leftovers. It was...interesting enough in the first season and then got increasingly better. My favorite scene is probably the opening five minutes of season three. Such a relief to see (a particular character) get taken off the board.
2
Additional_You5104 Mar 27, 2026 +134
Better Call Saul for sure, I wouldn't say it started off weak but it went from "Okay, this is interesting" to "Holy shit this is easily the same tier as Breaking Bad" pretty quickly.
134
bigEZmike Mar 27, 2026 +31
I restarted this show like 3 times before I got into it. The first season is just kinda bland for me. But my friend swore it was up there with Breaking Bad, which I absolutely loved, so I stuck it out and I'm glad I did.
31
pladhoc Mar 27, 2026 +3
I hope Pluribus has the same trajectory. So was just meh.
3
perldawg Mar 27, 2026 +11
better than BB, imho
11
sidc42 Mar 27, 2026 +14
You spend the entire show in anticipation of when Jimmy finally transitions over to the BB fan favorite Saul Goodman and then when it happens it's just such a gut punch.
14
bigEZmike Mar 27, 2026 +9
He was such a good lawyer. They really made me feel bad for him.
9
Holiday_Cat_7284 Mar 27, 2026 +4
It's a slow burn compared to BB but better in the long run I think
4
LuckyFielder36 Mar 27, 2026 +8
I thought the same thing. That slow burn in Better Call Saul totally paid off. The character depth and storytelling just skyrocketed. By the end, I was more stressed for Jimmy than I ever was for Walter White.
8
mojo276 Mar 27, 2026 +2
I tell everyone that BCS starts slower/worse than breaking bad, but finishes WAY better. It’s around season 3 when it really picks up, and when it does it’s so so good.
2
doctor-rumack Mar 27, 2026 +3
My son drives me crazy, because he loved BB and he refuses to watch BCS based on the first two episodes. I keep telling him to give it more patience, because it won't be long before he'll shut himself in his room and watch the show 10 hours at a time.
3
Additional_You5104 Mar 28, 2026 +2
Season 3 picks the hell up and then the moment Lalo gets thrown into the mix in season 4- Swear you get absolutely glued to the show and *have* to see what happens next.
2
DaytimeLanternQQ Mar 27, 2026 +2
I really liked it up until the last season. I just lost interest and watched the important bits. First few seasons hooked me, though!
2
Additional_You5104 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I can see that- For me it was just weird momentum wise because I binged every season before COVID and then the last season came out and it had been years since I watched the show so I kinda forgot what was going on lol. Still a solid season though!
2
Elegant_Accident_124 Mar 27, 2026 +67
The Office - you just have to survive season 1
67
slinkocat Mar 27, 2026 +12
It's certainly rough around the edges, but it has Diversity Day and Basketball. Those are great episodes.
12
-KFBR392 Mar 27, 2026 +8
People don’t like season 1 of the Office??
8
sumunsolicitedadvice Mar 27, 2026 +10
It was more of a clone of the UK version. Most Americans like the first season the least. Slightly different style of humor.
10
Traditional_Entry183 Mar 27, 2026 +7
I did not. I tried to like it. Watched the whole first season. Just wasn't for me.
7
tacocollector2 Mar 27, 2026 +3
I watched the first 3 seasons. I don’t hate it. But I don’t need to see more of it.
3
eyehatecheese Mar 27, 2026 +4
season 1 was one of the best
4
sumunsolicitedadvice Mar 27, 2026 +5
You should watch the UK version that it’s based off, then. The first season of the American version is much more of a clone of the original. If that was your favorite season, you should watch the original. Heck, you should watch a lot more British comedies, if you don’t already.
5
musicismath Mar 27, 2026 +4
The UK Office was incredible. Ok fine, I'll go back and watch it all again.
4
SyriusLee Mar 27, 2026 +69
The Expanse - on prime. The first 3-4 episode was meh… one of my coworkers recommended it multiple time. I tried it 3 times in two years, but I was not interested despite I’m a sci-fi guy. Man.. I happy I continued to watch finally last year. In my opinion it’s one of the best sci-fi show ever! ( battlestar galactica, andor is the same level for me) It has everything what I could ask for.
69
AYASOFAYA Mar 27, 2026 +7
The first trailer that dropped once Amazon took it over from Syfy….I had never been more excited for a season of television ever in my life.
7
Tacoshortage Mar 27, 2026 +4
Thanks for this point. I've tried it twice and dragged my wife through it both times. She even forgot she watched the first 2 episodes a couple of years ago it was so unremarkable. I'm giving it another go this week just to power through.
4
1boss_hog1 Mar 27, 2026 +6

Beat me to it, beltalowda. Same deal here, just about gave up right before CQB.
3
VocationFumes Mar 27, 2026 +2
yea agreed, I was really pushing myself to watch this show in the beginning but by the later seasons I was so fuckin hooked to that shit
2
Urban_Polar_Bear Mar 27, 2026 +2
I got someone watching it and their first thoughts were that there was too much going on and too many characters being introduced in quick succession. I told them to try and remember the faces for now and keep going until the end of the first season and it’ll all make sense. They were hooked until the end. I can see why they needed to do so much at once, but it did make it harder to get into. I tried watching it when it first came out on Sy-Fi and it was a struggle with one episode a week. Watching them one after another made it a lot easier.
2
sqplanetarium Mar 27, 2026 +2
It’s really enjoyable to come back to the first few episodes after you’ve watched the whole show. S1 really throws you in the deep end of the pool with way too much new stuff to process, once you understand what it’s all about it’s a lot more fun.
2
crapshooter_on_swct Mar 27, 2026 +2
Good to know Im in the struggle bus with the first 2 episodes. Also love sci-fi type shows/movies
2
Cupelix14 Mar 27, 2026 +2
Go a just a *little* more and see what you think after CQB.
2
lillweez99 Mar 27, 2026 +25
Ash vs evil dead. I still wish we got that big bang future ending, Sam Raimi one hell of a writer and Bruce Campbell as one hell of a actor i want that showdown. Built up to that tease only to end killed me inside.

DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Everyone who watched it has their own preferences about the drama/comedy ratio, but I thought the 100% comedy seasons were the best ones. To each their own.
23
HappyHev Mar 27, 2026 +6
Yes once they dropped the chicken people and got better villains if was hilarious. They regularly took the piss out of the first season too. I don't think I'd stick with it these days, nearly didn't back then, would have missed out.
6
ChronoLegion2 Mar 27, 2026 +2
Yeah, Savage was a major threat when he was first introduced but became far less impressive in LoT
2
DisasterOk9684 Mar 27, 2026 +40
The Wire. Like it certainly wasn't weak even to begin with, but I also did not expect it to get better and better until the heights of season 4. That's my single favourite season of television from any show, by a lot.
40
New2thegame Mar 27, 2026 +10
Season 1 might have been my favorite season. I loved them in the projects more than the shipyard.
10
Maxwelljames Mar 27, 2026 +2
Was looking for this. It’s my favorite show but I’ve always felt it was hard to get into.
2
HollowPrynce Mar 28, 2026 +2
The Wire is the greatest TV show I've ever watched but it is such a slow burn, especially on a first viewing. Any time I recommend it to people I always caveat it with that otherwise I know they're just going to give up during season two, which is totally understandable, because while I really liked the first season the tonal shift between seasons one and two was jarring. They feel like different shows at times and I definitely struggled to get through it. Perseverance however is rewarded like none other with this show Season three is phenomenal but season four is, as you said, the greatest season of TV I have ever seen. It's the only season of a show I would rate 11/10. It has the most accomplished blend of drama, comedy and tragedy while remaining true to itself. As far as I'm concerned it's the greatest accomplishment in TV history. Season five has flaws but is still great, especially as it redeems itself with a near-perfect ending For anyone who is considering watching it, all I can say is stick with it. It's a show that respects your intellect and demands your attention because every detail matters. There is very little exposition and it can be difficult to follow the threads at the start, but after a while you develop an almost preternatural sense of what's going on. It doesn't hand-hold you through the differences in language and culture presented in each season, but it feels vastly richer because of it. You feel like you're watching real people in a real city that lives and breathes its story I'm going to stop here because I could wax lyrical about The Wire all day. Give it a chance, use subtitles if you have to because it's important to know what is being said. If you get to the end I can guarantee you'll be glad you did "A life, Jimmy, you know what that is? It’s the shit that happens while you wait for moments that never come"

i think the first episodes are really solid tbh, it just takes like… 6ish episodes to lock in with the characters. but if you go back for a rewatch once you know them, the whole first season is so good.

Agents of Shield. At first I just watched it out of obligation of keeping up with Marvel. It was my designated “meal time” show, meaning the show I put on when eating that I’m okay half paying attention to. Without giving spoilers, there’s a pretty big shift that happens in the story about 2/3rds into the first season that made the show and its characters way more interesting and I noticed I was paying way more attention to it during my meals lol. Once the show found its groove, became one of my favorite Marvel shows.

Babylon 5. Wouldn't say it started really weak, the acting just seemed really wooden and cringy. Replacing the captain and the other actors finding their roles turned it into a very memorable series for me.

It went from interesting, but a little cringy to one of the top sci-fi shows of all time. It was the best written, for sure.

It's funny because this was definitely one of my 'completely hooked from the pilot' shows for me.  The effects are super dated but the character work blew me away with some of the directions it took.  I definitely agree that some of the characters took a bit to come into their own though.  Garibaldi was insufferable for about ninety percent of it, and I think they hadn't quiet figured out what note they wanted to hit with Delenn yet, but overall I was hooked. That said, we started with the TV pilot, not the original 'movie' pilot before they replaced half the cast.  I didn't even know that existed until we were halfway into the first season.  If we'd started with the movie, I might have had a tougher time - the cast *really* wasn't gelling in that one, I get why they made some changes.

Boxleitner really shines as Sheridan. Too bad Crusade never got a chance to follow the same pattern. I actually liked some of the characters

Thee-lorax- Mar 27, 2026 +6
The original actor was having health problems and had to quit. Such a great example of 90’s syndication. I used to love that show. I still do but I used to too.

Rude-Flamingo5420 Mar 27, 2026 +2
Ohhh the entire story arc is made of magestic storytelling!!  Season 1 is cringe, but the series as a full is...wow

Blake’s 7. The first episode is…not good. But I love the series.

I was a little shaky on Ozark. I shouldn't have been. The whole cast is fantastic but Laura Linney is bonkers good.

Unpopular maybe? but breaking bad. The 1st 2 seasons were sucha burn that i had to stop watching for a few yrs. then when the s5 hype was on and everyone was talking about it in the office, i started again, and oh it was beautiful..

On Netfix. The Closer. First episode it seems far too awkwardly put together, stinted acting, predictable scripting. Then, it leaped over all that and within another episode or two it all came together and continued to do so til the end.

Jaden661 Mar 27, 2026 +3
Don't sleep on Major Crimes, the sequel to The Closer. Genius plot lines and fantastic acting. They were able to make Captain Rayder, hated by everyone in The Closer into a likeable character by keeping Rusty in the mix. I ended up liking it more than The Closer and I love The Closer.

Doom patrol. Every episode I would mouth or yell "wtf?"

Holiday_Cat_7284 Mar 27, 2026 +5
The Expanse. It's a dark, complicated, slightly confusing first few episodes, and some of the better characters aren't in it yet. Even if you've read the books, it takes some getting into. And then it turns into one of the best series ever written.

Slow Horses. I didn't give the first season the respect it deserved. After S2 I perked up and it became extremely engaging. Brilliant show.

The Clone Wars and Rebels. First seasons of both were meh, the final seasons of both are the best Star Wars ever made.
4
Early-Cook7166 Mar 27, 2026 +13
Schitt’s Creek for me those first few episodes had me side-eyeing it, but sticking it out turned it into one of the most heartwarming, laugh-out-loud shows ever.

On my first watch, The Magicians.. Though, I don't think it start weak now that I've watched the series a few more times.

PogoTK Mar 27, 2026 +2
Vice Principas. Two seasons, and the quality goes up at the end on the 1st in my opinion. Likethe quality is always great it’s just you have to suffer through the characters faults to get the growth and payoff.
2
Coolbluegatoradeyumm Mar 27, 2026 +2
Black Sails: starts off a little slow, plays up the sex a lot early, and really doesn’t kick off into about the ending of S1. Only 8 eps. Then it starts to really rip. If you like Pirates or adventure dramas it’s maybe for you.
2
BosskHogg Mar 27, 2026 +2
Ted Lasso. Found it unfunny and insufferable for the first two or three episodes, and then it just clicked But the last episode brought it back full circle

Babylon 5, first season is pretty rough and hokey but when the story starts focusing on the war it gets crazy good and eerily prophetic.

Severence. First couple of episodes made no sense as they made their way through building the world and characters. Once they got that part out of the way, it picked up and is a hell of a ride.

Picard. I didn't like the constant seriousness and the story wasn't grabbing me at first. Glad I stuck with it. Season 1 was good, season 2 was...decent, but season 3 was one of the best things I've watched on TV. If you don't mind, there is a video game that fits this for me. World of Final Fantasy. The start of that game is so damn slow. Took me like 3 tries to get past the slow part, but then it hooked me. One of the best games I've played, but that start is so bloody bad.

First season of Buffy isn’t the strongest by any stretch of the imagination but it was exactly my speed when i watched it for the first time. The back couple of seasons also have their fair share of problems. As do the college seasons. It is my favorite show of all time.

Fleabag. First season was "meh" at best. Second season is absolute pure genius. I recommend folks to just skip the first season entirely and start with the 2nd. You'll pick up everything you missed along the way
2
JoBear2484 Mar 27, 2026 +2
I'm not going to downvote you cuz we should all talk about Fleabag but really? The first season is "meh"? Is it because it's more serious than the 2nd? I think you're doing people a huge disservice if you advise them to skip it!

Invincible. The first episode seemed like a generic, run of the mill, hero origin story. But the last few minutes…hooked me.

EsquilaxM Mar 27, 2026 +2
there's quite a lot of these. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has a mostly weak first season, with the exception of two episodes. second is much better and by the third I realised it was a brilliant series. I think first season of Star Trek:Lower Decks is was underwhelmed until the last 4 episodes. its a really great show after that. Gungrave has an ATROCIOUS first episode thats needed for the framing device and tension. Then the next \~15 episodes are some really really great crime and brotherhood drama. Community starts weak, then gets really really good when they let their characters be flanderised and the show becomes meta and self referential. I could go on, there's a lot... the entire first episode of Gamers! is a bait-and-switch, hiding what a funny comedy of errors youre heading into.
2
AaronZOOM Mar 27, 2026 +2
So glad to see She-Ra mentioned here. Such a great and underrated series, which holds its own among greats like Avatar the Last Airbender.
2
sturgill_homme Mar 27, 2026 +2
Most recently, Tires. The first season was kinda meh, with a few funny moments here and there, but the second season was even funnier with better, more cohesive storylines and much improved character depth.

I think Paterson starts off awkwardly, and the point is to establish a mundane and mediocre life. The movie is set up with a daily routine through a week, and Monday through Thursday are repetitive, and it gives you the impression that he has a manic depressive wife who wastes his very little money on follies. And then friday is basically a really shitty day, setting up for more shit to come. The wheels are going to fall off on his life. But then Saturday is filmed completely differently and more vibrantly than the other days and all the worrisome and scattered shit his wife has been doing over the week clicks into place. She has redecorated the entire house with hand made decorations beautifully, baked an enormous amount of cupcakes for her successful business at a farmers market, and learned to play a song on guitar for Paterson. Her behavior over the week is reframed as exhaustion from executing her artistic vision, not just her stumbling through scattered and incomplete interests. It’s not really an amazing movie, and I don’t think it’s for everyone. But the scene where he walks into the kitchen on Saturday is stunning in contrast. It’s basically distillation of how a perfectly calm weekend feels when you feel drained from your work week. The whole movie imo is in service of that scene, and it is very memorable.
