What’s a show that people only started to get interested in it until after it got cancelled?

As someone who wrote an actual letter to NBC asking them to finish airing it and to do so in order --- I agree.  I did the same for My So-Called Life.  They both did okay for themselves in the long run. But still.

subvocalize_it Apr 13, 2026 +4
They were going to air it out of order?
4
Thor_pool Apr 13, 2026 +7
It wasn't uncommon for shows that were going to be cancelled to either stop airing before all of the episodes were broadcast, or for it to move to a different time slow and air out in production order as opposed to intended episodic order
7
Fullwake Apr 14, 2026 +1
It was off the air before I even knew about it - but my Da was a big fan and showed it to me in my teens. I still consider it one of the most egregious cancellations of all time.

Redhawk911 Apr 13, 2026 +123
Better Off Ted. Got cancelled and then people got their eyes up for that great show when it had a run on Netflix. I was one of them

Kahzgul Apr 13, 2026 +25
The show was doomed from the start putting a comedy on after Lost was the dumbest move of all time. That said, the thing that got me into better off Ted was a YouTube clip of outtakes. It was so funny I decided to watch the show. F*** that show was so FUNNY. But there’s also no way I’d have been in the right headspace to watch it after Lost, even if I’d wanted to.

Aggressive_Phase_236 Apr 13, 2026 +16
the motion sensors malfunctioning is the most hilarious thing i have ever seen. the seed of that bit alone was genius, but it kept escalating and getting more insane, but the logic behind it made perfect sense

Cardchucker Apr 13, 2026 +11
“It gets dark whenever you leave the room,” “Oh… how can I stay mad at you when you say things like that.”
11
Spiritual-Estate2848 Apr 15, 2026 +1
“SENSE ME!” Also, the commercial that is clearly spoofing the BP oil spill with the phrase “We’re sorry….you’re welcome” pops into my head at least once a month.

irapidcrackpot Apr 13, 2026 +3
If you enjoyed that you might like Andy Richter controls the universe. Some of the cast started on that show. Better off Ted was genius though. The Veridian dynamics ads still get me today.

From what I've heard, The Wire didn't truly hit peak popularity until after its original broadcast had concluded.
154
BIGD0G29585 Apr 13, 2026 +52
This is a good one. The producers had to fight for every season and the final season was shortened.
52
Traditional_Bug_2046 Apr 13, 2026 +38
The Wire is just about perfect television as possible but I do wish we got a full 13 episodes for all the seasons. The last one needed just a tiny bit of room to breathe with the serial killer and newsroom stuff.
38
SJBreed Apr 13, 2026 +5
I think The Wire was way more of a DVD hit than a TV hit
5
IphoneMiniUser Apr 13, 2026 +56
Star Trek is probably the most well known.
56
dancepartyusofa Apr 13, 2026 +10
In this age of legacy sequels and movies that require Disney+ series as homework, it’s hard to explain how unique Star Trek was in the 80s and 90s. A cancelled tv show that powered a blockbuster film franchise after a decade off the air. Generating four spin-offs… that only started 20 years after the first show.

FX114 Apr 13, 2026 +33
I wonder how many others found it through the movie.
33
Hosni__Mubarak Apr 13, 2026 +38
I watched the movie first, and the show second. Firefly was borderline impossible to watch when it first came out, schedule wise.
38
SodaSeven1213 Apr 13, 2026 +6
Yeah I was amped by the promos then never got to watch an episode live
6
beemojee Apr 13, 2026 +3
Well the episodes were originally shown out of order so probably better you missed that experience.
3
Squiddlywinks Apr 13, 2026 +3
Yep, it was early p2p for me. Could never watch it when it aired, but I downloaded it on kazaa and watched it every week.
3
TheKimja Apr 13, 2026 +7
I saw the movie first and I was surprised that I never heard of the show because I watched tv a lot at the time and it was so up my alley
7
FX114 Apr 13, 2026 +3
Somebody told me it was from a show called Firefly, and I said "No, that was a movie with Kevin Costner" 🤦🏻‍♀️
3
TheKimja Apr 13, 2026 +3
😂 Dragonfly was good too
3
kinisonkhan Apr 13, 2026 +1
Not enough, it did poorly in the box office. More people saw "Predators" than "Serenity". Even if Fox didn't air the episodes out of order, it still would have been canceled due to poor ratings.
1
reddit_seaczar Apr 13, 2026 +7
This was such a good space cowboy show.
7
yepgeddon Apr 13, 2026 +5
The obvious answer I feel. Hopefully this animated thing turns out alright.
5
Zerodyne_Sin Apr 13, 2026 +9
I was there when it was airing and it was *unwatchable*. That is, I can't watch it on a consistent time s*** because it hopped around a lot and wasn't shown in order. The annoying thing was it wasn't even Fox, it was a Canadian channel (Global) that was showing it around the same time though a contract but they just mirrored the Fox broadcast. Iirc, I kept watching the train heist and Simon kidnapping one on a loop before I just gave up. It was maddening.
9
zendetta Apr 13, 2026 +9
Not an accident. The Fox president who greenlit it was fired, the one who followed wanted to kill it to make room for their own shows.
9
joseph4th Apr 13, 2026 +14
That’s where it really shows how much fox messed that up. That show was exactly in my real house. I was living by myself in San Diego when it was airing. I was actively watching broadcast TV, including Buffy and Angel and online 90% of the time I was awake. I never even heard about the show until it started taking off on DVD. Edit: not fixing the voice to text error since somebody commented on it. But yes, I know it’s supposed to be wheelhouse.

That was in fact, a voice to text her. And THAT is also a voice to text error.
2
Beetin Apr 13, 2026 +3
I remember it made no f****** sense when it aired (they switched around the order of episodes) I kinda liked the episodes but couldn't follow anything and fell off it, thought "weird show". It already felt like you were watching reruns when it was airing.  Went back a decade later and watched it with a new partner. My goodness did they do that show dirty.
3
Omnitographer Apr 13, 2026 +8
This was one for me, I was more into Star Trek and Stargate at the time and this flew under my radar. I discovered it after renting Serenity from Netflix, not realizing what it was, so I saw that end of everything before ever watching the show, but it's a testament to the writing that I still understood enough of what was happening to enjoy the movie and then watch the show when I found out it existed.
8
Desertbro Apr 13, 2026 +7
I love sci-fi, but purposely did not watch ***Firefly*** in protest to Fox cancelling ***Dark Angel*** after the season 2 cliffhanger of all-out-war between humans and mutants. Perhaps I was not the only person who did this...? I don't even know when I found out it was cancelled, because I avoided all news about it. I think I saw one or two episodes before the movie came out - not sure - don't know when it was re-aired anywhere. I saw ***Serenity*** later on a Blockbuster rental.
7
iamcharity Apr 13, 2026 +3
When Firefly came out, it was on Fox and Buffy had moved to UPN. They were both aired at the same time in my region (St Louis). I wanted to see Firefly but I wasn’t going to miss an episode of Buffy! I discovered Firefly when it became available on Netflix.
3
TheKimja Apr 13, 2026 +2
You know, that’s probably why I didn’t even know about it. I was die hard Buffy from it’s first episode
2
Wendorfian Apr 13, 2026 +1
I remember buying the DVD set at walmart on sale. Loved the first season so much that I immediately looked online to see where I could get season 2 and had my heart feel like it was falling out of my chest.
1
Fightthemonster1 Apr 13, 2026 +1
I’m real late to the game. I just finished watching the show and movie last week. I need more!!! I only started watching bc I saw the hype about them bringing it back in animated format.
1
mr_ji Apr 14, 2026 +1
I watched Serenity in the dollar theater on a whim knowing nothing of the show. It was a fun movie and I didn't get too heartbroken over Wash or Book until I went back and watched the show years later.
1
keyboy267 Apr 13, 2026 +158
Family Guy. The initial run lasted three seasons on Fox before it was cancelled. The popularity of the DVD box set essentially brought it back from the dead.

Can’t leave out adult swim’s hand in that
64
reynoldsJaspertariam Apr 13, 2026 +27
Yea I’m pretty sure the adult swim reruns are what caused the spike in dvd sales
27
TheTrub Apr 13, 2026 +1
There was also a Streisand effect in cancelling it. Allegedly, it was taken off the air after an episode where Stewie and Brian knocked the pope off his balcony and showed his bare ass in St. Peter’s square.
1
BroughtBagLunchSmart Apr 13, 2026 +16
Waking up on your friend's dirty old couch hungover as hell trying to find the remote because the TV is is playing the family guy DVD menu and it is the same 4 phrases being played over and over again.

I actually diched it after season 1, then rewatched it when I heard all the fan praise for the final season.
8
shazwazzle Apr 13, 2026 +4
I also ditched it after season 1. Not that I disliked it. It just got lost in the shuffle of my backlog. How did rewatching work out? Do I need to reinvest in it?
4
beeclam Apr 13, 2026 +8
One of the best tv dramas ever made imo. I know that sounds hyperbolic, but I really mean it. It hits its stride from season 2
8
StacheBandicoot Apr 13, 2026 +7
I didn’t care for the show much at first and also stopped watching it. In my top 5 dramas now.
7
greenbud420 Apr 13, 2026 +2
I think I started with season 2 which felt a bit like a soft-reboot, so I'd just start there. There's just a little carryover that's covered in the first ep. You'll probably appreciate S01 more after finishing the show.
2
LucrativeLurker Apr 13, 2026 +67
Black Mirror. The original episodes are still some of the best, but it wasn’t on a lot of people’s radars before it [left Channel 4 for Netflix.](https://www.nme.com/news/tv/charlie-brooker-says-black-mirror-was-effectively-cancelled-by-channel-4-3448994)

The fact that The National Anthem was the first episode is wild
45
Cosmonate Apr 13, 2026 +3
Man it's hard to believe it's even the same show since it hit netflix. In my opinion calling them the same show is like calling the UK office and US office the same show.
3
Harry__Gateau Apr 13, 2026 +23
It was pretty popular in the UK, as Charlie Brooker already had a decent following from his tv programmes and newspaper column.
23
bobeddy Apr 13, 2026 +16
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. I remember watching it as it aired on Channel 4 in 2004 and it had an absolute death s*** in the schedule airing at like 11pm on a Thursday night. Beyond my friends that I shared the DVD with, no-one I encountered had ever heard of it and it was like that really up until semi-recently. There's a lot more awareness and appreciation for it now, which, if I had to guess, I'd imagine is down to people watching What We Do In The Shadows and IT Crowd that wanted to see more of Matt Berry.
16
VariousVarieties Apr 13, 2026 +3
I only happened to catch one episode on its original Channel 4 broadcast (the Scotch Mist episode). Same with The Armando Iannucci Shows a few years earlier - I only caught one episode's broadcast, and didn't see the rest until it was out on DVD.

Leverage. It got it's best ratings just after cancellation. TNT was a bad fit for the show. As soon as it got into syndication it found it's audience.
30
JeSuisOmbre Apr 13, 2026 +10
I've been enjoying the leverage reboot. Just heard it was canceled after the 3rd season. Getting a reboot with 3 seasons is already a fever dream
10
oscarbilde Apr 13, 2026 +5
The fact that the creator put every episode of both regular Leverage and the sequel (as well as all of his other shows, and the Librarian movies) free on Youtube is such a gift.

You. It originally aired on lifetime, but they canceled it and sold it to Netflix. When the ratings on Netflix went bonkers, they renewed it for a second season and then it ran for five total, I think.
21

31
owlandphoenix Apr 13, 2026 +15
Between this show and dead boys detective agency, I refuse to watch a Netflix show until I know it either has an ending in the first season that wraps everything up or a second season starts airing.
15
morisian Apr 13, 2026 +5
Dead boy detectives also suffered from being associated with Neil Gaiman at the time of his fall from grace

1
blankedboy Apr 13, 2026 +2
**1899** is the one that did it for me. **Dark** is literally one of the best TV shows ever, so I was super stoked for this. Binged the 1st season, which ends on a huge revelation…Netflix cancel it almost immediately. Then they did *exactly* the same thing with **Archive 81** *and* **The Midnight Club** in the same year!?! Since then? F*** Netflix. I’ll watch a show if it’s “complete” or not at all now rather than waste my time over and over again.
2
monsto Apr 13, 2026 +2
You would love travelers on Netflix. Not necessarily tight, but a good four seasons that ends on a great note.

I thought I was over this now I'm pissed off again. Such an original spin on the subject matter and very well made. It had already been canceled by the time we watched the first season, then I started looking for when S2 would be out and saw it was canceled months earlier. F*** you Netflix. Such a refreshing show in this age of TV shows.

Still find it so heartbreaking it ended up at Amazon with minimal marketing or buzz. That was a show ripe for a network like HBO or FX that could actually back how unusual it can be at times. Watching DTF St Louis (also from Steven Conrad) has only reminded me of that.
6
NoQuartersGiven Apr 13, 2026 +3
This for sure! I just wanted the storyline finished and to see J Lakeman maybe be happy for once in his life by the end. Still blows my mind how Prime fumbled the marketing of the show so badly. You could actually have an entire college course on it about how to f*** up marketing one of maybe a top 10 show of all time. Ugh Dammit, now I'm pissed about it again. I guess I'll restart S1 for the 6th time.
3

This is the second time I’ve seen this show mentioned today. I’ll watch it next.
3
Mountain_Wafer_9340 Apr 13, 2026 +2
Such a great show - sort of takes it's time to get anywhere, bit of a circular plot kind of the vibe, but it's just amazing spending time with the characters - Kurtwood Smith was absolutely spectacular in it, for example.

23

The Expanse is the greatest show with no casual viewership. Only SciFi fans know it exists
15
MSBeatles Apr 13, 2026 +3
I watched the first 3 seasons and a bit of the fourth one, and I have a very weird opinion on the show. I don't know if I'm the only one, but on one hand I really liked it and found most of the plots quite intriguing and interesting, but on the other watching it felt like a f****** chore. Like I was at work thinking "I really wanna know what happens to X or Y" and I'd get home and I had to force myself to watch it because I got so so so bored while actually watching it.

Futurama? I feel like it got a lot more popular as reruns on other networks. Fox never treated it with dignity when it was first airing, sliding it into an early evening Sunday night time s*** that was more often than not taken over by a late running sports game. They'd join the already running futurama episode half way through its 30 minute s*** after the football game finally ended and no one would know what was going on. That was for brand new first ever airing episodes. I was always furious. I think Family Guy got the same treatment. Fox always treated its comedy animation with disdain.
13
Monotonegent Apr 13, 2026 +1
Oh yeah, 100%. Family Guy got the benefit of an incredibly loud letter writing campaign to come back for a lifespan far longer than anyone anticipated.  I'll always defend the run Futurama would end up having on Comedy Central. A lot of people didn't like it but they gave it another nice ending (until Hulu decided it was time for some)
1
Fullwake Apr 14, 2026 +1
I loved the Comedy Central run but I hate the Hulu run sadly - zero laughs in the 5 episodes I watched hopefully before giving up.

LexusBrian400 Apr 13, 2026 +2
That's true but I think IFC was a good fit for WKUK at the time and it had a good run. Skit comedy shows don't usually last much longer than they did. If it would have gone to Comedy Central or any other big network, we would have had "WKUK by committee" , and I don't think that would have worked out very well at all. They had a lot of freedom at IFC.

Naw I think you are correct. It's one of the best shows ever put on TV but marketing was non existent and it's not like it picked up after the second season ended. Just a bummer all around. I miss cool Rick... and Breakfast Spreads, and John's facial expressions, and Dennis &twins... and of course Kurtwood Smith acting circles around everyone. Dammit. Some recent examples would be Suits and Manifest, both of which surged in popularity after being added to Netflix (Manifest even managed to be brought back for a fourth season as a result).

I mean, Suits was popular enough to get 9 seasons.

Kinda hated the ending to manifest, though.

Cagney & Lacey It got cancelled and people started writing to CBS, asking (politely) "Just what the blank do you think you're doing?" It got un-cancelled.

The Owl House. Disney cut the show down from the planned 3 seasons to just 2 seasons and 3 hour-long specials. But that’s when the show really found its audience and became quite the hit. The ratings for those final three episodes were huge.  While I’m glad the show was able to wrap up its story, it sucks that it never got the chance to tell the story it was truly intending to tell. (Compared to Amphibia which was able to tell its epic story across three seasons.) And the popularity of Owl House characters in the Chibi shorts proves that Disney really messed up by canceling it.

Kingdom (the mma one) I think there are only 3 seasons and its deffo got room for one more. Great show. Another one is Jericho. I mention that one in here every time this thread pops up.

Police Squad! In Color. Though I think that's the odd case of the show gaining popularity because of a movie revival, instead of a movie revival happening because the show gained an audience in reruns.

Family guy was cancelled originally after a couple seasons. Then released on dvd and got a cult following and exploded.

1899, from the creators of Dark. Really curious where that show was headed, but super enjoyable first series.

The Expanse is a good one. Started out on Syfy, was very well received but never found a big enough audience and was cancelled after 3 series. Amazon picked it up and made another 3 series and it became one of the most watched streaming series at the time.

Rome. Caught it years after it was cancelled. Really liked it. Too bad the ending was rushed. Another one was Warrior. It was cancelled, then revived. Very good action and fun. Don't think its coming back.

Terriers. Just one beautiful season of Chandlerian neo-noir. By the time people realized what they were missing, the show had been cancelled.
