What's listnook doing with all those programmers?

Posted by kemitche

We've been busy at listnook lately. With [so many programmers](http://blog.listnook.com/2011/06/listnook-levels-up-with-three-new.html) and [open sorcerers](http://blog.listnook.com/2011/06/shout-out-to-sorcerers.html), there's a lot of little things going on to make the listnook experience a little better every day. Since we're constantly hard at work up here and we love [tooting](http://blog.listnook.com/2011/05/socialite-for-firefox-4.html) [our own](http://blog.listnook.com/2011/03/pimping-and-other-ways-to-find-new.html) [horn](http://blog.listnook.com/2010/08/new-features-to-start-your-week.html), we thought you all might like a way to see some of the smaller updates that go on more constantly, such as: * You've probably seen the recent [NSFW](http://www.listnook.com/r/modnews/comments/i5nc5/moderators_you_can_now_mark_and_unmark_posts_as/) changes, but did you know all the details? You'll find them [here](http://www.listnook.com/r/modnews/comments/i5nc5/moderators_you_can_now_mark_and_unmark_posts_as/). * Do you reply to your own comments? (WHY?) Well, if you do, you've noticed that you get an orangered, but nothing in your inbox. [This has been fixed](http://www.listnook.com/r/changelog/comments/ibefd/no_more_orangereds_on_selfreplies/)! With that in mind, I'm proud to announce the inception of [r/changelog](http://www.listnook.com/r/changelog) (by the way, thank you to user "changelog" for letting us take over that listnook!). We'll be keeping it up to date with minor features and bug fixes like the ones above as they get rolled out to the site. (Big things will continue to get spotlighted on [r/announcements](http://www.listnook.com/r/announcements) or [r/blog](http://www.listnook.com/r/blog) as appropriate, too.)

Absolutely, and we'd love it if you did! Feel free to fork our [github repo](https://github.com/listnook/listnook/), and take a peek into [r/listnookdev](http://www.listnook.com/r/listnookdev), [r/bugs](http://www.listnook.com/r/bugs), and [r/ideasfortheadmins](http://www.listnook.com/r/ideasfortheadmins) for various things.

That's an interesting idea, but do consider how easy it would be to game such a system - it's not difficult to create more than one account and get them all to subscribe. Hopefully I'm not too much of a debbie downer as I respond to various requests... it's easy to find reasons to *not* do something, after all.

Y'know, if listnook had some sort of education program that tought volunteers how to write code specifically for listnook, more coding would get done, marketable skills would be taught, and good will between users and the owners would skyrocket. Or maybe I'm just ignorant.

There used to be a page somewhere with a list of all of the admins. It had their cartoon, what they do, etc. Basically the same info that's in the blog post about the new programmers, except for all in one place. What ever happened to that? It was much easier than trying to remember who does what.

So you have multiple programmers working fulltime and the best they can come up with is marking a post with a tag and a simple bug fix? ಠ\_ಠ Sorry to be negative, but it doesn't seem like they are doing anything.
0
kemitche Jun 28, 2011 +3
It's easy to say a bug fix is "simple" in hindsight, when just looking at the lines of code changed.

kemitche Jun 28, 2011 +2
As a long time user of the site, I definitely understand the frustrations with downtime. We've been working lately on making things more stable, but there are also small, easy changes/bug fixes/features we can implement quickly that add a lot of value. They can be rolled out and tested quickly (in an afternoon or even an hour or two), and they give us a break from the "big" issues without taking too much time away. (They also give us new guys a chance to learn different parts of the listnook code) On the other hand, the stability issues are more complex. We're working on those issues as well, of course, but they take a bit more time - they won't all be fixed overnight.

Hey, since I didn't see anyone who's taken the time to say it yet, Thanks man! It's easy for us to b**** when things don't run smoothly, but that's just because most of us are self-important jackasses (myself included, usually). I figured it might be nice to hear a "thank you" for a change. So, thanks for keeping my favorite site up and running! :)

xyroclast Jun 29, 2011 +1
I consider it a viable alternative to adding an "Edit: Bla bla bla extra comment" sometimes, if the original comment is concise as it is. Edit: In other words, more for other people to see rather than for me to get an orangered.

We intend this to be a sort of condensed changelog for code changes with explanations of what they are and what they mean. If you really want to see a piece-by-piece changelog for the code you can just check out our [github commit log](http://github.com/listnook/listnook/commits/master). As soon as a piece of code is deemed safe we try to merge the changes out to that open source log. Usually ends up being same-day.
7

Damnit, changelog's listnook was my favoritest!
16
yurigoul Jun 28, 2011 +3
But how come is he a user for 4 years and has next to nothing karma? And he had his own sublistnook? How did he do that?
3
reseph Jun 28, 2011 +3
You could create sublistnooks without much karma back in the days.
3
yurigoul Jun 29, 2011 +1
Ok, but is there a point where old karma got traded in to new karma and somehow he fucked up the deal and got less than he expected in return? He is under 10/10. I am not a celebrity, I just comment and sometimes submit and after nearly 3 years I am at 100/3200 or so. That is like 1200 per year. That is low compared to a lot of people. Not that I am obsessed with karma or so - then I should have more - but I am wondering. Someone with his own sublistnook is not a lurker.
1
bittermang Jun 28, 2011 +9

Since we have all these new programmers, can we finally get collapsed comments to stay collapsed when we use the back button to come back to the comment page? I know it sounds petty, but it drives me crazy having to recollapse everything to find my place after I accidentally open a link in the same tab. Raldi said [its really difficult](http://www.listnook.com/r/ideasfortheadmins/comments/cbzje/persist_collapsed_state_of_comments_so_they_dont/), and [can't be done in a scalable way](http://www.listnook.com/r/ideasfortheadmins/comments/cpt82/i_often_collapse_comments_when_i_click_a_link/). But its not that bad, because [I did it](http://parrot.wchapman.net/listnook/11-04-29/back.html) entirely on the client side using javascript and a form. By the way, you guys are doing a great job with the little and the big stuff.
2
brock_lee Jun 28, 2011 +6
As long as we're here....why cant we just change the submission page to simply have one tab with a title, a link, text, and a sublistnook? Is there a good reason you can't do both in the same submission? If they submit a link, it's not a "self" post, if they don't have a link, then it is a "self" post. It would virtually eliminate the number of people who post text thinking they are also posting a link. If they are trying to post a link to a sublistnook that does not allow links, then they would still get the message that they get now if they try to submit a link.

I think they are writing code and technical manuals on how so set up a free public network that covers the US better than the corporations using everyone existing technology and free public access points. We have the technology to kill isp's and build our own network. A network where allyou need to know is how to connect with at least one neighbor.

Maybe they deleted the petabytes of comments from articles from 2005 and earlier or just made them into static pages versus queries that can be pulled at any time.

If you jinx it, I'll hunt you down, and you'll *wish* you had some pants.

>you get an orangered, but nothing in your inbox. This has been fixed! You jest. I just received a phantom orangered a moment ago after I commented.

skeeto Jun 29, 2011 +1
Yeah, it looks like they fixed a different, insignificant orangered problem. The phantom orangereds happen when someone replies and then deletes the comment before you see it. It registers in your inbox, but doesn't unregister.

So are we gonna find a way to upvote this user or what? [http://www.listnook.com/user/changelog](http://www.listnook.com/user/changelog)

Good idea for the sublistnook. :) I don't have a to-do list for what I'll contribute next, but I'll have something soon. :)

My guess is keeping them in a trunk in the basement dressed in leather with ball gags in their mouths.

Can you programmers go help out over in r/openant? They seem to have stalled...
2
PacketScan Jun 28, 2011 +2
I'm going to let you finish but i haven't seen a 404 in AGES!!!

maffick Jun 29, 2011 +2
What's listnook doing with all those programmers? Lagging.

I read the title and thought, "Building listnook androids?"

Hey you guys/girls lets make an augmented reality mmo fueled by listnook's karma system. you come withing *x* distance of someone with superior/inferior karma and you get a notification. you look through your hand dandy hand held or HUD display or reticle and see a fellow listnookor/netizen sporting that new pet mini pet alien walking around with him/her. what do you do wat doooo yoooouuu dooooo?

MJKauz Jun 29, 2011 +2
I'd like to help out if you need Arabic speakers.

I could not resist clicking the NSFW link.

> Do you reply to your own comments? (WHY?) I'll reply to my linked submissions if it needs some further explanation. There's no way to add text to a link submission (or if there is, I don't know it). And if there isn't, maybe this could be added *hint hint

When is the Java port coming?

Why do we need a NSFW tag when the listnook TOS bans material that is [sexually suggestive or appeals to a prurient interest](http://www.listnook.com/r/todayilearned/comments/i92vi/) -- seems totally unnecessary

xyroclast Jun 28, 2011 +2
You haven't been on listnook long, have you?

SkullFuckMcRapeCunt Jun 29, 2011 +2
What a pointless f****** post. You make two miniscule updates and want a f****** prize? Add transparency to moderation. You cunts.

I got my own python nightmares thank you. It's a great idea though, if I was looking for experience I'd do it in a heart beat. *If I use some of your code I'll add something.

You guys should take on Disqus. You already have the infrastructure for a badass comment system. Make web comments even better than they already are. That's my opinion.

merlinm Jun 28, 2011 +1
I think you should engage in an exploratory new model where based on a lame social networking concept. Make sure to ignore any contrary feedback from your user base.

What's the reason why you've started using googleapis? The site was fine when I allowed scripting only for Listnook.com and I could up/downvote and reply to posts.
