Chronic stress and zero sleep. We treat burnout like a badge of honor, meanwhile it’s quietly destroying people.

I had a really really high paying job in NYC but worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week.
After 2 years I quit and moved to NJ. I work for the government for a slight pay decrease but only 35 hours a week. Best decision I ever made

I had a job where 50hrs/week was expected, and I frequently worked more, and had a 45-minute commute. Now I work 10 minutes from at a government job, and they would prefer I not work more than 40 hours. I only took a 10% pay cut to do it, and the benefits are much better.

I started a job as an admin at a college, and half of the interview was "Now, you work 37 hours a week, but there really isn't *that* much work. Is that okay?" They were scarred because the last person in the job quit because there was too much free time.
Meanwhile I'm just sitting in the office playing a few rounds of Slay the Spire between emails, and have a 2 minute walking commute. Absolute no brainer.

Plot twist I was not functioning well despite the fact I would have high energy and ability while not sleeping, often I'd have finished my school work practiced my instrument painted something reorganized my room stayed up talking to strangers or playing game cleaning our house reorganizing our house I'd have school plus band practice and later work until 11 at night after school

I despise people who work themselves to the bone almost as much as I despise their employers for allowing it to happen. They make it harder for everyone else by essentially telling their employer, “This is fine,” and their employer then expects the same from everyone else.
It’s *not* fine, and it makes it much harder for anyone with a backbone to stand up to the company and refuse to work themselves to death. This is why we needed unions, but Americans got so used to being protected that they forgot whey we needed them in the first place. Now you have working class people vomiting up conservative, anti-union talking points like they’ve had a corporate chip implanted in their dumb f****** brains.
I’m thankful that my employer seems to treat work/life balance like it’s more than words. They give us extra “mental wellness” days off now (they doubled the days this year, in fact), and management training spends a lot of time focusing on how to spot burnout, how to address it (encouraging time off, frequent breaks, etc), and how to get mental health services when needed. I’ve worked for employers who simply don’t care about this stuff, and the difference is like night and day.

Liver cirrhosis also kills you horribly after heavy alcohol consumption.
Both ways are terrible ways to die that will ruin your life.
Gambling addiction ruins your life *now*. It just bankrupts and leaves you in the gutter. The damage it can do is basically the same as heroin/cocaine/crack, just without the potential to kill you instantly if you screw up the amounts. Otherwise it's the same track of bleeding you dry of all your assets.

Issue with gambling is that it's an addiction that you can possibly exercise it so well that it could fix all of your problems.
Not that it's likely because even if you do chances are you will convince yourself to keep going.
Gambling advertisement should be treated the same as cigarettes in the uk, no public advertisement allowed amd all gambling material should be forced to show you the bleakest outcomes.

I work a shift that runs over the weekend; we work three twelve-hour overnight shifts.
I can't tell you how many of the people who work my shift are also trying to work full-time weekday jobs!
We just had a guy quit because he burned out after two weeks of it, because he was coming home Monday morning after a 12-hour shift, and going straight to his other job to work 8 additional hours. On top of that, he was working 8 hours on Friday, sleeping for an hour, then coming in for his 12-hour night shift!
I know of at least 3 other people doing it right now, and more who work PT jobs during the week.
The thing about it is that our job pays a decent living wage, over $30 an hour. There should be no need for someone to require a second job if they're making more than $30 an hour. A person cannot survive working like that; these people are going to work themselves into an early grave.

Not just attention spans. Algorithms favor engagement which often means presenting people posts that will anger them or make them sad/doubtful about the world around them. Much like how news media hyper focus on crime despite crime levels plummeting in my lifetime. But worse because it is fine-tuned to find your interest and respond to things you click on regularly. So it is anger-inducing clickbait chosen based on your patterns with the intention of keeping you upset all the time so that you don't log off the app.
And of course, this can lead to skewed perspectives and very easy misunderstandings about events and other people.

Cars.
Directly killing people by crashing into them and indirectly killing thousands and thousands via air pollution.
30% of micro plastics come directly from car tyres.
Roads and carparks are devastating to the environment we depend on for clean water and oxygen.
Noise pollution from any traffic above 30km/h directly contributes to degradation of mental health.

Misinformation. It used to be illegal to advertise using false information. Now, as long as you phrase it just so, it doesn't really matter what you say. Companies are using this to advertise all sorts of things as "healthy" or better than the alternative, even though a lot of it is used as an excuse not to actually follow healthcare recommendations and ends us with the death of the person.

Alcohol. It’s Cancer in a bottle.
The World Health Organization (WHO) plays a significant role in addressing alcohol-related health issues. It provides data on alcohol consumption patterns, health consequences, and policy responses through its Global Information System on Alcohol and Health. The WHO classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, indicating that no level of consumption is safe for health. Additionally, the WHO has established a Global Alcohol Action Plan 2022-2030 aimed at reducing the harmful use of alcohol through effective strategies.

Self Care - My daughter (40) spends a huge amount of time making sure she does all the recommended stress and anxiety reducers; she has apps on her phone for everything from calming stress, sleep routines, everyday living life hacks, endless podcasts. Seems her focus is on self care to the point that she is running from one self care task to the next. And yet, she's stressed and anxious.
I wonder if she should just STOP. Put her feet up, close her eyes and take a fricken nap.

I see a lot of responses that say “sugar”, “alcohol” etc. while I agree with these - it seems like society knows about the dangers.
My vote is for plastics (at least the plastics that break down into microplastics).
Close tie is PFAS and certain pesticides like Glyphosate. Living near farming communities - they really spray that sh*t everywhere! It’s all over our food supply!

Alcohol is the worst drug known to man. It may not kill as fast as some others, but the damage it inflicts on your body and your relationships is second to none. It’s the only drug that can kill you from withdrawals. Other drugs’ withdrawals will make you WANT to snuff it, but only alcohol can take it to the finish line.

This will get me downvoted, but obesity. I think the body positivity movement is going to have some long term consequences because so many people used that moment in time to not look after themselves. The human heart is not meant to handle that kind of chronic stress. Neither are your joints or many other organs.
I had a classmate who recently beat an early stage cancer. I’m very happy for her, until she posted online saying she was going to remain “fluffy.” I know cancer has numerous origins from genetics to environmental factors, but staying overweight after that, I cannot see how any doctor would think that’s a good thing.
I’m not advocating for everyone to be “heroin-chic” thin. I’m not trying to shame anyone for their size. The numbers on a weight scale are not the only measure of health. I’m saying that the human body was not designed to be obese.

People have misinterpreted the body positivity movement.
Firstly, body positivity is for everyone no matter their size. There are healthy-sized people, even athletic people, everywhere who live in a constant state of despising their bodies. At a minimum, this causes distress, anxiety and depression. At its worse, it can trigger eating disorders. People struggle to accept their bodies *no matter what weight they are*. The body positivity movement is about disrupting social narratives that shame people for having bodies that do not conform to aspirational, elite social norms. It applied to weight, to height, to skin colour, to hair type, to having prosthetic limbs, to having acne, to body hair, to alopecia.
Secondly, almost no one who believes in body positivity is encouraging people to become obese or not care for themselves. On the contrary, it was always about reengaging with your body in mentally healthy ways and taking good care of it. When you start losing shame around your body, feeling like you have to hide it away, and losing the feeling that you have to apologize for your body, it becomes much easier to make healthier choices. Leave the house, go exercise, go for a hike, go socialize, eat in public, get some proper sleep cos you’re less anxious. It has allowed obese people to enter spaces they didn’t feel welcome in before, the prime example being public gyms and pools.
Plus, obese people are allowed to experiencing joy: feel comfortable wearing a bathing suit to the beach or the spa. They’re allowed to wear pretty clothes. They’re allowed to enjoy food.

Obesity.
Kills way more people than smoking, and causes way more inconveniences and problems before the health problems really start than smoking does. It's totally fine to see someone smoke and be visibly disgusted with it, however it doesn't apply to a problem that's much more prevalent, and going to cost us way more in the long run.
I think people should have the freedom to eat whatever they want, but much like smoking, should come with the judgement of having no self control or good interest in your life. You're creating the same problems for your loved ones that smokers do.

Beautiful-Thing6554Mar 31, 2026

It already comes with that judgement, it’s just not openly said. It’s sort of why being neither obese nor overweight has really become the biggest ‘wealth’ indicator in developed countries.
It’s of course the most overrepeated thing of all time, but going from obese to not, or especially being somewhat fit, really completely changes how you feel and moreso your treatment. Certainly doesn’t solve everything, but it really is wild. Especially after 30

This. I had my bariatric surgery and then joined the gym last year. I am down 165 lbs, only 18 to go to goal. The price difference in taking care of yourself versus eating c**** junk is amazing. If you choose this road - there will be sacrifices of ALL kinds. Until you see that first major blood work scan to see how much you've changed, you won't get it. Doors open now that I couldn't have even climb stairs to before, because outward appearance really is what people judge. I am going to be 48 this year, in the best shape of my life, ever.

giving little kids ipads and letting them watch hours of youtube reels and play roblox is RUINING their brains and attention spans. Kids can no longer read at grade level, they lack imagination, they lack distress tolerance skills, they lack real-world problem-solving and critical thinking skills, they lack social skills, they lack emotional reciprocity skills. They are wired for constant dopamine hits. We are raising a generation of future addicts who can't keep jobs because they will not be able to tolerate boredom or mundane life without constant stimulation/novelty feeding their dopamine-addicted brains. It's actually scary to think of the future because parents normalize this "ipad generation" too much.
(this also goes for giving kids smart phones and unrestricted access to the internet)

Radon is the Number one leading cause of lung cancer in non smokers and in smokers makes it 20 times more likely you'll get lung cancer. It's odorless, scentless and undetectable. It can enter your house through well water or just through cracks in your basement, through your concrete floors or even your granite countertops. Modern well sealed houses are the worst as they act like vacuums drawing the radon in.
