Highly, HIGHLY recommend switching to a different therapist or councilor who works for you. It’s so much better to have personally tailored treatment plan than to try to DIY with advice from the internet. That being said, a big part of cognitive behavioral therapy is finding the right questions to ask yourself in the moment. Picking up the phone to doomscroll- why am I doing this? What am I getting out of it? Is it worth it? Maybe you’re ruminating on negative thoughts- is this something I’ve thought about before? Is it true? Is it HELPFUL to think about it more? I find that asking questions is a good way to break out of loops and habits that aren’t particularly good for me.

Via Wikipedia:
"C*** and ball torture (CBT)[a] is a sexual activity involving the application of pain or constriction to the male genitals. This may involve directly painful activities, such as genital piercing, wax play, genital spanking, squeezing, ball-busting, genital flogging, urethral play, tickle torture, e***** electrostimulation, kneeing, or kicking.[1] The recipient of such activities may receive direct physical pleasure via masochism, emotional pleasure through e***** humiliation, or knowledge that the play is pleasing to a sadistic dominant."

Agreed.
I used to half jokingly do it to myself and now Ive noticed I pretty much do it constantly without joking.
It sounds stupid, because you'd think since I'm aware of it that I'd just stop doing it, but it's become pretty natural and instinctual.
I think it's the reason why I've gotten pretty depressed in the past year and a half as well.
So to anyone reading take this advice really seriously. Love yourself.

And to the person who needs to hear it most, it sounds like the worst advice
"duh why don't you just choose to be happy 🌈🌈, think happy thoughts 🤡🤡"
But it's not even like that, it's the opposite, they treat themselves like total garbage in their own mind, then outwardly put themselves down and laugh off their suffering like a joke as a coping mechanism.

I feel like I had the opposite experience. I used to be so much more self conscious and anxious before I realized that I was taking myself way too seriously. I started joking about the things I’m self conscious about and it felt really freeing for me. Like it takes the power away from the things I can’t control.
But that’s just me, YMMV.

I've been semi-unknowingly doing this for years and years until my bucket was filled. It got so far that it became almost impossible to get anything done. As soon as i start something that i have expectations for, i immediately get overwhelmed with stress and doubt. Even something as simple as making a reservation at a restaurant became near impossible.
It really managed to make me hate everything about life.
I'm in therapy now but god damn, i feel like i have to re-learn being an adult.

You can get addicted to it like you can with anything. There’s been plenty of days I’ve wasted too much time scrolling Listnook.
However a key distinction between Listnook and Insta or TikTok is the anonymity versus the focus on self. I want to be anonymous on Listnook and I gather most people here feel the same, we’d be mortified if someone irl found our account lol. On the flipside, many who engage with social media, they want to be seen. Maybe not everyone wants to be Insta-famous, but they want people to see their pictures, read their stories (lol I never had an Insta so I don’t know the terms so forgive me if I’m getting the terms wrong).
That’s a key difference and a big component why social media addiction can be so much stronger and more harmful than a “Listnook addiction.” Feeds into the ego, which we all have. I’m not acting like we’re all enlightened altruistic people, but I don’t know how else to say the simple truth that most of us here aren’t here to prop up ourselves and ego, we want to participate in communities.

Listnook still has an algorithm (which often prioritizes controversial news and discussions) that impacts dopamine the same way a s*** machine might. The Karma system also is an incentive for people to keep engaging in ways that might reinforce groupthink as well, and the buzz of upvotes can be more alluring than people think.
It’s not short form though, so that’s a positive.

Yep, go to the beach bro!!!! Side note - did you know that only sun BURN is carcinogenic? Short bouts of sun exposure are completely healthy without any detriment. Also, sunglasses dramatically increase your risk of sunburn. This is because AMOUNT of melatonin production (which protects your cells from burning) is based on the amount of UV rays your EYES absorb. So even if you're getting toasted, if your eyes are cool, your body will be merrily going about its way.
Something similar happens with fevers and cool cloths. Never put a cold cloth on your neck when you have a fever. The receptors that tell your brain how hot your body is are in your brain, not your main body. They register blood temp. If you cool the blood as it goes through the neck, body will say oh NO! Not enough fever! And crank up the heat. You can literally cook your own organs that way 😯 a cold cloth on the forehead is safe.
(Fever is a protective mechanism, it sequesters iron so viruses and bacteria can't use it to replicate, so we can fight it off better - this is also why you don't want to treat a fever as long as it's low enough to be safe.)
Sorry. Too many random facts. The body is so cool though and I am not currently teaching so, you get to be my captive audience. Lol

28
TheMrsH1124Mar 27, 2026
+36
Oh thank you 😂 there is so much that is cool!
Let's see. The gut is another favorite of mine. Did you know that a HEALTHY human has ten times as many beneficial bacteria cells as human cells in/on their body? And you might know this already, because it's been in the news a bit, but the bacteria in your gut are what actually create the components in your brain that allow for mental stability etc. That's why taking antibiotics often has depression as a side effect! You literally killed the happy-chemical-makers! Still take abx if you need them, though - your appendix is theorized to hold a copy of your gut microbiome that it can then "reseed" the gut with. That makes a lot of sense to me and it's probably why we can't just treat an infected appendix with antibiotics and cure it, because the antibiotics usually bypass it.
On that note I hold the opinion that there are no USELESS body parts. Just ones we can live without better than others.
Oh this is one of my favorites. I also have a degree in history so this combines all my loves. The liver is the only organ in the body that can regrow. This is why you can do liver transplants pretty easily, the donor gets their liver back. But the thing that's crazy!!! Did you read the story of Prometheus as a child, where he's chained to a mountain and his heart gets eaten by an eagle every day, because he gave man fire (I think that was it, right?) and then it regrows. In school, I read that in Latin from one of the original Latin writers who was retelling it from the original Greek - and he didn't say heart. He said LIVER. I don't think that's coincidence BUT HOW DID THE ANCIENT GREEKS KNOW THE LIVER REGENERATES?????
another similar fact - have you heard of the platonic solids? Well in 2014 astronomers in France claim to have determined that the bounds of the universe are actually shaped exactly as Plato described them. Maybe they are hoaxing us, idk, I don't have a big telescope to redo their experiments, but it's cool 😂
Last one for tonight: I started every year of chemistry with the previous fact, and then this one. What did the ancient Greeks think made up the universe? Earth, air, fire and water. Oh lol dumb idiots, how silly, right, four things make up the universe? Hmmm. What actually makes up the universe? Protons, neutrons and electrons (let's not get into physics, that's not my wheelhouse, you're getting the drift of my point, I hope). Huh. Combinations of identical components make all the things we see. Sure, it's not earth air fire and water, but could YOU look at the world around you, 6000 years ago, and say guys, everything is made up of invisible particles that are just four different identical units repeated and repeated? I'm not that smart. Idk how they did it.
I know we verged from anatomy to the ancient Greeks, but there's just too much cool stuff in the world!

I love all your random facts, and would argue that matter is all made up of earth, air, fire, and water. Earth = matter in a solid state. Air = gaseous matter. Fire = plasma and various forms of energy if we're counting energy. Water = liquids. It's the states of matter, plus or minus energy, but just described in a way that made sense to the ancient Greeks.

That's a good question because we can't ever actually do real research on humans, because humans have these inconvenient things called rights and need to be able to live their lives without being controlled into nice tidy groups. 😂
But iirc I BELIEVE the study was done in controlled mouse models and I also think that supplemental vitamin D might have been preventative. Don't quote me on that though. I should dig out the study, but it's linked in a lab somewhere in my old teacher files on my old computer 😂

It absolutely fucks you up when you are not built for it. no routine, no specific time of day that's "free time" consistently. You can almost never agree to doing something with friends because you might have to work.
I'm now in a different job, but still stuck with Weekend shifts which wasn't what I agreed on in the Interview but I guess I'm stuck with it now. its at least a little bit of an improvement.

alblasterMar 27, 2026

Yep. I work at a liquor store. Most people know alcohol isn't good for you, but so many people have this idea of alcohol being not that bad unless you drink too much or if you're an alcoholic. But to a lot of people being an alcoholic means drinking a handle or a 30 pack or a box of wine a day. It really doesn't have to be that much. People will act like just a few shots is keeping it light. But that shit adds up. A few drinks here and there and it can get out of control. Even if you "only" do your 4 beers or shots a day that's still 28 drinks a week which is more than double the weekly recommended amount and the damage will catch up to you. You'll get tired and start to rely on that buzz just to feel baseline. But it's a risk. I've had regular customers suddenly drop dead in their 30s and 40s from drinking. I'm not saying don't drink at all. I do. I'm saying be mindful of how much you drink, limit it, don't drink everyday, and try not to always include drinking for everything especially if you're bored. Some people just have a idea of what excess looks like and it's way too much. So a little less looks reasonable. It's not. Remember it is a poison that alters your brain chemistry. I would definitely avoid if your family has a history of addiction. Otherwise just be careful. If you feel like you need a drink to make a day or event better don't be afraid to ask for help before it's too late. I've commented on a few threads about alcohol limits before, and it's shocking how many folks go into those threads claiming 20+ drinks a week is normal - they drink that many and aren't an alcoholic!

I'm a small person and don't drink often, so the idea that people have 4 drinks a day is crazy to me. 4 shots is enough to get me pretty drunk on one of my fun nights out haha. I basically never drink more than that, and drinking at all is pretty rare for me

Most people don't realize it, but alcohol is poison. It slowly kills those who consume it regularly, even in relative moderation. Metabolizing alcohol causes oxidative stress, which produces cell, protein, and DNA damage. This is what causes us to age and eventually die. Alcohol accelerates the process dramatically.

Talking poorly of others behind their back, but also just in general. Being critical of a stranger’s appearance. Making fun of something someone said.
Seems like no biggie, but I’m convinced no happy person does this.

I see what you’re getting at. Contrarian, cynical bullies suck the energy out of the air while also ruining their reputation if they trash talk at the wrong time with the wrong people.
However I’ve def been happy while joking about someone or roasting someone’s terrible outfit.
I don’t see any correlation between roasting and internal happiness. But a perpetual bully is a different facet. In fact when I am unhappy I don’t really notice or care to point out something silly like a bad fit.
I roasted maga falling apart, I am happy.

You're describing something different(it looks the same though). Talking shit and roasting is not the same as trying to put someone down that doesn't need it. Let's say for instance a guy weighs 205lbs and is built like a brick and someone calls him fat. They are not fat. The person cslling them out is insecure and weird. While bad outfits are subjective... they can also be bad taste to a lot of people. You're not trying to bring someone down necessarily out of jealousy and insecurity. It isn't the same.

Everyone talks shit, it's inevitable. I hear a lot at work, keep in mind I say "hear", mad shit talk about other coworkers. I feel bad because I hear it, but when they talk shit about others when you're there, what do they say about you when you aren't? I just keep my trap shut. If I have something to say, say it in private....but if they suck I also like watching the drama go down. Not my problem.

You are absolutely right. This kind behaviour is a symptom of an unhappy person. The goal is for them to be able to convince themselves "I may be lower than a frogs bottom, but at least I am not as bad as THEM.
Unfortunately, like an drug, they build a tolerance and need an ever increasing dose to convince themselves.

Great answer. Every time you talk shit about someone behind their back, you create a worse version of the world for them to exist in. The severity of that depends on who you’re talking shit with, but their interactions with that person will be filtered through that lens no matter what. That’s probably the best case scenario (for you). Worst case, you’ve created a worse version of the world for yourself because you just revealed yourself as a judgmental gossip who no one should feel safe opening up and being vulnerable around.

It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation. A lot of people do this because they are unhappy with themselves but, ironically, doing this constantly makes you more unhappy with yourself.
People who judge others constantly also believe they are being judged themselves, so everything they do has to pass through a "how does this make me seem" filter in their head. Which is truly a miserable way to live.

"Happy people don't act like that."
I drill this in my kids' heads. I always tell them that sometimes, the people we want to hate actually deserve compassion. Plus, it's just easier to go through life feeling sorry for someone and moving on than to be angry with hate in our hearts and grudges simmering in us.

Goes for uncomfortable aspects of all life really. If you can’t face the hard things and sit with them until you find a solution, your hardships will never be resolved. You have an escapist problem. Have courage to confront the difficult things. Feel the hard, scary emotions that we were taught to ignore. Have strength to be fully human, even the undesirable, vulnerable parts of yourself. Forgive. You don’t need to apologize for existing.

Excess health obsession. A lot of people worm there way into eating disorders and body dysmorphia they never knew existed because they are trying hard to control their body in ways that's just not worthwhile. Sleep, eat a balanced diet (which includes sugar, carbs, and things you like), exercise, and lower stress to the best of your ability.
Trust me, at least in my country, our health is very impacted by the government. Only so much you can do. Don't add orthorexia nervosa to your problems.

Apathy.
A lot of people think that to take good care of themselves is too much effort, going to the gym, eating a clean diet etc.
On the other hand, to completely self destruct is too aggressive, drink, drugs, going really off the wall..
So they find the happy middle ground. They don't go to the gym, nor do they drink or take drugs too often, instead they just do nothing, not taking care of themselves, not destroying their lives too quickly, they just slowly get worse and worse, not exercising, not eating well, the occasional binge eating or drinking, staying up too late or not getting enough sleep, until eventually they are ruined, as slowly as possible, and one day they wake up with a bad back, big belly, sore knees, poor mental health, and wonder where did it all go wrong.

Poor dental care. I went to college for dental assisting. Did you know roughly 70% of heart problems are caused by dental issues that were ignored?
When I say ignored, I know a lot of people struggle to go to the dentist because it's so crazy expensive, it's only now that I have medical coverage that I could go for a cleaning twice a year and to make sure everything is good. But if you do have the money, please go. Just because you're not in pain doesn't mean you don't have any problems. There's actually a handful of serious issues where you won't feel any pain, like pariadontis (I know that's not how you spell it but I am too dumb to remember how it's spelled lol if you're able to correct me please do) your teeth will fall out from this, and it's a lot easier to know you have it if you get regular cleanings when they check the depth of your gums. I'm fairly certain 2mm is the goal to have, having no dip is bad and having a deep dip is bad and a sign of this disease.

Constant low-grade complaining — not venting, just the ambient background noise of mild dissatisfaction. It feels harmless because nothing dramatic happens, but it rewires how you process the world. You start noticing what's wrong before you notice what's right, and eventually that becomes your default lens. The scary part is it's socially reinforced. Most conversations are complaint-bonding sessions, so opting out feels antisocial.
