What's something someone said to you that just... stuck? Like for no real reason?

Posted by ComprehensiveBid4989

Not even sure why I'm posting this. Was cleaning my room earlier and randomly remembered something a guy told me like 6 years ago. We met once. Never saw him again. And yet here I am thinking about one throwaway thing he said like it was yesterday. It wasn't even deep honestly. But something about the timing I guess. Made me wonder if people even realize when they do that to someone. Just casually change the way you see things and walk away completely unaware. Anyway. Anyone else have one of those? A sentence that just lives rent free in your head. From anyone — friend, stranger, whoever. Mine's embarrassing so maybe I'll share it in the comments lol

My first serious boyfriend and I were going somewhere and I was driving, and he goes, "why do women check their rearview mirror all the time? What are you expecting to see back there?" No idea why that stuck in my head, maybe because it was one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

Maybe he was high on something that day😶

Hatecookie Mar 28, 2026 +13
He often began questions with "why do women..." I didn't know that was a red flag back then.

ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I don't know why people started these unnecessary things about women. She can't do this and that even in india itself there are a lot of examples where women are dominating only if we consider a physical strength thing then women lacks a bit but it's ok women's are mentally far stronger than any guy (imo)

What's funny is that most of the media and stories available to me growing up were written/produced by men, about male characters, so I am very familiar with how men think, and how women think, since I am a woman. Men do not get the same exposure to how women think, and find them mysterious, or stupid, or both, not realizing that we have had to live with one foot in each world our entire lives. Meanwhile, they only know half of what we know, because heaven forbid someone might think they're feminine or gay.

ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +4
This is such a real observation. The asymmetry is kind of wild when you think about it — women grow up reading books with male protagonists, watching movies centered on men, absorbing male perspectives as the "default" human experience. So you develop this almost bilingual fluency without even trying. And then men encounter a woman who thinks differently from them and it becomes this whole mystique, like she's unknowable, when really she just... hasn't been handed the same Rosetta Stone you were handed by necessity. The second part is maybe even more interesting though — the way men actively *resist* developing that same cross-perspective literacy because of what it might signal about them. Women had no choice but to learn both worlds. A lot of men won't even read a book with a female lead by choice. So the gap isn't just structural, it's also self-maintained. It's not really about intelligence on either side. It's about who was ever given the option to stay in their lane and who wasn't. And I have literally no words for bollywood directors 😐

You can't satisfy everybody at the same time. My dad used to say this.
7
ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Why do you have to satisfy anyone? Satisfy your soul not a society.
1
Immediate_Guitar7315 Mar 28, 2026 +3
It was meant more like "you can't avoid upsetting someone in life", so it's OK if some people feel bad about what you did... it matters what your conscience told you.

That's what I mentioned earlier Satisfy your soul....

"Nobody knows what they're doing. Everyone else is just trying to figure it out too", which made me a lot less hard on myself. When I was in my early twenties someone said our parents are just people too and that also stuck with me. I think lots of people go through that though where they realize that their parents are just people who make mistakes too and don't have all the answers.

It was from a fortune cookie. “Money is the root of all evil, and everyone needs roots.” I still can’t figure out if it’s profound or dumb.

for sure, it's wild how random stuff can stick with you like that. I have a friend who once said, "life's too short to be boring" and I still think about it all the time. sometimes those offhand comments hit way harder than they should.

During my school year the school hung up a banner that said: smile, hello, thank you and sorry. That one stuck with me for the longest. Smile, don't be shy to say hello, say thank you whenever possible, and don't afraid to say sorry.

Sounds weird but in middle school a boy said “I can’t kiss you, because you’re always talking.” It was true. I never shut up as a child especially when I was nervous. I’ve had to consciously learn to be quiet at times. I’m still a bubbly talkative person and I’m thankful for that, but I need to be quiet occasionally so I can listen and maybe get some kisses too.
5
ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +1
😂 But how strange it was that he didn't kiss you because you are talkative I mean if you could have kissed maybe for that moment you could hold your talk (just sayin)

A mate told me once that anxiety is just your brain trying to protect you from something that already happened. Not even a therapist or anything, just a bloke I was having a pint with. Something about the way he said it just reframed the whole thing for me.
3
ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +2
That's true I'm also an aspirant and whenever I am stuck in any situation which gives me anxiety I try to be distracted so I can overcome my anxiety

So, it's way too long of a different story, but I had a brain aneurysm and nearly died in 2010. After brain surgery was the coma, I came out of the coma with my left side paralyzed, then I spent ~6 months relearning how to walk. After that long road, my dearest friends invited me to lunch, and we all met at a local place. There were like 6 of us walking slowly (even after 15 years, I still limp/walk slowly) through a parking lot toward the restaurant. This random dude saw 6 people in their 20s slowly walking through a parking lot and yells, "If you walk any faster you might get there on time!" My best friend, his gf, and the girl I was dating at the time were f****** ***pissed***. I found it hilarious. But, after 15 years I still remember it vividly.
5
ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +3
Bro that story is wild — you survived a brain aneurysm, a coma, and six months relearning to walk, and some random guy in a parking lot thought he was being clever 😂 Honestly the fact that YOU were the one laughing while everyone else was ready to throw hands says a lot about you. That's a genuinely rare kind of perspective that most people never develop. Also your friends being that protective of you is kind of beautiful, even if the situation was absurd. Do you remember what you said back to him, or did you just let it go?
3
the-caped-cadaver Mar 28, 2026 +2
Lol, I didn't say anything. They (my friends) were more worried about 1, making sure I was alright and 2, saying/doing something to the guy. Frankly, we had all been through so much in the months leading up to that. I was just excited to be free from the hospitals/nurses/doctors/therapists, I just wanted to get inside the restaurant and relax with them a little bit.

Not from a person in real life, but an exchange from the movie Tombstone: Doc Holliday: “What do you want?” Wyatt: “Just to live a normal life” Doc Holliday: “There is no normal life, Wyatt. There’s just life. Now get on with it” For me it just resonates because life is inherently messy and complicated, and there is no “normal” life, because everyone is on a different path.

I knew a guy who, whenever we were outside and someone said "It's chilly out here today" he would respond with: "***Well, you know what they say. Chili today, hot tamale.***" Decades later it still pops into my head for no real reason... but anytime someone mentions that it's chilly today, I try my damnedest to not say it out loud in response.
1
ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Okay that's genuinely a perfect dad joke and I kind of love that guy. And there's something almost sweet about that being stuck in there too like your brain just has this little tripwire that fires every single time. Chilly outside. Chili today, hot tamale. Do you ever manage to hold it in or does it slip out sometimes?

I still remember...i was in 5th standard...and we were playing after the exam.....and one of my classmates came to me and said something about my skin color...and honestly...that particular sentence still stays in my head..... i still cannot forget how bad i felt at that point of time...it made me feel ugly, and i still carry that insecurity in my head.

I constantly remember one of my coworkers at my first job telling me I was African. She didn’t ask me if I was African, she told me I was African. And she was so confused when I kept telling her that I wasn’t. I’ve gotten British before but that was the only time anyone has thought I was African.

The crazy thing about this story is that I’m very visibly white. I had blonde hair as a kid and my complexion most of the year is comparable to paper. And my coworker was actually black so that’s kind of the craziest part.

I read this and I tried to think about it. It’s been ten minutes and I just realized that all the random things people have told me that live rent free in my head are all comments on my body. Either good or bad. I have so, so, so many of those sentences stuck in my head and didn’t even realize it. I suffer from ED so.. it shouldn’t surprise me, but it’s sad that I don’t remember other things because my mind is completely filled with those comments. “You know, with a butt big like that you shouldn’t wear those jeans” “I really have to admit, you have some very beautiful curves” “You know, your body is really super funny” “Oh, yeah, last year you really looked like a boiler. Now you look so much better” “Oh, you’re recovered in this clinic too? But you look amazing, you don’t look an0rexic at all!” “Oh my god girl, I never believed you when you always said your thighs are so much bigger than mine. Now I totally see it too” “Eating a chocolate bar out of the store like that…? Isn’t that, like.. really disgusting?”
2
ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Each one of those — you probably remember exactly who said it, where you were, what the light looked like. That's what makes these things so cruel. They don't pass through. They just... stay. And the fact that this is what filled up the space in your head. Not a good memory. Not a moment you felt proud. Not something funny a friend did. Just... this. That's heartbreaking. You're right to feel sad about it. Some of those are so specifically awful. The clinic one — someone turning your recovery into a compliment about how sick you looked. The chocolate bar. And the thighs one, where someone basically said I can now confirm your worst fear about yourself. Out loud. To your face. These weren't just careless. Some of them were mean in a really precise way. How are you doing right now, sitting with all of this?

In jr high school a friend of mine asked why I hugged “like that.” At first I was confused. Then, he explained that I kept my whole body away as if I wanted to keep my self distanced. He was right. Subconsciously, it was a way of keeping people from getting too close (literally and figuratively). It all clicked once he said that. From that day on, I only hugged people when I meant it. And I embrace them fully so they know I mean it.
4
ComprehensiveBid4989 Mar 28, 2026 +1
There are different types of hugs if the person is only a friend and somehow you have to hug you can give him a side hug that's it and in your case if you are not comfortable to hug anyone it's totally fine.
1
bastet_memphis Mar 28, 2026 +1
I remember being in Jr. High, and not being particularly "cool" at the time. A very popular girl in my neighborhood kind of adopted me as her friend, and I was way too eager to embrace it. She went to give me a hug one day getting off the bus and I pulled her in for a full body squeeze hug (my family don't mess around with weak hugs, and I had only grown up with big hugs, didn't know there was another way). She made some comment along the lines of "omg" and never hugged me again. That's when I learned the difference between an I mean it hug, and a casual teenage cool girl halfway hug.
