talking behind people's backs but acting friendly to their face. I instantly assume they're doing the same to me

This is worded perfectly. Especially that last sentence. I have a zero tolerance policy on this subject. For that reason exactly. Being cruel to someone who just because of a system that not only *allows* this type of behavior, but very often positively reinforces it. During Covid, I was working in sales at a furniture store. Since almost every damn thing comes from China (including “Made in USA” stuf because they may *assemble or build* the stuff on American soil, but the materials to do so almost always come from somewhere else… usually China), we were only given estimated dates when items would arrive. Not a guarantee. Customers were informed of this thoroughly and repeatedly before they purchased. Very often, things would get delayed because it was either sitting on a ship or in a stockyard or still in a warehouse overseas. Our entire staff was regularly cussed out, screamed and threatened with legal action, physical violence, and even death. Customers were threatening to come hurt and/or kill us over sofas and dining tables. Since sales worked on solely commission, we were paid until their shit was delivered. No one wanted these folks to get their furniture more than us. My coworkers and manager would have to apologize to these awful people and try to “save the sale.” A guy on my sales team even excused a death threat because “the guy was just stressed. People say things they don’t mean.” I was speechless. I now work a very physical job with absolutely zero customer interaction. Same income, if not a little more. I lost a lot of respect for mankind as a whole. I refuse to lose respect for myself just to make a buck.

When they loose control of their anger. Not fun to be around someone who looses their temper all the time. Even to little jokes

lf someone is rude to service staff,two-faced,takes advantage of kind people, refuses to admit mistakes,or puts on airs with lower-level staff,l will immediately lose all respect for them.

I judge someone (good/bad) based on how they speak about others when they’re not around to me. (Not including my close friends obviously) but if someone I barely know is trashing a mutual, I think less of them

Mammoth_Ad_5423 Mar 30, 2026 +1
A lack of communication skills. I know plenty of people who create their own problems by not communicating early and often. Once you see that in someone, respect goes out the window pretty fast. That also happens to be my least favorite trope in media and literature. If you can solve a character's major, plot-driving problems with one direct conversation and that conversation is never had for the sake of dragging on the plot, it's weak writing.
