What’s something that is a total rip-off, but people keep buying it anyway?

printer ink. it's literally more expensive than vintage champagne by the milliliter, and the cartridges are designed to claim they're "empty" while they still have plenty of life left. yet, we all keep clicking "buy now" because we need that one physical return label.

LilDutchy Apr 1, 2026 +57
I bought a color laser like 5 years ago and I’m still on the sample toner.
57
DarkIsiliel Apr 1, 2026 +15
Same! So much better and the printouts can be used in crafting since they aren't water-soluble.
15
bentnotbroken96 Apr 1, 2026 +7
My wife's a teacher, she buys toner once a year. Way better than the $500 she was spending on ink per year.
7
bh0 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Same. It just fu$\*#&%ing works immediately every time I turn it on. No calibrating, no complaining about ink, no dried out ink, replacing ink, etc.... No idea how long the trial toner is supposed to last, but I'm at like 2 years on the thing I think since I don't print much.

YoureSpecial Apr 1, 2026 +9
I have an Epson salt”Eco Tank” printer. My wife killed by printing prob. 20-25,000 sheets over a few years. I only bought additional ink twice during that entire time. To quote Shaq: it holds a ridiculous amount of ink.
9
IssueIvan Apr 1, 2026 +2
This. I have one too. You can see the ink measurement any time. Even the Epson refills are not that expensive.

jizzyjugsjohnson Apr 1, 2026 +7
Obligatory article link: https://www.theverge.com/tech/641940/best-printer-2025-just-buy-a-brother-laser-printer-middle-finger-in-the-air

_kvl_ Apr 1, 2026 +5
I got my parents to ditch their terrible Epson inkjet maybe a decade ago because I was doing phone support 2-3 times a month for that godforsaken device. I got them a brother laser printer that was on sale. In the 10 years I have 2 calls because the wifi printing wasn’t working, and both times it was because the laptop or iPad had gotten an OS update that for some reason reset the default printer. It was 6 years before they needed a second black cartridge instead of replacing the inkjet ones every 2-3 months (why they seem to use ink “cleaning the nozzle” every time you turn it on seems like scam to use more ink). Brother all the way.
5
jizzyjugsjohnson Apr 1, 2026 +2
The main thing is , as the article puts so well, you don’t have to constantly think about shitty f****** printers. You want to print something once in a while, or often, or whatever. Just print it.
2
ctong21 Apr 1, 2026 +6
A few years ago I had to refill ink on my printer. It was literally cheaper to buy a new printer with ink packaged in than buy new cartridges.
6
zabrakwith Apr 1, 2026 +3
I’ve been refilling my cartridges with ink for at least 10 years now. Can’t imagine how much I’ve saved.
3
Khs11 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Heat up a bowl of hot water in the microwave, not too hot, take it out and put a dried up ink cartridge in it. A tiny bit of ink might bleed out, but the hot water will rejuvenate the cartridge and you can use it again.
3
HyzerFlipDG Apr 1, 2026 +1
Not all of us. I have 3 photo quality printers for work and they all take refillable cartridges or off brand one carts that are less than $1 per piece.
1
levir Apr 1, 2026 +1
Laser (or realistically LED) printers are a great alternatives for documents, and ink tank printers are good if you need to print photos. There are good options out there.

Jesus and I heard England was expensive compared to America
2
TehOwn Apr 1, 2026 +10
If anything, our food (UK) is generally quite a bit cheaper but you guys (US) typically earn quite a bit more than we do.
10
Any_Sport3353 Apr 1, 2026 +3
No kidding, I have to do complex mathematics in my head when I look at UK or EU jobs. I feel like I’m getting stiffed but oh yeah healthcare good infrastructure public transit etc
3

Uk get paid low regardless in comparison to other first world countries with healthcare.
4

You’re not selling me on it
2
grumble11 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Outside of a few niche roles (ex: high finance or so on in London), the UK is in rough shape. Low wages, high costs.
3
BarryMcCoghener Apr 1, 2026 +9
Not to mention the coffee itself. It's absurdly easy to fix coffee, and immensely cheaper.
9
SpaceGangsta Apr 1, 2026 +9
My local coffee shop roasts their own and if you pay $30 for a branded mug it’s free drip coffee every day. I’ve gone basically every work day for almost 2 years. It’s way cheaper than buying and brewing at home. And every free coffee shrinks the cost. I’m like a nickel a cup at this point and it will only get cheaper.
9
xdonutx Apr 1, 2026 +9
It’s not about the coffee itself for me. It’s about feeling like I have something in my life that’s not just sheer drudgery.
9
LateralThinkerer Apr 1, 2026 +1
>about feeling like I have something in my life that’s not just sheer drudgery. This is the real answer and Starbucks' business model.
1
miregalpanic Apr 1, 2026 +23
People don't go to Starbucks to drink coffee, they go there to drink milkshakes that saw a coffee bean walk past once
23
plowerd Apr 1, 2026 +11
Hey dont get mad at my bean-curious hot chocolate.
11
cwx149 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Caramel fraps were the life blood of the Starbucks I worked at and they only have powdered coffee in them other than that it's just milk, ice, and syrup But Starbucks doesn't even really try to be a coffee shop that sells drip they really want you to buy espresso anyway
3
SnuggleBunni69 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Honestly, im pretty particular with my coffee, and I always prefer my own coffee to cafe stuff. Same with steak. It's really hard for me to find a steak better than my stepdads. Just never quite there.
2

Unless I am getting it because I am not home I generally get something I can't make at home easily
1
williamtbash Apr 1, 2026 +2
Also. Coffee shop coffee. $9 for a medium cold brew. I make a pot a day for pennies and toss the leftover in the fridge.
2
mailslot Apr 1, 2026 +1
Hey now, the shop I worked at reheated their frozen food in a convection oven / Turbo Chef.
1
md22mdrx Apr 1, 2026 +1
Usually all the food comes frozen and either is toasted or Chef Mike’d to temp … or just thawed in case of baked goods. Unless you can see them baking their baked goods, it probably started frozen from Sysco. That’s not saying that some of it can’t still be good.  I mean … one of my favorite things is an Asiago bagel egg, sausage, and cheese sandwich from a coffee shop.  All Sysco prepared exactly as you’d expect with a coffee place without an actual kitchen.  It’s delicious.
1
robotteeth Apr 1, 2026 +1
You mean fast food coffee shops like Starbucks. My local coffee shop makes their bread fresh every day for their toasts and has sourdough to die for.

"I am poor" "Have you tried gambling?" Solid
30
overitallofittoo Apr 1, 2026 +3
Have you tried gambling with the worst odds of any gambling? That might work.
3
StonkaTrucks Apr 1, 2026 +6
I gamble in the stock market, since there is a small chance I can be good enough to make money at it.
6
jamatosoup Apr 1, 2026 +4
Literally saw a commercial yesterday that asked “do you need money?” It was for a s**** app, saying they’ll give you $$ to start playing with. I’ll guess it’s programmed to win something small but decent, encouraging you to keep going to WIN BIG. Then you’ll *really* need money.
4
Riker_Omega_Three Apr 1, 2026 +17
I play when it gets to a certain threshold of money It's 5 bucks. Worth it to have a chance for hundreds of millions of dollars But I don't play every week or anything like that
17
jonasshoop Apr 1, 2026 +6
It's really not worth it because the odds are so low. I still buy them occasionally, because when I buy a l****** ticket because when I'm daydreaming about what I would do if I won the l****** it feels more real if I have an actual ticket.
6
btribble Apr 1, 2026 +7
A l****** ticket is like a movie ticket. It has a certain amount of entertainment value to the buyer. If you want to look down on l****** ticket buyers for wasting money on entertainment, then you should look down on movie goers as well.
7
cwx149 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I mean it is a scam in some other less obvious ways too like in a lot of states the l****** is ostensibly funding some government project or spending but it doesn't always fund what it really is "supposed" to be funding iirc
1
Microfiber13 Apr 1, 2026 +1
That’s the dream tax. 5 bucks on a roadtrip and you have several hours of fun conversations about what you would do with the money.
1
Can-DontAttitude Apr 1, 2026 +1
Just use moderation... If you don't play, odds of winning are zero. Buy one ticket, and you get non-zero odds for prize money. Buying 20 tickets vs 1 ticket doesn't substantially improve your odds, they're still very slim. But that cash could've bought you groceries. This is where we get into "idiot tax" territory.
1
Far-Obligation4055 Apr 1, 2026 +2
>If you don't play, odds of winning are zero. The odds of losing and wasting $5 are also zero.
2
Fubared259 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I play l****** but don't expect to win. No state income tax so this is how I help the state lmao

Closing costs. Why the f*** does it cost thousands of dollars to sign some papers.
97
sassy_immigrant Apr 1, 2026 +8
Especially, title insurance that no one uses for very variable paperwork usually found in the county.
8
DigNitty Apr 1, 2026 +31
Title insurance actually saved me a bunch of money. 6 months after I bought the place, some law firm from another city sent a letter saying their client has a lien/claim to part of the building. There was some weird transactions that were poorly recorded 40 years ago. I sent it to my realtor and a lawyer and the initial reaction was no one was sure if the claim was valid or not. Wasn’t clear. Realtor sent it to the title insurance company on my behalf and they called me and said I’m not liable regardless and they’ll handle it from there. Like a month later I got a letter saying they settled and the other person got paid $12000.
31
emtheory09 Apr 1, 2026 +5
You’d never get away from all closing costs. The workers processing your mortgage, underwriting the loan, funding it out to the seller all need to get paid. There’s definitely some profit stacked in there, but it’s mostly paying the workers.

A couple dollars cheaper AND higher quality. Same with clothes, the quality of most women’s clothes is absolute garbage. For things like hoodies I shop the men’s section, half the price and the quality is so much better. Women’s hoodies are usually a thinner material, too, and I never would have known this if I didn’t start shopping the men’s section!

The best of this was one outlets like the Dailey Wire were selling non-woke versions of products. Selling crappier more expensive versions of products because the main brand had a commercial with a rainbow in it or whatever. Eh, they're just separating morons from their money so it's hard to be mad at them. Maybe I wish I'd thought of it first.

Yup. Price, probable carcinogens (microplastics from shitty quality bottles). Only exception to this is in an area where the tap water tastes like shit and/or is actively harmful to you, then your options are pretty limited. I live in a city where the tap water is very drinkable; I think the last time I bought any bottled water was over a decade ago.

1
RolyPoly1320 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Shelving, shirts, even PC components. Unless the different color also comes with additional functionality, the different pricing is very arbitrary. White PC components tend to be more expensive than black when they are otherwise the same exact item. I've seen shelves with different prices. It'd be like 50 bucks for a normal wood finish and like 75 bucks for blue. Same materials used, PCB, but the finish is just a different color. No additional features to them.

7
levir Apr 1, 2026 +2
On average, you pay more for extended warrenties that you get back. If you can afford to replace it if it breaks, it will usually be better not to take an extended warrenty. But if you need something and cannot afford replacing it if it breaks, insurance or extended warranty may be worth it.
2
holyhibachi Apr 1, 2026 +2
I do also work in service and I can tell you these extended warranty companies pay out a shitload of claims. I'm not positive how much they cost, though.
2
Moooney Apr 1, 2026 +3
Thee fact that the car dealerships (and others) push the extended warranties so hard is because they are huge moneymakers. The only way they can be huge moneymakers is by paying out way less then they take in.
3
holyhibachi Apr 1, 2026 +2
They're money makers for the dealership for sure because they aren't the company that underwrites the policy. I'm also part of the dealership and I work as hard as I can to rake these extended warranty companies for every penny they're worth under their policy. Those things are unrelated
2
AMJET8 Apr 1, 2026 +6
I have bought extended warranty’s for both cars. The work that was needed covered more than twice what each cost. Definitely worth the money in my situation
6
Crunchycarrots79 Apr 1, 2026 +2
On a car, it depends on who's offering the warranty among other factors. 3rd party extended warranties are almost always pure garbage. Either they won't cover most things, or their reimbursement rates are so low that the only shops that will accept them are the shops you definitely don't want to take your car to. Extended warranties offered by the manufacturer, either directly or through a vetted 3rd party are usually fine, and sometimes they're a really good idea.
2
Specific-Stomach-195 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Extended warranties aren’t just for cars of course. The profit margin on these are incredibly high though, regardless of the product.

Cash for Clunkers kinda screwed up the used car market for a while, too, since all those qualifying cars had to be destroyed, not resold. Over half a million cars instantly removed from the used car market in a single year.

Dunking Doughnuts coffee daily. My brother in law and his wife are broke as f**k. But they keep buying these extra large coffees and drinks. Half the time they're half empty and probably end up throwing it away.

Their coffee is actually c**** compared to most places that aren’t McDonald’s.

Oreos are actually a ripoff of a now gone cookie brand called Hydrox.

JockoV Apr 1, 2026 +1
Hydrox was actually first. Oreo came out 4 years later. I was appalled when I learned that fact and now it's your turn to be appalled 😧

Branded over the counter meds. Wal-Mart brand is literally the exact same thing. Not touting the Wal-Mart overlords but just saying…

Electronic pest repellents. They advertise them as working for everything from bugs to squirrels in your attic. They do the same thing for all pests - nothing

Any "random prize" Doesn't matter if its Pokémon cards or Labubu or loot crates. If you have to buy 100 packs you dont want to find the thing you want, its a ripoff.

Cleaning wipes for counters and tubs. Instead of using a vleaning cloth and mixing spray, we pay quite a bit for presoaked wipes.

Coffee drinks. I just keep cold coffee in the fridge, along with a jug of sweet cream. Not only cheaper, but better tasting.
