Growing up

I thought I’d have a cool car and a secret base by now. Instead, I just have a favorite burner on the stove and a back that makes a 'crunch' sound when I sneeze.

avalonfaith Mar 30, 2026 +9
Woah. Has a turthier truth ever been spoken?
9
Bittersweet_Aura666 Mar 30, 2026 +8
It’s my new superpower. I don’t even need a weather app anymore; my knees tell me when it’s going to rain 12 hours in advance.

screamofwheat Mar 30, 2026 +3
Same with my migraines.

PAXICHEN Mar 30, 2026 +3
I thought I was the only one with a favorite burner.

EasyRow5606 Mar 30, 2026 +3
What more could you want out off life apart from the back issue...

BeastModeSupreme Mar 30, 2026 +1
A cool car and secret base is still cool. You and me both just cant afford them. Lol. Hang in there man and dont sneeze!

The audacity of every adult who told us to enjoy being a kid. They knew. They all knew.
31
Elodie_Zmei Mar 30, 2026 +11
To not worry about how to manage your life plus the degrading system of your country oh how I'd do anything to have a good night sleep just worrying about what game I'll play with my friends tomorrow 😭😭😭
11
ExplanationUnique84 Mar 30, 2026 +6
Seriously. I'm struggling to remember to take my multivitamin- growing up into an "adult" has taught me that no one knows what they're doing. I'm in my early thirties.
6
CommonSmall1951 Mar 30, 2026 +4
Yeah i thought so
4
gravy_boat991 Mar 30, 2026 +6
Yup, I always thought adulting is fun not until responsibilities came in
6

thought the same thing until i saw your comment

Spending money carelessly
82
bellybutterflyy Mar 30, 2026 +9
This. I thought burning cash was fun until reality hit. Bills, responsibilities and realizing your “fun money” disappears faster than you notice.

Eastern_Type_4609 Mar 30, 2026 +7
The worst part is you can pinpoint the exact purchase where it all went wrong. Mine was a $400 jacket I wore twice.
7
BeggarsCanyonero Mar 30, 2026 +3
Mine was a weekend trip that could just as easily *not* have cost $1,000

Brand name clothes.
51
ddesla2 Mar 30, 2026 +14
I'd amend to say brand named clothes that are meh or shit quality. There are some brand names out there that make quality clothing that lasts a long time and I'm here for that. Comfortable af and lasts forever? Count me in baby.
14
passthemarinaras Mar 30, 2026 +5
This!!! I think wearing brand names and Logos is sooooo tacky. You’re literally a billboard and there’s nothing interesting about your clothes except for the brand. This also includes designer.

Smoking cigarettes.

Not gonna lie, I still love the odd cig after drinking or on a chill morning
22

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) conducted a recent study and both independently came to the conclusion that drunk smokes don't count. Source: trust me, bro

MrOatButtBottom Mar 30, 2026 +1
I'm going to trust you because I want it to be true.
1
PAXICHEN Mar 30, 2026 +3
I can’t in the morning. But I’ll have maybe 10 cigarettes a year - 9 of them tied to social drinking.
3
cutshop Mar 30, 2026 +1
Usually when I'm out camping. Coffee and cig in the woods is nostalgic, like pouring one out for the homies

really glad i was a bit of a contrarian back then and thought smoking is bad uncool when everyone started doing it

Someone told me when I was a teenager that if you quit by the time you’re 30, your body can fully heal from it. Fingers crossed.

Then_Consequence5245 Mar 30, 2026 +140
Staying up all night playing video games. Used to think I was some kind of legend pulling all-nighters in high school, bragging about getting 2 hours of sleep before a test. Now I'm 32 and if I don't get my 7-8 hours I'm basically a zombie at work the next day, can barely troubleshoot basic network issues without wanting to throw my laptop out the window. My body just doesn't bounce back like it used to and honestly sleep feels way better than beating another boss at 3am
140
Eastern_Type_4609 Mar 30, 2026 +33
Sleep went from punishment to reward and I didn't even notice when it happened.
33
yeetgodmcnechass Mar 30, 2026 +16
I love sleep and I still love to game, I just wish I had time in the day to game and have enough sleep to function the next day. My body usually makes the choice of sleep for me
16
PAXICHEN Mar 30, 2026 +3
Strangely, in high school if I wasn’t asleep by 10pm I was worthless the next day. This is the late 1980s before internet and social media.
3
I_Am_Stoeptegel Mar 30, 2026 +1
In high school I couldn’t go less than 9 hours of sleep. Now my sleep requirement is so high that whether I sleep 5 of 9 hours, I’ll wake up tired regardless
1
derKonigsten Mar 30, 2026 +2
I'm 36 and I'm about to beat another boss at 3am and I couldn't agree more. Don't have to work until 4pm but have some weekly homework I keep telling myself I'll get done before work but it rarely happens and I hate myself for it. Then I end up doing my homework when I get home at 11pm and end up staying up until 4-5am anyways again every night. I hate it. My girlfriend hates it. It's hard to change.
2
AnotherLexMan Mar 30, 2026 +1
Playing video games in general.  I'm so tired most of the time I just can't be bothered.
1
cheque Mar 30, 2026 +1
When I was 15-16 I’d stay up all night playing the guitar once or twice a week. If you play a solid-bodied electric guitar unplugged you can hear what you’re playing fine but it’s very quiet. My bedroom was downstairs too so there was no way my parents or sister would be disturbed by it. I wouldn’t intend to stay up *all* night, I’d just keep playing and before I knew it it would be too late to bother going to sleep. When my alarm went off I’d put my dressing gown on and wander upstairs to have a shower rubbing my eyes and saying good morning to my Mum. I don’t remember school being too hard the day after and I passed my exams. 30 years later I can still play the guitar pretty well no matter how long I go without playing for. But if I get less than 7 hours sleep I’m bloody useless the next day… I still naturally gravitate towards that night owl behaviour but whatever I do instead of sleeping it’s just not worth it! I’m grateful to teenage me for being so diligent at practicing and still think it’s a pretty cool thing for a teenager to do.

I tried to fit in with all my classmates. So wearing "brand" clothes. Baggy Pants, "OG Gear" hoodies, Dickies pants etc. I've seen old photos recently...jfc I looked like a f****** clown. (I mean it was 25 years ago). After my Hiphop phase I started listening to metal. Only black clothes, so brands weren't a thing anymore lol

war and military in general
13
T1nyJazzHands Mar 30, 2026 +4
I don’t live in a country where the military is glorified. Toy guns and soldiers are a rare sight. The rare times I’ve seen an army ad campaign in my country it’s focused on stuff like providing disaster and emergency aid. I only really understood “wow military cool badass” was a genuine thing in some places (esp USA) once I hit adulthood.

Disturbed. The band. I deadass found out last year in my late 20s that the frontman is a literal Nazi who *autographed bombs* that were used to kill children. My naive dumb ass assumed that because he wrote a song called "Never Again" about how fucked up the Holocaust was that he would never do anything like that... I listened to them since I was 11. I was in their top 0.01%-0.1% of listeners over several platforms for *years.* More than a decade of my taste in music out the damn window. :(
45
MissionReasonable714 Mar 30, 2026 +26
That was Lostprophets for me. That music got me through a lot in my late teens and early 20s. There were a few punk rock lullabies that were awesome. And then the lead singer, Ian Watkins, went to prison for r\*\*\*\*g an infant. It really messed me up. (I'm pleased to report that he was murdered by a fellow inmate late last year.)

Dude, for real?!?! I loved both these bands back in the day but have since moved to other categories of music and stopped following news about them but still remembered the music fondly. Why are some people such garbage?
4
MissionReasonable714 Mar 30, 2026 +2
I don't know. I remember looking at a picture of him at one point, I think I was like 17 (so 2007?), and realizing that he wasn't a good person. It's in the eyes. I didn't understand at the time, but now unfortunately, (or maybe fortunately at this point) I know I'm good at spotting that kind of darkness in people. :( [https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c051nye9q9mo](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c051nye9q9mo)

"My naive dumb ass assumed that because he wrote a song called "Never Again" about how fucked up the Holocaust was that he would never do anything like that..." It sadly turns out that for some people, "never again" only means never again to their group, other groups of people getting genocided is absolutely fine.

A 14 year old boy dating a 20 year old woman. Literally there was just a post like this on listnook today and one guy was adamant it was totally ok, in fact, high fives all around sort of thing. My buddy dated a 23yo woman when he was 15. Yeah i admit we thought it was great but goddamn, all of us realised it was wrong by the time we were 17-18. He was messed up over it as well. Said he would never even look at high school kids as a 23yo much less go out of his way to chat one up. So fucked up. And yes people would go crazy if genders are reversed

Shaving. I (36F) was never allowed to shave my armpits or my legs while I lived at home. I grew up in an ultra-conservative anti-modernist religious household and it was seen as vain. I was obsessed with it to the point that I stole my dad's beard razor and tried it out, and of course knicked myself a million times. Lol. Turns out, I don't like the way shaved armpits feel and after developing some self-confidence, stopped altogether. I haven't shaved in about 15 years. My partner loves it.

17
yeetgodmcnechass Mar 30, 2026 +2
I'm about to experience that for the first time likely in about a month's time as my roommate is finalizing the process of buying a home for himself and his brother. I'll probably enjoy it at first just being able to do whatever I please without having to work around someone else's presence but I'm sure the loneliness and intrusive thoughts will start to creep in not too long after especially this year as so much of my social network has collapsed. It'll also suck because he's for the most part been a good roommate and I'll miss having someone to speak to in person semi-regularly If this had happened a year or so ago I'd be in a much better position to live alone mentally
2
ObiWangCannabis Mar 30, 2026 +1
Are you kidding? Living alone is the best! I'm currently naked at the computer, I made my breakfast naked. I hopped out of bed and strolled out to the kitchen. Good luck doing that living with someone else.

Yeah when you realise they're absolute debt traps if not handled with EXTREME caution, it makes you a lot less interested in getting one. I didn't get my first CC until I was 20 just for the sake of building credit score. Never paid late, I only buy using it for the Customer Protections it provides over Debit at this point.

USA - seemed like an awesome place and fantised about going to school there and living there. Then as I got older realising how different the schooling is and how devided toxic and how rife with bullying behaviour they are and argued that that behaviour is normal (I went to what was regarded as one of the worst schools in England and it still seemed better) Then knowing that as an adult with diabetes I'd be on a constant struggle to make sure I could work and worse be stuck in a job I hated. In England I've jumped out of jobs if I didn't like them knowing I could just find another one with out any concern to impact to my health. USA seems like a beautiful country and people are friendly, yet somehow the country became broken.
2
VoL4t1l3 Mar 30, 2026 +1
why do you think kids shoot up schools so much
1
RipCurl69Reddit Mar 30, 2026 +1
Ugh, get ready for a long one. Story time :D England here as well. My girlfriend has a penpal out in the US who we flew out to see last year over the 4th of July celebrations before she got shipped off to Army basic training. Had a great time and the folks (in Ohio at least) were lovely, but we had a huge issue with her job being vindictive for no reason other than, "we can, deal with it." Kroger, specifically. Not a career job, but still a job. First day of the trip, she was the one who came to pick us up from the airport. Easy 2hr drive. We're all 20, but the rental places wouldn't accept anyone under 25 so we COULDN'T drive over there lol. She'd put in that she was going to be doing a half-shift that day *six months in advance* because I booked our stuff in January and told her to tell her managers ASAP so they weren't getting screwed over. They approved and said yes, I thought that was sorted. (to compare it to my own arrangements, we get schedules quarterly and if you put Leave in prior to that 13-week schedule being approved by both you, the manager and a schedule rep, it CANNOT be denied as an internal policy without an insanely good reason. So we're commonly putting leave in crazy amounts of time in advance. I'm used to this, and I kept that mindset with her Kroger because I thought it would be at least appropriate if not appreciated) Cut to maybe two days before we fly out and they come to her, "yeah we need you in the whole day, no we don't care that you've got people travelling across an ocean relying on you to pick them up, we have others available but we want you in." In short, she said screw it and worked the approved half-shift. Left at lunch to come grab us. We were grateful and I told her to forward her managers my contact info if they wanted to moan, I'd set the record straight. Anyway, they also ended up calling her in on the 4th of July, *the morning of*, we were halfway through the parade through the town we were in and she's like "yeah, I'm going in from noon and I'll be finished by 6. Then we can do something." and because she'd unofficially ditched on our first day, despite having approval, she wanted to make up for it somewhat. We had an entire day planned. Safe to say I was on the verge of imploding and was about to storm down there. She practically forced her manager to ring *me* and I told the dude he was totally out of line, if he was hellbent on messing her around that *I'd* cover her wages and they could skip paying those days entirely if they didn't think she was being generous enough with her time for them. But we did go around with her family instead, who were understanding. They were also super supportive of us all during this. And had the evening as planned. She hadn't booked the entire ~10 days we were out there as leave, she had a few shifts scattered in and around days we weren't planning to do much. But they wanted more, and more, right up to calling on the morning of the biggest national holiday?! It's insane. Anyway, not only did we visit Kroger multiple times as patrons (I know I racked up a bill of at least $90 stocking up on groceries for the week and a half we were out there) but I was just...BAFFLED at the cheek to pull last minute changes and act like it wasn't a problem of their own doing. Funnily enough, the day after we left she got sacked from that job, they cited the first day that she pulled a half-shift to come grab us. I think it was part deliberate retaliation against us three, and because she was quitting in September for the Army anyway, but she cut her losses and was ultimately glad to be out of there. Now, I don't care for any arguments about how, "if that's in her contract, thEy CaN jUsT Do ThAt." Even if they can, it is BEYOND toxic, and infuriating to witness as an outsider. It is NOT normal, anyone who's gonna try and justify it to me; turn heel and don't bother. And on top of that, in the run up to Army basic they would schedule her shifts that DIRECTLY clashed with her Drills sessions, and that's *straight up illegal* under US law. I practically begged her to report it to her local Army office, but she didn't want the stress. We ended up having a fair chunk of spending money in cash left over before flying back, something like $800 worth between me and my gf. We gave her it just because we'd already budgeted as if it would all be spent, and she'd paid for a few of our expenses during the trip, so I played it off like we were covering it back... I am SO GLAD we did that, because that 800 bucks pretty much got her through from July to September without any financial issues, you know, considering she didn't have a bloody job in the interim. So yeah, the US, at least with regards to employment, sounds genuinely *hellish* and I'm so glad I don't have to deal with it. Our little experience was more than enough for me.

The thrill is well and truly gone when 90% is bills and the rest is direct marketing.

Staying up as late as possible. As a kid it felt like a superpower. Now I’d pay actual money for an extra hour of sleep.

Being an adult. Kid me thought it meant freedom. Adult me found out it mostly means emails, back pain, and deciding what to eat every day until I die.

having sex. when i was like 13 all the guys my age thought you werent cool unless you were having sex ALL the time. when i hit about 28 it hit me all at once. an old fortune teller told me i was lord voldemort 🤣 she said think about how many times you have had sex with a different person. each time you do it you split your soul like a horcrux. that made me start thinking about it lol but in reality i realized i wasnt even looking at women as women. i was looking at them as numbers and status

Staying up until 4am gaming thinking I was built different. Bragged about it constantly in school. Now I miss one hour of sleep and my whole week is wrecked lol. The older you get the more sleep becomes genuinely aspirational.

Grown-ups. I hate every adult that raised me, and I was surrounded by. Grown-ups are no better than children, and I didn't even like most children.

Driving. Well I still like it, but mostly I now drive to run errands and go to work. When I was young I drove friends houses and to go to parties and clubs.

Smoking. I took it up much too young putting myself in a position that to quit today would mean losing my job and likely my place to live. Don't just don't start smoking.

Thinking I was cool. Everyone that's young and thinks they're smarter and cooler will eventually age and go through the process of not being young and made fun of by the younger generations.

buying clothes from specific stores like armani exchange etc during high school. blew all my money from working 44 hours a week at a pizza shop on clothes that are rotting in a landfill somewhere today. So dumb but i swore i was the shit

Being “not like other girls”. I have grace for that version of myself, because she thought being a Pick Me would keep her safe, but wooooof that was a lesson hard-learned in my 30s.

I thought being grown up would be awesome — freedom, no bedtime. Now I realize it’s just being tired 24/7, paying taxes, and still going to bed at 10 PM because I’m exhausted. Adulting is a scam

Staying up all night. As a kid, it was the ultimate act of rebellion and freedom. As an adult, it’s just a $50 subscription to a migraine and a ruined following Tuesday.
