Greed and vanity mostly.

Different_Dish_819 Apr 1, 2026 +390
I’d venture to say greed and ego. Some greed is caused directly by ego.

sleyvinkalevra Apr 1, 2026 +69
Is greed in our DNA or a surviving mechanism
69
ashoka_akira Apr 1, 2026 +46
resource hoarding is, its a common survival method practiced by many species
46
WigwamTheMighty Apr 1, 2026 +207
I dont think its in our DNA. Anthropology has studied people in remote areas and they trend towards altruism. The greed comes from hundreds of years of capitalism. Sure, people were greedy before capitalism, lack of resources was always a problem from day 1. But profit seeking has not always existed. People are encouraged to exploit others for their basic needs in order to turn a profit. The wealthy use the police as a standing army to enforce their desires with violence. These are engineered systems in order to keep you poor, so that you will relinquish control to others.

WanderingTacoShop Apr 1, 2026 +43
I think the answer is more complex, Tribalism seems to be coded into us by evolution. Altruism towards the in-group, hostility towards any out-groups. That would track on what you mentioned about remote populations, that is the in-group.
43
phreesh2525 Apr 1, 2026 +44
No offence, but conflict and war predates capitalism by a few thousand years.
44
Heyoka_Hobo Apr 1, 2026 +9
Millions of years. The entire ecosystem is built on murder for resources, starting with feeding and extending into the economics of geopolitics, killing and destruction feeding the next generation.
9
hmgg Apr 1, 2026 +41
leave it to listnookors to blame capitalism for all existing ills of the world. Humans (and most other animals) have fought and killed each other since the dawn of time. It is in fact deep in our nature. One can argue that at this point we should be evolved beyond this and it's sad that we're not. But to suggest that Capitalism is the reason we don't live peacefully is just insane.
41
BalanceJazzlike5116 Apr 1, 2026 +10
People have been waging wars long before the current capitalist system.
10
Magica78 Apr 1, 2026 +18
We've observed chimpanzee war bands where they will r*** and murder other chimpanzee groups and take their stuff. Go ahead and tell me that's capitalism.
18
InfiniteWaffles58364 Apr 1, 2026 +5
Sounds like vulture capitalism, which is weird cuz they're chimps
5
Pookieeatworld Apr 1, 2026 +24
I would argue the opposite, though I'd love to be proven wrong. As infants/toddlers, the moment we have the ability to possess something, we don't want to give it up. As organisms we tend to think of anything we can possess as a tool for survival. It's better to have things you can use if you have to fight someone than to not have them. We have to be taught to share. And unfortunately some people never grow out of the toddler phase in this regard.
24
Aurori_Swe Apr 1, 2026 +8
My kids are living this experiment right now, if one kid has something the other has to have it, not something LIKE it, but exactly IT. If they get it though they only use it to taunt the other with the fact that they now have it, they don't play with it, just know that the fact that they have it and the other doesn't will make the other jealous. Constant fights
8
Beneficial-Focus3702 Apr 1, 2026 +7
Individual greed is counter to species survival.

49
Intrepid-Entrance460 Apr 1, 2026 +18
One might argue that religion is under the tribalism umbrella. It's just one of many ways to demonize "the other."

"They have a resource and I want / need it" This is actually how most wars are really started

Exactly. Does anybody here want to live on $18,000 a year? That's the world average.

Humans
291
SmartAlec105 Apr 1, 2026 +26
Well *my* humans are fine. It’s those *other* humans that are causing all the problems. If we could just get rid of them somehow, then there’d be no humans stopping us from living in peace.

Human nature. Violence is always an option because of it.
57
demonseed-elite Apr 1, 2026 +12
Exactly why I'm upvoting this. Aggression, greed, violence are all part of our "core mental programming". They are our base instincts. They're cooked into our genetics and our mental development. Those parts of us can be suppressed but never eradicated. The only true fix would be re-engineering ourselves, and that would arguably no longer make us "human".
12
RazeYi Apr 1, 2026 +8
The problems are not the treats itself. It's the fact that we think in groups but not as in species. We have rich, black, genders, sexualities, poor etc. We don't see ourselves as just humans.
8
plains_of_mengedda Apr 1, 2026 +7
"human nature" is a copout. If human nature was inherently violent and greedy and awful we wouldn't have survived hundreds of thousands of years. Human behavior is influenced by material conditions.
7
matlynar Apr 1, 2026 +2
Yeah, if you think about, modern society makes us resort *less and less* to violence. But it's still there.
2
karmagod13000 Apr 1, 2026 +9
As simple as this answer is its the truth and the bigger truth is that humans by nature are actually really violent creatures and without rules and laws this world would be a very scary place.

Thirst for power
76
joseph4th Apr 1, 2026 +4
“No no no, it not power I want. You just don’t understand. I have it all figured out and if you just do it MY WAY you’ll see!” That and a touch of: “Those people are subhuman and don’t deserve anything.”
4
ItsNotMe_ImNotHere Apr 1, 2026 +2
I don't know whether it is power or ego but I do believe it is a very small minority of people who cause this. I live in a country that is currently at peace and I don't see any organized movement to change that. We are though, fearful of external threats. So, the question is: what does it take to disrupt the peaceful status quo? I believe it is either the external threat being realized or an individual who is power-happy or ego obsessed provoking a vulnerable group. The former we can do nothing about except react defensively. The latter always starts with one individual - a Hitler or a Trump. (I make no apology for equating these 2 megalomaniacs) The only solution I can think of is education such that these individuals are recognized early and their influence prevented.

As strange as this may sound, we're a little too successful as a species. The only real predator we have is each other. Maybe it's just nature's way of balancing things out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Scenario: 100 people in a tribe (microcosm of a country). 1 person in the tribe hoards all the food and water and hires guards to keep others from accessing it so they can control the distribution on their terms. Shit like this is why we have wars and why we will always have wars. 95% of people are decent, but the 5% f*** it all up for everyone.

Risherak Apr 1, 2026 +5
I'd assume unmet needs within the context of Maslow's hierarchy in our current societal constructs. Unmet phisiological needs > violence Unmet safety needs > violence Unmet social needs > violence Unmet esteem needs > violence Inability to self-actualize > violence To top it all off, we generalize, have bias, and fear the needs we have met being taken from us.

Religion.
110
ozymandieus Apr 1, 2026 +30
Religion was always just one of multiple pretenses used an excuse for the wealthy and powerful to become more wealthy and powerful. Throughout history religion has been a dominant one, but look at Hitlers thirst for power, the Nazi ideology is religious in nature, a chosen people who are better than others, eugenics and dehumanisation. Now the biggest force for evil in the world is capitalism and imperialism, extermination of the poor, those who are different, weaker, have their rights stripped and lands seized. Sometimes its said to be for religion, sometimes its said to make a country great again. Putin isn't religious, but he is vain and greedy. Trump is vain and greedy, and pretends to be religious but even his followers know he's not. Epstein and his cohorts, all of different religions and backgrounds, but all of their disgusting behaviour can be boiled down to: I am powerful, I am special and everyone should serve me.

The more everyone succeeds in working together, the higher the incentive for some assholes to take advantage of everyone else, so we naturally form an equilibrium where like 10% of people are absolute pieces of shit.
6
lonster1961 Apr 1, 2026 +5
It’s not in the nature of our species. My favorite author said it best as; “the average human is nothing more than a monkey that has learned to wear clothes, walk upright, and not shit on the floor “. Not a 100% accurate but in my 65 years of being on this planet, I would say he is being generous.

Tribalism The definition: "Tribalism is a strong, often subconscious, tendency to identify with, prioritize, and show unwavering loyalty to a specific group—such as a political party, culture, or team—over outsiders. It is rooted in human evolution for safety and belonging, but it can fuel intense polarization, conformity, and "us-versus-them" mentality."

3
Thick_Caterpillar379 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Peace is not a natural default but an active construct that requires individuals to consistently prioritize the collective good over personal gain and tribal instincts. Achieving this is hindered by the "free rider" problem and resource competition, which erode the mutual trust necessary to maintain a social contract. Ultimately, the challenge lies in the immense effort required to manage conflicting moral values and systemic inequalities through a shared set of civil duties.

What a great question. We're loving, jealous, caring, nasty, beautiful, ugly, weird, "normal", angry people but we should be able to make it work. I've tried to be a good person but there are just some people out there who have such a huge barrier around them, it's impossible to find the good. I guess that's what it is. Lol humans are too complex will never happen certain people will always create drama no matter what if it got too peaceful they would be upset with how peaceful you are? unhappy people will never not be unhappy people they think only if this thing changes but even when that thing changes their miserable brain goes right to the new thing that makes them unhappy. Peace and happiness are a choice and most never realize that

Greed. There’s enough for everyone’s need, but not everyone’s greed. As long as someone wants more than their fair share, peace is impossible

Some people can barely put on pants. Others discover the secrets to the universe. Our perception and depth to understanding will forever pose the challenge.

You have stuff. I want it. I have stuff. You want it. Sometimes, I want your stuff and you won’t give it to me. Sometimes, I want it so bad that I’m willing to hurt you and take it. I have beliefs. You have beliefs. Sometimes your beliefs are that my beliefs are wrong. Sometimes you believe that my beliefs are so wrong, they can’t be allowed to exist. You have a group. I have a group. Sometimes my group doesn’t like people in your group. Sometimes my group doesn’t like people in your group so much that we’re willing to hurt the people in your group.

Humans are animals just like the rest of the animal kingdom. We've evolved, since life began, to compete for resources etc. That's a lot of instinct and behavior to go against. It's like saying "why don't lions all live together peacefully?"

I think it is genetic. Each species (from tiny amoebas and protozoos to humans), compete, battle and sometimes eat others as survival mechanisms. It is how the universe works. We don't need to agree but it has been like that since the beginning. Even galaxies devours another galaxies..
