Listnook moderators can “lock” a particular post if they find it too controversial. This is done as an alternative to taking the post down entirely since locking the post leaves it up but without the ability to post additional comments

it's a sign that the thread is locked, usually means no more comments can be made. it can happen for a bunch of reasons, like the discussion getting out of hand or the mods wanting to keep it contained.
