What’s the best movie you’ve ever seen?

Posted by Soft_Piglet_7508

Personally, I think it’s ‘Interstellar’ but I’m open-minded. I watched that movie years ago and it’s still one I think about CONSTANTLY. I even listen to the soundtrack because it’s arguably one of the best in movie history. Anyway, let me know what you think!

If you like interstellar, you should check out Arrival

And Project Hail Mary! I can’t wait to rewatch that one

I went to the theater to see it a second time this afternoon!

You're thinking of Contact which is also great.

Go in blind. No trailers/teaser. IMO I like it even better than Interstellar.

ICanOnlySayNothing Mar 29, 2026 +10
They're both incredible Sci-Fi films, but other than the genre, they're completely different
10
PigSlam Mar 29, 2026 +15
They both hit harder if you’re a parent. I saw them both before and then after becoming a parent. Arrival is way more interesting in the way it’s mind bending in my opinion.

Rdbjiy53wsvjo7 Mar 29, 2026 +4
I LOOOOVE sci-fi, it's my jam for books, TV, and media. My youngest was going to start daycare when Arrival came out, and the first week she was testing it out so I only had her at home half the day with me. So what's a mom to do with new found freedom?!? Go see Arrival all by myself in theater after dropping her off at daycare! I was a hot mess lol

The first time I watched Arrival, it blew my mind. Such a genius story.

I saw the two towers in theaters, I was 11 I think when it came out and I used to think that type of stuff was corny but man the battle of helms deep changed my mind real quick.
9
historymysterygift Mar 30, 2026 +2
Came here to write this. Even after over 20 years, this trilogy still holds up really well.

I have a handful of films that all tie for best picture in my heart: Amadeus, Master and Commander, Empire of the Sun, Never Cry Wolf, Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), Ill Postino. Out of all those, probably Amadeus is at the top. It’s just a beautiful, sad, funny, interesting story.
35
eirikirs Mar 29, 2026 +16
Amadeus is worth the watch even just for the ridiculous laugh of Mozart 😆
16
DonAmechesBonerToe Mar 29, 2026 +3
Il Postino was awesome
3
Teal-Prowler505 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Never cry wolf was a film my dad took me to when I was in elementary school. It we the movie that made me love the scientific method. I miss my dad every day. Thanks fur reminding me of a special moment from a long time ago
2
Rough_Idle Mar 30, 2026 +2
I saw Never Cry Wolf when I was little, like seven or eight. It was the first time a serious film held me. Still does

The Matrix. I can still remember just how mind blowing it was! A few months later it came out on DVD so I got my first DVD player and DVD!!

Hands down Jurassic Park. I saw it fairly young and in theatres. There was nothing like it at the time. The raptor scene was by far the scariest thing I had ever witnessed and I’ll easily sit and watch it again and again. Hold on to your butts is in my vernacular.
16
Phoenixfeder79 Mar 29, 2026 +9
So many great movies out there - it’s hard to pick just one, but I’ll give my vote to “Back to the Future”

archiekane Mar 29, 2026 +7
There are really too many to choose from. Depending on whether it's ethics, action, drama, horror, etc. The movie that impacted me most in life as a late teen was American History X. As a man going through life and watching at different stages: Fight Club. Outright British humour and story telling: Snatch Drug abuse: Train Spotting Martial Arts + Mob based: Danny the Dog (Unleashed). 90s based absurdity horror: Shaun of the Dead Comedy Horror: Trailer Park of Terrors. Sci-Fi Horror: Event Horizon I don't think there can be one film that is just "the best".
7
IamWutzgood Mar 30, 2026 +3
I’ve seen snatch hundreds of times and still never get bored of it.

interstellar is a classic, for sure. i’d throw in inception in the mix too, that one sticks with you long after the credits roll.
18
BigSmackisBack Mar 29, 2026 +3
I wanted to say inception but didnt want come across as a Nolan fanboi, but its definitely way high up on my list too. The Martian, blade runner, matrix, total recall (arnie version) all top movies on sliding scales of realism vs fiction vs entertainment. Movies like that pop up and im 100% watching.
3
checkyminus Mar 29, 2026 +5
I really love Hook and the Fifth Element.
5
FScrotFitzgerald Mar 29, 2026 +10
Burn After Reading. Will never say no to watching it. I was also very taken with The Holdovers, but only because it's pretty much my parallel universe autobiography.
10
tgwombat Mar 29, 2026 +2
Burn After Reading has one of my absolute favorite endings of any movie.
2
FScrotFitzgerald Mar 29, 2026 +4
JK Simmons is so great in it.
4
arvidsem Mar 30, 2026 +2
I had honestly soured on the movie because everyone in it had just crossed the line into too dumb and pointless. Then J. K. Simmons came in and turned it around.
2
RegalReturn Mar 29, 2026 +7
Memento. It's just a masterpiece in so many different ways (Interatellar is up there too - go Christopher Nolan!)
7
IxianHwiNoree Mar 30, 2026 +3
Yes! This is the one I thought of right away. Brilliant!
3
Character-Activity97 Mar 29, 2026 +4
Shutter island is one of my favourites. The whole atmosphere of the movie and thinking about what's going on even with the ending. A brilliant movie.
4
GoonerEdgeLorde Mar 30, 2026 +4
The Dark Knight was probably my favorite Batman movie of all time. I've watched it about a thousand times. The entire trilogy was great, but TDK scratches an itch like no other movie. Heath Ledger's performance elevates that movie to legendary status.
4
ReggieR2100 Mar 29, 2026 +12
Predator
12
shiawase-89 Mar 29, 2026 +3
It was my childhood movie, lol. I was allow to watch Predator at 7 years old but not Saving Private Ryan.
3
bean0_burrito Mar 29, 2026 +3
i mean, predator is an alien. war is a completely different beast
3
shiawase-89 Mar 29, 2026 +2
True but there’s some overkills in predator. Like Blain, I was like “oh shit”, Dillon too, painful death. But now typing this, I remember the scene in saving private Ryan and the kid crying for his mom as his guts were out. So yeah you got a point.
2
bean0_burrito Mar 29, 2026 +3
i mean, jesse ventura was awesome in that movie. i think the worst part honestly was the skinned SF guys. and as a veteran, your dad made the right choice.
3
wwaxwork Mar 29, 2026 +3
I prefer Prey. But I missed the Predator hype back when it all first came out and am late to the party.
3

I collect movies, so I've seen a ton of great ones. But my favorite movie is still the first favorite movie I ever had and the movie that made me want to collect movies: Jaws.

wwaxwork Mar 29, 2026 +6
The movies I think are best now are not the movies kid, teenage me or pretentious 20 year old me think are best. 30 year old me liked Sci Fi movies and 58 year old me is tired and just wants some rollicking good fun. Kid me loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (except for that bit on the boat which traumatized us all). Teen me Was all about Blade Runner 20 year old me. Had a plethora of choices. Gattaga, The Crying Game, Before Sunrise, Schindler's List, The Usual Suspects. Fight Club, Saving Private Ryan. Lord movie going me in my 20's had a great decade. 30 year old me Primer or Moon. Got to love low budget clever Sci Fi. 58 year old me. Prey, Sinners, Fury Road. Andor ( technically not a movie but I don't care).
6
MaximusOctopus Mar 29, 2026 +3
Moon was a masterful performance and a great story. Excellent. Freaking Sam Rockwell is so badass. Massively under-rated. He's won a bunch of awards but never as a leading actor. Always there with epic support, though.

Hypnox88 Mar 29, 2026 +3
I had the most emotional roller coaster of feelings and enjoyment out of One Cut of the Dead than any other movie. If you are interested go in completing blind. You will have a lot ruined if you know anything about the movie. I so wish I could watch it again for the first time blind. Here are the reviews from Rotten Tomatoes 100%Tomatometer[98 Reviews](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/one_cut_of_the_dead/reviews) 84%Popcornmeter[500+ Ratings](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/one_cut_of_the_dead/reviews/all-audience)

I second this. A friend who liked it recommended it, and about 20 minutes in I start asking him if it goes anywhere. He's like just wait, and yeah it was phenomenal. Very creative and unique, and have no interest in giving anything away. I immediately showed it to a couple other friends; they were a bit confused at first, but adored it as it unfolded.
2
fiskemannen Mar 29, 2026 +3
I just love The Thin Red Line. Poetic, beautiful, dark, tragic, romantic, it just has it all.
3
snowmaninheat Mar 30, 2026 +2
Can’t believe it took me this long to find it. “One man looks at a dying bird and thinks there's nothing but unanswered pain. That death's got the final word. It's laughing at him. Another man sees that same bird, feels the glory. Feels something smiling through him.”

I loved so much movie, but Iron Man is one of my best. Maybe I am the only one but I find it very inspirational. I don't know why but there is a kind of force and perseverance in it.
3
trump50ladin Mar 29, 2026 +8
The Truman Show for me. Every time I rewatch it, it somehow gets funnier, sadder, and more unsettling at the same time.

Saving Private Ryan. Saw it in theaters in 1998. Nothing has even been in the conversation for me since.

Oh good Lord, that was heartbreaking. When Spielberg won best director that night, he thanked the soldiers for stopping the Holocaust. The world was robbed of what he was going to say when he should have won best picture.

What was your favorite thing about the film? For me personally, it was the soundtrack.
3
Total_Physics728 Mar 29, 2026 +2
I don’t get the hype about Interstellar at all. I think it’s good, but I wouldn’t even put it in my top 20.
2
Soft_Piglet_7508 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Obviously, I think it’s mostly personal preference. But I’ve always loved the stars no matter how cheesy that may sound, and Interstellar managed to make astrophysics actually entertaining for me. But I do understand how others may find it much less interesting.
3
shiawase-89 Mar 29, 2026 +4
Interstellar, I can’t think of another that’s at that level. Maybe Gladiator or Black Hawk Down.

Also Interstellar. I saw it at release in IMAX at the Chinese Theatre in LA, and I saw it in IMAX 70mm at the Chinese Theatre again when it released a couple years ago. Literally sat in the same seats, I checked my receipts. It was really cool to take my now teenage daughter to see at the second time.

My personal favorite is probably 9. I might be one in a million but I thought it was so cool as a kid. It creeped me out, and there were some things in it I didn’t understand (about war and such) but now I do. I can watch it again and again and each time make a different theory or have a different thought about it. I think it’s super cool, I really enjoy the scares in this movie opposed to modern horror films with just a c**** jump scare. The designs of the monsters are creepy and unique. I LOVE the snake monster, that creeped me out for years, I probably had nightmares about it growing up lol, also watching their souls get sucked out of their faces is so incredibly terrifying, I can’t explain it

La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, from 1928. The first time I watched it I had a really transcendent experience, just entirely based on Falconetti's acting as Jeanne. The only film where I had an even broadly similar experience was Kanashimi no Belladonna, an adult-oriented animated movie from 1973 whose main character is also named Jeanne, in a clear reference. But for that movie it was the psychedelic elements that got me out of my head, rather than the acting.

Absolutely. My favorite soundtrack. One of the reasons why I love the movie. I fell in love with Madeleine Stowe in this movie.

What is up with this movie? It’s referenced in so many other movies I’ve seen! Is that THAT good? 😭
2
HansBlixJr Mar 29, 2026 +3
you'll watch it and then you'll get to watch Godfather II. this will be a good time.

Aware-Ad-8301 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Lol I personally didn’t care much for the godfather 🥲😭 everyone talks about it as peak cinema but idk 🤷🏽‍♀️. Part three was actually the best one Imo even though it’s the most hated film in the series . I’m not saying part 3 is good at all bc it’s not 🥲 but I enjoy Al Pacino in it. It could also be the way it’s edited that I wasn’t a fan of , I feel the movie moves very slowly and not a lot happens for the first two hours 🥲. It’s 99% dialogue so if you’re not a slow burn / dialogue person I wouldn’t really recommend.

Soft_Piglet_7508 Mar 29, 2026 +3
I’ve never watched this movie. I see it’s mostly common around guys. I watched ‘You’ve Got Mail’ and I was almost annoyed at how many references Tom Hank’s character made to that movie. 😭😭
3
Aware-Ad-8301 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Definitely think it’s probs more popular for men 😭😭. lol I can admit I was truly just being a thirsty Pacino fan girl and waiting for his scenes. I can appreciate fine film and am not using the “ I’m just a girl1!1!1!”  Excuse 🤣 but the godfather is borderline unwatchable 😭😩
2
Soft_Piglet_7508 Mar 29, 2026 +2
I’ll definitely give it a watch before I knock on it! But I don’t have the highest of hopes for this movie 😅, it just doesn’t seem like something I’d enjoy.
2
Total_Physics728 Mar 29, 2026 +2
You should watch 'Goodfellas'. I think it’s up there with 'The Godfather'. It’s a really fun watch and it still holds up to this day. Definitely one of De Niro's best roles.

The Godfather part 3 sucked lol

Obvious_Ideal9844 Mar 30, 2026 +2
You've got mail really didn't age well, I was ranting and joking through the entire film 😂 it's rancid comedy

Yes. It's that good. View it as a three generation telling of the American immigrant story. The struggle, the founding of a great enterprise in the 1st generation. The Peak performance of the enterprise in the second generation. And the fall of the enterprise in the third generation. Thing is, the arc applies to the Corleones (fictional Mob family) and as equally to other great enterprises (the Hilton family comes to mind, although the fall isn't as drastic and arguably it takes 4 generations). It is the story of early and mid-century America from the early 1900s thru ca. 1980.

My personal favorite movie of all time is Sgt Pepper 1978 , starring The Bee Gees , Peter Frampton and Paul Nicholas. It’s a beautiful film , I love the music and the colors / costuming are gorgeous. I love the plot as well and I think the accompanying book is also a great read! I will defend this movie always because it’s so special and so beautiful. It’s going on ten years as my favorite film now!

Soft_Piglet_7508 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Awesome! Would you recommend I read the book first or watch the movie? I love to read, especially when there’s a movie adaptation because then you can deduce how true they stayed to the book.
2
Aware-Ad-8301 Mar 29, 2026 +2
If you want more in depth information on the plot I’d read the book , but if you just want to get into the story and don’t mind learning more later you can watch the movie first!  IMO the movie does a great job in brining the book scenes and characters to life. There’s no dialogue in the movie other than a few key narrated sections , everything else is visual /  connected to the songs and from there you can figure out the story. It just depends on your preference and whether you like to know what’s going to happen or be surprised 😄.

There are so many ways to define "best". I'll go with Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain because it was the movie that opened my eyes to what a movie could be. Such a strange, beautiful trip.

the 2008 live action speed racer. one of the few movies that made me laugh, cry of joy, and of sadness, the visuals? so fuckin cool (and like, retro aged instead of poorly aged imo). the acting? awesome. the story? it's speed racer, obviously i loved it. i honest to god felt like i was in speed's mind throughout it. plus at the end of the day, it's a colorful movie about car go fast, and that's pretty sick.

The *best* probably has to be Jaws, for me. Truly flawless filmmaking, in my opinion. At every moment you just *know* that Spielberg is making you feel EXACTLY what he wants you to feel. It's a masterful piece of pop art.

Casablanca, it is so romantic and I’m not just talking about the relationships. The timeframe, where it takes place, the desperation, the fruition for some and finally may I say Humphrey Bogart and the classic Ingrid Bergman.
