Ireland's is Father Ted and it's not even remotely close (don't point out it was produced by an English network, you will be ignored)

For Australia, [Kath and Kim](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aqr7Ykxc4Y&list=PLSwREao8vm9zs9D-UtmnkjrvA4LbtktFl) would have to be up there for the best sitcom and arguably the most Australian.
From 2002 to 2007 it was just great Australian humour. While the regular cast were the backbone of the show and stood on their own, it had many guest stars including Michael Buble, Eric Bana, Matt Lucas, Geoffrey Rush, Shane Warne, Kylie Minogue and others. There were even a few made for TV movies.
It is very Australian and they did try to do a US version with Selma Blair as Kim,, but it just didn't hit the same. Although they did do a full season.

Currently, *Colin from Accounts* and *Fisk* probably top the Aussie list.
But we shouldn't forget the brilliant Working Dog satirical sitcoms: *Frontline, The Hollowmen* and *Utopia*. On a timeline, those three start before Kath and Kim and come up to the present day. (One of the stars of *Utopia* is Sarah Snook's husband, BTW.)
Or John Clarke in *The Games*, a mockumentary that supposedly followed the executives in charge of readying Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Games. Fuelled by leaks from the actual agency doing the same job, it was wonderfully accurate.

My take on *Kath and Kim* is that the first season is gold, and it got progressively worse -- it kept repeating the same beats, and just got old. By the time we got the movies, it was an awful self-parody. Thoughts?

There aren’t many sitcoms in France, and those that do exist have a different format than in the English speaking world.
In the 90s there was a wave of terrible, cheaply and quickly produced sitcoms made for teens (*Hélène et les garçons*) that some have nostalgic feelings towards.
In the last 25-ish years, the dominant form of sitcom has been the "shortcom". They’re mostly spackle programming designed to fill up the time between the news and the evening film with something audiences would be less likely to switch from than ads. As a result a typical episode is 5 minutes long. Most of those shortcoms have static shots and are nothing more than sketches with recurring characters but no narrative connective tissue. The best of the bunch is probably *Kaamelott* which is a comedy about the knights of the round table, and is actually pretty good.

For what it’s worth, in the 80s and 90s in the UK we had a sitcom called ‘Allo ‘Allo that was set in France. It was brilliant so you’re welcome to claim that if you like.

Among the recent ones I can think of, a solid chunk are adaptations of sitcoms from other countries, like *Ghosts*, *The Office* or *Burning Love*.
Thinking a bit more about it, there was arte’s *Au service de la France*, which had a good scene, but apart from it was very dull, or *La meilleure version de moi-même*, which I didn’t care for. *Platane*, maybe? (haven’t seen it)

And let's not forget the King of Kensington!

But the TPBs are the TPBs.

That’s irrelevant. A show’s success & impact are independent of whether or not it is the most well known piece of a certain actor. That said, I think you’re mistaken in tossing aside the impact of Schitt’s.
Anyway, silly debate is silly.

Japan doesn’t really do sitcoms per se but I will nominate two different comedy shows.
勇者ヨシヒコシリーズ The Hero Yoshihiko Series - probably the closest thing I can think of as a sitcom in Japan I’ve seen. A tv drama that’s a parody of RPGs more specifically the Dragon Quest series. Some of the jokes are very referential so if don’t know the reference you’ll be lost. However Merebu’s spells, random encounters and paper mache monsters are funny enough that anybody can enjoy the show. I believe there are three series of 12 episode each.
ガキの使いやあらへんで!! Forget the English just Gaki no Tsukai - this is the source of many online gifs and things you’ve seen when you hear about “Japanese game shows.” In reality it’s a variety show hosted by Downtown, Kokoriko and Tsukitei Hosei. Every week they do different corner which ranges from things like Silent Library, Seven Transformations when a guest comedian interrupts their meeting seven times as different characters to try and get them to laugh, guessing what brand product they ate, singing impression battles, and some times just comedic talking. However what it’s probably most famous for is its “24 Hours No Laughing” series of specials where they are sent to a hospital, school, airport, hot spring, etc. and they cannot laugh for 24 hours and if they do they are caned. Downtown’s Matsumoto took a similar idea to Amazon and called it Doxumental but when the rest of the world did their own versions it was “Last One Laughing.” Again not a sitcom but one of the most iconic Japanese comedy shows.
