What’s the highest number of times you’ve rewatched a film ? Did it get better or worse?

Posted by Superman_2727

I have rewatched In the Mood for Love now 5 times and I feel I should stop now. but every time i think i’ve understood it, something new hits—like a glance, a pause, a piece of silence. it’s starting to feel less like a film and more like a memory i keep returning to, like i’m chasing a feeling instead of watching a story. at what point does it stop being discovery and just become me not letting go?

I don't really keep count but I would say that it safe to say that I watched Training Day at least 20+ times.

Same, I think it was the tenth watch when I noticed that the girl Jake(Ethan Hawke) rescues says her cousins are from Hill Side Trece when threatening the crackheads in the alley. Sniper(Raymond Cruz) has a large back tattoo saying Hill Side Trece that is slowly revealed when Jake is playing cards with them later in the movie. With the top half out of focus until right before Smiley(Cliff Curtis) gets the text signal from Alonzo(Denzel Washington). It is fully revealed when Sniper opens the shower curtain and also focused on from the following ceiling angle. Just the way the tattoo is revealed just slightly ahead of the full reveal is such a good detail

Yep... Heat is another one. Just badass guys beating the c*** out of the world, and then the good guy wins in the end.

GiddyGabby Mar 23, 2026 +4
I've watched Heat so many times just in the last year alone that I've lost count. I just love the cast, the characters, the over the top shootout, the music. It's just good entertainment.

I was off school with chicken pox at age 8 or 9. There were no kids TV channels We had just bought our first video player (VCR for the Americans out there) I had BMX bandits and nothing else to watch I watched it about 30 times in a fortnight

I have no idea how many times I've watched The Mask, but I've been watching it off and on for about 30 years. Honestly, it got better. A lot of the funnier parts for me as an adult are when Jim Carrey isn't wearing the mask.
7
XaqXophre Mar 23, 2026 +2
That was in regular VHS circulation for sure. It's so funny.
2
Urahara611845 Mar 23, 2026 +2
For sure! Whenever I see a collection of VHS tapes anywhere, my brain automatically scans for that purple and green box.
2
BaroqueBitch66 Mar 23, 2026 +7
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played The Mummy (1999) as background noise.

emerican Mar 23, 2026 +6
I’ve watched Donnie Darko a dozen times. Comfort film for me. Every watch is better!

5
DiaDeLosMuebles Mar 23, 2026 +5
Big Lebowski is one of those where each rewatch reveals something you missed before.

to me there are a handful of movies that are so perfect its just a joy to watch them for its perfection. dialogues, humor, storyline, pace, settings

PigSlam Mar 23, 2026 +5
As a kid, my brother and I wore out our first VHS copy of Back to the Future, and replaced with another. We were over 100 viewing at that time.
5
Bad_breath_unlimited Mar 23, 2026 +4
Terminator 2 & Dumb and Dumber. At least once in a every few months. Doing this since the pandemic. It became better and better specifically for Dumb and Dumber as it has aged so well and present day comedies are so lame comparatively.
4
XaqXophre Mar 23, 2026 +5
T2 is probably my most. Any time I was a kid and couldn't think of something better at the video store, this was the default. It neither improves nor gets worse as it is perfect.
5
Successful_Court809 Mar 24, 2026 +1
T2 is one of the movies that still hold up very well

Gay_Asian_Boy Mar 23, 2026 +3
Fellowship of the Ring. About 10 times Then Kung Fu Hustle, The Fury Road, Contact, Die Hard, Home Alone and the other two LotR. All about 5 times

Samael13 Mar 23, 2026 +5
My very favorite movies, I've watched probably dozens of times each. I couldn't even begin to tell you how many times I've watched *Alien, Robocop,* and the original *Star Wars* trilogy. Why do you feel like you should stop? Why does it matter if it's discovery or not letting go? If watching a movie brings you a sense of fulfillment or comfort instead of some sense of new discovery, is that a problem? I think that falling into the trap of *only* watching things you already know and seeking out *only* that sense of nostalgia or comfort *might* be a problem, but there's nothing wrong with having favorites that you return to, even if you're not necessarily getting something new out of them. Sometimes it's nice to just return to a thing that you know you love and feel that sense of excitement and warmth from enjoying your favorite movies. It's like anything else; I read a lot of books, and it's always a mix of books I'm experiencing for the first time and old favorites that I'm returning to for another read.

mattverso Mar 23, 2026 +3
Back to the Future trilogy/Star Wars OT I have absolutely no idea how many times I’ve watched them. Probably minimum 50+ times per movie. Star Wars prequels probably 20+ each. Shawshank Redemption probably 50+ too. Star Trek 2/3/4, dozen of times. Terminator 1+2, dozens. Alien & Aliens, dozens. Bar watching Terminator 1&2 with my son last year I haven’t watched any of them recently.
3
nimeton0 Mar 23, 2026 +3
*Animal House*, well over a hundred times, still great!
3
After_Worldliness674 Mar 23, 2026 +3
*Lost in Translation* probably 60 times. I still can't hear what he said to her at the end.

what-isthis-even Mar 23, 2026 +2
That's one of my fave movies of all time. It's the perfect film.

Also one of my favs. Very simple movie that just works

2
Turbojelly Mar 23, 2026 +3
BASEketball. Band and I watched it every friday for years.
3
Dopeysprinkles Mar 23, 2026 +3
Interstellar and just as interesting as the first time!
3
blucthulhu Mar 23, 2026 +3
Probably Star Wars. I lost count a long time ago but it's probably around 50 if I had to guess. I'd say it holds up. The trench run scene is exciting nearly every time I watch it.
3
Chris22044 Mar 23, 2026 +3
I have all Elvis Presley films on permanent rotation and expect I will continue for the rest of my life. They certainly don't get any better. It is just comfort/nostalgia. Why over-think it?
3
EmmaAstralSprout Mar 23, 2026 +2
re-watching in the mood for love is basically just masochism at some point.
2
Superman_2727 Mar 23, 2026 +1
yes it has become exactly that and i am gonna stop after another watch (probably)

2
Engelhurt_Bumperdink Mar 23, 2026 +2
The Day The Earth Stood Still (original version) Forbidden Planet Primer The Man From Earth Seen all of those more times than I can count. Still not 100% on Primer though . 😂
2
LowerSeat2712 Mar 23, 2026 +1
I don't know why they haven't remade The Man From Earth. Seems like a golden opportunity given how much these film executives like reboots. Maybe it is too intellectual for a broader audience? Not enough action and t***.

I’m somewhere north of 150 times watching the 1973 Jesus Christ Superstar. Only gets better.

I’ve watched Dumb and Dumber at least 30 times over the years and it gets better every single time.
2
AcrylicPickle Mar 23, 2026 +2
I've watched it many times since, but I saw Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves 9 times in the theater the summer it came out. I love it!
2
Elelith Mar 23, 2026 +2
\~400. Stayed pretty much the same. No complaints. Robin Hood: Men in Tights We didn't have many VHS when I was a kid so for a year I watched this every day. Then on top of that all the other times before and after adds up to roughly 400 times I've seen this master piece. 90's was just different, okay. We didn't have much to do, we only had 3 TV channels in my country and most of them was news or politicians talking.
2
OutgunOutmaneuver Mar 24, 2026 +2
ive seen the exorcist about 167 times and keeps gettin funnier every single time I see it!..... (jk I watched dune part 2 about 30+ times and it never got boring. I can keep watching it and not get bored.😄)
2
european_dimes Mar 24, 2026 +2
I've watched Wayne's World, Tommy Boy, Mallrats, Clerks countless times. Dozens each.  I think younger people just don't understand how many times we rewatched movies in the 80s and 90s.
2
ProduceEmbarrassed97 Mar 24, 2026 +2
I was 'asked to leave' 6th form as I 'wasn't participating as expected', which is a polite way of saying that I was doing f*** all. I spent 2 years doing nothing constructive. This was during the 90s in the UK, and we didn't have cable yet, so we only had 4.5 channels (channel 5 had a really crappy reception). Our VHS selection was limited, so I watched '4 Weddings and a Funeral' most days. I've seen it over 400 times.
2
kneeco28 Mar 23, 2026 +1
There are multiple movies I've watched over 50 times. There are movies that came out this decade that I've already seen 5+ times. It's not even my list of the best movies of the decade, necessarily. In some ways, it gets better, others worse. And even viewing to viewing, sometimes it will be hard to engage and then the next time will be the best experience. I think there can be a point where you get to a place with a particular picture that you feel it's better to disengage, but it's different for different movies there isn't some magic number. There was a time when I just hit that kind of wall with The Matrix and put it aside for years, for example. The beats stopped being impactful in the same way and the movie couldn't get a hold of me cause I knew it so well. On the other hand, Dazed and Confused I've probably seen just as much and never hit that wall - like you're hanging out with the movie instead of being gripped by it is a feature not a bug there. I've seen Killers of the Flower Moon 20 times and that just came out a few years ago. Hasn't lost its brilliance yet.
1
Deep_Loss_4084 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Spider-Verse. I’ve seen it 3 times. I used to think I was Miles, but now that I’m in the workforce, I’ve fully embraced my inner Parker. It’s not even sad, just relatable. The movie feels a lot more "grounded" and funny now that I’m living the adult life. Definitely aged like fine wine.
1
knallpilzv2 Mar 23, 2026 +1
I've watched Death Proof at around 30 times in the years following its release and now I rarely ever do. I'd say it stayed the same, but a lot of movies can change depending on your current mood in terms of how hard they hit. So I don't have a good reference point now since I've sort of overwatched it and don't watch it regularly anymore. But the best experience was seeing it in theaters. It's a movie that very much benefits from it.

My friend has watched titanic for 9 times😭🥀

Successful_Court809 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Watched this movie again for the second time not too long ago and it was very different to my first experience. Definitely not as good but still a good movie.
1
Kitsuraw Mar 23, 2026 +1
Alien, aliens, pitch black, and the thing. I’ve probably watched all of them over a dozen times through the years. Just isn’t that many newer style space horror that hits as good as they do. Riddick and the prequel thing though feel close to the originals just haven’t watched them enough.
1
gatorgongitcha Mar 23, 2026 +1
I watched The New Guy every single day after school in fifth grade. I still like it about the same when I revisit it.
1
Ok-Metal-4719 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Over 50 times. When rewatching a movie makes it worse I stop rewatching.

Competitive-Rate7561 Mar 23, 2026 +1
I must have seen C***** about 4/5 times and i was planning another rewatch soon. This movie is pure Scorsese who is probably my favorite director and ive seen most other movies of his at least twice. I probably love the directing/editing the most, especially the way they build up the world when they show how they are making money in Vegas. The editing + soundtrack during this part of the movie is top top notch. Then you add in career best performances from Niro, Pesci and Sharon Stone, even James Woods was really good in this and the rest of the cast was perfectly picked. Cinematography is top tier (the desert scene 😮‍💨). For me this a near flawless movie, i like it more than Goodfellas. Honorable mentions are Lawrence of Arabia, Heat, In Bruges and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
1
ythc Mar 23, 2026 +1
Heat, at least 6 times
1
GoldenBoyRecords Mar 23, 2026 +1

I rewatch until it stops surprising me.
1
LowerSeat2712 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Probably Raiders of the Lost Ark. I can't even remember how many times I've seen it. It does get less appealing at a point.
1
Diseman81 Mar 23, 2026 +1
It’s impossible to say. There are a ton of movies I’ve watched multiple times a year since I was a kid in the 80s. Sometimes I’d watch them every week and multiple times in that week. I’ve easily seen movies like Back To The Future or The Goonies over 100 times each. When I see one I like I have no problem watching it over and over again.
1
masegesege_ Mar 23, 2026 +1
I’ve seen Crazy Rich Asians more times than I care to admit. Also Blow.
1
januscanal Mar 23, 2026 +1
I am a movie re-watcher. I have seen The Matrix over a hundred times, easy. It never gets bad, ever. I have a list of 20 films at least that I have seen 20 times each at least. None ever get bad, some get better. The ones that get better are typically films, not just movies. My definition: a film is a piece of art created with a vision, a movie is a piece of entertainment aimed at generating revenue. Films that probably improved a bit: \- Heat (1995) \- No Country For Old Men (2007) \- The Big Lebowski (1998) \- The Seventh Seal (1957) \- Dr. Strangelove (1964) There are tons more.

WoodyMellow Mar 23, 2026 +1
I've seen Jaws well over 50 times , maybe close to 100, and it never gets worse.
1
Plagarism101 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Tenet like 15 times Has the most rewatchability in any movie other than goodfellas
1
techside_notes Mar 23, 2026 +1
I’ve had that with a few films where it stops feeling like “watching” and starts feeling like revisiting a mood. I don’t think it necessarily gets worse, it just changes. The first few watches feel like discovery, then later it’s more about familiarity and noticing small details you missed before. After that, it almost becomes tied to where you were in life when you watched it. At some point I usually step away for a while, not because it’s ruined, but so it can feel fresh again later. Coming back after a long gap tends to bring that sense of discovery back in a different way.
1
inchlongnipples Mar 23, 2026 +2
Probably seen all of the Lord of the Rings 100+ times. Terminator 2, Fury Road, and James Cameron's Avatar 50+ times. These are "sit down and watch" numbers, my "background noise" numbers are unfathomably higher.
2
AUAIOMRN Mar 23, 2026 +1
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Probably 30+ times because when my son was two he wanted to watch it over and over. Overall I ended up liking it more than when I first saw it, especially in terms of appreciating just how well-crafted it is.
1
Competitive-Bike-277 Mar 23, 2026 +1
I've seen the sound of music nearly 50 times. Not because I like it but because my mom does. We'd play it on Saturday afternoons because a 2.5 hr movie is still better than 45 minutes in church.  All that really changed is that I know most of it by heart.
1
iheartlungs Mar 23, 2026 +2
I’ve seen the Lord of the rings trilogy once a year roughly since they came out…
2
I_dont_bone_goats Mar 23, 2026 +1
The prestige for me, couldn’t put a number on it but it’s probably in the high 20’s It’s such a fun movie to show someone the first time, and although it’s obviously super popular, I’ve had so many friends/dates with people who haven’t seen it. Only once has someone guessed the twist at the end, I was absolutely shocked considering how well they hide it lol
1
space-cyborg Mar 23, 2026 +1
Hidden in plain sight though!

Ive watched MANY films over 100 times. But Ive seen TRHPS over 500 times.
1
Typical80sKid Mar 23, 2026 +1
I think my big ones are Jurassic Park, Matrix, Shawn of the Dead, Dark Knight, Big Lebowski, and Christmas Vacation. I’ve seen each of these 15+ times and still enjoy them. Every now and then I’ll watch one and pick out something new or maybe something I had forgotten about.
1
bluewaterboy Mar 23, 2026 +1
Yiyi is my comfort movie. I watch it often. It's long, so I usually don't finish it in one setting. Similar to you, though, there's always something new that I catch when I watch it :-)
1
GoldenCracker10 Mar 23, 2026 +1
that movie is so good definitely one of those you can watch over and over
1

T2, lotr, big lebowski, my cousin Vinny, home alone (have kids), true romance, reservoir dogs, pulp fiction,... No. They don't.
2

There's nothing wrong with chasing a feeling.
1
Upbeat-Local-836 Mar 23, 2026 +1
BTILC uncountable number of times watched and listened to. (It’s in the BluRay player in the Honda) Wed ran pulp fiction as a background/ ambience movie for years when playing cards at families house. I’ve seen the first trilogy SW films probably an around hundred times each, ESB maybe 200 times because that is the best SW movie. I rewatch Coen Bros movies a lot. Dozens of times for many of them. Big Fish is my wife and my favorite together movie. Probably 15-20 times.
1
Kazz-Davore Mar 23, 2026 +2

I've seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show well over 100 times in the cinema. It's ingrained in me.
1
maeldwyn Mar 23, 2026 +1
I have seen A Christmas Story, Let it Ride, O Brother Where Art Thou and The Thirteenth Warrior over 15 times each (probably closer to 30 for Christmas Story, I'm a Jean Shepherd junkie). I never get tired of any of them.
1
Benjynn Mar 24, 2026 +2
Christmas Story is one of mine, too. My old man and I watch the 24-hour stream on repeat after the exhausting family-filled Christmas activites and it's become my favorite holiday tradition.
2
PuppiesAndPixels Mar 23, 2026 +1
I've watched groundhog day on groundhog day every year basically since it came out.
1
CountJohn12 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Just counting adulthood probably 2001 around a dozenish times. Probably not quite as good now as it was but it definitely improved with early rewatches. For all time I've probably seen The Lion King and several Star Trek movies like 25-30 times but that's a different thing because a lot of them were as a kid.
1
space-cyborg Mar 23, 2026 +1
20-30 times each: Holy Grail, Princess bride, raiders of the lost ark, Star Wars a new hope & Empire strikes back. Also Die hard, but only because it’s a Christmas tradition. More than 10: the departed, the prestige, La confidential, memento, primer, 8 mile, dangerous liaisons, Fargo, pulp fiction
1
dnstuff Mar 23, 2026 +1
I've watched Willow more than any other movie. More than 15 times, I'd guess, but I'm not sure what the number is. I f****** love that movie.

1
Surviving2021 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Fellowship of the Rings like 50 times and it still is a masterpiece along with the others from the trilogy. Outside of those, maybe the first Harry Potter movie is one that no matter how many times I watch it, it still has that touch of magic and wonder a lot of modern shows are missing. The only big flaws are what little CGI it does use look terrible at this point, it wouldn't be the worst candidate for a anniversary edition with edited CGI just in the scenes that are particularly bad, keeping as much practical intact as possible.
1
Cool_Mushroom817 Mar 24, 2026 +1
God In the Mood for Love is such a great version of this. When I was first getting into movies I watched Before Sunrise 3 times in a single day; by the second and third showing I was pausing and rewinding scenes like an NFL defensive coordinator. Had a similar experience with Me and You and Everybody We Know - so many great scenes stacked on top of each other, made a great rewatch.
1
Burwhale_The_Avenger Mar 24, 2026 +1
Hot Fuzz. Never gets old.
1
one_five_one Mar 24, 2026 +1
I watched The Big Lebowski every night for an entire summer.
1
robot_ankles Mar 24, 2026 +1
Back to the Future: 60 times Back to the Future II: 20 times Back to the Future III: 120+ times Worked in a video rental store when these were out on VHS. Every shift after school, pop in BTF3 and get to 'work'. It was like a favorite song I could sing along with.
1
OinkMcOink Mar 24, 2026 +1
I've seen An Affair to Remember more than 20 times now, maybe more than 30, I'm not so sure anymore. It hits the same every time.
1
marlagirl Mar 24, 2026 +1
I watched What We Do In The Shadows at least 20 times. I know every word. It gets better every time
1
HustlinInTheHall Mar 24, 2026 +1
Genuinely have seen fellowship of the ring probably 200 times. If you count the amount of times it has played while I've been in the room it's probably 1000, since I used to put it on to fall asleep probably every other night for several years and I used to let the extended trilogy basically autoplay when I was playing RPGs for a few months out of college (mostly LOTRO). I have ADD and it just helps to have something as ambient noise.
1
dudereverend Mar 24, 2026 +1
I've seen Raiders of the Lost Ark probably 1500 times in my life. In 2003 or 2004 I watched it every day for the whole year. Just to be able to say I did. Other than YouTube reactions, I don't think I've watched it in 3 or 4 years at least.
1
ClickyPool Mar 24, 2026 +1
Stopped counting Empire strikes back in my highschool when it was 20+ times
1
rogueit Mar 24, 2026 +1
I've watched Jeramiah Johnson and Millers Crossing each well over 20 times. They are amazing films for different reasons. I look forward to seeing them again.
1
Orionsven Mar 24, 2026 +1
When we were annoying mum, she would put one of two VHS tapes to calm us down. Either one of the Looney Toons compilations or The Goods Must Be Crazy. I've seen both at least 50 times each. Just re-watch the latter the other week introducing my son to it... so 51 times. I have also watched Coming To America, Armageddon and Drop Dead Fred just as many times each. These are my comfort movies.
1
Bunny_Bixler99 Mar 24, 2026 +1
"In the Mood for Love" From your description, you actually *became* a character from that amazing film. (I've watched it at least a dozen times myself).
1
lotep Mar 24, 2026 +1
Don't know for sure but I do remember in the VHS days my buddy had one tape when he moved out Young Guns 2, I swear we watched that movie every single day of the 1991 summer vacation, we had to have missed some but I remember even back then near the last few weeks we were making sure we put it on just so we could say we watched it every day so I'm going to say "Young Guns 2" 30-40×. On a side note I know I've watched Sinners 6× so far this year which has got to be a record for me for a movie that came out the same year (or last year I guess 🤷‍♀️), the whole movie year last year was crazy rewatchable, aside from Sinners I've watched the first half of One Battle After Another at least 5×, Weapons 3×. Bugonia 2× and I know I've got some more watches of the 28 Years movies coming (Dr. Ian Kelson rules!).
1

I have easily watched Interstellar over 20 times and counting. Can’t stop won’t stop!
1

I've legitimately seen Fight Club at least seventeen times. 12 of them were over a Christmas break living in China where I was stuck inside with little other entertainment.

YoshSchmenge Mar 25, 2026 +1
As someone who used to use film studies as part of my job in education, there are films that I can say I have seen 50-100 times over the last 20 years. A few of those films were a chore to watch, but others were absolutely a some of my best classes.
