I love this. I think I may say this to my son. "you'll never be enough for an insecure woman". I think this one may go either way.

“we need to talk” right after everything seemed fine still haunts me to this day, instant stomach drop no warning at all
32
kezotl Apr 3, 2026 +8
My dad made it so that even just "[name], come here" in a specific tone (not angry but somewhat confrontational) triggers that feeling lol

CompetitiveLab2056 Apr 3, 2026 +3
Same…. Just reading your comment got me
3
katalyna78 Apr 3, 2026 +2
My old therapist gave me a reframe for these types of situations. A response of "how can I help?" Takes most of the stomach dropping sensation away

When I was a teen in the eighties I started hanging out with the “wrong crowd” and instead of lecturing me my dad would say, “tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.” Shit was deep when I was a kid and I still think about those words to this day. RIP pops 🥲

Reminds me of "I don't judge a book by it's cover, but I know what section of the library I'm in."

My mom said a variation of this: show me who your friends are, and I’ll show you what you will become. I use it on my own kids now.

Overheard this one while waiting for my food order. A group of friends was whisper arguing and one of them said "Well, at least I can sleep better at night knowing that my family tree isn't a circle like yours". They all went quiet and then laughed like it was nothing.

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" is the iconic final line spoken by Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) to Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) in the 1939 film Gone with the Wind. Ranked as the #1 movie quote of all time by the American Film Institute, it signifies Rhett abandoning his tumultuous relationship with Scarlett. I’ve been quoting it for years. It truly changed my life.

Ahh…. Mine was unforgettable enough Listnook removed it…. Worked at a rec center in my teens: roughly 2016 or so. There was a wrestling event going on so a lot of people/travelers. I’m walking up a flight of stairs and a fairly old couple is starting to walk down. Wife- “do you have your cane” Husband- “no but I’ve got my (racial slur that starts with an N- - - - -)beater” It was in fact his cane…. never felt that feeling before: I was disgusted, I am glad to see we as a society have come a long ways from such grotesque discrimination
3
cantbememan Apr 3, 2026 +4
I love you, but I don’t love you like that anymore. It was truly my own decisions that made her feel that way.

"She's out!"...spoken by the OB after 52 hours of labor and 4.5 hours of pushing. The relief that I felt in that moment I will never forget. Close second, "I love you mama" spoken by my now 2 year old.

Was having dinner with a friend at a restaurant. There was father and daughter (I’m assuming), who was at most 8/9, in the booth across the aisle from ours. We’re eating our dinner when the daughter started crying. The father then responded as follows: “Stop crying because I said no to ice cream! You get to eat for free, live in my house for free, have plenty of toys, and all the nice clothes you could want! Stop being a whiny f*****g b**** and be grateful I even let you have the apple juice!”

"Tomorrow's a brand new day, never been opened. We'll try again." My Pop, with a smile and a shoulder squeeze, every time I screwed up as a kid. I'd give everything I own and both arms for one more brand new day with him.

"You are simultaneously one of the smartest and dumbest people I've ever met", said by my girlfriend at the time when I was 24. I just thought it was hilarious. She would say odd, blunt things all the time, but that one really stuck with me. I wasn't even insulted by the "dumbest" part - I know I can be pretty fuckin dumb sometimes - it was how she phrased it and how sincere she was, like it was something that had been baffling and frustrating her for a while and she just had to say it.

At an outdoor concert, a bunch of drunk guys were being dumb and almost knocked over a tall patio light onto this woman, I saw it happening and was able to catch it before it landed on her, and she just turned around and looked right at them and in the most disgusted tone said “Who is your mother!” Like it was the moms fault for not raising them right, I still laugh about it all the time

I listened to the audiobook for Outer Dark by Cormac McCarthy. Has one of the most disturbing but harmonious sentences I’d ever heard: >!“Holme saw the blade wink in the light like a long cat’s eye slant and malevolent and a dark smile erupted on the child’s throat and went all broken down the front of it."!<
