Gas station sushi. tried it once at midnight during a road trip because everything else was closed and confidence was high. What followed was twelve hours of deeply personal consequences that fundamentally changed my relationship with both sushi and optimism. the sushi did not survive the review. Neither did my faith in late night decision making.

There’s an episode of Scrubs where JD interacts with a patient about that JD: maybe you should avoid eating sushi from the “Gas and Go” Patient: it came free with the fill up! [I don’t do it justice.](https://youtu.be/2NY9YOcY3_E?si=YvXU6KMaUffUWCfj)

Rule number 7 of roadtripping, "do not eat gas station sushi" 😂😂

Or Dutch supermarket sushi. Rice is too vinegary and dry, and the fish absolutely tasteless.

IndividualLoquat3777 Apr 3, 2026 +9
Surströmming (fermented herring). Opened a can once, my whole apartment smelled for a week. Never again.

CommunismSavesLives Apr 3, 2026 +5
I tried it the “proper” way with the flatbread, potatoes, yogurt and stuff. Let’s just say, that stuff was definitely from a time where they ate it out of necessity. There’s no making that fish taste good.

How can you know about the food and not that you need to open it outside, under water.

liver's actually pretty good if it's not overcooked to death, most people just had it prepared terribly as kids.
8
Humble_Flow_3665 Apr 3, 2026 +4
Genuinely. Earnestly. I thought you meant my actual liver, the one inside my body, could have been prepared terribly when I was a kid. Like, childhood alcoholism had prepared my liver incorrectly for life...
4
xXxFADIxXx Apr 3, 2026 +3
A lot of people are saying, "Liver, you can drop your recipe.
3
chalk_in_boots Apr 3, 2026 +1
Ok, I've got a couple. Chicken livers, make sure they're all similar size, if some are too big cut up. Follow exactly the same process as if you were making fried chicken (dredge, egg, breadcrumbs) and shallow fry until done. Airfryer with some spray oil works too. Option two, put a small amount of butter in a saucepan. Add lots of garlic, thyme, sage. If you partake, you can add cognac but I don't, I prefer some orange zest and juice. Cook, moving the liver around so it doesn't get any kind of crust. When cooked, allow to cool a bit but not fully so the butter stays liquid. Put in food processor/blender, run until it's a paste. When you put that in the fridge it'll firm up but not solidify and can be put on toast. Congratulations, you just made like 1kg of pate for the cost 75g would be if you bought it.
1
ARC_32 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Which? I love chicken liver but hate beef liver.
2
Questjon Apr 3, 2026 +1
I personally think pig liver is the tastiest even though it's the cheapest.
1
mixalhs006 Apr 3, 2026 +1
This is actually the first time I saw people not liking it, everyone I know loves it.
1
mmaster23 Apr 3, 2026 +1
She's like "Why would I want to eat liver? I don't even like liver!"  I'm like "No, I said 'delivered'"  She's like "I heard you say liver!"  I'm like "I should know what I said..."  She's like "Whatever, I just don't want any liver!"

Bitter Melon. It is probably the most appropriately named food of all time.
8
resnonverba1 Apr 3, 2026 +4
I'm a fan.
4
lwp775 Apr 3, 2026 +3
It’s very good to control sugar level. Saw a white guy wearing an FDNY with a bag of them in an Indian grocery store on Long Island. I asked him if he was buying them to control his sugar level. He said yes, they work better than prescriptions his doctor gave him.
3
theassassintherapist Apr 3, 2026 +4
Dehydrate and dry thinly sliced bitter melon until crispy. Ground/grind it to dust. Buy empty medicine capsules and fill it to the brim with the powder. Chug them like blood sugar pills without having to actually taste it.
4
lwp775 Apr 3, 2026 +3
My father used to blend them with turmeric and ginger, add some water and drink it.
3
resnonverba1 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Wow, that's so interesting.
1
anonoffswitch_ Apr 3, 2026 +1
I use bitter melon tea for this, doesn't actually taste too bad.
1
YakElectronic6713 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I love them too.
1
shaheen1743 Apr 3, 2026 +1
In india,we make it with adding jaggery and all its superb tasting ,if you want I can share the recipe try it
1
GrassFunny868 Apr 3, 2026 +8
Canned Beets. I’m convinced they aren't actually food, but just circles of dirt-flavored gelatin. Even the smell when you open the can is like a damp basement that hasn't been aired out since 1994. No amount of goat cheese or balsamic glaze can hide the fact that I’m eating a literal slice of soil.
8
Full_Cup_Queen Apr 3, 2026 +7
Durian. I tried it once, never again. I also can't take the smell
7
-braquo- Apr 3, 2026 +1
I could never get past the smell to try it.
1
A7xWicked Apr 3, 2026 +1
I tried durian mochi once because I thought I might be able to ease into it that way... Boy was I wrong

Gildor12 Apr 3, 2026 +7
Are you one of those people to whom it tastes of soap?
7
woodsy-97 Apr 3, 2026 +5
Unfortunately, yes. Heard people say it tastes great tho lol
5
Gildor12 Apr 3, 2026 +3
Yes, I love it.
3
HandsomeRobb23 Apr 3, 2026 +2
What does it taste like to you? It’s soap to me. But I’ve always been curious. And every one I ask says a different thing lol.
2
Stelliferous8955 Apr 3, 2026 +3
I wish everyone would just say it tastes like a sinful, disgusting herb and that I'm not missing out on anything lmao
3
JFKsBrain Apr 3, 2026 +2
It’s kind of tangy and citrusy. Delicious on Mexican food. Perfect for accenting other flavors/ foods. It’s strong so a little goes a long way.
2
Gildor12 Apr 3, 2026 +1
It tastes slightly metallic and “green” really compliments spicy food. I miss it if it isn’t there.
1
blind-bambi Apr 3, 2026 +1
Allergic. Blisters, can’t breathe but I really like it.

There’s a reason they smother it in butter and onions. Because liver tastes awful.
5
sicksquid75 Apr 3, 2026 +5
Almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts. Allergic reaction. Not too bad but itchy ears, throat and eyes.
5
fly-bye Apr 3, 2026 +3
Me too and it has gotten worse as I've aged. I used to be ok with almonds and pecans but no more. I love them so much. Makes me sad.
3
Limestonecastle Apr 3, 2026 +1
walnuts and penauts are fiberglass apparently
1
theassassintherapist Apr 3, 2026 +5
Crayfish. After dissecting them in high school biology decades ago, I still get gag reflex and reminded of the smell of Formaldehyde whenever I attempt to eat them.
5
enragedsquirrels Apr 3, 2026 +5
Cucumber. So deceptive. It smells and looks refreshing but tastes like deceit.
5
Longjumping_Bar_7457 Apr 3, 2026 +12
Interesting i always thought they tasted refreshing
12
enragedsquirrels Apr 3, 2026 +1
That’s certainly what I’ve heard. I’m so disappointed I’m missing out.
1
Longjumping_Bar_7457 Apr 3, 2026 +2
That’s how I feel about watermelon
2
enragedsquirrels Apr 3, 2026 +1
Me, too! Finally, a kindred spirit.
1
Sp00kygorl Apr 3, 2026 +3
Hate cucumbers, but love pickles
3
enragedsquirrels Apr 3, 2026 +1
Oh I loathe pickles but love pickle spread?! Pickles are popular. I’ve seen them sold as a single product with some sort of spice flavouring, have you tried tha?
1
tylerchu Apr 3, 2026 +1
They taste like green water. Same with lettuce.
1
DoughnutMaestro Apr 3, 2026 +1
Sounds like the Best description of celery I ever heard “like crunchy water with hair in”
1
enragedsquirrels Apr 3, 2026 +1
I like lettuce. I especially like rocket. But nah cucumber is diabolical. Maybe I have some sort of cucumber gene such as with cilantro/coriander.

2
CommunismSavesLives Apr 3, 2026 +5
Caviar. Tasted like salty fish water. Like what I always imagined those “salmon egg” fish baits tasted like. The price of it is not justified by the taste of it. That’s for sure. I love tinned fish and stuff too so I was surprised I didn’t care for it. Many people swear by it.
5
quirksnglasses Apr 3, 2026 +3
I actually crave it. Totally respect if its not your thing, but did you try proper caviar (sturgeon, ossetra, etc.)? Unless you’re getting something decent, it’s actually very bad
3
NewGuyFromDyom Apr 3, 2026 +5
Palm heart, liver, my own nut.
5
taezlabrah Apr 3, 2026 +3

Horse meat. The meat tastes so bad, AND horse are better alive.
4
Andromeen Apr 3, 2026 +11
Fried food. Fried chicken, fried potatoes, etc. I'm almost 40, and my body can't take that anymore. I love the taste, but I just have huge problems afterwards... Turns out ALL the fast-food restraunts just re-use the same oil to fry, over and over again, and after a while it just starts being the most toxic stuff possible, pretty much. Its not the same as using oil just once, to fry once.
11
You_Cant_Win_This Apr 3, 2026 +10
It's not "the most toxic stuff possible" when you use the same oil multiple times. It actually hugely depends on the oil itself and what temperature you fry in. Of course eventually it needs to be changed, but there are specific parameters which have been studied and show when used oil is no longer viable and becomes cancirogenic. There are many videos on YouTube that shows scientific test including different fast food places.

Can confirm the reusing oil part. I work in a deli and we reuse it until it gets a little dark. Then we pump out the old and put in new.
3
JustAnotherParticle Apr 3, 2026 +1
Can you fry your own chicken at home? Or air fry?
1
cuntsmacking Apr 3, 2026 +3
Cheese, I'm a low tier lactose intolerant person , can handle milk somewhat but cheese absolutely destroys my guts.
3
Gildor12 Apr 3, 2026 +4
Usually the other way around. Making milk into cheese, particularly hard cheese removes the lactose. Aged cheddar for example has practically no lactose
4
theYeti21 Apr 3, 2026 +3
Harder the cheese the lower the lactose, Parmesan for example is essentially lactose free
3
cuntsmacking Apr 3, 2026 +2
Sorry i needed to add some context here, I'm indian so we have the fresh cheese called paneer, it wrecks me.
2
Gildor12 Apr 3, 2026 +1
Now I get it. Thanks
1
-braquo- Apr 3, 2026 +1
Interesting. I'm also lactose intolerant person, but it's not very bad. I can do cheese without taking a lactaid, but I can't drink milk or have ice cream without a pill.
1
utrangerbob Apr 3, 2026 +3
Scorpions and Seahorses... I didn't realize how boney those damn things are. I was like these are fried, how bad could they be? Bad... I don't think Seahorses have any meat... Also, those stupid paqui spicy challenge chips. The heat was bad but I managed. It's the taste of those damn chips that was absolutely disgusting. They're bitter, dry, and oh all night an the next day you're paying for it on the toilet.
3
Any-Jellyfish5003 Apr 3, 2026 +2
Where did you try seahorses? I never knew that was something people ate

Squid
3
-braquo- Apr 3, 2026 +3
I HATE squid and octopus. I lived in the Philippines for a few years. I had fresh caught and fried calimari and it was just not good. I tried it from several different restaurants, I tried it cooked by our housekeeper who was a fantastic cook. I tried it prepared in different ways and I just never liked it.

Grapefruit. In primary school, each day we'd have to try new fruits and vegetables which we didn't normally eat. My friend next to me ate some and all of a sudden I feel a weird sensation all over my body. He'd vommited all over me and I had to go home. Will never eat that shit again but got a day off school!

Oysters one Valentine's day a few years ago me and my partner went out for dinner. We went to a Japanese restaurant, for some reason the owner got oysters, and he was shucking them himself, just behind the counter where the till is. The waitresses were just staying away. My partner being a chef, went up to see what was happening, told him how to do it properly. Then the owner forced oysters on all the couples in the restraunt. This is before we even had the chance to order.

Choco Taco because it’s discontinued or Oriental flavor Maruchan Instant noodles. It is not the same as the soy sauce that replaced it. Soy sauce though okay is a manhole downgrade from the experience of oriental. All because the name offend some people they had to remove it from shelves. It could’ve been rebranded removing the oriental name but keeping the same flavor under a different name. Orange chicken but in a blue package. It’s not the worse idea but soy sauce? Such a shame.

Seaside cockles. My dad died when I was a teenager and my mum decided we should go to the seaside a few days later to cheer us up (it must’ve worked for her because she remarried within the year) we were walking along the beach an she insisted on buying me some cockles swimming in vinegar despite the fact I’d never tried them and hadn’t been able to eat more than dry toast in nearly a week since I’d had the call that his heart just stopped while watching tv. She insisted I eat them and I tried but they were rubbery and squishy and tasted so strong I immediately threw up in the sand, repeatedly. I was on my knees sobbing while profusely vomiting into a hurriedly dug hole. I’ll never forget it and all the whelk and cockle stalls at the seaside make my stomach flip over.

It was on the hotpot buffet selection. There is no way I could personally wash it. They take all the ingredients I select in a bowl and boil it with a broth that I choose. Thankfully the broth and other ingredients were fine but this intestine was terrible when I tried to eat it.
