There’s also Chopper the talking reindeer played by Mikaela Hoover, & reindeer have hooves. The casting department is just messing with us at this point.

Same, mostly because I used to watch all the late night reruns of that show when I was younger. I think it was nick at nite

I'm slightly younger than you. Because I have to keep reminding myself that she's actually also a live-action actor and not just the voice of Leela

Jamie Lee Curtis was actually supposed to play Kureha but couldn't make the filming dates work since they filmed in South Africa.
5
KR_Blade Mar 20, 2026 +9
Jamie's a HUGE One Piece fan, so she may have another chance to join the series sometime down the line. me, im wondering if we'll eventually get to see pro wrestler Minoru Suzuki make a cameo appearance on the live action series sometime, he's a huge fan of the franchise as well, and is actually good friends with the creator of One Piece, one of the reasons why he appeared on a episode of the anime as well
9

Whoever is casting One Piece deserves a raise. It’s crazy to me how many perfect and instantly iconic castings they had for non-main characters characters. Buggy, Zeff, Garp, Helmeppo, Hireluk, Cureha, Mr. 3, the Paint Lady whose name escapes me, and friggin Mihawk
276
NativeMasshole Mar 20, 2026 +115
Whoa whoa whoa wait. Why you calling Buggy a "non-main" character? He's clearly the secret protagonist and strongest pirate on the sea!
115
Jaijoles Mar 20, 2026 +36
I mean, Buggy will be king of the pirates. Zero doubt in my mind.

King-Of-Throwaways Mar 20, 2026 +42
I was holding my breath for who they would cast as Bon Clay for season 3, and then they went with Cole Escola who is probably the most qualified possible casting in the world.

self-conscious-Hat Mar 20, 2026 +15
STRAW BOOOYYY!!!
15
PayneTrain181999 Mar 21, 2026 +5
That’s about as good a fancast as Jack O’Connell as Doflamingo
5
Mr-Suplex Mar 20, 2026 +2
I did not know that, that's a great casting!
2
kenrichardson Mar 20, 2026 +28
Miss Goldenweek, and yes, the casting on her was amazing, too. That actress originated Lydia Deetz in the Broadway Beetlejuice and pulls off creepy doll like nobody's business.
28
Morgan-Moonscar Mar 20, 2026 +9
THAT's who she was! I couldn't place the face (at least while she was a redhead in One Piece instead of goth)
9
snakebit1995 Mar 21, 2026 +6
They also made the perfect changes to make that character work better especially for the actress playing her In the manga and anime Miss Goldenweek is basically a nonfactor she’s just there to play the straight man to Mr.3’s absurdist art related comedy Basically turning her into the classic “creepy murder kid” both allows her to stand on her own as more than a comedic sidekick and provides a logical reason for “why is this teenager so high ranking in this clandestine assassin organization”
6
Will-Of-D-3D2Y Mar 20, 2026 +12
And more importantly, pretty much no stunt casting. It would be easy to hire famous actors to play "big" characters like Shanks or Mihawk, but instead the casting has been very inspired and really lets the actors bring their characters to life. Even bigger names like Katey Sagal or David Dastmalchian disappear into their characters completely. It is an incredible feat.
12
PhanThief95 Mar 20, 2026 +12
Same with Joe Manganiello as Crocodile. I am still surprised at how he perfectly replicated Crocodile’s laugh.
12
Pliskin14 Mar 20, 2026 +9
Joe Manganiello is a nerd, so not a surprise he finds his place in One Piece.
9
PayneTrain181999 Mar 21, 2026 +2
He hosted DND sessions with some of the cast
2
GhostOfLight Mar 20, 2026 +8
You can tell the actors are buying in to the roles they're playing. They know they need to be more *Power Rangers* fun, than *GoT* serious and they're making sure they have fun with it.
8
Rosebunse Mar 21, 2026 +1
It's actually rather interesting to compare the older cast to the younger cast for this. Not that the older cast members are bad. I think all of them have been great. But you can tell that most of them are trying for a more conventional acting style. The younger actors actually seem to be trying to replicate the "style" of an anime dub even if they can't get the classic VA's voice exactly right
1
ArchDucky Mar 20, 2026 +24
Apparently its the creator himself. He picked most of the main characters thus far. The only one that was offered the part outright was Zoro. I honestly don't think this show would have worked without Mackenyu. Getting someone that actually knows how to do the shit the character is supposed to do is special. Its what a lot of people have wanted with Batman for goddamn years now. Hes so good with a sword during the first season the stunt coordinator told him to slow down because the stunt guys couldn't keep up and he was going to hurt someone accidently.
24
MrZeddd Mar 21, 2026 +2
Yeah the actor for Smoker mentioned that Oda's approval trumps all other executives. You're only in after he said yes That's honestly super refreshing for Hollywood, we only hear stories about Hollywood execs refusing to listen to original creator these days
2
HomersApe Mar 20, 2026 +22
Mr. 9 was also amazing. It's a short role but the actor gave it everything he had. Between him and Hiriluk, they were my standouts of the season.

GunShowZero Mar 20, 2026 +12

GunShowZero Mar 21, 2026 +1

1
m0nk_3y_gw Mar 21, 2026 +1
> Mr. 9 was also amazing. lol, I had too look him up because I had the character confused with Mr. 13 (the sea otter in pajamas)
1
PhanThief95 Mar 20, 2026 +9
Same goes for Miss All Sunday. I did not think anyone could perfectly capture what makes her character special. Lera Abova did.
9
PayneTrain181999 Mar 21, 2026 +3
You need a combination of mysterious aura, correct vibes, and being drop dead gorgeous. Lera went 3/3.
3
I_just_made Mar 21, 2026 +4
The Buggy casting is absolutely perfect. This episode from season 2 was also incredibly well done. I don't know the story, so I can't say I was prepared for what was going to happen... But the way they told the story between Chopper and the doc was so good.
4
keeleon Mar 20, 2026 +6
This show is dumb as hell, but the casting, choreography and costume dept deserve awards. It literally is "live action anime".

Even the Reindeer they got looked just like Tony T.
1
heyboyhey Mar 21, 2026 +1
Of the main cast my favorites are Usopp and Luffy. Robin seems great too and Nami is good. Chopper is perfect. Sanji and Zoro both lack some of the insane aura they have in the original imo, but I imagine casting martial arts characters is a lot more challenging.
1
Mapex Mar 20, 2026 +175
I haven’t seen or read One Piece outside of the live action. So when Katey Sagal’s character introduced the Doctor as some quack, I expected some hilarious hijinks and tbh a compete idiot who I’d hate. How the episode unfolded and how loving and nurturing and selfless Dr. Hiriluk was portrayed made him easily my favorite character in the show so far. And then the exploding cherry blossoms as the “cure-all” that he created? F***, man. Still in tears days after watching.
175
NativeMasshole Mar 20, 2026 +109
One Piece became a global phenomenon for a reason. It's understandably been memed to death for being overly long and entirely goofy, but when it's peak, it is PEAK. I hope they find a way to film the whole series.
109
HutSutRawlson Mar 20, 2026 +61
The goofiness is intrinsic to why it works. The silly moments are what makes the characters so loveable, especially compared to other shonen characters who tend to be one-dimensional tough guys.
61
dexter30 Mar 20, 2026 +16
The goofiness also helped with the adaptation in a way that other animes suffer. Like cowboy bebop for example is suppose to be this smooth cool space western. But if you try to tell that story in live action, it's a herculean task. Things are gonna look weird, characters scenes and settings are gonna be off. It's a cowboy story set in a world where horses and newspapers are replaced with ships and computers. One piece, inherently is a show about a kid made of rubber who goes out on adventure with no basic self preservation or planning skills. The original audience kind of expects a lil campy-ness. And anything less is a failure.
16
Rosebunse Mar 21, 2026 +2
Someone explained it as being an example of Uncanny Valley. With something like Cowboy Bebop or Death Note your brain is telling you something js off, but you aren't really sure what. Everything looks just a bit too normal. One Piece manages to skip over the Valley because it's ao weird and cartoonist that your brain has no trouble.
2
theonewhoknock_s Mar 21, 2026 +5
It's weird how well the mix of goofiness and serious moments works. It doesn't feel like it should be possible, yet it works perfectly.
5
DeathFlameStroke Mar 20, 2026 +16
Biggest comic book in the world, and one of the longest running too
16
Elprede007 Mar 21, 2026 +1
The only failing of the live action imo is the effects. I’m not sure what portion of the budget they get, but they are often very weak in the effects department. Just to compare shows, Game of Thrones the blackwater bay episode was a third of the cost of the average onepiece episodes. I’m just confused to the point where I suspect there may even be fraud. Like, the sets aren’t so intensely amazing that I assume the budget got sucked up there. The actors aren’t all A-list actors that cost a ton, you would assume effects is getting the lion’s share of the bduget for a show like this. I love the storylines, but it’s being let down by the effects. But goddamn the costume department is killing it
1
TheYellowChicken Mar 20, 2026 +47
Welcome to One Piece. One of the characters with the most emotional and tragic backstories in the series is named Señor Pink. He dresses up like a giant baby, with a bib, pacifier, rattle, diaper, and hat.
47
Ancient-Bat1755 Mar 20, 2026 +13
I saw a guy dress like that at Ren Fair a few years back with “i’m a baby” in lipstick on his chest barefoot. I didn’t bother to explain to kids, just here are some cheese curds.
13
TheYellowChicken Mar 20, 2026 +9
That's sounds like Señor Pink alright
9

Señor Peak.

SpaceOdysseus23 Mar 20, 2026 +14
Just wait until it makes you cry over an 'inanimate' object down the line.
14
ewingking123 Mar 20, 2026 +9
Drum Island is one of my favorite arcs from the series, just because of how well everything comes together. Kureha is a doctor with skill, but no care while Hiriluk cares, but has training to help. With Chopper taking the best from both with dreams to be a "cure all". Also fun fact Choppers hooves are shaped like cherry blossom petals in the manga. This was unintentional on the authors part, but he loved how it all came together.
9
DreamLunatik Mar 20, 2026 +12
Watch the anime. It will have you crying more than you thought a cartoon ever should.
12
captainrex Mar 20, 2026 +12
Robin’s backstory was the one that hit me the hardest in that regard
12
DreamLunatik Mar 20, 2026 +9
Same with Sanji’s backstory. So sad
9
tfhermobwoayway Mar 21, 2026
I mean if you have the live action, why bother with the anime? It’s just an anime. This is prestige TV.
0
DreamLunatik Mar 21, 2026 +2
Why wouldn’t you watch the anime if you like the live action?
2
tfhermobwoayway Mar 21, 2026
Because what are you getting from the anime that you couldn’t get from the live action?
0
DreamLunatik Mar 21, 2026 +3
Honestly, so so much.
3
pharaohsanders Mar 21, 2026 +1
The adaptation is fun. The anime (Japanese voice actors) is the greatest adventure story ever told.
1
suppadelicious Mar 20, 2026 +8
Oda has a way with creating a wacky character and then dropping a devastating backstory afterwards. I’m still not over Senior Pink.
8
lavenk7 Mar 21, 2026 +1
That’s basically all anime lol
1
Nessidy Mar 20, 2026 +88
Such an amazing speech, Mark's acting really elevated this episode

I got a bit choked up that episode, I'll be honest.
225
2347564 Mar 20, 2026 +102
They handled his relationship with chopper so well. This speech is even not as impactful without that context. When he said “he is my son”, that’s when it got me.
102
ConfidenceKBM Mar 21, 2026 +3
It's incredibly reassuring that that line (which is the best line in season 2) is not from the manga/anime. The live action writers really do have some sauce.
3
Agent_Tardigrade Mar 21, 2026 +10
It is in the manga (chapter 145, pg 8)

Marineford will wreck them.
23
iner22 Mar 20, 2026 +16
Even before all that, we have the departure from Alabasta to get through. And that's probably next season...
16
PayneTrain181999 Mar 21, 2026 +2
Alabasta is confirmed to be the focus of next season. So it probably ends with >!Robin joining the crew!<
2
gointhrou Mar 21, 2026 +1
>!Robin only joins officially in Ennies Lobby. The real tear jerker at the end of Alabasta is the Straw Hats showing their X’s to Vivi as they leave.!<
1
LeithLeach Mar 20, 2026 +1
Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like this will be the series finale?
1
previouslyonimgur Mar 20, 2026 +1
I’m not even sure they could get that far
1
LeithLeach Mar 20, 2026 +2
I mean at least they've already cast Ace
2
HutSutRawlson Mar 21, 2026 +2
Ace appears in Alabasta.
2
HutSutRawlson Mar 21, 2026 +1
I highly doubt it. >!Ending at Marineford would mean the series would end on a massive cliffhanger of the Straw Hats being separated for several years. Which would mean they’d need to get all the way to return to Sabaody for a satisfying ending… which then wouldn’t be satisfying because it’s really the start of an entire new adventure.!< The most sensible ending would be >!after Enies Lobby, with the crew sailing off on their new ship.!< That would still take probably 3-4 more seasons to get to.
1
2347564 Mar 21, 2026
Considering the pacing right now I don’t see a world where they go past Water 7 / Ennies Lobby. If Alabasta is Season 3, which we know it is, and that’s a major arc being cut to fit into eight episodes, so that’s 217 chapters in three seasons. 430 chapters, at the same pace, would be six, and that would be the end of Ennies Lobby. I think 6 seasons is a more realistic goal for them to shoot for with the age of the cast and production times. Marineford finishes at Chapter 580.
0
LeithLeach Mar 21, 2026 +1
I have some doubts that they’re going to keep the same pace and follow every arc. Is it confirmed that they are doing Skypiea?
1
2347564 Mar 21, 2026 +2
Nothings confirmed, I was just sort of speculating at the current pace. I hope they do it! It’s so good.
2
LeithLeach Mar 21, 2026 +1
I guess it depends on how many episodes they do for the Alabasta and the next couple of arcs. If they move along quick enough I could see Water 7 / Ennies Lobby as the end of season 4 / beginning of 5.

No. You're thinking of Robin Thomas

This and his speech to chopper about the flag always get me.

PayneTrain181999 Mar 21, 2026 +3
Then Chopper goes and gets the mushroom with the same visual…

Poor Chopper...I mean, I get it from where he's coming from. Of course he got the two symbols confused! That should have been the first thing he was taught.

I thought an unfortunate part of last season was that the concluding Arlong arc felt kind of weak because they had to cut stuff. This season, they rectified that. Those last episodes that made up the Chopper arc were great, and maybe the strongest of the show. Harelik as Hiriluk might be the standout of the season.

If they ever do a new back to the future (I Doubt it'll happen) but I think he'd make a good doc

Hayterfan Mar 20, 2026 +9
It won't happen as long as Robert Zemeckis lives. Zemeckis is currently 74.

I was thinking about how if this was 25-30 years earlier Christopher Lloyd would kill this role

I am *obsessed* with One Piece. I immediately want season 3 because I want more of the crew and their adventures!

Same, there were moments when his voice even sounded similar.

James_Parnell Mar 20, 2026 +7
Actually Milos from Seinfeld. The crappy tennis player

He does look like him.

jhumbug Mar 20, 2026 +2
It is him

Mark Harelik, actually. He also played Dr. Gabelhauser in The Big Bang Theory.

Simply incredible episode. Probably the best of season 1 and 2

I love this show so much… I sincerely hope Netflix keeps funding this until it catches up with the manga.

Was so close to tears during this moment. Three times I believe I cried when watching One Piece: Chopper's backstory, the >!Rumbar Pirates singing Binks' Brew as the remaining members die, leaving Brook alone (really hope the guy playing him in the flashback voices him, I can see a skeleton having that voice)!<, and >!Ace dying!<. I thought the latter would just be moderately sad when I got to Inc but >!the English VA for Luffy nailed how grief-stricken he was over it!<, I was not expecting it.

I haven't watched One Piece since there was like 5 characters in the cast.. Do I really need to catch up on a show with like 10,000 episodes? God dammit.

No you don't. Just watch this version (that's partly what it is for) or wait for the anime Remake. This show condenses like 20 episodes into 1 (in a good way, it cuts out a lot of the bs) or the anime remake they claim will skip all filler and focus on the main arcs and developments you really need to see. That's not out yet but starts soon, 2027 maybe? I just see random reports and i'm not a fan like that, alabasta is where it lost me as a kid because I too didn't like 500+ characters and how goofy and fantastical it became. I liked how it started with more grounded pirate world with just one kid and his enemies having some goofy powers here and there. It just didn't keep me so I too jumped off and I'm not mad about not watching 1000+ episodes either. If you're interested enough though, watch this show or the new anime to get caught up. And / or read or watch synopsis or summary videos.

I didn't realize how little faith I had in this show until this scene. I never thought it could work in live action but it really did. I always thought it would look too silly and fantastic but it didn't, at least not in a way that got in the way

I know Mark. Great guy. Used to play in a band with his brother. He’s always played small parts in tv shows and what not. Milosh was a memorable one for him as well. But it was really cool to see him get to shine in a bigger part. He killed it. For me at least.

I'm curious on the direction of the live action series. I don't think it will go beyond 5 seasons if they are lucky even though they have enough material to do a lot more. The anime and the manga can and have kept going but how will the live action series reach a conclusion, will they make up their own version of what the one piece is

I started following One Piece when I was 19. I'm 42 now. I'm really glad more people are now getting into it. One of the most epic stories ever told.

goliathfasa Mar 21, 2026 +1
Kind of disappointed with his lack of nose, same with Kureha. But more than made up for it with the acting. Guess all the nose budget went to Nico Robin.

"Don't you know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?" Great minds think alike, I guess.

More great casting. One Piece is killing it, looking forward to Alabasta!

Truemeathead Mar 21, 2026 +1
I love the real sets and props instead of green screen and cgi for every dang scene. It’s old school Hollywood shit at its finest. If they don’t win some technical Emmies for sets, costumes, and props then there is no point in the dumb things.

EvilHwoarang Mar 21, 2026 +1
Is that...MILOS?!?!?

I mean, it's a very campy show based on a campy anime.
19
Alexexy Mar 20, 2026 +11
Show is campy for sure. Its not campy in a bad way, like its just genuinely goofy.
11
Jazzlike_Rutabaga Mar 21, 2026 +2
its about a rubberman who wants to be king of the pirates. it’s incredibly goofy

keeleon Mar 20, 2026 +3
Its honestly surprising how hard everyone goes for the silliest scripts. Say what you will about the rest of it, but no one is phoning in their performances.

One_jeff Mar 20, 2026
That speech was done very well. It should have gotten more notice around the top scenes of the week when it came out. Or it did and I just missed it.

So much better than the anime. Television really is the best medium.
