Which film, in your opinion, showcases an actor at their best?

Posted by Blenda33

Not necessarily the best movie ever; but one where the performance of that actor is arguably the best or a personal favorite for you, of their career. Or perhaps; a performance which resonates with you. Examples for me are, Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight but tinged with such sadness. And Emma Thompson, in ‘that scene’ in Love actually, (after she realises Alan Rickman has cheated.) What are your gems?

Nicholas Cage in Raising Arizona. I dislike Cage's acting and I don't like any of his other films that I've seen, but Raising Arizona is one of my top five favorite movies and that's largely because of Cage.

Funny story - Nic Cage didn’t like working with the Coens because they didn’t let him improvise as much as he wanted. He called them “authoritarian”.
10
iz-Moff Apr 2, 2026 +12
That's funny, cause i always think of Cage in particular as the kind of actor who needs a good director to constrain him a bit.

>the kind of actor who needs a good director to constrain him a bit. Or a lot!

Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. Just a few minutes of screentime, legendary delivery of his lines.

motophiliac Apr 2, 2026 +3
His conversation with Markinson and Kendrick when they're talking about transferring Santiago is excellent. He lived and breathed authority for that entire scene. Actually for pretty much the entire movie.

In Bruges really made me change how i thought of Colin Ferrell. Before watching it I didn’t really care for him, he always seemed to have a hammy role in hammy action movies. In Bruges definitely showed he had some real comedic chops and dramatic range.

Audacious_insolence Apr 2, 2026 +12
The multitude of facial expressions he does by simply moving his eyebrows around a bit are completely stunning. You can clearly see every emotion intended behind the faces he makes. Dude has insane range

Banshees of Inisherin did it for me with Ferrell. Touching and sad but incredibly comedic.

Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. Brilliant performance in an amazing movie… even if watching it is like having a 2 hour panic attack.

Awkward_Bison_267 Apr 2, 2026 +35
Raul Julia as M.Bison in “Street Fighter”. And I’m not stating this out of pity because he passed, no one could’ve carried that movie like he did.
35
patricksaurus Apr 2, 2026 +14
He played a bad guy who was self aware that he was the bad guy and took delight in it… corny humor, inflated ego, exaggerated villainy. It really is like a character from Shakespeare. All the more impressive because it was in a “so bad it’s good” movie.
14
Awkward_Bison_267 Apr 2, 2026 +3
Here’s the thing, he didn’t think he was the bad guy. Go YouTube the “Bisonopolis” speech. He thought he was taking over the world to make it better! Bison was nuts! And Raul Julia played it perfectly.
3
patricksaurus Apr 2, 2026 +3
That is the single best piece of movie trivia I’ve ever heard.
3
Bigtits38 Apr 2, 2026 +7
I’ll see that bet and raise with Addams Family.
7
xXSpookyXx Apr 2, 2026 +13
The chemistry he had with Anjelica Houston was incredible. The entire idea behind the Addams family is that having an outward appearance that is unusual doesn't mean you can't be a good person, and Gomez and Morticia relationship are central to that. They are a devoted couple who are also engaged and loving parents. So much of that performance is carried in the way Gomez looks at Morticia. Raul Julia somehow deliberately amps the performance up to ridiculous levels for laughs, but maintains authenticity at the same time. It's hard to overstate just how difficult it is to attempt both things at the same time and land them.
13
Awkward_Bison_267 Apr 2, 2026 +3
The only issue there is everyone was good in the Addams Family. Raul Julia was great but he didn’t have to carry the movie.

I usually cannot stand Tom Cruise as an actor or generally as a person, but absolutely thought he was brilliant in Tropic Thunder and (I’m probably one in only a handful of people with this next one) as Lestat in Interview With A Vampire

dude went full method actor and basically destroyed his body for that role. lost like 60 pounds and looked like a walking skeleton but it made the whole insomniac thing feel so real and disturbing. bales always been intense but that level of commitment was just insane

And then immediately afterwards beefed up for batman
6
IHKAS1984 Apr 2, 2026 +1
It's even more than that. Bale did Reign of Fire immediately before The Machinist, so he went from buff hunk to emaciated ghoul to buff hunk in the span of \~3 years [The Hunk-Ghoul-Hunk pipeline](https://i.imgur.com/OqPKXFQ.png)

Oh, I forgot one of the finest... if any youngsters out there have never seen the Finale Episode of the TV series M**A**S**H** (Shot like a movie - at the time most watched show in the history of TV)... then if you can find it be prepared for a performance from Alan Alda that will be used by acting schools for decades to come.

Hugh Jackman in The Prestige. Robert Angier is a tragic character, often thought of as the villain, but really he's just a broken man whom only has his tricks left, but giving what he has over to true magic is a deal with death and sooner or later, it ruins him. Jackman's portrayal is a powerful depiction of a man who loses everything and then comes face to face with his own mortality, and with his own demons. You can see it in his eyes that somewhere along the line, has a very sobering, very gradual revelation that he has truly lost himself and the man he was.

Jackman in The Son as well. You can feel him feeling so helpless.

Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence (1974). Cassavetes basically built the film around watching her fall apart and reassemble in real time. There's a dinner table scene where she's trying so hard to hold it together for her husband's coworkers and you can see every single thing happening behind her eyes simultaneously. No other performance has made me feel like I was intruding on something private the way that one does.

Al Pacino - Dog Day Afternoon Al has so many brilliant performances, but everything I love about him is wrapped up in Sonny. He’s electric, a live wire. …yet also vulnerable, decent, and funny.  It’s one of the greatest performances ever  I’ll also mention Scarecrow, which is a completely different role for him.  Al’s character, Lion, is this gentle, goofy, naive soul who worms his way into gruff Max’s (Gene Hackman ) heart - and he suffers a trauma that is unbelievably harrowing.   Afterwards, something in him had died, that bouncy, silly guy wasn’t really there anymore…the light had completely gone out of his eyes.  It’s then compounded on later, and it’s just beyond devastating. Al’s portrayal of a men who is completely broken is shattering and soul-crushing

Honestly, for me its robert pattinson in the lighthouse… its kinda raw and unsettling but also weirdly human. like u can see every little crack in how he feels without him saying much makes me wonder if its easier to notice these things when the role forces actors to be that exposed or if some people just carry that intensity naturally..

Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets. He’s a proven actor, but his portrayal of the OCD guy filled with animosity to the world was delightful. And when he was delighted by the dog who shared (or mimicked) his OCD, you could feel his soul opening up just a bit to let the sun in.

Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea. I'll be honest, when he won the Oscar I didn't fully get it. He seemed almost too understated, too flat. So I rewatched it. Then it hit me. That casual hospital corridor scene, where he's just existing in the worst moment of his life, no big speech, no dramatic breakdown. And by the time you get to that final confrontation with his wife on the street, you realize he hasn't been underacting this whole time but he's been playing a man who genuinely has nothing left inside. The performance doesn't ask you to feel sorry for him. It just shows you someone who's already accepted that he's beyond saving. That's not acting, that's disappearing into a person.

Hate on Tom Cruise all you want, but the dude rode a motorcycle off a cliff and parachuted down to a ravine below in Mission Impossible. That’s objectively badass in the absence of green screens and stunt actors.

Beneficial-Mix9484 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Tom Cruise can show a lot of emotion just in his close-ups. He's a good actor. I'm hoping for the day he plays character roles as Ethan Hawk is doing now and in recent past Cruise. could do it.
