A tourist stole a poster from their hotel and went to a labor camp for it. The US negotiated their return but the guy was returned in a vegetative state and died shortly afterwards.

I've not seen it. Is it a great watch?

It's worth seeing once. It was tops at the box office for several weeks in November and December of 1978.

probably somewhere with overcrowded prisons and weak human rights enforcement, where conditions are harsh and due process isn’t guaranteed so you’re basically at the mercy of the system

never been but I would imagine North Korean would suck.
But also any country that doesn't speak your language...would be difficult

Hard to crown a single “worst,” but a few countries are consistently mentioned for having especially harsh prison conditions — like North Korea, Eritrea, and Syria.
In places like North Korea, prison (and labor camps) can mean forced labor, extreme punishment, and almost no legal protections. In Syria, especially during and after the civil war, reports have described torture, overcrowding, and inhumane treatment. Eritrea is known for indefinite detention, often without trial, and severe conditions.
What makes these places stand out isn’t just strict laws — it’s the lack of transparency, due process, and basic human rights. In some cases, people can be detained for years without formal charges, and families may not even know where they are.
So it’s less about “worst country” and more about systems where accountability is low and prisoners have little to no protection.

OP could’ve asked ChatGPT but didn’t, he wanted humans to respond, so why are you letting AI respond for you?

Look into Pollsmoor prison in Cape Town. Ross Kemp did a documentary back in the day about the prison and since it has only gotten worse. A prison sentence in South Africa might as well be a death sentence.
