Which Sam Raimi movie do you prefer? (Evil Dead, Darkman, A Simple Man, Spider-Man, etc.)

Your choices: * [The Evil Dead](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-evil-dead/) (1981): Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. * [Crimewave](https://letterboxd.com/film/crimewave/) (1985): A pair of whacked-out cartoon-like exterminator/hitmen kill the owner of a burglar-alarm company, and stalk the partner who hired them, his wife, and a nerd framed for the murder, who tells the story in flashback from the electric chair. * [Evil Dead II](https://letterboxd.com/film/evil-dead-ii/) (1987): Ash Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack. * [Darkman](https://letterboxd.com/film/darkman/) (1990): A brilliant scientist left for dead returns to exact revenge on the people who burned him alive. * [Army of Darkness](https://letterboxd.com/film/army-of-darkness/) (1992): When Ash Williams is accidentally transported to 1300 A.D., he must retrieve the Necronomicon and battle an army of the dead in order to return home. * [The Quick and the Dead](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-quick-and-the-dead-1995/) (1995): A female gunfighter returns to a frontier town where a dueling tournament is being held, which she enters in an effort to avenge her father's death. * [A Simple Plan](https://letterboxd.com/film/a-simple-plan/) (1998): Two brothers and a friend, all blue-collar workers, come across millions of dollars in lost cash and make a plan to keep their find from the authorities, but it isn't long before complications and mistrust weave their way into the plan. * [For Love of the Game](https://letterboxd.com/film/for-love-of-the-game/) (1999): A Detroit Tigers pitcher handles personal and professional crises. * [The Gift ](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-gift/)(2000): Annabelle Wilson, a woman with psychic abilities, tries to find Jessica King, a young socialite who has mysteriously disappeared. While the search continues, she starts to suspect the townspeople. * [Spider-Man](https://letterboxd.com/film/spider-man/) (2002): After being bitten by a genetically-modified spider, a shy teenager gains spider-like abilities that he uses to fight injustice as a masked superhero and face a vengeful enemy. * [Spider-Man 2](https://letterboxd.com/film/spider-man-2/) (2004): Peter Parker is beset with troubles in his failing personal life as he battles a former brilliant scientist named Otto Octavius. * [Spider-Man 3](https://letterboxd.com/film/spider-man-3/) (2007): A strange black entity from another world bonds with Peter Parker and causes inner turmoil as he contends with new villains, temptations, and revenge. * [Drag Me to Hell](https://letterboxd.com/film/drag-me-to-hell/) (2009): An ambitious loan officer must find a way to shatter a curse that threatens her soul with damnation. * [Oz the Great and Powerful](https://letterboxd.com/film/oz-the-great-and-powerful/) (2013): A small-time magician is swept away to an enchanted land and is forced into a power struggle among three witches. * [Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness](https://letterboxd.com/film/doctor-strange-in-the-multiverse-of-madness/) (2022): Doctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others. * [Send Help](https://letterboxd.com/film/send-help/) (2026): When an employee and her insufferable boss become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash, they must overcome past grievances and work together to make it out alive.

*Army of Darkness* It holds a special nostalgic place, because it was my first introduction to Raimi and made me look into his other stuff.

Same. Plus the lines. The sheer lines! “Listen up you primitive screw heads. This… is my BOOMSTICK!”

It was a perfect showcase for Bruce Campbell's brilliance(and his chin). Definitely my favorite Raimi flick. Hell it's one of my favorite flicks period.

I watched this a billion times as a kid before ever finding out it was the third entry in a trilogy. I'm a fan of them all now.

Me too. I remember having a sleepover with my best friend and mum rented it out, saying how popular the Evil Dead movies were when she was younger. We both loved it and on Monday at school we were saying to each other, "Little goody two-shoes."

TheShadyGuy Mar 27, 2026 +1
It made it into the zeitgeist to the point where people didn't even know that Duke was quoting it!

A Simple Plan is a masterpiece. But I really like almost all his work.
28
BenntPitts Mar 27, 2026 +5
I just saw this movie for the first time a few weeks ago. Absolutely gut wrenching movie and holy shit can Billy Bob act. I mean, I know he can but this character was so complex.
5
CB2001 Mar 27, 2026 +3
“But I really like almost all of his work.” Let me guess… Not a fan of Crimewave. Don’t worry, neither are the people who worked on it. XD
3
MadAlfred Mar 27, 2026 +2
I’ve also never seen Oz the Great and Powerful or Send Help. Send Help looked fun, but I couldn’t get to the theater while it was out.
2
CB2001 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Oz The Great and Powerful is a good one. Worth checking out. I haven’t seen Send Help either.
1

A Simple Man is a pretty decent flick too.
5
OkNectarine3105 Mar 27, 2026 +2
A Simple Plan?
2
OkishUsername Mar 27, 2026 +5
In the post title OP has said “A Simple Man” and in the description used the correct title “A Simple Plan”. Most likely thinking about “Spider-Man” while typing “A Simple Plan”, turns out “A Simple Man” is also a film just not a Raimi one.
5
staplerbot Mar 27, 2026 +1
My first thought reading the title was “Of all the Coen brothers movies to mistake for a Raimi one…” before remembering A Simple Plan.
1
Kuildeous Mar 27, 2026 +28
There are some technically better movies, but I have to give my love to *Darkman*. It's campy and dark in all the right ways. This movie made great use of what my friends and I call the Raimi-cam. It's been around before *Darkman*, but goddamn, it felt like he just had to get it all out of his system in this movie. The scene where one of the stooges tells Payton that he told him everything he knew and then Payton says let's pretend you didn't as he murders him has serious "I lied" vibes from *Commando.* Just one of my favorite revenge flicks.
28
droidtron Mar 27, 2026 +9
And that goon? Ted Raimi because Sam never missed a moment to abuse his brother.
9
pikpikcarrotmon Mar 27, 2026 +3
It is absolutely wild to watch Liam Neeson embody Bruce Campbell. Extremely atypical role for him but he nails it.
3
TheShadyGuy Mar 27, 2026 +2
Bruce talks about the development of it and other camera rigs on pages 103-105 of If Chins could kill. It's delightfully low tech! Here is a photo I just snapped of it: https://imgur.com/a/l7IgnBu

Kuildeous Mar 27, 2026 +1
How could I forget his propensity to refer to Shemps?
1
TheShadyGuy Mar 27, 2026 +1
I'm still kid of shocked that I walked over and used If Chins Could Kill as a reference book here in 2026. Wacky times!

I'll never look at those Drinking Bird toys the same way again.

That callback to the toy was simply brilliant.
1
FrankMiner2949er Mar 27, 2026 +1
Aye. When I heard Sam Raimi was doing Spiderman I knew he would do a great job of it. It had that same humour as Darkman
1
kitbiggz Mar 27, 2026 +32
The Quick and the Dead for sure. A classic I can still go back and watch every couple of years. Gene Hackman was such a good Villain in this one.
32
MichelangeBro Mar 27, 2026 +11
Mine too! It feels like such a tragically underrated, or maybe just flat-out unknown movie. It's so good with such a stacked cast of stars and character actors.
11
RyanBordello Mar 27, 2026 +3
Such a stacked cast

jasenzero1 Mar 27, 2026 +2
One of my favorite westerns ever.
2
Weird_Style_1134 Mar 27, 2026 +40
evil dead 2 is peak raimi and nothing comes close tbh. the way he balances horror and comedy while still making both work is insane - like ash's hand literally trying to kill him but it's also hilarious. the camera work in that cabin is unreal too, all those dutch angles and push-ins that became his signature style. darkman is a close second though, liam neeson going absolutely unhinged as a vengeful scientist with synthetic skin was wild for 1990. i actually found a house for sale once that looked exactly like the darkman lab setup in the basement, complete with the weird lighting fixtures - almost put an offer in just for the novelty but my realtor thought i was loosing my mind

JohnnyCharisma54 Mar 27, 2026 +3
My old roommate was extremely weak with horror and I was convinced he’d love EDII for its comedy. I misremembered how actually scary it was.

Gotta tighten that mind up when you staring down the barrel of a mortgage.
1
mikeyfreshh Mar 27, 2026 +89
Evil Dead 2 might be the best horror movie ever made
89
Chickenshit_outfit Mar 27, 2026 +7
The Thing is best in my opinion, Evil Dead 2 close 2nd tied with The Exorcist
7
Kavalkasutajanimi Mar 27, 2026 +38
No. Best is The Thing.
38
Disc81 Mar 27, 2026 +8
They are so different that it's hard to compare. Both are horror movies, and outstanding movies, but one is more silly and fun and the other is serious and tense. I love them both, but I've a soft spot for the campiness of Evil Dead 2.
8
Djinnwrath Mar 27, 2026 +19
I think you're both right.

9
mikeyfreshh Mar 27, 2026 +4
It really is tough. If you asked me on the right day, I might even say They Live. I just have to give it to Halloween because it more or less invented the Slasher, which is a genre that I love
4
Djinnwrath Mar 27, 2026 +3
Wrong.
3
Da_Funk Mar 27, 2026 +8
Evil Dead 2 is a comedy.
8
mikeyfreshh Mar 27, 2026 +25
Yes it is. It's also a horror movie. A movie can be more than one genre
25
WhoStoleMyBicycle Mar 27, 2026 +14
Evil Dead was pure horror. Evil Dead 2 was horror comedy. Army of Darkness was pure comedy. It’s one of my favorite trilogies of all time because the movies are connected but so different.
14
tequilasauer Mar 27, 2026 +1
Alien.
1
fluentinsarcasm Mar 27, 2026 +29
For me it will always be between Spider-Man 2 and Evil Dead II. Spider-Man for how great the villain is and how much bigger the emotional stakes are. It has an authenticness to it that's often missing in modern Marvel and superhero content, and he escaped the trappings of his own campiness to make something that effortlessly blends drama, comedy, romance, and action. Evil Dead II because of how f****** bold it was to remake your own movie into a comedy of terrors rather than a horror film, and one that is wildly technically and practically impressive at that too. It still holds up well even today. I watched Drag Me To Hell again recently and feel it's easily his most overrated movie.

tootiredtoofurious Mar 27, 2026 +1
This is my choice as well, ED movies are a little too gnarly for me. Spider-man is great, but Drag is just a perfect movie in balancing genres, performance and direction. It’s a comfort movie for me, roller coaster paced and just makes me laugh throughout.
1
samson855 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Exactly. I played this on a movie night for a group of friends and everyone was having a blast. Just neat self contained story with the right amount of laughs and thrills.
1
Snoo_33033 Mar 27, 2026 +1
This ending is the best ending ever.
1
Seahearn4 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Drag Me to Hell is one of the most fun movie experiences I've ever had. And it was just 2 of us watching at her house. The jump-scares were so viscerally scary and then funny.
1
jaxonfairfield Mar 27, 2026 +10
ED2 is peak, but Sam Raimi's The Quick and the Dead is hugely underrated.
10
Pataconeitor Mar 27, 2026 +10
As much as I do love the Evil Dead trilogy, my favorite is The Quick and the Dead
10
cannasaurus Mar 27, 2026 +4
Army of darkness and dark man are classics of my childhood, it's hard to complete with nostalgia...
4

It’s almost impossible to finish anything with nostalgia.

I will say Spider-Man that being said I saw Send Help and thought it was really good!!
5
cerpintaxt33 Mar 27, 2026 +5
I also enjoyed it, and I thought it was funny how they tried to make Rachel McAdams look homely.

I agree. They did spice her up a bit on the beach though

BaltIndyNash Mar 27, 2026 +3
I guess maybe Simple Plan or Spider-Man 2; I don't really have a preference. Mostly I just wanted to comment to compliment the amount of work that went into gathering and linking and formatting this post. Well done!
3
StoneWall_MWO Mar 27, 2026 +3
I can admit the work to make ED2 is impressive. But as movies over art I prefer Army of Darkness and Spider-Man 2.
3
truckturner5164 Mar 27, 2026 +3
The first Evil Dead movie. I love the low-budget, crazy, DIY spirit of it, even more so after reading Bruce Campbell's autobiography "If Chins Could Kill".
3
izlerkenbirebir Mar 27, 2026 +3
I think I'll answer that question with Darkman. It's a great example of a superhero movie not adapted from comic books. That's a bit rare.
3

A Simple Plan is probably his best film But my garbage taste would re-watch Oz the Great and Powerful before anything else on the list. Yeah, yeah. I know.

Army of Darkness has always been my favorite. I don’t know if I’d ever seen a movie like that before. Raimi really leaned into his style and it absolutely worked. I don’t know how to describe it - intentionally unintentionally funny? Whatever it is I love it.

Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. The first Raimi movies I remember watching in theaters.
1
darthmcchub Mar 27, 2026 +1
Tough to pick just one. Growing up in the late 90s/early 00s that first Spider-Man movie was so good. But when 2 came out, I went to see it with my friends for one of our 11th birthdays and it blew our minds! If that wasn’t enough, finding out about Evil Dead when I was a bit older and realizing it was the same guy was crazy. I can’t pick between Spider-Man 2 and Evil Dead II.

The quick and the dead in a very close lead over darkman
1
OriginalOpposite8995 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Comparing or looking at movies or any other media for that matter, sometimes is reflected by when you first experienced it. Of Raimi's movies it's Darkman and Evil Dead 2. I saw Darkman in middle school, before I was old enough to have seen it. There is something profoundly unsettling about the vibe in that movie that just sits with you. Now Evil Dead 2 I saw as an adult (late 20's), well after becoming a Bruce Campbell fan. I went into that knowing I was going to have a good time
1
undeadsabby Mar 27, 2026 +1
My faves are Evil Dead 2, Spider-Man 2, and even Multiverse of Madness, but I want to give Oz the Great and Powerful an honorable mention: I really didn't think I'd like the film, but as a fan of the books, it's actually great fan-fiction, and it "understood the assignment," unlike Wicked. The film does a few things I appreciate: in the real-world prologue, like make the actress for Dorothy's mom and Glinda the same actress (Michelle Williams), adding some extra retcon symbolism for the 30s film (in that film, there are the farm hands, the evil neighbor, Prof. Marvel-- but who was Glinda in Dorothy's dream? Now we have that). And it shows well HOW he overtakes the witches. I really hated how Wicked made all magic faked by the wizard, but in Oz the Great and Powerful, there's magic AND science, just science wins (like A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court).
1
LyleTheAdonis Mar 27, 2026 +1
Gotta go with Spider-Man 2. To this day, arguably the best superhero movie.
1
OriginalChri Mar 27, 2026 +1
I love Raimi. Darkman is my personal fave because I saw it was it when I was 10 years old. It was so weird and entertaining.

Evil Dead 2. Perfect balance between R-rated horror and Three Stooges comedy.

deptofknowimsayings Mar 27, 2026 +1
I recently watched The Quick and the Dead for the first time and I thought that one was fantastic. Has some great performances from Hackman, Stone, Crowe, DiCaprio, and a lot of the other actors that come in for smaller roles, like Keith David, really killed it. The action is fun. The concept is good. And I love all the classic Raimi camera moves used throughout. It’s a lot of fun! All time favourite has always been Spider-Man 2 but that’s a safe pick. Evil Dead 2 is insane in the best ways. Army of Darkness is always fun. Hard to go wrong with a Raimi movie. Although some don’t work as well like Crimewave but it has its moments.

1
Sweeper1985 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Standard disclaimer I love all his work. But. Drag Me To Hell is one of the best horror movies ever made. Manages to be at once a morality tale, a dark comedy, a social commentary, and flat out just a fun and really scary monster movie.

Army of Darkness or Spider-Man 2. Don't make me pick just one!

My favs... Army of Darkness > Spiderman > Darkman But honestly they all are great.
1
VivaLaFiga46 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Dude have so many good movies in his catalogue. I mean, I feel and think that Darkman, A Simple Plan, For the Love of the Game and Drag me to Hell are underrated gems. But to answer your question, I would choose Spiderman 2. I remember watching it in a time in my life(rough times) where I related everything that was going on with what was happening to Peter Parker. It blew me away so much in those days. I realize I haven't watched that movie in a loooong time.
1
BattlinBud Mar 27, 2026 +1
The first Spider-Man was basically my entire introduction to the character as a kid, for better or worse. It was my introduction to Willem Dafoe who remains one of my favorite actors ever. It was the first DVD I ever owned. I wouldn't say it's Raimi's BEST movie, hell it's not even the best in the Spider-Man trilogy, but I've watched it more times than either of the other two, more times than I can count. It's seared into my brain. It's a comfort movie at this point.
1
StyleSquirrel Mar 27, 2026 +1
The man has made multiple 10/10 masterpieces, yet, the answer is Evil Dead 2 and it's somehow not even close.

Drag me to hell, it's so chaotic and especially bonnie aarons so damn scary even when she's in a human form and there wasn't a lag at all, everything happens fast and I love that and i saw a reel where alison would be having real life worms poured in her mouth, eventhough there was lots of cgi that's where they decided to make it real haha so yeah it's such a good watch.

A Simple Plan is my favourite, but I’ve also always loved the first two Evil Dead movies. I caught A Simple Plan on TV one day, and loved it. I hadn’t heard of it before, somehow. I then bought the book, but haven’t gotten to it. I need to read The Ruins (same author) too

Evil Dead, just for the sheer effort. Listening to the commentaries and hearing about everything they did to get that movie made is so much more interesting than the behind the scenes of any given blockbuster. Makes the movie that much more interesting to me.

I love *For Love of the Game* and think it was brilliant - and not just because Kevin Costner in baseball movies is a sure-fire win. Ties with that, of course, is *Army of Darkness*, for reasons that should be self-evident.

Evil dead. Close second is Drag me to hell. I'm still yet to watch all of his pre 2000s stuff, some of these synopsis' sound amazing.

From the ones I watched: Spider-man 1 and 2, Simple Plan and Drag me to hell are top tier. Spider-man 3 and The Quick and the dead are good, but have flaws. Evil dead 1 and 2 are weakest to me. It's just jumscares without much plot. It does well enough with the things it wants to acomplish, and effects are groundbreaking for the time, but idk, without much plot to carry it, just not my cup of tea. EDIT: forgot Darkman, he's good too, on par with SM3 and TQATD.

Not one of your options but The Hudsucker Proxy. A Coen Bros film but he was second unit director and it's the most underrated Coen Bros film imo. If that's not allowed then Darkman.

RLM can take solace that theyre influential enough to start bot-engagement campaigns.

Spider-Man 2 is still IMO the best "comic book" movie ever made. It captures the look and feel, even including stuff like splash panels and the like. My fave is still Army of Darkness. I'd rewatch most of them though, except for OZ probably.

I love every single one of his movies, and its an absolute crime against cinema that he stepped back so much after the Spider-Man 3 fallout and we only got 2 movies from him in the last 13 years.

I'm going to get slammed for this, but I don't care. I legitimately loved Multiverse of Madness. No, it's not bait. I am aware that the writing isn't very good, but then again, Endgame's writing isn't good either, yet most people love it. MoM is far from perfect, but I still really enjoy it for its creativity and villain. Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness follow it for me, they are great as well and obviously they are better movies in writing and all

I’ve watched the quick and the dead recently and really had fun with it.  I’ve watched all the most popular Sam Raimi and always have a great time. I can’t choose because I’m haven’t seen them all, but the evil dead and Spider-Man movies add well as drag me to hell, send help are all great flicks where you’ll have a good time
