Which storylines do you think were quite shocking in Grange Hill?

Posted by Rockin-Robin66

I am currently watching series 7 for the first time, two storylines have proved to be quite shocking so far. The teacher bullying the pupils in series 4, was quite graphic for a children's programme. Mr Baxter was excellent in some of his scenes. The death of the pupil Jeremy Irvine, quite shocked me. The character was quite unlikable, but he didn't deserve the ending that he got. The way the children and teachers coming to terms with what happened, was handled really well. Over to you.

This was a kids show that was on at 4.30 in the afternoon and one of the kids got addicted to Smack (not caffeine pills like in Saved by the Bell).

Zammo getting addicted to heroin and dying was pretty hard hitting. Then the boy dying of a brain tumour I think?

Never watched Grange Hill but that Jeremy Irvine storyline sounds pretty heavy for a kids show. The way British TV handled darker themes back then was wild compared to what we get now - they really didn't pull punches with the writing

I watched it as a kid when they repeated Grange Hill. Gave me a fear of swimming that lasted a long time. To quote David Mitchell: “The trouble is that some children are timorous and some children are reckless, and in order to save the lives of reckless children, warnings are calibrated for their safety, the result of which is that the timorous live in a state of perpetual terror. What I needed to be told is, 'you know what? Most days, you won't die. It's fine.' I wasn't ever going to tear across a three-lane motorway. The very existence of a three-lane motorway in the same post code as me made me not want to leave the house.”
