It’s when the fans want actors playing a couple on screen to be a couple in real life. It’s nothing new but forever creepy
4
NoTitleChampApr 18, 2026

Rooting for two characters to get together. With fictional characters it's normally harmless but some people try to do it for real people.
2
DoctorEnnApr 18, 2026
+2
Basically: you know the concept of 'shipping' fictional characters by imagining some kind of romantic relationship between them, even if the evidence is really tenuous?
Picture that, but with real people.
Yeah, it's about as crazy as it sounds.
2
ShamWowRobinsonApr 18, 2026

Shipping generally means thinking people should be in a romantic relationship. I dont what it means regarding that show. Sometimes its people thinking characters should be together and then other times its the actual actors should be together. If youve seen the American version of The Office its a pretty good example. But its generally obnoxious behavior.
1
PawspawsmeowApr 18, 2026
-14
I disagree a little. Big example is Derek and Meredith on Greys Anatomy. People have shipped the actors for years, but they’re both in healthy long marriages. It’s a testament to their chemistry
-14
NoTitleChampApr 18, 2026
+12
People want to ship characters more people to them, REAL people especially people already in other relationships is creppy.
Especially with the Outlander fandom going crazy saying that the stuido was forcing them into sham relationships/marriages to hide the relationship.

PawspawsmeowApr 18, 2026

Oh no you’re talking about this new wave of people who want realism steeped in every piece of media. Yeah, they don’t know the difference between reality and fiction. No that is creepy. I just mean when the actors are good and you notice it.

I don’t know if it’s the worst, but the most recent one that sucks is for The Pitt. The sub for that show is a total mess. Half the people want it to be greys anatomy with big melodramatic moments, but it’s not that kind of show. Lots of arguing and empty speculating about the cast (both their real lives and their characters lives).

First show I thought of when I read the title of this post. Absolutely unhinged fan base.
I just keep thinking about how the former ER showrunners and Noah Wylie wanted to make this cool, well written and acted medical drama that focuses strenuously on the competency of it all and hews closely to accuracy
and it’s a spiritual successor to ER, one of the most hailed medical drama shows of all times
And here in goddamn 2026 it’s got the viewership of people who act like literal children talking about characters in terms of being good guys and bad guys to root for and shipping and making fan art like it’s a manga or k-drama
And everyone is so parasocial about the whole thing it’s a literal war zone of discussion all the time, to the point people have concocted a show in their head out of whole cloth, that is certainly not the show that most other people are seeing on their TVs. And also these people are convinced that there are machinations going on behind the scenes to get certain actors fired because Noah Wylie hates women …or something?
I have no idea what the f*** is going on in these people’s heads.

They bullied a child with cancer who had met the show creator through Make-a-Wish because they wanted the kid to leak spoilers to them.
They drove a fanart creator to attempted suicide over drawing a character slightly "too thin" (iirc the character also only had one official art at the time, only showing the shoulders and up).
One German cosplayer who cosplayed Garnet (alien with dark skin) was bullied just as badly for "blackface", and at least one other cosplayer has been physically attacked for the same reason.
A storyboard artist had to delete all her social media and leave the show due to ongoing harassment from "fans" who got pissy about her posting stuff not related to the show to her art channels, and (as the final straw) because they thought she supported a ship they didn't like and attacked her over it.

Tons. Too many to name. There’s an obvious lack of overall literacy and media literacy that’s clearly affected people. I understand the need to want to see yourself represented on tv, but sometimes you’re just not a big s*** Viking vampire and that’s okay. People say they want new and creative tv, but then they shoehorn things into creative endeavors or actively try to cancel tv show that have been over for decades. Sometimes a show isn’t for you and that’s okay. We all need an escape. But this obsession with realism everywhere and forced inclusion inhibits creativity.

I can totally imagine that. Firstly because I bet a lot of them fail to remember the book it’s based on is deliberately meant to be ambiguous and the specifics of a lot of events are unknown. But also - and it’s not GoT specific - so many people fail to grasp how TV works. It’s never going to have as many characters or be as sociopathic and violent as the book. You just can’t get away with that.

In fairness, with the advent of streaming services and growing production values, the narrative of many shows has taken a dive as they simply don't have the screen time necessary to really build up a story and characters.
A point I am making because I suspect public discussion used to attract people who wanted to share speculation on where it was all going. And because there was more substance to work with, these discussions could be had plenty enough.
Now people spend their time on a show and want to socialize with other people about it and the well runs dry pretty quickly. Even if YOU personally enjoyed the experience, a discussion of "that was neat! That was fun!" isn't contributing to a meaningful public discussion.
And so of course these groups really just end up being the most high strung and offended people who could possibly exist over something so petty.

Used to be good, but yeah it's really just yelling back and forth about SFA now...
But back when Discovery and Picard aired, that sub was the only place on Listnook to have chill discussions about them. The dedicated subs were basically just hate subs, and the Picard sub mods would literally show up to attack and insult people who reported blatant rule violations from haters.
Meanwhile, discussing Star Trek in more general subs at that point in time had a 50%+ risk of Orville fans showing up to be toxic, and rant about how their show portrays Trek values better (while they themselves violated said values).

Hatedoms are f****** mad.
Like, I get the concept of a fandom at least; sure they almost always end up going a bit mad and taking things too seriously, but even if they lose sight of things at times at least at the core it's about shared enjoyment of something. It's about something you love or that you think makes your life a bit more positive.
I also get not liking something; there's things out there that don't gel with me, and I reserve the right to talk about that from time to time in circumstances where it's relevant.
But devoting my life to hating something to the point where I form a community centered around hating it just seems insanely toxic and negative.

Not sure if it's the worst, but I made a comment on an original series Star Trek episode and the hate I got by the Listnook fandom was insane.

I'm going to say The Vampire Diaries. They pretty much bullied Nina Dobrev out of attending fan conventions, the peak being her visit to Paris, back when she was still with Ian.
There were numerous instances of social media abuse as well.
I wasn't following it that closely, but I also know that OUAT fanbase wasn't exactly very welcoming (poor Michael Raymond-James..), and Supernatural fans were openly antagonistic to any woman portraying a female character on that show.
GoT, well, I'm happy its showrunners survived the finale.

I fear for Harry Potter. I hope the fandom will be okay… but I think it’s going to be pretty wild.

Yeah, I’m already very doubtful that fans will be chill about the child cast. Fans never are. Even if you ignore the Rowling stuff, there’s gonna be a lot of “fans” who’ll be shitting on it for not being the films, for changing anything from the books, for not changing things from the books … it’ll be a mess.

Considering the kid who is playing Percy Jackson in that show recently released a statement about how girls near him had received death threats, I doubt the internet is going to be kind to those child actors.

It's basically a given that it's going to be super wild.

Theres gonna be a sizeable minority of transphobes that watch to support Joanne, and a small minority of hate watchers that harass the child actors because the author sucks

Downturn in views (I know for sure it’ll be popular at first, but does feel like it might go the way of the Percy Jackson tv show where only the really h******* fans watch it now). I’m personally skipping the new show (moral reasons), but won’t fight people if they watch the new one

I had to check out of the last of us sublistnooks when season 2 was going on. Shit was a dumpster fire for a while. Same for the episode discussion threads in this sublistnook too, for that matter. I genuinely couldn’t understand what the f*** everyone’s problems with it were. There’s room for discussion of legitimate criticism but I saw almost none of that. Instead it was the same insane nitpicking and ragebaiting for like two months straight.

Season 2 is more enjoyable when you don’t look at the nitpicking people did (plus the way people talked about Bella Ramsey during that time grosses me out)

Yeah I liked it. The only legitimate issue I think season 2 really ever had was the pacing was a little wonky and could have benefited from another episode, maybe two.
But I had no real problems with the writing or performances. Everyone in that cast was putting on a clinic.

I agree, should’ve been at least one more episode to let it breathe. I am happy that they plan to do more episodes for season 3.

2
MistakeMaker1234Apr 18, 2026
I think all you have to do is compare it to season one and it’s obvious that the quality isn’t as good. You could live on an island by yourself with no connection to the outside world and say objectively that S2 is not as good. The nitpicking community has nothing to do with that.

Any show that generates a level of devotion where when you tell a fan that you aren't in to it they respond with something along the lines of "I can't believe you don't like xxx,.what is wrong with you?" And then follow it up with repeated attempts to try and make you like the show the way they do.
Basically when people followm TV shows in a manner that's basically the same as hard core religious people follow their chosen religion.

SVU. I’m just going to say it. Fans bullied a show runner who, admittedly had a “hard on” for torturing Olivia with various events, but afterwards at least there was variety in episodes and beforehand the episodes were the same format as seasons 1-12. The show runner after, pandered to fans of Benson & Stabler knowing full well the executives would never let it happen, as well as ‘dumbing down the storylines’.
They criticize Olivia to no end, and they rehash and pick apart every decision that’s made after THEY screamed for it to be fixed.
Then Stabler had a spinoff which was amazing, with a few bumps in the road bts, but I was thinking positive until they decided to put it on Peacock.
Grittier material, yes but there was no reason on earth for it to be cancelled.
Now everyone is screaming for closure and to put him back on a show that didn’t know his worth.
I give up.🤷🏼♀️

Tie between Steven Universe and Voltron Legendary Defender, the latter of which tried to extort the animation studio into making a gay pairing canon. No wonder the rumor is everyone involved with the Voltron movie hates that show.

The Supernatural fandom was terrible back in the day if you didn't want Sam/Dean, or later, Dean/Castiel to get together in the show.
I distanced myself from the fandom because they only watched the show through the lens of shipping.
Their collective crash-out at the end of the series was hilarious.

I really enjoyed The Wire but some of the fans here get way too aggressive when someone claims that another show is their favorite or "the best show ever". People finding other shows enjoyable is not a personal attack and is perfectly okay.
Breaking Bad has a similar problem but I think it being a little more mainstream helps drown out some of the noise from the more unstable fans.
