For the very first time in cinema and in pop culture history, we have seen multiple video games get adapted into successful movies, streaming series', and television shows, after decades of a seemingly endless run of failures at the box office.
Starting about a decade ago and picking up major steam at the beginning of the 2020s, there have been more successful video game adaptations than in the last 40 years combined.
Hitman: Agent 47 (2015), Warcraft (2016), The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Assassin's Creed (2016), Tomb Raider (2018), Rampage (2018), The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), The Sonic The Hedgehog Trilogy (2020, 2022, 2024), Mortal Kombat (2021),
Uncharted (2022), Five Nights At Freddy's (2023), The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023), A Minecraft Movie (2025), Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (2025), Iron Lung (2026) were all box office hits.
When it comes to streaming services/television, video game adaptations have slowly begun to dominate the format, in the past decade. The Last of Us quickly became one of the most popular shows in the history of HBO, and with shows like Fallout, Twisted Metal, Arcane, The Witcher, Halo, Castlevania, Knuckles (Sonic spin-off), Cyberpunk: Edgerunners all becoming very popular shows in their own right.
By the end of 2026, we will also be getting The Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie (hitting theaters in April), Mortal Kombat 2 (Coming out in theaters on May 8, after being pushed back from October 2025), and Street Fighter (hitting theaters October 16, 2026)
There are a TON of video game adaptations in development all across Hollywood, right now. Instead of posting a list of the movies and TV shows in development (because who knows when/if what will ultimately get made and what will be stuck in development hell for the foreseeable future) -- What video games do YOU want to see get made into a movie or television show? And what format best serves your pick(s)? Live action? Animated? Movie? Streaming series?
With today's news that Glen Powell will be voicing Fox McCloud in the upcoming Super Mario Bros: Galaxy Movie, I would love to see an animated Star Fox movie in theaters.
I don't think you could ask for a more visually stimulating video game to be adapted into an animated feature than Star Fox. The original Star Fox game lifted many elements from Star Wars & Top Gun, and in the years since the game has been out, there are other movie franchises that lend themselves greatly to Star Fox, such as The Guardians of The Galaxy.
I think that if a studio decided to make a live action Star Fox, there are a lot of similarities between Rocket Raccoon and Star McCloud. While there are a lot of unique characters in the Star Fox IP, if they're done via live action, then those are going to be fully rendered CGI characters, created by either ILM or Weta Digital for the best result.
If the characters are adapted into animation, which is the most likely and easiest means of transferring the characters in the IP from the video game, then the easiest way to adapt these characters will be in the character design style that they ultimately decide on for Star Fox for the upcoming Mario Bros Galaxy movie.
I look forward to whatever they ultimately choose! And I can't wait to see Star Fox fly off the screens in your households and into the silver screen in a movie theater, near you!!!!
FINAL FIGHT and/or STREETS OF RAGE: I am a **HUGE** fan of both games. I recently learned that there is a Streets of Rage screenplay, written by John Wick scribe, Derek Kolstad, that is completed, and under lock & key in the development vaults at Lionsgate. He recently spoke on the project, and if there has been any movement, to which he said that he had submitted his final draft, and that any & everything going forward was up to Lionsgate. He also spoke about how proud he was of the film, how he thought it was the greatest work of his career, & that he can only hope & Pray that this film eventually gets made, and that we eventually get to see the film.
FINAL FIGHT, while extremely similar in video game style & structure to Streets of Rage, is the project that I would personally prefer to be made into a live action film. A few years ago, there was a fan film based on Final Fight that made its way to YouTube, and starred early UFC & Pride Fighting icon, Don Frye, in the role of Mayor Mike Haggar. Ultimately, by the time a movie about this IP sees the light of day (if ever), Frye would likely be much too old to portray Haggar. With that said, the tone of the fan film delivered the kind of goofy ass movie that fans would love to see, which is very reminiscent of the current Street Fighter movie that's in post production. Hopefully one day soon, we get to see Cody, Haggar, and Guy take on the Mad Gear Gang, who have kidnapped Cody's GF, Jessica, and have Metro City under occupation. If Capcom can give us Street Fighter, they can damn sure give us a Final Fight adaptation!
METAL GEAR SOLID: I know that, essentially, Metal Gear is Kojima's very own unauthorized "reverse adaptation" as he took one of his favorite movies of all-time and turned it into his original video game franchise. Since he couldn't get the licensing rights to the character of Snake Plissken, or the rights to the film franchise for Escape from N.Y. or Escape from LA, Kojima seemingly created Metal Gear, and to us video game fans, for decades, it was BEYOND solid! Unfortunately, an absolute tragedy occurred that was felt in the hearts of gamers all across the planet when Konami pulled a move seemingly straight out of the Idiocracy playbook, and not only fired Kojima, but has continued to churn out sequel after sequel after sequel to the Metal Gear gaming series WITHOUT the participation and the inclusion of its creator. Without Kojima running the show at Metal Gear, ughhh..to quote "Iron" Mike Tyson, "How dare they challenge me with their somewhat primitive skills? They're just as good as dead." And I don't think there's ever been a more accurate statement regarding a video game IP. With that said, I would love to see what a Kojima-led Metal Gear film adaptation looked like. And while Kojima has kept busy delivering new classics like Death Stranding, with other new projects coming down the pipeline,.although I don't see him returning to Metal Gear in any capacity, with or without Konami's involvement in a potential Metal Gear film adaptation.
DUKE NUKEM: I recently saw a fan at a comic con during a Q&A with John Cena ask him if he would ever be interested in portraying Duke Nukem? Cena gave the most professional answer you possibly could, and while he didn't politely decline the possibility of appearing as Duke, Cena didn't exactly seem like it was his dream role, either. He also pitched the fan on the potential of Cody Rhodes appearing as Duke, which isn't a bad idea, when I think about it!
What are some video games that YOU want to see come to the silver screen in live action or in animated form? Drop a comment below and let me know YOUR thoughts!
The Control, Alan Wake, Quantum Break games. Especially Control.

only if Remedy is involved and it gets done TLoU season 1 style. I shudder at the idea of some of the adaptions OP listed as "successful."
Most of them sucked from a gaming fan point of view and also from a movie lover point of view. Just because gaming adaptions are no longer Uwe Boll bad doesn't mean the new stuff is suddenly great.

Now we're talking. Shaq Fu would make a PERFECT live action, 8 episode first season on Peacock, to gauge fan interest and to see if it gains an audience, before they commit to anything past that.
Just go all in on the ridiculousness of the original Shaq Fu video game, along the lines of the Twisted Metal series, and you've got yourself a f****** Saturn Award Winning Sci Fi Kung Fu epic.
Shaq Fu had great world building, back in the day. Unfortunately, it had THE worst and most frustrating gameplay of any fighting game I've ever played not named Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi.
In my mind, I'm still trying to high kick with Shaq and missing by a mile, to this day. Good times!

Artie Ziff is such a loser and it is because of his personality more than anything else... Reign in some of his douchy personality and he would have better chances with the ladies. Then again his character exists to be specifically a foil to Homer, so he would always be a douchy loser.

I always felt like Metroid could use a largely silent animated movie directed by Genndy Tardakovsky from Samurai Jack and Primal. He's great at using visual storytelling with minimal dialogue, which suits Metroid's isolated atmosphere.

Star Fox would be a weird one to go after next considering there hasn't been a good game in the franchise for the past 2 decades. Just not a lot of brand equity there to carry a solo movie.

I have wanted a LoZ movie for the past three decades but if I am being perfectly honest, the way some adaptations go these days it feels like without good writers who are familiar with all of the lore it could very well end up sucking. A Sly Cooper film, except actually done by Sony Animation with a budget instead of just being handed off to some c**** studio like Rachet and Clank was. (Although given The Bad Guys already stole the "furry heist film" spotlight at the moment, it's probably not happening anytime soon)
I can also see Medievil working wonder for an animated adaptation as well. Have it be a comedic yet grim adventure with stop motion animation in the style of A Nightmare Before Christmas or Paranorman.

A trilogy about what?
I could see a series about the lead up to the Skyrim civil war.
Or the early days of the Tribunal before they attained “godhood”
Or maybe the nitty gritty of the oblivion crisis where we see the true desolation and destruction that a demonic invasion would bring. Oblivion actually could be a movie or series because the player character isn’t actually the chosen one.
1
nymrod_Mar 28, 2026

Should be the tone of the last D&D movie — the kind of movie where a whole town gets attacks the protagonist for accidentally stealing something, and where the hero just kind of stumbles upon a new adventure while walking from point A to B and quickly gets made leader of the faction they help. That’s the experience of playing an Elder Scrolls game, which is the kind of thing video game movies should seek to put on screen more than obtuse and unoriginal lore.
1
Ren_KaosMar 28, 2026
+1
Yeah it’s the experience of playing the game, but that’s all more a product of the limitations of the medium. The lore isn’t thaaaaaat goofy. Sure it’s got plenty of quirkiness, but it’s not really like fallout in its world’s silliness.

It is pretty baffling that they haven't made any more live-action Pokemon movies since, like why? They'd obviously make a lot of money and promote the brand even more. Even if they don't want to make an adaptation of the main games where you fight the gym leaders, an evil team, and the champion, there's plenty of other spin-off games like Pokemon Ranger, Mystery Dungeon, Pokopia, etc. or some original idea like Pokemon Concierge.

World of Warcraft, as a fun-centric adventure between two groups of characters engaged in the same raid with their own challenges and inter-group conflict may be fun to watch.
The Warcraft movie, while I liked it, focused more on the first aspect of the Warcraft mythos, my suggestion is to push beyond the lore for now and focus on the aspect of groups from diverse backgrounds and personality engaging in a group goal like how most RPG characters come together for an adventure.

A Horizon: Zero Dawn movie is supposed to be in development, I think that it could actually work, but like many videogame adaptations they could also easily screw it up. At least I hope the visuals of the machine creatures are good. I also hear that a Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 movie might be in development, once again I hope they don't f*** up the story and characters, and that they at least nail the visuals.
I would also be interested in adaptations (movie or TV) of the Elder Scrolls, Metal Gear Solid, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Alan Wake, and Ghost of Tsushima. You forgot about everything Halo!! Tv series, multiple movies and short films. Love all of them personally. I’d really like to see the old Xbox games TimeSplitters (original and sequel) made into 2 short films. Would be a dope watch

I want an over the top, 80s style action extravaganza fueled with more machismo, explosions, and cocaine than Don Simpson, Jerry Bruckheimer, and Michael Bay could ever dream of. I'm talking a CONTRA adaptation based off a modern interpretation of the original cover of the game. The NES cover had obvious rip offs of Stallone and Arnold on there. And since we can't have them in action hero roles in 2026, I would cast them in cameo roles similar to how certain characters would show up in The Expendables. Maybe make Stallone the head of the CIA and make Arnold the President or something like that.
And, of course, my CONTRA would definitely have a Xenomorph and facehuggers just like the original game did (but they would be re-designs, not outright stated that it's IP from Alien) We'd definitely have our heroes fight off an alien hive at some point.
With that said, I need a dynamic duo in this modern era that will be a box office draw. I keep circling back to two guys. An Avenger. And a member of The Justice League. A God of Thunder and A Son of Krypton. Thor and Superman. Chris Hemsworth and Henry Cavill would be my leads in CONTRA. And I would make sure that they were on every steroid & HGH known to man. I would want them to be as ripped as they could possibly be!!!
And I would also need some over the top, cocaine fueled villains. I need a main villain and a goon henchman. I am thinking either Denzel Washington or Giancarlo Esposito for my main baddie. I need gravitas and theatricality with my villain. I wouldn't want to cast both of them. But I would definitely pick 1 of the 2. And then I would need a heavy, a goon. Someone that can bring the brawn to match the brains of Washington/Giancarlo. I keep circling back to Tom Hardy, jacked to the absolute gills like he was circa Bronson/The Dark Knight Rises. I think Tom Hardy is the perfect actor to play a goon villain with a physical prowess. He is swole as f*** like he was during his Bronson days and his Dark Knight Rises days. He's got a early 2000s MMA style mohawk, with a huge scar over his right eye, and his right eye itself looks "milky" because his eye was damaged, but somehow, he has top notch depth perception and is a sharpshooter with a rifle. That's the gag. Tom Hardy also has a long goatee similar to 1999 Undertaker and he talks like Ninja from Die Antwoord (my Tom Hardy is a South African mercenary)
The rough plot for my CONTRA movie is: The movie opens on President Arnold giving a historic speech in Washington, DC at his inauguration for his 2nd term as President, when all of the sudden, explosions go off all over the crowd, and snipers take out the remaining Secret Service members, leaving President Arnold a sitting duck, which is when Denzel/and or Giancarlo comes down to the podium and abducts the President, and before making off with President Arnold, he makes some kind of cheesy ass challenge to CIA Director Stallone, and demands a huge ransom if they want President Arnold returned safely.
Cut to a scene in the Jungle where Hemsworth & Cavill are in a firefight with the alien xenomorph thing. We get another top notch action sequence here, before they kill the Xenomorph. Just as they both sit down and fire up their victory cigars and take a few puffs, their comms go off and a hologram of CIA Director Stallone pops up, informing them that President Arnold has been kidnapped by Denzel and/or Giancarlo and their presence is needed in Venezuela (where the President is being held by the terrorist organization)
And that's when the title card CONTRA comes flying across the screen, and the score of the movie swells, and the camera pans down on henchman goon Tom Hardy, who is beating the living f*** out of some local Venezuelans that he and Denzel and/or Giancarlo strong armed for their cocaine distribution center, because they needed drugs and they needed a place to hide President Arnold.
And that's as far as I've gotten with my CONTRA pitch.
I hope you enjoyed the utter ridiculousness of it all.
I know it's probably bat shit stupid, but that's kinda the point. I honestly think it's a better outline, so far, than anything that Max Landis has written since Chronicle.
