Who are the no hit wonders?

Posted by pinpoint321

Just to clarify obviously there are many many bands that have never had a hit. But I’m interested in the bands who are considered successful or well known without having ever troubled the singles chart. For sake of clarity let’s say anything inside the Top 40 is the cut off for a hit. Let’s also restrict this to UK and US charts.

Tom Waits in his hall of fame speech said “they say I don’t have any hits…and they say it like it’s a bad thing”

SEND_ME_FEAT_PICS Mar 31, 2026 +320
Tom Waits was my first thought. I struggle to think of someone anywhere near as influential as him that has had less commercial success.

FlavorD Apr 1, 2026 +165
The Ramones had one gold studio album, and reached only 66 on the pop singles chart.
165
SEND_ME_FEAT_PICS Apr 1, 2026 +101
Guess who the Ramones covered Edit: To be fair, Waits also covered the Ramones
101
FlavorD Apr 1, 2026 +23
Maybe they covered Waits. The single that went number 66 was written by Dee Dee Ramone, "Rockaway Beach."
23
emotionalfescue Apr 1, 2026 +26
The Ramones are a good answer to OP's question b/c they released a bunch of singles. And their fans (including me) would say that many of them deserved AM radio airplay.

FandomMenace Apr 1, 2026 +70
He just casually ran a clinic on how to write amazing songs for half a century (so far) instead. He also did some acting (mystery men comes to mind).
70
gristc Apr 1, 2026 +30
He has a part in Seven Psychopaths too. Very good at giving of a creepy vibe.
30
FandomMenace Apr 1, 2026 +21
He needs his own movie. Maybe we can finally find out what he's building in there
21
utterlybasil Apr 1, 2026 +36
He had an entire segment of the Coens’ *The Ballad of Buster Scruggs* to himself. He was also great in Francis Ford Coppola’s *Bram Stoker’s Dracula*.

I like how he combines like medicine and music. Like he’ll just stop and save people’s lives on the freeway. It’s crazy.

Senators_1992 Apr 1, 2026 +51
Tom Waits didn’t have any hits as a solo artist, but Rod Stewart’s cover of “Downtown Train” hit No.3.
51
the_rev_28 Apr 1, 2026 +22
The Eagles cover of “Ol’ 55” was decently popular too, but it wasn’t released as a single
22
rividz Apr 1, 2026 +28
Jersey Girl is a lot of people's favorite Bruce Springsteen song.
28
Senators_1992 Apr 1, 2026 +7
Sarah McLachlan also had a cover that got a bit of airplay here in Canada, but it wasn’t really a hit.
7
the_ballmer_peak Apr 1, 2026 +36
I f****** love Tom Waits. That is all.

My wife and I joke that she and cannibal corpse (another band with no hits but a long successful career) are tied for third biggest acts to come out of Buffalo. We separately went to a show by each a night or two apart at the same venue a few years back. Rick James and the goo goo dolls are 1 and 2.
56
bolivar-shagnasty Mar 31, 2026 +472
GWAR Bob Marley never had a top 40 song in the US. Tame Impala hasn't broken the top 100 I don't think. I don't think Velvet Underground had any major top 40 hits in the US either.
472
WestSider55 Apr 1, 2026 +187
Tame Impala did finally break the Billboard Hot 100 just this year with the “Dracula” remix featuring Jennie.
187
Equux Apr 1, 2026 +56
That's actually crazy to me. I feel like he's one of those artists who a LOT of people know and Currents was kind of a modern classic in a lot of ways. And I'm not even the biggest fan of the guy, but I would've put money saying he has multiple top 100 hits
56
italicizedmeatball Apr 1, 2026 +41
Okay, I had to look this up, because that is crazy to me. Apparently Currents as an album reached number 4 in the US, but the songs themselves did not chart as singles. Wild.
41
MCI21 Apr 1, 2026 +21
Thats insane. I feel like "The less i know the better" could have easily been a number 1 single if tik tok caught wind of it nowadays
21
logicaldrinker Apr 1, 2026 +24
That's crazy. I feel like I heard The less I know the better on radio all the time when it dropped. Also Feels like I only go backwards earlier.
24

Damn, Roots, Rock, Reggae is the closest Bob Marley got in the US, got to number 51 in the charts. He got 18 UK Top 40 hits though. Tame Impala only recently (2025) hit the main top 40 in the UK and the US. Did was with the song Dracula, got to 12 in the UK and 24 in the US.
24
Thisguynotthatguy1 Mar 31, 2026 +241
The Replacements
241
Clewin Mar 31, 2026 +73
Their highest charting on Billboard was #51 with I'll Be You, but they're considered one of the most influential alternative bands. That song did go to #1 on Modern Rock. Of the big 3 that got their start at Jay's Longhorn Bar, two were highly influential and only one had mainstream success. Those are Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, and Soul Asylum.
73
Thisguynotthatguy1 Mar 31, 2026 +21
Soul Asylum was my second concert ever. Saw them at the Blue Note in Columbia, MO in April, 1993. Openers were Vic Chesnutt and Goo Goo Dolls (before they had any hits). What a show. Dave Pirner came out and stood right behind me to watch some of the Goo Goo Dolls set.
21
SaulTNNutz Mar 31, 2026 +489
Mastodon is huge. I'm not sure they've had a "smash hit" single Nick Cave really only had one somewhat-successful single and that was mainly due to it being a duet with another artist. Huge fanbase and following though
489
NeilPatrickWarburton Mar 31, 2026 +122
Yes! Had a conversation with someone recently who was like “Who?” when I said I was going to see Nick Cave. “Oh you know that song from the slow dance in Harry Potter? No…? or err Peaky Blinders…? No… errr Kylie Minogue? Yes, seriously the O2 Arena.”
122
califachica Apr 1, 2026 +13
Nick Cave in “Wings of Desire” is why I fell for Nick Cave.
13
Bobabackribs Mar 31, 2026 +107
Red Right Hand has had some long legs between being featured in Dumb and Dumber, the original Scream trilogy and Peaky Blinders. It even gets played by organists at NHL games.
107
Snoo_33033 Apr 1, 2026 +23
Red Right Hand actually is in every Scream film. So...I dunno what those royalties are worth, but it's gotta be something.
23
TJHollingsworth Apr 1, 2026 +5
I thought it was missing from 4.
5
RobertNeyland Apr 1, 2026 +44
I would say that Blood and Thunder hits a pretty high mark for metal fans, but as far as "commercial" success, Mastodon had several singles chart, including number 1 on the U.S. Sales chart. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_discography
44
ryaaan89 Apr 1, 2026 +16
I originally know Blood and Thunder from the old rage comic meme. Edit: https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/053/986/white-whale-holy-grail.png
16
MayonaiseBaron Apr 1, 2026 +17
The Blood and Thunder music video has almost nine million views on YouTube. It didn't chart in the top 40 but High Road was a #1 single and White Walker was #4. I used to do terrestrial college radio and we had very strict requirements that NOTHING we played could be from a band that had charted in the top 40 or been certified RIAA gold (or higher) and my best friend and co-host got a strike for spinning Steambreather when Emperor of Sand dropped.
17
Mountain-Sea2898 Mar 31, 2026 +20
Nick cave has had several singles in the top 40. The one with Kylie was highest at 11 (uk). Still under appreciated but he has been (somewhat) successful with his singles
20
timtamchewycaramel Apr 1, 2026 +14
Show yourself. I feel like that must have charted.

Mazzy Star. "Fade Into You" peaked at #44 in the US and #48 in the UK. Just barely met your criteria. :)
665
Badgereatingyourface Mar 31, 2026 +237
Damn. Fade into You has a billion plus streams on Spotify and they play that song on 90s radio a lot, thought it would have charted a little higher.

They are literally a one hit wonder
25
AmazingRefrigerator4 Apr 1, 2026 +8
Not by OPs criteria. They are defining a "hit" as a Top 40 hit. "Fade into you" never cracked the top 40.

smitty046 Mar 31, 2026 +421
Ween. Push the lil daises charted at 21 for rock specifically, but didnt chart in the top 40 overall.

64

Massive Attack did get 10 UK top 40 hits: https://www.officialcharts.com/artist/28023/massive-attack/ But non in the US. And Fade from Yo La Tengo got to number 26 in the US: https://www.billboard.com/artist/yo-la-tengo/chart-history/tlp/ But the others are correct indeed.
59
wolf_van_track Mar 31, 2026 +31
I'm surprised YLT hit that high that far into their career. Think it was the Onion back in the day that ran the line; fire breaks out in a Yo La Tengo concert. Hundreds of record store clerks injured.

What about "Vaseline"? That song had a lot of radio play in the 90s.

67
soggybutter Apr 1, 2026 +7
I am not a huge fan of the dead specifically. I dont mean that as some like wook comparing myself to h******* fans, i mean i couldnt name a single song that wouldnt be on a greatest hits album. I work in the live music industry so my knowledge base is a little deeper than my personal interest dictates, but I'm not that into jam bands generally. They were SO influential. Musically for sure. But also just like physically being important early key figures in the early counter culture revolution.  Everything that exists in counter and alternative culture today would look unrecognizable without the 60s being shaped the way they were. And the 60s would have looked fundamentally different without groups like the Dead and the Merry Pranksters doing things like the traveling Acid Tests. It's hard to imagine that even modern music festivals would exist, or look similar..The key factors would have still been there, but it likely would have remained a lot more niche, and hand waved away as some San Fran nonsense. Even just the fact that they used their pull and cache and fame to continue to cultivate massive events that broke into the main stream knowledge. They were SOOOO influential on the scene and culture as a whole before you even touch on the music
7
decdash Apr 1, 2026 +10
Had to scroll way too far down to see this. I feel like no one mentions it because of the importance of the live jam to the band's sound, but it's still wild to think about, even if only to illustrate how different of an experience the Grateful Dead was. One of the biggest touring bands of all time, massively dedicated fanbase spanning almost 70 years now, 30 years of releases. Only one top 10 hit, over 20 years into their career. Wild

Big Star, maybe?
17
BeatleJooz Apr 1, 2026 +17
I know it doesn’t count because he had a few top 40 songs, nothing over 18th place, but Jimmy Buffett is like the poster child for “no hit wonders”. Never had a number 1 song, never had a number 1 album, had a 50 year career. Sold over 20 million records and was a billionaire
17
Powerserg95 Apr 1, 2026 +15
The Band probably. Very influential but they werent a chart topping band
15
the_answer_is_RUSH Mar 31, 2026 +115
The answer is Rush. They never had a top 40 hit. Tom Sawyer peaked at 44.
115
Salty-Usual-4307 Mar 31, 2026 +24
Although I agree in spirit, technically speaking New World Man peaked at #21.

And yet, “Take Off” is the highest charting single to feature a band member.

They’re classic rock radio staples though. Outside of this specific context we’d both be offended if someone said Rush don’t have any hits. Not gonna check but I bet they charted on rock radio a lot.

The Ramones, The Stooges, Pixies, Joy Division, Pavement, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine.
122
LynnButterfly Mar 31, 2026 +63
Well in the UK Pixies has 3 top 40 hits, "Debaser being the highest at 23. Love Will Tear Us Apart got to 13 in the UK for Joy Division and in 1988 Atmosphere got to number 34. The Ramones got 4 UK Top 40 hits, "Baby, I Love You" got to number 8 spot. Pavement two, Shady Lane (40) and Carrot Rope (27). And My Bloody Valentine got one, To Here Knows When got number 27. The Stooges indeed none, same for Slowdive,

Guess I should have checked the UK as well as the billboard. Kind of surprised how many of the American groups did better in the UK. Highest Pavement hit on the US billboard was 70. Also, didn't notice that when I google X group and billboard, for some reason the billboard now only shows the albums and not the singles, so yeah; my research was c***. Sorry.

Surely Blitzkreig Bop for the Ramones and Where Is My Mind for the Pixies? Edit: apparently Where Is My Mind never did particularly well in the US - it went triple platinum in my country lol

The Ramones never had a traditional hit in the sense that they released a song and it was at or near the top of the charts for some time.  Everybody knows Blitzkrieg Pop though.  I’d say Blitzkrieg Pop is better known than many songs that hit #1 on the charts.

They Might Be Giants, The Sundays and King Crimson never had a top 40 hit in the US (although the Sundays had two top 40 hits in the UK) Although Aimee Mann had some hits with Til Tuesday, she never had a top 40 hit as a solo artist. Although he had a minor hit with the band GTR, Steve Hackett from Genesis has never had a top 40 hit in either US or UK, neither has Tony Banks. Ten Thousand Maniacs have had only two top 40 hits and both were covers not original songs!

The Shins and Broken Bells, both James Mercer's bands. Some epic tunes between the two.

Sonic Youth? They were very successful but I dont think they ever had anything really approaching a hit.

They got 3 songs in the UK Top 40, 100% (28), Sugar Kane (26) and Bull in the Heather (24). Not huge hits, but still...

If we're talking general mainstream charts I'd say Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service and Coheed & Cambria. They've had some success in alternative/indie charts but no real mainstream success. Death Cab maybe moreso because they have a couple songs that were used in commercials and movies that will be recognizable.

If we’re going strictly by Billboard Top 40, and not Modern Rock charts or MTV rotation, then a lot of 90’s bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Limp Bizkit, The Offspring and Rage Against The Machine don’t actually make the cut as far as the US goes (Rage memorably went to No.1 in the UK with Killing In The Name, but I’m not sure about the others).

SupervillainMustache Mar 31, 2026 +18
Limp Bizkit had a number 1 in the UK with Rollin' Offspring had a number 2 hit with Pretty Fly RATM also had another top 10 with Bulls on Parade in the mid 90s.

Damn, Bad Religion did come close with 21st Century (Digital Boy), got to number 41 in the UK. It was a Top 40 hit in Sweden. Punk Rock Song there was also, and in Germany and Finland. And Hallelujah did charted in 2007 in the UK, just on downloads it got to number 36. In 1984 that song was number one in France, back in 1967 Suzanne got to number 3 there. He has few more in other countries, but in the US zero and in the UK only that one.

Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon from Urge Overkill got to number 37 in the UK. In the US they missed the Top 40 indeed, got to number 59 with that song. Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band indeed has none in both countries.

**The Ramones**! This band is a foundational voice for punk, on tshirts everywhere, Blitzkrieg Bop is played religiously often at sports events, and they’re often considered a key NY music icon. But they only ever hit #66 on US Billboard charts with *Rockaway Beach* …
