Jack Horner the paleontologist. He uncovered some stellar finds in the 70s, wrote some important papers on dinosaur behavior and life cycles, and was one of the scientific consultants for the Jurassic Park series. A massive star for any paleontology kid of the 90s-00s. But he had some whackass ideas ranging from Triceratops not being a valid genus to T-rex being an obligate scavenger to pushing his Build A Dinosaur project, which had the intended goal of making Jurassic Park real with genetically defective chickens. And he'd push these ideas to the public directly rather than submit actual papers for peer review, which is just plain academic dishonesty. And his image has completely crumbled over the past few years as it came out what a terrible human being he is. Apparently his groundbreaking research on Maiasaura involved him "borrowing" other people's finds and then not giving them back, in 2012 he married one of the students at the college he worked at while she was 19 and he was 65 (they divorced a few years after), and he was recently listed in the Epstein files where he sent a personal e-mail to Epstein thanking him for "a lovely weekend with the girls." He apparently had a lot of friends in high places making generous donations for the colleges he worked at, which is a can of worms in itself. But yeah. Awful scientist, awful human, and a massive stain in the history of the community.

I went to Montana State during the time he married that student. The student he married wasn’t the only student he was involved with. We all knew he was a piece of shit professionally and personally, a lot of us were extremely unhappy he was still employed by the university. Pretty sure that was during the time he had obtained a grant to find another full t-Rex, and was still looking. I honestly don’t think he ever even ended up finding another one, it was a big thing around here, considering the financials and whatnot.

Hello fellow MSU attendee! I left in 2011 right before he married the student and also worked over in the Museum as well alongside my then wife. It was definitely whack and I wasn't surprised when everything fell through. Dude was something to meet in person, not good something, but definitely something.

Did not expect to come here and witness some major paleontology drama.

No one's got more bones to pick than a paleontologist!

koneko713 Mar 30, 2026 +150
Yeah. When I was an undergrad I was warned that if he liked you (as a woman) then you could get basically any position you wanted after graduation. But that he would enforce “mandatory naked days” on his field schools, pressure (especially female) students to drink excessively and to have sex with other students on the dig, and make promises in exchange for “favors”. And this was well enough known that expressing interest in paleontology at a completely different university got me warned about it. Sucks to find out someone who contributed a lot to the field is an absolute dungweasel.

I never went into paleontology in college, but I would have been heartbroken to find all this out while actively making it my career path. Just highly disappointing all around.

I took a class in college about Dinosaurs, the professor know Jack Horner and didn't have the greatest opinion of him
128
2Scarhand Mar 30, 2026 +100
Nobody does, apparently. But before the Files dropped, everyone was keeping their opinions to themselves because he made the college a lot of money. A heads up would have been nice.

It's my comfort show so it's sad to say, but most of the main cast from That '70s Show.

Topher was painted as an arrogant d*****. Turns out he’s the least problematic one.
2646
Cyke101 Mar 29, 2026 +972
Probably also the most skilled one, too. He was making studio level fan edits, all as a hobby, like the Star Wars prequels and the Hobbit movies.

His Star Wars prequels are fantastic.

The way they smeared Topher Grace makes me mad
474
essdeecee Mar 29, 2026 +619
I wasn't aware how Topher Grace would get c*** about not hanging out with them afterwards until all of the allegations came out but I totally see why
619
Parisian_Nightsuit Mar 29, 2026 +589
I was in late middle school/early high school when That 70’s Show was released and its first peak seasons. There was definitely that hearsay that Topher Grace “thought he was better than his costars” or was overall stuck up because he wasn’t hanging out with the rest of the younger cast. Seeing pictures of the rest of them doing stuff at scientology church, multiple events… he was right to nope out of all that c***.
589
dealingwithhookers Mar 29, 2026 +291
that's because his character was lowkey the main character of the show so it felt like the fame was getting in HIS head, but it definitely is a trip to think back then that he was just a stuck up d***** while the other guys were fun friends, only to find out that he was flying straight while the other guys were a bunch of weird pedophiles what a trippppppppppppppp
291

I’ll even go so far as to say Hyde and Jackie were my favorite couple on the show. It’s a hard watch now.

Hyde was hands down my favorite character, and I had a huge crush on Danny Masterson as a teen. Absolutely horrifying to think about now.

She was the main reason my mother distrusted everything I did or said as a preteen/teenager. She had her convinced I was doing h******* drugs and going to alcohol-fueled sex parties. Ignoring the fact that I had NEVER even been INVITED to a party to begin with. The minute my mom stopped watching Oprah, I was treated like a person. It has never been more clear to me that Oprah hates children. Not doesn’t-want-them, HATES them.

Ive had horrid sinuses my entire life. Just a constant runny nose. My mom was searching my bag from school at 14-15 and knew for sure I was addicted to cocaine. I was fat, didn't have a job, and kept explaining that if I did coke, my sinuses would be dry. "HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT, COKE HEAD..."

Not as widely known but when the OWN (Oprah Winfrey network) launched, it produced non union shows despite her being a member of SAG/AFTRA. Aside from that, the network talent consisted mainly of people of color however, the non union wages they were paid were dismal and didn't elevate the community at all. The network was wildly successful at the time and could've done better but didn't care to whatsoever

I'm not sure that there's a larger gap between how somebody presents themselves vs how they move irl. Oprah has platformed all manner of predators and grifters over the years. Not to mention how much disinformation and pseudoscience she has spewed into the world. Just a grubby woman pretending to be a wholesome beacon of humanity. Gross shit imo.

Bill Cosby was once a very wholesome character, until the truth came out.

Bill Cosby is a stunning level of hypocrite. He was always lecturing others on how to live their lives more morally.

Back in high school, I loved my French teacher. She was so kind to me and encouraged me at every opportunity and I always did my very best in her class. She was part of the reason I wanted to become a French teacher. Cut to when I was in college and working part-time at McDonald's: one night this lady pulled up to the drive-thru speaker and was crazy rude. Just unnecessarily nasty! She pulled around and it was...my French teacher from high school. Lost all respect for her at that moment, and gave up on my French teacher aspirations (not totally because of her).
4408
pineapple2princess Mar 29, 2026 +1496
If it makes you feel better, I found out that my French teacher (who I loved) was a pedophile years later. He had been a priest who molested little boys, so the Catholic Church naturally sent him to my all girls school 🙄 this was in 2009 mind you.

Anishinaapunk Mar 29, 2026 +505
The punk band Anti-Flag. They were really good, did a great show, and had a great political message. Then we found out that the singer is allegedly a serial rapist. Whether the rest of the band members knew or not is still debated. They disbanded the DAY the allegations came to light, and have vanished from the internet.

Disbanding immediately is a level of courtesy most of the people listed in this thread haven't reached, so... points for the bare minimum?

Niel Gaiman. I enjoyed his work but he is dead to me now. It was the way he spoke about the allegations of sexual violence that turned my stomach.

this one's mine. this one really broke me. i'm not exaggerating when i say sandman meaningfully changed the course of my life. i met him once in my early twenties, got a very long hug from the guy, floated on air for years about it. reading about what he's done turned that memory, which was once something very bracing, into something pretty unsettling.
1354
InsaneComicBooker Mar 29, 2026 +363
Sandman, Transmetropolitan and Runaways were 3 comics that I geniuelyl believe saved me at lowest point of my life. Then truth about Warren Ellis and Neil Gaiman came out. I dread one day I'll find out BKV did something too.
363
JustineDelarge Mar 30, 2026 +188
Same. All three. And Good Omens. The fall of Neil Gaiman gutted me. Not in a “that’ll teach ya to form an unhealthy parasocial relationship with a writer” kind of way. In a “I found deep, real, healthy connection with this person’s art and having that ripped away caused profound pain, disappointment, and loss” kind of way.
188
HidaSocialClub Mar 30, 2026 +299
Its interesting the reread his work now too. It hasn’t aged well around gender. Back in the day it seemed great he wrote strong women characters. But now what stands out that the strong women only exist in the story to care for these needy useless men. It’s exhausting reading.

268
2Scarhand Mar 30, 2026 +158
She ended up my shit list after her tour years back, asking for donations from fans to make it happen like she wasn't sitting on personal millions, hiring local bands to open for her set at each location, then only paying said bands in exposure while keeping the money for herself because "don't they know who I am?" I thought Neil was too good for her. I was wrong.

He worked with Tori Amos and her r*** charity. This isn’t just he was vile against what he wrote. He positioned himself as a feminists. Worked with strong women during that time. Meanwhile being everything that was being worked against.
347
ThrowawayAdvice1800 Mar 30, 2026 +118
Tori Amos in particular felt extremely betrayed by this. They had been friends for years, but she severed all ties and wrote him out of any songs that mentioned him. I can’t imagine a worse surprise for someone so involved in DV/SA charities to learn an old friend is a rapist.

Dr Oz, he was my MIL’s cardiac surgeon at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in the mid 1980’s when that’s all he did. He seemed to be genuine, empathetic and skilled heart surgeon at the time. What u see him promulgating and endorsing now is a far cry from the man I met years ago, I am very disappointed

I recall Robert saying something like it was ironic because Oz could have saved potentially hundreds if not thousands more over his lifetime had he stayed just a cardiac surgeon - he was by all accounts very very skilled. Instead he harmed millions by pedaling snake oil.

It's deeply sucks. He really had hands, just a massive amount of pure talent and gift. He could have been an all-timer, up there with Dr. Michael DeBakey, or Dr. Christiaan Barnard. And would be talked about alongside Cooley and Nelson today. But no, he choose grift and evil. A huge waste.

For me it was watching that dakota johnson interview. Not the party-invitation saga so much.. It was how immediately after she was embarrassed about having actually been invited to the party she was petulant about. She retaliated by asking specific and detailed questions to to force dakota Johnson to talk about Chris Martin who she was dating at the time. They had been incredibly and deliberately private about their years-long relationship and it was so clearly the intention of Ellen's questions to make DJ uncomfortable by mentioning him specifically. A very childish "you embarrassed me, now im going to talk about your private life and make you uncomfortable" retaliation It was the confirmation of what id always suspected, that she enjoyed making people uncomfortable and it wasnt my imagination that she was doing it on purpose to 99% of the guests she had on

I'm 42. I remember the Coming Out episode of her sitcom, and honestly I can't overstate how important that episode was to a lot of queer kids. My parents loved the episode and that helped me feel like I could come out to them too (a few years later).  And then she was friends with the president who made it illegal for gay couples to get married. F****** traitor.

Joss Whedon. He was one of the reasons I got into writing and film making when I was younger. (Luckily Peter Jackson is the other and he's not done anything that I know of beside not wear shoes and drink copious amounts of tea) Finding out he was a abusive prick and cast would not let him be alone with Michelle Tractenberg whilst shooting Buffy and Angel, both shows I loved growing up has tainted them for me. And his treatment of Charisma Carpenter aswell. Then there is the stuff around Justice League
1695
dance4days Mar 29, 2026 +524
One thing that stands out to me now if I watch Whedon’s material is how openly rude all his characters are to each other. The dialogue is a stream of sarcastic and cynical put-downs, even between good guys who are supposedly friends. It’s often funny, but in a smug way that would be exhausting if the characters were real people that you actually had to spend time with. It really paints a picture of how he talks to people.

Thomas Edison. Always thought he was this cool inventor growing up. Nope. He was just a rich jerk who stole other people's inventions and profited off of them. He used a team to help him invent things, but took sole credit for them. He also actively tried to suppress other inventors to try and corner the market. The man was a giant d*****.

ERedfieldh Mar 30, 2026 +146
He would pay off people at the patent office to hold off on approved various patents so he could slam his own through and get it 'first.' Eventually, this evolved into him just putting patent clerks on his own payroll, who would then feed him any patent applications they thought he'd be interested in. He's file his own copy and get the patent 'first' again. He stole a whole lotta stuff from a lot of people who could have changed the world back then, if only they had, you know, the funds from their ideas coming in.

During my work years, because of my involvement in labor movements, I spent quite a bit of time with him over the years, he had a kind heart, a gentle vibe, he was soft spoken and he was a person who i held in high esteem, I was shocked to learn what he had done, it goes to show your that we really never see who’s lurking just under the surface of someone public persona

Rolf Harris was a national treasure at one point. I loved his TV show and wanted to be a cartoonist. My uni had a bar named after him with a picture he did when he came to open it. When a friend of mine who worked at the BBC first told me the rumours I didn’t believe her, a few years later of course we all knew. He wasn’t as bad as Savile but in a way that was worse because I always found Savile creepy.

I'm gonna date myself for saying this...but Steve Jobs. I was an absolute Apple fanboy growing up in the 90s; I even asked my dad to gift me shares in Apple as birthday presents (back when they were a much more reasonable $20-ish a share). I thought he was the tech equivalent of the second coming of Christ for how he returned to Apple to bring it back from the brink of extinction to the world's most valuable company. Only near the time of his death in the late 2000s did I find out about his bad side. Things like how he decided to forsake his own daughter, how he used to park in the handicap spaces at Apple buildings (plus how he always bought a new car every 6 months so that he could take advantage of a legal loophole where he didn't have to put license plates on his car), and how he went around espousing lies that eating lots of nuts and doing cleanses could cure people of cancer. (That latter one eventually did him in.) I know that "visionaries" are complicated people like the rest of us, but boy was he a special kind of a******.

And because so many people are high off their iPhones, and because he died not long after this stuff started to become known, he still seems to get a pass on a lot of this. I have to wonder what the public perception of him (and Apple) would be if he had lived. Would it be vaguely similar to how Musk is now viewed?

Woz is the best. Guy has access, wealth, and powerful connections in the most influential industry of the past 100 years, and the worst thing I can think to say about him is he can be a little "extra" with his sheets of currency schtick. That and being a ball hog with the Tetris high scores back in the day. I got worse things to say about myself than those complaints haha

Alice Munro. She was a brilliant short-story Canadian writer. Her collections often focused on life in small-town Ontario and her nuanced portrayals of women and girls and I admired her work so much that I accumulated a modest collection of her books. But it turns out her pos husband regularly SA’d her youngest daughter, and when she found out about it, she iced her daughter out and stayed with her pedo husband until he died in 2013. I’m going to get rid of all the books when I do my spring cleaning.

Elon had it in the bag man. He was literally like a modern day tony stark in peoples eyes. All he had to do was keep being chill and update the world on his works and everyone would’ve loved him. Then he threw it all away for money and power that he already had.

185
Arbiter_Electric Mar 30, 2026 +57
Yeah same. I remember The Oatmeal putting that comic out first talking about how awesome a Tesla is, then another one asking Elon directly to help save Tesla's old lab. Elon ended up donating a million dollars to the fund if I remember correctly. Got me super invested into Tesla and Elon. I was all in. I wanted a Tesla when I graduated highschool and it was my dream car at the time. Then he kept doing stupid shit. Over and over again. The first real big thing that I remember him doing was the whole Thailand cave incident where those boys got trapped. For some reason a lot of people begged musk to get involved because maybe he could help with his money or genius or whatever. Well. He did get involved. He got one of his companies, I think Space X, to design and start testing a f****** submarine to use in the rescue. It was meant as a one man capsule that a single child could occupy and be towed around by the divers. It was completely impractical and showed a lack of awareness about the whole situation. Then, for some reason, Elon decided to show up at the rescue operation to "help." The head of the rescue operation didn't allow him inside the cordon because he couldn't be of any use and so he just stood around like a dumbass. I'm pretty sure that same guy was the lead diver who also explained that the sub idea was unusable. Elon called him a pedophile.
57
FM1091 Mar 30, 2026 +78
I was okay with him, I guess everyone who wasn't a full-on fan of Elon was okay with him because they didn't bother to look deeper. Then, the 2018 Thai rescue fiasco happened, and it was all downhill from there.

I had a law professor who really believed in me and supported me when I was having a hard time. He helped me get a really good job. After our graduation ball he sent me an email saying he had a crush on me and it shattered everything. I thought he supported me for my brain not because he had sexual feelings for me. This still affects my professional confidence

Same, but a high school math teacher who I trusted and confided in. That relationship was a fond, warm memory in a high school experience with few fond, warm memories. Until he confessed his love (read: obsession) when I met him for coffee on a visit home my freshman year of college. After I was out of his sight, I started crying and couldn’t stop. I graduated high school at 16, so imagine how old I was when he started lusting after me. Regardless, it’s hurtful at any age to learn that a relationship you thought was safe, innocent, and based on friendship/admiration/people just being good, kind people is decidedly *not*.

The emeritus King of Spain, Juan Carlos I... It turned out he was a womanizer who cheated on his wife with as many women as he could (and the queen was perfectly happy with her infidelity), cheated on his taxes, and collected commissions from countries like Saudi Arabia. Now he lives in Abu Dhabi and will continue with his prostitutes, never returning to Spain to avoid paying taxes.

Bill Cosby. I grew up on the Cosby show, loved the idea of an upper middle class intelligent Black family...I was even sad when his son got killed that time, Ennis. And then the slipping of mickies came out and I cant even look at the show anymore. I love all the actors on the show but he really ruined a good time for me.

It has to be Bill Cosby. I absolutely loved him because he seemed to be such a great father . My husband and I saw him in Vegas and paid extra to sit right next to the stage. We were almost the only white people there. I happen to fit the exact look of the woman he used to r***. Most of them were white and blonde. As he was leaving the stage he came up to me! And shook my hand and said I have to go home now beautiful. I was so excited but also wondered why he came up and grabbed my hand instead of one of the beautiful black women that filled the room and were right next to the stage too. I believe to this day if my husband hadn’t been with me I might have been another one of his victims. It’s so sad 😞 because I loved his that he had been married such a long time too and always thought of them as the perfect family. Wow.What a drag.

The downfall of Bill Burr is wild to me. He ripped on hypocrites and scumbags for 30 years then jumped in bed with them and chucked it all away. The weirdest part is that he seems baffled as to why people turned on him. I don't understand how self awareness can completely evaporate overnight.

Marilyn Manson. As a young, budding Metalhead, Antichrist Superstar was a formative album for me, and I was in the apparent minority who liked The Golden Age of Grotesque. I also remember how intelligent and thoughtful he seemed during interviews, including his one for Bowling For Columbine. Then I found out what an abusive prick ol' Brian is behind the scenes, and I can no longer in good conscience listen to any of his music. I couldn't even say I was surprised when he did a song with Ronnie Radke, one of the most despicable sacks of shit to ever disgrace the Metal scene, up there with Tim Lambesis, Jon Schaeffer, David Draiman and a certain rampant paedophile who was forcefully removed from this mortal coil not too long ago.
