I honestly struggle to look past most of the Bluth family from Arrested Development Those characters are hilarious - and more importantly written so cleverly. Shit like nobody in the family knowing how to impersonate a chicken. Tobias always having the worst possible phrasing. Buster innocently foreshadowing things. The callbacks and payoffs, some of them several seasons long. This show is a comedic masterpiece and I don't think anything has ever come close.

Chataboutgames Apr 10, 2026 +8
Any one of those chicken impressions could have carried the joke. All of them happening at once is just beautiful comedic gluttony.
8
legless_chair Apr 10, 2026 +4
Have any of you ever actually seen a chicken??

no one knowing how to use a hammer is one of my favorite little bits you see
7
flamingdonkey Apr 10, 2026 +8
30 Rock is the only thing that comes close, imo. It doesn't have the same kind of foreshadowing, but it does have some crazy references to things that came out later, like Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein jokes.

Has anyone in that family even seen a chicken?

Rafi - the League
19
WithNoRegard Apr 10, 2026 +20
Rafi (and Jason Mantzoukas in general) is like truffle oil. If you use it right - sparingly - it can elevate a dish to an incredible level. But if you overdo it, it can completely ruin whatever it's in. If he has more than about a minute of screen time in a given episode he's kind of enbearable.

tcguy71 Apr 10, 2026 +13
Buddy, I don’t know who you are, but you’re about to chlamydia

He's used perfectly in B99 and The Good Place. Maximum Derek!

Jason Mantzoukas unhinged behavior in Taskmaster was beauty to behold.
10
d11dd11d Apr 10, 2026 +5
I've always loved the League but always considered it kind of a bad show (not sure why - maybe because some of the setups for the jokes were just completely absurd, even for a sitcom), but it always made me laugh. Rafi entered that show and was just unrelenting. What an outlandish and non-stop hilarious character.

Captain Raymond Holt Dee Reynolds Niles Crane

ChainsawSnuggling Apr 10, 2026 +19
Captain Holt is used *so well* and Andre Braugher has some of the funniest line deliveries I've ever seen.

Vin-di-CATION!
13
ChainsawSnuggling Apr 10, 2026 +10
That and "Velvet THUNDER" are the ones I was thinking of.
10
EchoesofIllyria Apr 10, 2026 +5
Weirdly, Velvet Thunder always felt to me like a line that was relying on Braugher hamming up the gravelly voice to make it work. My personal favourite is: “I said it. AND I MEANT IT!”
5
ChainsawSnuggling Apr 10, 2026 +7
Great episode, I really love the moments when Holt gets in on the goofiness. I thought series did a good job of having a balance of silly Holt and serious Holt so the silly moments still felt fun.
7
BakaMeansILoveYou Apr 10, 2026 +8
Ray becoming comfortable with the squad and letting his hair down is some of the best character development I've seen in a sitcom. From taking himself very seriously because of how much adversity he's faced in his life/ career, to becoming a part of a team that becomes family to him is absolutely beautiful.

It's still stunning to me that he could pivot from that to [Qimir](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DvMsU9WRHM) in The Acolyte. He's got so much more range than you might expect, and you can see how much his dance training goes into everything.

Tim Conway is absolute gold.

Tim Conway as pretty much anybody on the Carol Burnett show. The dentist, the elephant story, Mr. Tudball,...

I think they're the two funniest women working in Comedy Lisa from Temecula (SNL) - Ego Nwodim Judy Gemstone (Righteous Gemstones) - Edi Patterson
7

Judy absolutely deserved more recognition! She’s so special. Baby Billy is also up there for me

***British Representation:*** Peter Mannion MP - The Thick of It. Most comedies get a smile or a light chuckle out of me, the Thick of It is probably the only one that puts me in fits of laughter. Even on rewatch. But Roger Allam specifically is a Marvel, he's so god damn funny in everything he does, but with the writing of this show he's my kryptonite. Not a single line doesn't make me laugh, he's brilliant. Never seen an actor say F*** better. That's saying something for a show with so many great characters, I think the more popular answer would be Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), but I find Peter so much better. [This is a great 2 minute compilation](https://youtu.be/df6qsKoCiYo?si=dtRk6QZYTdUmseUO)
7
mmbg78 Apr 10, 2026 +1
That's a great show!
1

Great shout. I was going to say Malcolm Tucker!
1
ValleyFloydJam Apr 11, 2026 +1
Great pick, a pretty perfect series. And I agree the best is a Brit but it's Alan Partridge, just unbeatable, so many different elements of comedy and longevity, a masterful performance. Also chuck in Blackadder.

I'd have to say Kate McKinnon's alien abductee character from SNL. When she starts with the 'my cooter and my gravy shooter' lines i just lose it. Fran Fine is a close second tied with Kelly Bundy.
5

The alien skit when Ryan Gosling as host was hilarious.

Charlie - Always Sunny Mark - Peep Show Eric - That 70s Show Gob - Arrested Development (really hard to pick one from this show, Lucille HM) Niles - Frasier (honestly, Fraiser HM. He has so many legendary lines "I.... AM.... WOUNDED") Chandler - Friends (you can tell he had such an influence on the comedy of the show -- there's so many lines from other characters where you have to guess Matthew Perry wrote the joke) Ruxin - The League (Rafi HM) Barney - HIMYM (Marshall HM) Phil - Modern Family Erlich - Silicon Valley Schmidt - New Girl
8
SpaceForceAwakens Apr 10, 2026 +4
What does “HM” mean in this context?
4
d11dd11d Apr 10, 2026 +3
honorable mention
3
SpaceForceAwakens Apr 10, 2026 +3
Is that a thing people do? I’ve never seen it before.
3
d11dd11d Apr 10, 2026 -1
What do you mean? The phrase "honorable mention" or referencing a like "close second" (often called honorable mention) when making ranked lists?
-1
SpaceForceAwakens Apr 10, 2026 +2
“HM” with no context is confusing. I mean “do people often use ‘HM’ and do others know what it’s is supposed to mean?” I’ve Bennet seen it before.
2
d11dd11d Apr 10, 2026 -1
I've definitely seen it before. I think it's somewhat easy to infer given the context (the context being a "best of" list). Google "HM meaning in a list"
-1
flamingdonkey Apr 10, 2026 +1
This is a great list! Schmidt, Gob, and Charlie are all in my top 5 for sure.

Tim Conway from The Carol Burnett Show. You thought people crack up a lot on SNL? Conway broke the cast and guests so many times. He would see the cracks starting and just dig in. The [elephant story ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qqE_WmagjY)and [numbed up dentist](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IUSM4EKcRI) are ones of legend.

30 Rock is tough because all the characters, from lead Liz Lemon down to limited appearances Steve Buscemi (with his slender frame and big, wet eyes), are perfect. If I had to pick one, it's gotta be Dennis Duffy.

Jim Ignatowski from Taxi. He didn't have a lot of play with that cast, but every time he knocked it out of the park. The driving test, his origin story, the random things he'd add to a conversation, his "date" with Elaine where he played piano? I could go on and on. Christopher Lloyd and that character? TV genius.
