Why aren't True Romance and From Dusk, till Dawn considered Quentin Tarantino movies?

Posted by precita

These are not considered part of his movies even by himself when he talks about his 9 movies. True Romance was written by him (and the entire movie is exactly like his other movies in terms of writing, humor, violence, absurdity, etc), and well From Dusk till Dawn has him in it. Any reason they are not considered part of his work?

Because he didn't direct them.

That's pretty much the gist of it. His 9 film filmography are the films that he had creative control and display his full vision...Unlike the films he solely wrote.

Because they're not his films? I believe he's kind of disowned true romance. And from dusk Till Dawn is a Robert Rodriguez movie. He and Quentin are friends and he was in the movie, but that's where it ends.

He didn't disown True Romance... not in the least. in fact it's playing every Friday night this month at New Beverly Cinema the theater he owns in LA. [https://thenewbev.com/program/march-27-true-romance-midnight-show/](https://thenewbev.com/program/march-27-true-romance-midnight-show/)

Well he wrote From Dusk Til Dawn. So a bit more than just being friends or in the movie. But it's not his film like the others.

That's right, I did forget he wrote it. Did he co-write it with Rodriguez or was it all him?

He also wrote Natural Born Killers

And removed his name from it after Oliver Stone rewrote it

He wasn't happy with the way True Romance came out. He wrote the script but it was filtered through Tony Scott's vision, and the studio changed the ending. And he co-wrote FDTD, and it was directed by Robert Rodriguez, so why would it be considered "his"?

He shows True Romance at his theater all the time. It's playing Friday in fact. Friday nights at New Beverly they only show Tarantino movies. [https://thenewbev.com/program/march-27-true-romance-midnight-show/](https://thenewbev.com/program/march-27-true-romance-midnight-show/) It's not one of his directed movies. That's it. It's still a Tarantino movie.

Then he's changed his stance on it in recent years. And no, it's a Tony Scott movie that Tarantino wrote the screenplay for. Is Jurassic Park a David Koepp movie or a Spielberg movie? Is Rear Window a JM Hayes movie or a Hitchcock movie?

Because that would be really shitty to Tony Scott and Robert Rodriquez.

He only counts the ones where he gets to choose which feet to film

it's kinda wild how those two get overlooked, but i guess it boils down to his directorial credit. true romance is definitely classic tarantino in spirit, but bc he didn't direct it, it's not in his main lineup. same with dusk till dawn; he just acted in it. still, both are essential to the tarantino universe for sure.
