Why beloved 1998s Charmed went downhill

Posted by MissSugarkins

Charmed is the best in the first few seasons. Focused on the trials and tribulations of being three witch sisters in the modern world. Three sisters with diverse personalities. Mother (Piper) Maiden ( Phoebe) and Crone ( Prue ) The three of them were the perfect triad. They balanced each other and despite their differences, each had intense love for the other. When Prue “died”, that all changed and the show became a joke. Whether they fired Shannen or she quit; it’s no secret there were tensions between her and Alyssa. Alyssa wanted more screen time and wanted the show to go in a different direction. She also wanted the creators to get rid of Shannen… so it was a “her or me” kind of thing. Regardless she got what she wanted and “Prue was killed” There goes the original sisterhood. The reason people dislike Phoebe and her character, is because the actress literally is the reason why the show kept going downhill. Why the women kept having to show more skin, as she urged producers for more nudity ( if you’ve seen any of Milanos other works, you’d know she’s very comfortable with her body and showing it ) despite how her other cast mates felt. Ironically she was just as selfish and attention seeking as her character. Personally, I don’t watch past the death of Prue. No hate to McGowan tho. The magic just isn’t there for me. Just wanted to jot my thoughts down here because this post is against the charmed groups rules.

I feel like the whole show is pretty below average. That being said I do think that s4 and maybe 5 are on par with the first 3

i still like the show a few seasons after personally. but yeah it sucked about the issues behind the scenes because i liked prue (rip doherty). i miss this kind of show though. just love me some witches, werewolves, demons and stuff.

The vibe of the show for the first 3 just hit hard. I dont know what it is. "90s TV vibes"? It shifted to brighter and cheery from 5 onwards i feel.

Things are just worse without Shannen Doherty. Look at me, my life has been considerably worse since July 13th 2024...why? Severe lack of Doherty in the world.

I loved her. Her personality was so strong on and off the show. I think her a Alyssa both had very dominant energies lol which rolled out on screen when they bickered as sisters. Which was kinda neat to see.

Seasons 1, 3 feel like a supernatural Gilmore Girls with demons, after Prue, it leans Maxim spread with fireballs. If you haven’t, the S2, 3 rewatch is still gold.

I really need to watch supernatural. My best friend is OBSESSED with that show. But yea the first three seasons are soooo cozy.

Show went eight seasons and 179 episodes. Sounds like it was more of a dumb feud over egos. Not the first time Shannen has been in a feud with a co-star.

I’ve heard this too. I think they both had diva tendencies.

The charmed recipe was one of economics in my opinion. The monster of the week formulae from hercules combined wjth the c**** ability to cycle in different generic bad guys with limited make-up a la star trek. It made a show that was very quick and formulaic to write and c**** to make. Then you realise that the reason the house is such a massive part of the plot is because it enables them to buy one property and film almost the entire show on one location, with minimal off-site shoots, almost no set building needed etc. Supernatural wishes it had this recipe
