Why did the first half of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen feel so different from the second?

I really liked this show overall, especially the first few episodes, but I don't understand why the Cunninghams were initially made out to be this creepy, cult-like family. I kept waiting for them to be revealed as supernatural creatures or something, and Rachel walking into a trap. But it turns out Rachel was the one who was cursed, and the family was just...normal in the end? Albeit very flawed. I get that in the beginning, before she knew about the curse, Rachel was very hesitant to get married, and her discomfort with the family probably has a lot to do with her own fears. But I still felt like there were a ton of loose threads with them that were left unanswered, and I'm so confused. Thoughts?
